You’ve probably watched video on YouTube or other user-generated video sites such as HowCast, Flickr, or DailyMotion. But did you know you can make money using these platforms? It’s not easy, but if you follow the path I’ll outline, you’ll find that user-generated video is a real, viable way to grow revenues and build your business.

Refurbished Kindle2 3G ($90) or Nook 3G/WiFi ($85)

You can get a refurbished 2nd generation Kindle with 3G or 1st generation nook with 3G & WiFi at bargain basement prices today. These are both one-day deals, being offered on competing daily deal sites.

The deal on the Kindle is from WOOT, which is now an Amazon company, and it comes with a full one-year warranty from Amazon. Definitely worth considering if you are looking for a second Kindle in the family (or even your first reader; we have one of these in daily user here and there is little functional difference between it and the latest generation Kindle other than it doesn't support WiFi hotspots). By the time the warranty is ready to expire, there will no doubt be color Kindles or Kindle tablets out to consider for an upgrade. Like all Kindles, this one supports audiobooks (and there is a deal coming up on those; stay tuned for tomorrow's today's post on how to get 8 audiobooks for $6), although you load them by USB instead of via WiFi.

Over on Daily Steals, you can get an original nook with 3G and WiFi for $85. This ads WiFi (in case you don't live where AT&T works) and the ability to get the occasional goodie from the a B&N cafe, as well as to read books for free while inside a B&N. You can use MP3 audiobooks on the nook, but there is no support for Audible (which is no another Amazon company and highly integrated with the Kindle, especially the Kindle 3). The warranty on these is from B&N, but I know that the stories of warranty service on their forums seldom matches up to those at Amazon (no drop-ship replacement in advance of you sending in a broken unit, for example).

Which to get? Either would make a nice addition to a family that wants to add a second reader to access their library or a second reader for the person that wants to be able to read the freebies available in the "other" store. The nook can read DRM'd EPUB and PDF, in addition to books from the B&N store (a special flavor of DRM'd EPUB, PDF and their own eReader format) and can read books from most libraries. The Kindle is adding library support later this year and support Audible. Either way you go, it would be a winning choice.

Click HERE for the deal on the Kindle 2. This is worth visiting, just to read the ad text (woot is hilarious).

Click HERE for the deal on the nook. Click on Read More to read the full ad text. Although funny, I wonder some will think you can get Harry Potter as an ebook, after reading it?

Update:This just in: you can get brand new a nook WiFi only from B&N's ebay store (here), for only $99. Looks like the new nook that will be announced tomorrow is obsoleting all the current eInk versions, so it should be eInk, as well.

Free Book (Kindle/nook) - Germs, Genes, & Civilization

Germs, Genes, & Civilization: How Epidemics Shaped Who We Are Today, by David P. Clark, is free once again in the Kindle store and from Barnes and Noble. If you haven't picked this one up, it's a good read (at least, on micro-biology major told me so).

Book Description
The Stunning Hidden Interconnections Between Microbes and Humanity.

AD 452: Attila the Hun stands ready to sack Rome. No one can stop him--but he walks away. A miracle? No...dysentery. Microbes saved the Roman Empire. Nearly a millennium later, the microbes of the Black Death ended the Middle Ages, making possible the Renaissance, western democracy, and the scientific revolution. Soon after, microbes ravaged the Americas, paving the way for their European conquest.

Again and again, microbes have shaped our health, our genetics, our history, our culture, our politics, even our religion and ethics. This book reveals much that scientists and cultural historians have learned about the pervasive interconnections between infectious microbes and humans. It also considers what our ongoing fundamental relationship with infectious microbes might mean for the future of the human species.

Free Book (Kindle/EPUB/nook) - Who Is My Neighbor?

Who Is My Neighbor?: Being a Good Samaritan in a Connected World, by Steve Moore, is free in the Kindle store and from ChristianBook, courtesy of Christian publisher Navpress.

Book Description
In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus challenges us to think and act differently. The challenge remains the same today, but now the context is global, and the calls for help overwhelming. Author Steve Moore helps equip you to use your passions in fulfilling the Great Commission in an interconnected culture. Take the MyPassionProfile.com assessment for free with the purchase of this book to explore your issue-based passions and learn how to go to the next level of passionate engagement. Read inspirational stories from around the globe, and receive strong, biblical advice from a seasoned missions and leadership trainer.

From the Back Cover
And it’s getting smaller. In this global village, information about the needs of people over there is only a hyperlink away from over here. Life in this connected world has greatly complicated the answer to a once-simple question: Who is my neighbor?

Steve Moore believes that search engines like Google not only symbolize and supercharge globalization but actually point the way forward as we try to make sense of our response to the needs of others. What if you could PageRank the God-ordained passions that connect you with opportunities for meaningful service? This liberating lifestyle would be free from the guilt of inaction and the messiah complex of overcommitment. It is not limited to missionaries or aid workers or spiritual first responders. It is for ordinary people like me and you.

Welcome to College: A Christ-Follower's Guide for the Journey, by Jonathan Morrow, is free in the Kindle store.

Book Description
In this engaging guide, Jonathan Morrow encourages students to consider and engage the issues they will face in the dorm, on campus, and in the college classroom. A great gift idea for all high school graduates!

“What will you do with your life?” One huge, frightening question! In college, whether you know it or not, you answer this question every day with each decision. That’s why it’s important to know how you will handle college before you find yourself in the thick of it. College is a great time, with new friends and new experiences, but it is also a time that will shape your future.

How do you grow spiritually? How do you share your faith in a hostile environment? How do you manage your time so that you can study and have fun? Is all truth relative? Are there good reasons to be a Christian? What about alcohol? How should you think about dating and sex as a Christian?

Jonathan Morrow tackles these questions and other tough issues that arise during the college years. Grounded in his own experience as well as biblical truth, Morrow writes quick, easy to read chapters packed with good advice. Each chapter is summarized into “big ideas” and includes a handy list of related resources.

Free Book (Kindle) - The Ice Princess (UK)

The Ice Princess, by Camilla Läckberg, is free for UK customers and only in the UK Kindle store. The US edition is $7.99, but you can actually get a much better deal by grabbing the The Ice Princess and The Preacher ($7.59), which gives you the first two Patrik Hedstrom Crime novels in a single package (effectively making the first book free for those in the US). As near as I can tell, it's also the only way (currently) to get The Preacher on Kindle; for the US, I only see a $17.13 hardcover and a $26.37 audiobook edition (with a US release date of less than a month ago) available for the stand-alone title.

Book Description
For the first time in English, the psychological thriller debut of No.1 bestselling Swedish crime sensation Camilla Lackberg.

Returning to her hometown after the funeral of her parents, writer Erica Falck finds a community on the brink of tragedy. The death of her childhood friend, Alex, is just the beginning. Her wrists slashed, her body frozen in an ice cold bath, it seems that she has taken her own life.Erica conceives a memoir about the beautiful but remote Alex, one that will answer questions about their lost friendship. While her interest grows to an obsession, local detective Patrik Hedstrom is following his own suspicions about the case. But it is only when they start working together that the truth begins to emerge about the small town with a deeply disturbing past.

Free Book (Kindle) - Their Last Suppers

Their Last Suppers: Legends of History and Their Final Meals, by Andrew Caldwell, is free courtesy of publisher Andrews McMeel Publishing. This publisher has a number of cookbooks and non-fiction titles in the Kindle store and this one looks to contain a few a history lessons, as well as being a cookbook. Just don't expect it to be a scholarly historical reference, though, as there are no references provided for the last meals discussed. Think of it more as a historical cookbook, with meals taken from many specific eras and regions.

Book Description
Did you know that Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian and his longtime private chef was Jewish? What dish played an integral role in Marilyn Monroe's unsuccessful bid to woo back Bobby Kennedy? Part historical narrative and part grilling guide and cookbook, Andrew Caldwell's Their Last Suppers: Legends of History and Their Final Meals guides history buffs and gourmands alike through gastronomically inspired biographical accounts of more than 20 legendary personalities.

Unearthing recipes as far back as 323 B.C., Caldwell, the History Chef, provides insight into 2,000 years of culinary lore. Each historical figure's profile includes a brief description of pursuits and accomplishments as well as little-known anecdotes, popular foods of his or her time period, recipes for the figure's actual last meal, and cooking tips. Because the kitchens of Montezuma, Caesar, and other notables profiled within the book were often very basic, Caldwell brings their fare into modern kitchens, although he strongly believes that, whenever possible, grills and open fires should be used for most dishes and therefore provides specific preparation tips throughout.

From the Titanic's 12-course tasting menu to personal recipes for Princess Diana's Favorite Watercress Soup, Elvis Presley's Fried Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich, Julius Caesar's Ambrosia, Cleopatra's Hummus, and Stone Crab a la Kennedy, historians and foodies alike will relish the trivia and tastings paired within Their Last Suppers: Legends of History and Their Final Meals.

New Kindle Game - Snakes and Ladders

Snakes and Ladders ($0.99), by Olmatech Technology, is a new game in the Kindle store. Looks like simple fun and can also be used as a math teaching tool for kids.

Book Description
Snakes and Ladders brings the classic board game to Kindle.

The rules of the game are simple. Roll a die and advance your marker on the 100-square board. Landing on a ladder allows you to climb more quickly, but try not to land on the snakes which cause you to slide right back down! The winner is the first player to reach the 100th square. You can play against Kindle, or with up to four people in Pass 'n' Play mode.

Three different game modes are supported: "Play," "Play & Count," and "Play & Learn Math." "Play" mode is the easiest to play as the marker advances automatically when the die is rolled. In "Play & Count" mode, each player rolls the die and then moves the marker by the number shown on the die. And in "Play & Learn Math" mode, each player must add the number from the die to the marker's current numerical position on the board and then select the correct sum from a list of numbers shown in order to advance.

Snakes and Ladders is an entertaining and educational game for the whole family!

Free Book Update (Kindle/EPUB) - 2:46: Aftershocks

Previously free from Sony, 2:46: Aftershocks: Stories from the Japan Earthquake ($9.99 Kindle), by The Quakebook Community, has dropped from $9.99 at Amazon and is now free there, as well.

Book Description
In just over a week, a group of unpaid professional and citizen journalists who met on Twitter created a book to raise money for Japanese Red Cross earthquake and tsunami relief efforts. In addition to essays, artwork and photographs submitted by people around the world, including people who endured the disaster and journalists who covered it, 2:46: Aftershocks: Stories from the Japan Earthquake contains a piece by Yoko Ono, and work created specifically for the book by authors William Gibson, Barry Eisler and Jake Adelstein.

“The primary goal,” says the book's editor, a British resident of Japan, “is to record the moment, and in doing so raise money for the Japanese Red Cross Society to help the thousands of homeless, hungry and cold survivors of the earthquake and tsunami. The biggest frustration for many of us was being unable to help these victims. I don’t have any medical skills, and I’m not a helicopter pilot, but I can edit. A few tweets pulled together nearly everything – all the participants, all the expertise – and in just over a week we had created a book including stories from an 80-year-old grandfather in Sendai, a couple in Canada waiting to hear if their relatives were okay, and a Japanese family who left their home, telling their young son they might never be able to return."

ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the price you pay (net of VAT, sales and other taxes) goes to the Japanese Red Cross Society to aid the victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. If you'd like to donate more, please visit the Japanese Red Cross Society website, where you can donate either via Paypal or bank transfer (watch out for the fees, though!) or the American Red Cross Society, which accepts donations directed to its Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund (but only accepts donations made with U.S.-issued credit cards).

And of course, if you like the book, please tell your friends, and tell them to give generously as well! Thank you! Japan really does appreciate your help!

Free Book (nook) - Heart of the Witch

Heart of the Witch ($2.27), by Alicia Dean, is this week's Free Friday book at Barnes and Noble. Although it isn't free at Amazon, is is currently discounted from it's $6.99 list price. If you want a paperback copy as well (perhaps to give to a friend), you can get one of those for only 2 cents more (and it's eligible for the 4-for-3 sale at Amazon).

Book Description
A beautiful young witch must choose between maintaining the anonymity of her coven and trusting the detective who would bring a heartless serial killer to justice.

Ex-homicide detective Nick Lassiter has seen a lot in his day, but the world-weary PI has never had a case like this. A merciless serial killer is on the loose, but his latest victim narrowly escaped with her life. Lassiter can tell from the start that Ravyn isn’t your typical crime victim—she has a steely resolve that is both frightening and intriguing in equal measure. As the two allies team up to pursue the killer, their relationship goes beyond the professional as the desperate circumstances lead to a very personal bond. And as Lassiter learns more about Ravyn, he begins to suspect that she may not be exactly who she seems.

Free Book (Kindle) - Diary of the Displaced (UK)

Diary of the Displaced ($0.99), by Glynn James, is free for UK customers in the Kindle store (UK link). Looks like it is one of the self-published books that Amazon has dropped in price and so far has all five-star reviews.

Book Description
There is a place where nightmares come true.

It is a dark and terrifying place that is hidden from the world we know, by borders that only the most unfortunate of souls will ever cross.

James Halldon woke up in the dark, alone, without any food or water, and without a clue where he was.

And it only got stranger.

"Of all the places I had to end up, it had to be here."

The Journal of James Halldon is a Horror Fantasy novel, giving a detailed account of his struggle to survive, whilst trying to understand the strange, dark, terrifying world in which he is trapped.

If it's dark when you wake up, and you can hear growling, then close your eyes and maybe it will go away.

But maybe it won't.

Free Book (Kindle) - Operation Eichmann (UK)

Operation Eichmann: The Truth about the Pursuit, Capture and Trial ($13.77), by Zvi Aharoni and Wilhelm Dietl, is free for UK customers in the Kindle store. This is another Wiley book, so I don't expect it to be free for US customers. (UK link)

Book Description
On May 24, 1960, David Ben-Gurion, prime minister and founder of Israel, stood before the Knesset and made a startling announcement: "I have to inform the Knesset that, some time ago, Israeli security forces found one of the greatest Nazi criminals, Adolf Eichmann, who, together with other Nazi leaders, is responsible for what they termed the Endl?sung [Final Solution] of the Jewish question, in other words, the extermination of six million European Jews. Adolf Eichmann is already in this country under arrest and will shortly be brought to trial."

Operation Eichmann, as the pursuit, capture, and trial of the notorious Nazi official was known, stunned the world. Its success was due largely to the unceasing efforts of one man, Zvi Aharoni, an experienced Mossad operative who was a skilled investigator and interrogator. He tracked Eichmann to Argentina, secured photographs that established his identity, and was a key player in the plot to kidnap the exiled war criminal and bring him to trial. Above all, as the sole person to interrogate "the architect of the Final Solution" after his capture, and the man who convinced Eichmann to admit his identity and face trial in Israel, Zvi Aharoni is the only one who knows firsthand what Eichmann actually said—a controversial subject often misrepresented in previous accounts.

Now, for the first time in Aharoni's own words, comes the extraordinary true story behind one of history's most famous manhunts. Daring, dramatic, filled with episodes of breathtaking suspense and intrigue, Operation Eichmann is also a powerful chronicle of conscience and of the never-ending search for justice.

All the intricate planning and preparation, the relentless pursuit of evidence, the constant need to justify time and expense are related with exacting detail. As events unfold, various political, personal, and philosophical issues come into play, focusing not only on a top secret mission, but on the priorities of individuals—as well as nations—during the Cold War era. The startling complicity of those who gave refuge to and provided safe passage for fleeing Nazi leaders reveals an expansive network of global proportions, while the seeming indifference of others is equally chilling. Adding to the tension is the emotional toll imposed on the participants, for whom the operation became a constant exploration of the theme of justice vs. revenge.

A probing, deeply personal account of a real-life undertaking to rival the most breathless cloak-and-dagger fiction, Operation Eichmann is a powerful, compelling reading experience.

Free Book (EPUB) - Only You

Update: Also free from Borders.
Only You, by Deborah Grace Staley, is free in the Kobo ebookstore. This book has previously been free for Kindle (Oct '10).

Book Description

A charming romance about the lives and loves of people in a small Tennessee town. In the tradition of Debbie Macomber.

"Hey, ya'll. Dixie Ferguson here. I run Ferguson's Diner in Angel Ridge, Tennessee. Population three hundred forty-five. It's a picturesque town in the valley of the Little Tennessee River, established in 1785. In the early days, its first families--the McKays, the Wallaces, the Houstons, the Joneses, and, of course, the Craigs--staked their claims on hundreds of acres of the richest bottom land anyone had ever seen. After all the years I've spent behind the counter at Ferguson's, I could probably tell ya'll a story about near everyone in town. But we only have so much time, so I'll narrow it down to just two for now. This is a story about coming home. It's also a story about acceptin' folks for who they are. You could say it's a story about Josie Allen, a librarian, and Cole Craig, a handyman, but I say it's a story about finding love where you'd least expect to."

Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control: A Computer Aided Learning Approach ($112.00 US), by Colin D. Lewis, is free for UK customers in the Kindle store (UK link)

Book Description
A practical, hands-on reference to the latest tools and techniques of demand forecasting

Presenting an up-to-date overview of demand forecasting, this comprehensive primer is an ideal resource for those who need in-depth information and hands-on training. Covering the latest developments in field techniques—and featuring software that includes helpful short-term forecasting models and inventory control scenarios—Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control includes complete details on:

  • Forecasting in stationary demand situations
  • Medium-term forecasting for growth and seasonality
  • Implementing the re-order level (ROL) policy
  • Using the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) to establish replenishment quantity values
  • Interpreting service levels based on simple statistical concepts
  • Establishing the value of the review period and maximum stock level
  • Selecting the most appropriate inventory control policy
  • OPSCON—a computer-friendly learning package
forecasting is a crucial method for managing inventory control. It is an essential skill for all operations and manufacturing professionals, as well as those professionals in distribution and logistics. This practical reference offers an up-to-date and thoroughly accessible overview of this key concept, covering both theory and practice from current demand forecasting methods. The author, a seasoned expert in the field, provides complete details on the links between forecasts produced by analyzing demand data and the various methods by which this information—in conjunction with cost material on stocked items—is used to establish workable parameters for the most commonly used inventory control systems.

In Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control, Colin D. Lewis takes an in-depth look at the family of short-term forecasting models that are based on the exponentially weighted average and its many variants. With sample data that includes calculations necessary for hands-on applications, Lewis takes you step by step through a variety of essential processes, among them how to forecast in stationary demand situations, plus how to relate forecast and demand data to specific time periods. You'll also learn how to assess the validity and accuracy of selected forecasting models. In addition, Lewis examines a group of medium-term forecasting models based on a time-series, curve-fitting approach. The group encompasses, among other key topics, regression analysis, straight-line trend forecasts, and seasonality.

Additional sections on inventory control investigate the re-order level policy and re-order cycle policy, illustrating how they can be operated at minimum cost while offering a high level of customer service. Special consideration is given to the hybrid (s/S) inventory control policy and to the situation characterized by such items as slow moving spares—where the demand for a single unit can be expressed by an average interval between issues as long as 20 years.

To aid your understanding of the techniques and methods described, Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control contains a user-friendly computer learning package called OPSCON (Operations Planning and Control). Aimed at practitioners, as well as students who want to understand the processes behind the software they use, OPSCON features a number of short-term forecasting models and inventory control scenarios that enable you to establish solid policy parameters using either your own data or demonstration data.

Packed with helpful examples, easy-to-read graphs, and sample calculations, Demand Forecasting and Inventory Control is an indispensable primer for everyone who needs to get a firm grasp on the principles, fundamentals, and applications of this increasingly vital concept.

Free Kindle Game - Amazon AdMash

Amazon AdMash, a new free app in the Kindle store, lets you vote on the screensavers that those who have purchased a Kindle with Special Offers (KSO) will see. Currently, everyone can "play", including those who have any Active Content capable Kindle (K2.5 and up), not just those who have purchased a KSO. It's a neat concept: let the customers tell you which ads they like best, so that your advertising is more effective. But (here's where the game part is), it can also be used as a force to annoy those with the KSO (the most popular ads win, but the votes aren't restricted to those who will see the ads and prefer those; those who don't like the KSO concept can vote as well, even intentionally picking ads that are less desirable). Of course, to play the game, you have to view the ads (in stereo, yet), but without the ability to take advantage of the deals presented (which means more advertising distribution for the KSO sponsors).

Book Description
Step into the driver's seat and tell us which sponsored screensavers you'd like to see on Kindle with Special Offers. Anyone can vote; it's fun and easy.

Here's how it works. AdMash will show you two different screensavers and then ask you to vote for the one you like best. Scrutinize them or go with your gut, it's up to you. Once you've made your choice, it's on to the next round. The ones that get the most votes can become Kindle Sponsored Screensavers. It's up to you and the rest of the community to pick your favorites.

Download AdMash and start voting now. Play as often as you like and we'll keep adding new screensavers for you to vote on.
