Nook Daily Find 7/7

Carried Away ($6.59 Kindle, $1.99 B&N), a standalone novel by Jill Barnett [Bell Bridge Books], is the Nook Daily Find. No price match yet on Kindle for this book, but I do see a discount on Wild ($1.99), the second in her Medieval Trilogy.

Carried Away
MacLachlan brothers Calum and Eachann need brides, but there are no women on their secluded island home. As the descendants of a displaced Highland clan, their lives are complicated, and their goals and methods for dealing with problems far from the same. Calum is the logical brother, solid and steady, while Eachann lives by his impulses. When widower Eachann’s two rebellious children are thrown out of their mainland boarding school, he decides it’s time for a wife. Fate all but hands him two women on a silver platter. So he kidnaps two brides, one to help him with his uncontrollable children, and one for his all-too-serious brother.

Debutantes Georgina Bayard and Amy Emerson are socially opposite, old money versus new, and both are the talk of the gossipy Four Hundred. While attending the same ball, they are swept away by a mad Scotsman. As captives on an isolated island, these two social enemies find themselves with only each other for support. Then, before the women can successfully escape, winter sets in and there is no way back to the mainland. They are stuck with the MacLachlans--two brothers and two completely unruly children. There, on that misty island, during a cold and blustery winter, Amy and Georgina must choose: to find some way to go back to their old lives, or take a chance and let their hearts get carried away….
Wild
A legendary warrior. A mission to tame the rebellion of the Welsh Borderlands. A wild Welsh beauty. For years Teleri of the Woods, shunned by superstitious villagers, has lived her life in solitude among the creatures of the forest. But when she discovers a man ambushed and left for dead in her woods, she must try to save him with her healing skills. She does not know he is a knight charged by the King of England to establish a stronghold and build a castle nearby, only that he is the same knight who chased her once before. Sir Roger FitzAlan awakes to discover that none of his fabled diplomacy and skills of war will help him with his most immediate problem--a madwoman who has tied him to stakes in a small woodland cottage. Teleri is his match in wit and will, but she opens his eyes to the wonder of a simple world he has never known. As Roger recovers and fomulates his plan for catching his would-be-murderer, he realizes something else: his real challenge won’t be taming the borderlands but taming and winning over his wild Welsh healer. But when he understands that he cannot live in her world and she may not survive in his, he knows he must teach her to trust him, even though he threatens all she holds dear.

Today's Kindle Daily Deal is Quicksilver ($1.99), the first Baroque Cycle novel by Neal Stephenson [HarperCollins], with the companion audiobook for $3.49. This is an excellent selection (one I picked up long ago, when Fictionwise was still around) and will appeal both to his fans and any fan of historical fiction, as he tells the story of the birth of the scientific revolution.
Book Description
Quicksilver is the story of Daniel Waterhouse, fearless thinker and conflicted Puritan, pursuing knowledge in the company of the greatest minds of Baroque-era Europe, in a chaotic world where reason wars with the bloody ambitions of the mighty, and where catastrophe, natural or otherwise, can alter the political landscape overnight.

It is a chronicle of the breathtaking exploits of "Half-Cocked Jack" Shaftoe -- London street urchin turned swashbuckling adventurer and legendary King of the Vagabonds -- risking life and limb for fortune and love while slowly maddening from the pox.

And it is the tale of Eliza, rescued by Jack from a Turkish harem to become spy, confidante, and pawn of royals in order to reinvent Europe through the newborn power of finance.

A gloriously rich, entertaining, and endlessly inventive novel that brings a remarkable age and its momentous events to vivid life, Quicksilver is an extraordinary achievement from one of the most original and important literary talents of our time.

And it's just the beginning ...

Today's Kindle Romance Daily Deal is The Replacement Wife ($1.99), by Eileen Goudge [Open Road].
Book Description
From New York Times bestselling author Eileen Goudge comes a poignant new novel that asks the question, “What would you do if you were told you had only six months to live?” For one professional matchmaker the answer is heart-wrenching: She must find her husband’s next wife.

Camille Hart, one of Manhattan’s most sought-after matchmakers, has survived more than her fair share of hardships. Her mother died when she was a young girl, leaving her and her sister with an absentee father. Now in her forties, she has already survived cancer once, though the battle revealed just how ill-equipped her husband Edward is to be a single parent. So when doctors tell Camille that her cancer is back—and this time it’s terminal—she decides to put her matchmaking expertise to the test for one final job. Seeking stability for her children and happiness for her husband, Camille sets out to find the perfect woman to replace her when she’s gone.

But what happens when a dying wish becomes a case of “be careful what you wish for”? For Edward and Camille, the stunning conclusion arrives with one last twist of fate that no one saw coming.

At once deeply felt and witty, The Replacement Wife is an unforgettable story of love and family, and a refreshing look at the unexpected paths that lead us to our own happy endings.

Today's Kindle SciFi/Fantasy Daily Deal is Fade to Black ($1.99), the first novel in the Rojan Dizon series by Francis Knight [Orbit/Hachette]. The second in the series, Before the Fall, was just released last week, with Last to Rise scheduled for release in November.
Book Description
From the depths of a valley rises the city of Mahala

It's a city built upwards, not across - where streets are built upon streets, buildings upon buildings. A city that the Ministry rules from the sunlit summit, and where the forsaken lurk in the darkness of Under.

Rojan Dizon doesn't mind staying in the shadows, because he's got things to hide. Things like being a pain-mage, with the forbidden power to draw magic from pain. But he can't hide for ever.

Because when Rojan stumbles upon the secrets lurking in the depths of the Pit, the fate of Mahala will depend on him using his magic. And unlucky for Rojan - this is going to hurt.

Today's Kindle Kids Daily Deal is The Dragleon ($1.99), by Guy Waddilove [Peach Publishing].
Book Description
A magical creature is born, curled up inside a flower. With no parents around to name or teach her, she must work out what she is, all by herself. She soon learns that she can blend in perfectly with any plants around her.

When she huffs and puffs only the sweet scent of flowers wafts over her victims, sending them to sleep or making them think happy thoughts. Grasses spring up in her wake, or flowers, if she’s feeling really happy, while thorns tend to shoot up beside her if something makes her cross.

She soon grows very large indeed, so all the other animals fear her and her strange powers and flee at the very sight of her. But she is all alone in the world, with only mute little chameleons for company, for they think nothing of her changing colour and can’t run away from anything much.

An absolutely charming and magical story that brings sheer delight to the reader who can’t but conjure up beautiful flowers and fruits as Dragleon happily weaves her magic. Yet beneath the colour and wonder are the age-old prejudices of colour, race and disability and how the friendship between a young girl and a strange creature develops because they have focused on their similarities rather than their differences and finally overcome the adversities of life.

This book is suitable for children between the ages of 6–10.

A Medieval Family: The Pastons of Fifteenth-Century England and Cathedral, Forge, and Waterwheel: Technology and Invention in the Middle Ages by Frances Gies and Joseph Gies

A Medieval Family: The Pastons of Fifteenth-Century England
The Pastons family of Norfolk, England, has long been known to medieval scholars for its large collection of personal correspondence, which has survived five centuries. Revealing a wealth of information about manners, morals, lifestyle, and attitudes of the late Middle Ages, the letters also tell the story of three generations of the fifteenth-century Paston family that treads like a historical novel full of memorable characters: Margaret Paston, the indomitable wife and mother who fought the family's battles; her husband, John Paston I, tough, hardheaded, and thrice confined to Fleet Prison but never yielding to his enemies; daughter Margery, who scandalized family and friends by falling in love with the Paston bailiff, Richard Calle; lighthearted, chivalric Sir John; and cheerful, sensible John III, who against all odds succeeded in marrying for love.

A Medieval Family traces the Pastons history from 1420, through the stormy Wars of the Roses, to the early 1500s. The family's story, extracted from their letters and papers and told largely in their own words, shows a side of history rarely revealed: the lives and fortunes not of kings and queens but of ordinary middle-class people with problems, tragedies, and moments of happiness.
Cathedral, Forge, and Waterwheel: Technology and Invention in the Middle Ages
How did Western Europe, engulfed in political chaos after the fall of Rome, rise by the time of Columbus to world leadership in technology? This book tells how the "silent contribution of many hands and minds" wrought a technological revolution that was marked by such key inventions as the horse collar, the vertical waterwheel, the spinning wheel, the flying buttress, the blast furnace and the art of printing. By tracing these and other devlopments and the way they affected everyday life, the authors show how certain innovations created the Western civilization that spread around the world. Frances and Joseph Gies are the authors of "Life in a Medieval Village", "Life in a Medieval Castle" and "Women in the Middle Ages".

UK Kindle Daily Deal 5/21

They Were Counted (£0.99 UK), the first novel in the Transylvanian Trilogy by Miklos Banffy, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $7.19).
Book Description
Painting an unrivalled portrait of the vanished world of pre-1914 Hungary, this story is told through the eyes of two young Transylvanian cousins, Count Balint Abády and Count László Gyeroffy. Shooting parties in great country houses, turbulent scenes in parliament, and the luxury of life in Budapest provide the backdrop for this gripping, prescient novel, forming a chilling indictment of upper-class frivolity and political folly, in which good manners cloak indifference and brutality. Abády becomes aware of the plight of a group of Romanian mountain peasants and champions their cause, while Gyeroffy dissipates his resources at the gaming tables, mirroring the decline of the Austro-Hungarian Empire itself. The first book in a trilogy published before World War II, it was rediscovered after the fall of Communism in Hungary and this edition contains a new foreword.

They Were Found Wanting (£0.99 UK), the second novel in the Transylvanian Trilogy by Miklos Banffy, is the second Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $7.19).
Book Description
The tale of the two Transylvanian cousins, their loves, and their very different fortunes continues in this second volume of the Transylvanian trilogy. Balint Abady is forced to part from the beautiful and unhappily married Adrienne Uzdy, while Lazlo Gyeroffy is rapidly heading for self-destruction through excessive drinking and his own fecklessness. Politicians, quarreling among themselves and stubbornly ignoring their countrymen's real needs, are still pursuing their vendetta with the Habsburg rule of Hungary from Vienna. Meanwhile, they fail to notice how the Great Powers-through such events as Austria's annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1908-are moving ever closer to the conflagration of 1914-1918 that will destroy their world forever. Contrasting a life of privilege and corruption with the lives and problems of an expatriate Romanian peasant minority whom Balint tries to help, this portrait is an unrivalled evocation of a rich and fascinating aristocratic world oblivious of its impending demise.

They Were Divided (£0.99 UK), the concluding volume in the Transylvanian Trilogy by Miklos Banffy, is the third Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $7.19).
Book Description
The final part of Banffy's trilogy reflects the rapidly disintegrating course of events in Central Europe. In the foreground the lives of Balint, with his ultimately unhappy love for Adrienne, and his fatally flawed cousin, Laszlo Gyeroffy, who dies in poverty and neglect, are told with humour and a bitter-sweet nostalgia for a paradise lost through folly. The sinister and fast moving events in Montenegro, the Balkan wars, the apparent encirclement of Germany and Austria-Hungary by Britain, France and Russia, and finally the assassination of Franz Ferdinand all lead inexorably to the youth of Hungary marching off to their death and the dismemberment of their country.

Nook Daily Find 5/15

The Madman's Daughter ($10.67 $1.99 Kindle, B&N), by Megan Shepherd [HarperCollins], is the Nook Daily Find. The price is bouncing at bit at B&N right now, though, so you might want to check back a bit later this morning and see if the price drop is sticking (I'm seeing $11.99 most of the time I refresh the page). Update: Now price matched on Kindle.
Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.

COULD A MAIDEN'S KISS TURN A CYNICAL ROGUE INTO AN HONORABLE KNIGHT?

Mercenary knight Sir Garren owed much to William, Earl of Readington: his sword, his horse, even his very knighthood. And in return Garren had saved the earl's life in the Holy Land. Yet when his liege lord fell gravely ill upon their return home, Garren knew he must save his friend once more, whatever the cost—even if it meant embarking upon a pilgrimage to pray to a long-forsaken God, or promising to deflower an innocent young woman along the way….

Dominica was certain Sir Garren was a sign from heaven. Surely the pilgrimage, blessed with the presence of the handsome and heroic knight, would provide a sign of heaven's plan for her to take the veil. But every step of the journey seemed to be leading her straight into Garren's powerful arms. And Dominica was beginning to wonder if her true mission was to open the mercenary's seemingly cold heart to true and lasting love.

Nook Daily Find 5/6

The Oracle Glass ($10.09 Kindle, $10.94 B&N), by Judith Merkle Riley [Sourcebooks Landmark], is the Nook Daily Find. It looks like B&N is late dropping the price again, as it appears to be full price and is higher than on Kindle, where the companion audiobook is $3.99. I suspect this will drop to the $1.99 to $2.99 range sometime this morning.
Book Description

You'll believe her, because you know she's more than 150 years old and a witch, and she has all of Paris in the palm of her hand.
