Today's Deals

Barnes & Noble has finally enabled gifting of ebooks and nook apps on their website (they had this sort of working a couple of weeks ago, but you had to know the ISBN and go to a store and have the store clerk send the ebook gift ... way too complicated and prone to error, not to mention requiring driving to a store, which isn't always that easy for everyone). On all non-pre-order ebooks, there is now a small line with a gift box icon that reads Buy As Gift. In addition to pre-orders, you can't gift a free ebook (both restrictions are the same as at Amazon).

I tested this out on a low-cost (99 cent) book (in case I was stuck paying for it) and you are prompted to enter details for the recipient, but I didn't see any way to specify WHEN you want the ebook delivered, so if you want a Christmas surprise, you'll need to stay up late on Christmas Eve. You'll want to be very sure the recipient has a nookColor or nookTablet if you gift a nook App, but being able to send someone an app puts B&N one step ahead of Amazon (who should be able to add this fairly easily, since they already allow gifting of music and Kindle books). For convenience, though, sending a delayed delivery gift of an ebook via Amazon is definitely the way to go.

I just checked today's 10 cent Android apps and none of them have been marked down yet at Amazon (last night, all of the ones on both platforms were marked down, so I wonder if it is only in reaction to being reported by large numbers that they drop at Amazon)? Anyway, there are several interesting games, including DEER HUNTER 3D ($4.99 Amazon) on today's list, including a Swype replacement, a PDF reader, a toddler zoo game and several games for all ages in today's lineup (of eleven, not just 10). I'll report a few of them myself and check the list again later tonight to see if any dropped at Amazon, as I prefer to get them there, so they'll work on the Kindle Fire in addition to my phone and tablet.

Update: The apps have started dropping in price! DEER HUNTER 3D is now 10 cents (it wasn't 10 minutes ago), so you should be able to start comparing the list to the ones at Amazon (I have to run out the door in 5 minutes, so won't be able to create a list to click here until later tonight).

Update: These are the apps that are now 10 cents at Amazon:

The Grail Conspiracy ($0.99), the first title in the Cotten Stone series by Lynn Sholes and Joe Moore, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
Winner of Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award for Best Mystery

On assignment in the Middle East, television journalist Cotten Stone stumbles upon an archeological dig that uncovers the world's most-sought-after religious relic: the Holy Grail. With his last dying breath, Dr. Gabriel Archer gives it to Cotten, uttering "You are the only one" in a language she's heard from only one other person--her deceased twin sister.

What begins as a hot news story for the ambitious young reporter soon turns into a nightmare when the Holy Grail is stolen and strange "accidents" befall her dearest friends. Running for her life, she turns to John Tyler, a priest with firsthand knowledge of religious artifacts, for help. An anonymous source leads them to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, where an abominable experiment is underway that--unless destroyed--promises to unleash an ancient evil upon the Earth.

Ancestor Stones ($1.55 / £0.99 UK), by Aminatta Forna, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (no US edition).
Book Description
Abie follows the arc of a letter from London back to Africa to a coffee plantation that now could be hers if she wants it. Standing among the ruined groves she strains to hear the sound of the past, but the layers of years are too many. Thus begins the gathering of her family's history through the tales of her aunts - four women born to four different wives of a wealthy plantation owner, her grandfather. Asana, Mariama, Hawa and Serah: theirs is the story of a nation, a family and four women's attempts to alter the course of her own destiny.

A Charlie Brown Christmas ($4.99 B&N), by Charles M. Schulz, is the Nook Daily Find; there doesn't seem to be an edition on Kindle and this is a "NOOK Kids Read and Play" edition at B&N, which means it only works NOOK Color and NOOK Tablet.
Book Description
When Charlie Brown sets out to find a Christmas tree to use for the holiday play, he takes a step toward discovering the true meaning of Christmas. His scraggly tree-with some assistance from Linus and his blue blanket-thrives with a little love and makes the message of the season shine through!

This NOOK Kids Read and Play book features narration, animation and interactivity. Kids can choose to hear the story read aloud and play activities on select pages of the book. Animations replay with a simple tap. Plus, kids can tap to enlarge text and pinch & stretch to zoom in on pictures.

But all that changes as increasingly disturbing events begin to occur: soot stains on the carpet, glimpses of strange black animals, and cryptic messages written on her bathroom mirror. Baffled and afraid, Katharine begins to doubt her own sanity.

At the same time, two charismatic men enter her life: Allistair, her new assistant at work, and Zachary, a well-heeled neighbor who just moved into her building. Katharine soon finds each of them inextricably entangled in her affairs. As her life becomes stranger and her dreams more terrifying, she realizes neither man is what he seems and that she's caught in something far beyond her own comprehension. For the first time, she must reach beyond her own boundaries. There Katharine forges her first true friendship with Margot, a librarian who helps her discover what these men really are, why she's drawn to them, and what they want with her.

The answer places Katharine in the middle of a fierce battle that forces her to decide between the two men fighting for her soul.

In the end, only one can be saved, but all three will be judged.

10 cent Android Apps & Free Book Updates

I forgot to check these until later today and I couldn't post until now, but if you get this tonight, you might want to check these apps at Amazon, as they are 10 cents tonight:
Of course, there are several more in the Android Market at 10 cents that are not in the Amazon store, at all, with 12 total 10 cent apps available today. There is a drawing program for kids (tablet edition, not for phones) and a couple of games that look interesting.

Also, there are a couple of additional formats on free books from later this afternoon:
There has been a lot of activity in the Kindle store the last few days -- Indie authors are now allowed to join the Kindle Lending Library and, if they do, have their books free for up to 5 days in each 90 day period (if they do join the KLL, then the book has to be exclusive to Amazon during the 90 day period, so some authors are not jumping in). As a result, the number of books in the Lending Library is now at near 50,000, but much of that appears to be self-published (with "list" prices ranging from 99 cents to over $300!). You can check out the non-public domain free ebook list or browse the list of all Prime Eligible Lending Library books, but I found a that adding some limits on price helped me to find more traditionally published titles in the Lending Library. If you bought your Kindle Fire on release date, you have two more days to borrow this month's book, before you'll need to decide if you are going to renew Prime.

Today's Deals

For those still doing their holiday shopping, it looks like today is a Video Game Day on the Amazon GoldBox and Lightning Deals page.

Additional formats on free books; Sony is a bit late joining in this month, so most of the EPUB formatted additions are from there, this time around.:

On Gold Mountain ($1.99), a re-published backlist title by Lisa See, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
Lisa See spent summers in the cool, dark recesses of her family's antiques store in Los Angeles' Chinatown. There, her grandmother and great-aunt told her intriguing, colorful stories about their family's past- stories of missionaries, concubines, tong wars, glamorous nightclubs, and the determined struggle to triumph over racist laws and discrimination. They spoke of how Lisa's great-great-grandfather emigrated from his Chinese village to the United States to work on the building of the transcontinental railroad as an herbalist; how his son followed him, married a Caucasian woman, and despite great odds, went on to become one of the most prominent Chinese on "Gold Mountain" (the Chinese name for the United States). The result is a vivid, sweeping family portrait in the tradition of Alex Haley's Roots that is at once particular and universal, telling the story not only of one family, but of the Chinese people in America itself, a country that both welcomes and reviles immigrants like no other culture in the world.

The Chicago Way ($1.55 / £0.99 UK), by Michael Harvey (co-creator and executive producer of the television show Cold Case Files), is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $7.99, but you can get the 2-Book Bundle: The Chicago Way, The Fifth Floor at the same price, which is a good deal - cheaper than those in the UK can get both titles, even with this sale.).
Book Description
Private detective Michael Kelly is hired by his former partner to solve an eight-year old rape and battery case long gone cold. But when the partner turns up dead, Kelly enlists a team of his savviest colleagues to connect the dots between the recent murder and the cold case it revived: a television reporter whose relationship with Kelly is not strictly professional; his best friend from childhood, a forensic DNA expert; and an old ally from the DA's office. To close the case, Kelly will have to face the mob, a serial killer, his own double-crossing friends, and the mean streets of the city he loves.

Serial Killers and Mass Murderers ($3.25 Kindle, B&N), by Nigel Cawthorne, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle.
Book Description
Serial Killers & Mass Murderers takes you into the minds of the criminals who committed the world's most notorious and horrifying crimes. Each of the sadistic murderers profiled here was once known simply as someone's neighbor, co-worker or child. What turned them into killers? In one chilling chapter after another, this book profiles a terrifying succession of homicidal maniacs and asks the question, "What makes them tick?"

Free Audiobook - This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage

This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage, by Ann Patchett, is free for everyone as a holiday gift from Audible. This is an exclusive essay from them and will likely disappear (or go up in price) after the holiday season.
Book Description
“Tell the story of your marriage,” my young friend Niki says to me. “Write down how it is you have a happy marriage” But the story of my marriage, which is the great joy and astonishment of my life, is too much like a fairy tale, the German kind, unsweetened by Disney.

This December, we are excited to present our members with a gift that is truly unique: an original essay, available exclusively here at Audible, written and voiced by best-selling author – and fellow listener – Ann Patchett. This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage is a very real love story, and one that is much more about the journey than the destination. Chock full of beauty, truth, and humor, and, in trademark Ann Patchett style, possessing an uncanny ability to feel both surprising and familiar at the same time, this essay is a perfect, if unconventional, holiday listen. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Happy holidays and happy listening!

Mudbound ($0.99), by Hillary Jordan, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
In Jordan's prize-winning debut, prejudice takes many forms, both subtle and brutal. It is 1946, and city-bred Laura McAllan is trying to raise her children on her husband's Mississippi Delta farm—a place she finds foreign and frightening. In the midst of the family's struggles, two young men return from the war to work the land. Jamie McAllan, Laura's brother-in-law, is everything her husband is not—charming, handsome, and haunted by his memories of combat. Ronsel Jackson, eldest son of the black sharecroppers who live on the McAllan farm, has come home with the shine of a war hero. But no matter his bravery in defense of his country, he is still considered less than a man in the Jim Crow South. It is the unlikely friendship of these brothers-in-arms that drives this powerful novel to its inexorable conclusion.

The men and women of each family relate their versions of events and we are drawn into their lives as they become players in a tragedy on the grandest scale. As Kingsolver says of Hillary Jordan, "Her characters walked straight out of 1940s Mississippi and into the part of my brain where sympathy and anger and love reside, leaving my heart racing. They are with me still."

The Final Curtsey ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Margaret Rhodes, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $9.99).
Book Description
This is the intimate and revealing autobiography of Margaret Rhodes, the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and the niece of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Margaret was born into the Scottish aristocracy, into a now almost vanished world of privilege. Royalty often came to stay and her house was run in the style of Downton Abbey. In the Second World War years she ‘lodged’ at Buckingham Palace while she worked for MI5. She was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin, Princess Elizabeth to Prince Philip. Three years later the King and Queen attended her own wedding; Princess Margaret was a bridesmaid. In 1990 she was appointed as a Lady-in-Waiting to the Queen Mother, acting also as her companion, which she describes in touching detail. In the early months of 2002, she spent as much time as possible with her ailing aunt, and was at her bedside when she died at Easter that year. The next morning she went to Queen Elizabeth’s bedroom to pray, and in farewell dropped her a final curtsey. This is an enthralling account of a special life, and a unique insight into the intimate moments of the British Royal family. The Queen Mother regarded Margaret Rhodes as her “third daughter”, and she has been extremely close to her cousins the Queen and Princess Margaret throughout their lives. The book is full of charming anecdotes, fascinating characters, and personal photographs and is an unparalleled insight into the private life of the British monarchy.

The Eleventh Victim (Hailey Dean Series #1) ($2.99 Kindle, Kobo; $3.80 B&N), by Nancy Grace, is the Nook Daily Find, but cheaper on Kindle and from Kobo.
Book Description
"Seconds passed; minutes. She could hear movement now in the waiting room she had just left...it was the metal magazine rack she was sure, that crashed to the tile floor. Then quiet. She strained to hear in the darkness. Nothing more, and then... The air moved in the room and she knew. He was here."

As a young psychology student, Hailey Dean's world explodes when Will, her fiancé, is murdered just weeks before their wedding. Reeling, she fights back the only way she knows how: In court, prosecuting violent crime...putting away the bad guys one rapist, doper, and killer at a time. But dedicating her life to justice takes a toll after years of courtroom battles and the endless tide of victims calling out from crime scene photos and autopsy tables. Just as she grows truly weary, a serial killer unlike any other she's encountered begins to stalk the city of Atlanta, targeting young prostitutes, each horrific murder bearing his own unique mark. This courtroom battle will be her last.

Hailey heads for Manhattan to pick up the pieces of the life she had before Will's murder, training as a therapist. In a vibrant new world, she finally leaves her ghosts behind. But then her own clients are brutally murdered one by one by a copycat using the same M.O. as the Atlanta killer she hunted down years before. As the body count rises across Manhattan, Hailey is forced to match wits not only against a killer, but the famed NYPD.

Unless she returns to her former life and solves the case, still more innocent people will die at the hands of a killer who plans to get her, before she can get him!

The Christmas Dog (Main/UK), by Melody Carlson, is free for UK customers in the Kindle store, courtesy of Christian publisher Revell, and should be free for US customers by morning. This is the one I was hoping we'd get last week, when her The Christmas Bus repeated.
Book Description
Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations?

Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet.

But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

Free Book (Kindle/nook) - The Addicted Brain

Update: 12/12/11 As expected, now free in the US Kindle store and from Barnes & Noble.

The Addicted Brain: Why We Abuse Drugs, Alcohol, and Nicotine (Main/UK), by Michael Kuhar, is free for UK customers in the Kindle store and should be free for US customers by morning.
Book Description
Addiction destroys lives. In The Addicted Brain, a leading neuroscientist explains how and why this happens–and presents advances in treatment and prevention. Using breathtaking brain imagery and other research, Michael Kuhar, Ph.D., shows the powerful, long-term brain changes that drugs can cause, revealing why it can be so difficult for addicts to escape their grip.

In plain English, Kuhar describes why some people are far more susceptible to addiction than others. He illuminates striking neural similarities between drugs and other pleasures potentially capable of causing abuse or addiction–including alcohol, gambling, sex, caffeine, and even Internet overuse. Finally, he outlines the 12 characteristics most often associated with successful treatment.

Authoritative and easy to understand, The Addicted Brain offers today’s most up-to-date scientific explanation of addiction–and what addicts, their families, and society can do about it.

Get an MP3 holiday album for $3.00 (KSO)

This offer is supposed to be for all models of Kindle with Special Offers, but so far it is only showing up on my Kindle Touch. The other offer that is showing on all my KSO's is the Free Audiobook of Beyond Religion that I told you about last week (and which everyone can get, even without a KSO).

Get any one of 100 holiday albums on MP3 for $3.00

To take advantage of this offer:
  1. First, turn on your Kindle with Special Offers, click Menu, then View Special Offers.
  2. Find the offer: Get any one of 100 holiday albums on MP3 for $3.00. Click on it, then on the link to Email Me This Offer.
  3. You will get an email from Amazon with your promotional code, right away.
  4. Once you have the promotion code (and have selected your album; see below), click this link, then on the button labeled Enter Your Code, at any time up to the expiration date of December 31.
  5. Enter your code and follow the directions.
  6. Choose any of these albums and you'll pay only $3.
You'll have a promotion code on your account that will apply to the FIRST album you buy (from the list) after that. Note that even if the album is free, you'll pay three dollars, so be careful which one you pick after you enter the code -- make sure you don't grabbing a low cost title by accident, which can happen if you apply the code right away, before you are ready to buy the album. Current prices range from $3.99 to $5.00. You should save the code and not enter it until you are ready to buy an album.

To recap: you must claim the offer by December 14 and must do so from your Kindle with Special Offers. You'll get a promotion code via email and you have until December 31 to enter and redeem the code. Once you enter it, it will work on the next album from the list that you purchase.

Unlike the Get an MP3 Classical Sampler for $2 offer that was only up for one day, you get a few days to sign up for this one. I'm hoping it will show up on more than just my Kindle Touch, so that others in the family can take advantage of the offer (they each have an account with their own KSO on it, since Amazon started limiting the offers to one per account). There is also a much larger selection available on this offer, with all but one of them currently at $5 and one at $3.99 (so I might pick up more than one without this offer code).

The Basement ($0.99), by Stephen Leather, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. I have a review copy of this relatively short novel, and it looks like AmazonEncore has issued this edition, which should mean more of this UK author's backlist titles should be available in the US, eventually. His Kindle titles in the US have been mostly self-published, but if you check the UK store, you'll find that most were published by Hodder (in print) and many translated into several languages. In addition to his (currently) free short story Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish, I see a couple of other deals: Hard Landing: The First Spider Shepherd Thriller is £0.49 in the UK, while in the US, The Bestseller ($0.99) and Once Bitten ($2.99) are marked at bargain prices.
Book Description
New York is a city full of strangers. For NYPD detectives Turner and Marcinko, none are harder to figure out than the serial killer on the loose torturing and killing young women. In fact, right now, somewhere in the city, a woman is being held captive in a basement and it is up to the detectives to find her and the killer—before it’s too late.

As pressure mounts on Turner and Marcinko, their prime suspect is screenwriter wannabe Marvin Waller. He is becoming increasingly frustrated by his lack of success and the cops think he might be channeling his anger into murder—but he doesn’t seem to be at all concerned that they are hot on his trail. As Turner and Marcinko close in on Waller they have to wonder: is he the killer? And if he isn’t — who is?

Fusing shifting viewpoints with a growing sense of dread and almost unbearable suspense, the UK’s thriller master Stephen Leather arrives on the shores of the United States with The Basement, his most terrifying work to date.

The Dogs of Rome ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Conor Fitzgerald, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $6.92). This one was free back in May, so some of you should already have it!
Book Description
Rome. A city where rules are compromised. And compromise rules.

It's one of the hottest days of the year. Chief Inspector Blume is enjoying a rare solitary lunch in a tranquil corner of Trastevere when an unwelcome phone call intrudes with news of a brutal killing a few streets away.

Arturo Clemente is no ordinary victim. His widow is an elected member of the Senate, and Blume arrives at the scene to find enquiries well underway, the case itself apparently clear-cut, a prime suspect quickly identified. Blume must fight to regain control of the investigation, but well acquainted with the city's underworld, he knows from bitter experience that in Rome even a murder enquiry must bow to the rules of politics.

But when worrying shortcuts sanctioned by one of his superiors are uncovered, it seems events are being manipulated from on high. The complex and uncomfortable truth Blume will unravel will shock even him, and his struggle for justice may yet cost more innocent lives…

Free Book (Kindle/EPUB) - Money, Possessions, and Eternity

Update: 12/13/11 Now free from Sony. Still full price at B&N, so nook readers should grab the vanilla EPUB and side-load it.

Money, Possessions, and Eternity, by Randy Alcorn, is free on Kindle, courtesy of Christian publisher Tyndale House. So far, it's full price at Barnes & Noble, but it should drop there in a day or so (athough sometimes B&N chooses not to participate in these freebies).
Book Description
What does the Bible really say about money? This completely revised and updated version of the classic best-seller provides a Christian perspective about money and material possessions based on the author's painstaking study of the Bible. Randy Alcorn uses the Scriptures to approach this often touchy subject head-on. Thought-provoking arguments challenge readers to rethink their attitudes and use their God-given resources in ways that will have an eternal impact. Alcorn deals straightforwardly with issues of materialism, stewardship, prosperity theology, debt, and more. An excellent choice for group study as well as individual financial guidance. Includes a study guide, indexes, and appendixes with additional resources.

Christmas is Murder ($1.99), the first Rex Graves Mystery title by C.S. Challinor, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
Christmas in the English countryside -- what could be more charming? Not even a blizzard can keep Rex Graves away from Swanmere Manor, a historic hotel in East Sussex. But instead of Christmas cheer, the red-haired Scottish barrister finds a dead guest. Was it a stroke that killed old Mr. Lawry? Or an almond tart laced with poison?

When more guests die, all hopes for a jolly holiday are dashed. Worst of all, the remote mansion is buried under beastly snow. No one can leave. Confined with a killer, no one can enjoy their tea without suspicion and scrutiny. Rex takes it upon himself to solve the mystery, but the most intriguing evidence -- a burnt biography of President George W. Bush -- offers few clues. Could the killer be the sherry-swilling handyman? The gay antiques dealer with a biting wit? The quarreling newlyweds? Surely, it's not Helen D'arcy, the lovely lass Rex seems to be falling for . . .

The search—and the stranger—will prove to be more sinister than they first appeared, ultimately sending Tamsin on a treasure hunt through time that will unlock the secret of her true identity, unearth the sins of her family, and unleash a power so vengeful that it could destroy them all.
