Give It Up!: My Year of Learning to Live Better with Less ($1.99), by Mary Carlomagno

Grab the discounted Justice with Bonus Material ($1.99), by Faye Kellerman, before it disappears and you have to pay full price ($8.99) once again. This is the eighth title in the popular (and long-running) Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus series, but is as good a spot to start as any, if you aren't one that needs to read a series entirely in order.
Book Description
For a limited time, discover one of Faye Kellerman first Decker/Lazarus novels at a special price, including an exclusive excerpt from her new thriller, Gun Games, available January 2012.

The cruel and bizarre slaying of a beautiful teen leads Detective Decker into the dark heart of an exotic subculture: the seamy, sometimes violent world of Southern California’s rootless, affluent youth. But even the confession of a disturbed kid with cold “killer eyes” cannot soothe Decker’s inner torment. For he knows in his gut this crime goes much deeper and higher than anyone expects—and that true justice, brutal and complete, has yet to be done.

Princess of the Midnight Ball ($2.99) is the first title in the titular series by Jessica Day George.
Book Description
A tale of twelve princesses doomed to dance until dawn…

Galen is a young soldier returning from war; Rose is one of twelve princesses condemned to dance each night for the King Under Stone. Together Galen and Rose will search for a way to break the curse that forces the princesses to dance at the midnight balls. All they need is one invisibility cloak, a black wool chain knit with enchanted silver needles, and that most critical ingredient of all—true love—to conquer their foes in the dark halls below. But malevolent forces are working against them above ground as well, and as cruel as the King Under Stone has seemed, his wrath is mere irritation compared to the evil that awaits Galen and Rose in the brighter world above.

Captivating from start to finish, Jessica Day George’s take on the Grimms’ tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses demonstrates yet again her mastery at spinning something entirely fresh out of a story you thought you knew.

You can pick up both titles in Mark Teppo's Codex of Souls series (published by Nightshade Books) for only 99 cents each: Lightbreaker and Heartland.
Lightbreaker

But what he discovers upon arriving is dark magick - of a most ancient and destructive kind! An encounter with a desperate spirit, leaping destructively from host to host, sets Markham on the trail of secretive cabal of magicians seeking to punch a hole through heaven, extinguishing forever the divine spark. Armed with the Chorus, a phantasmal chain of human souls he wields as a weapon of will, Markham must engage in a magickal battle with earth-shattering stakes! Markum must delve deep into his past, calling on every aspect of his occult training for there to be any hope of a future. But delve he must, for Markham is a veneficus, a spirit thief, the Lightbreaker...

Heartland
Seek the Light! Embrace the Heartland! Markham returns to Paris where he lost his love - and nearly his life! The ancient order of manipulative magicians that once cast him out is now in turmoil... a turmoil made all the greater by the swaths of destruction that Markham tried to avert in the Pacific Northwest. Teamed with an unlikely partner, Markham seeks to overturn the corrupt remains of an order no longer able to police its own practitioners. Yet, he can't escape the feeling that he's still just a pawn in a larger game. The second novel of the Codex of Souls further explores the strange occult world first introduced in Lightbreaker. Mark Teppo's vision of a magical underworld is a non-stop adventure that continues to bring new light to the occult origins of our history.

Book Description
On the day Davan Shanahan was assigned as doctor to the military pleasure ship, she was having a bad hair day, which was actually an understatement. Her hair looked as though she'd placed her hand on an antique generator. Every dark auburn hair on her head was standing on end.

When Cair Ghrian met Davan, he was coming off one major drunkfest. Known far and wide as The Black Sun, the scythelord of Amhantar was a prince of the royal house, an infamous Deathwielder and a force to be reckoned with…especially when riled. Hating his assignment as the captain of what everyone in the universe called a flying cathouse, Cair's first words to Davan were, "By the Goddess, couldn't you even be bothered to comb that frizzy mess before reporting to me, woman?"

Right from the start, Davan and Cair pushed each other's buttons. She loathed his arrogance and dominating personality. He looked upon her as a nuisance and happily joined the rest of the crew in playing tricks on the new doctor. Thrown together, they would rub each other the wrong way until the rubbing got hot, steamy and incredibly intense.

Free Book - Commentary on Mark (K/N)

Commentary on Mark, by Robert H. Gundry, is free in the Kindle store and from Barnes & Noble, courtesy of Christian publisher Baker.
Book Description
Verse-by-verse explanations with a literal translation.

Shouldn't a Bible commentary clarify what God's Word actually says? Going beyond questions of authorship, date, sources, and historicity, respected linguist and teacher Gundry offers a one-volume exposition of the New Testament that focuses on what is most useful for preaching, teaching, and individual study--what the biblical text really means. Providing interpretive observations in a "breezy" style that's easy to read and adaptable for oral use in pulpit or classroom presentations, Gundry directs his book to an evangelical audience. His crisp translation of the New Testament inserts various phrasings of passages in brackets, allowing for smooth transition from original text to alternative and contemporary readings.

SAMPLE TEXT OF TRANSLATION
JOHN'S PREDICTING A MORE POWERFUL BAPTIZER THAN HE (Mark 1:1-8) 1:1-3: The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, God's Son, according as it's written in Isaiah the prophet, "Behold, I'm sending my messenger before your face [= ahead of you], who'll pave your way [= the road you'll travel], [the messenger who is] the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.'"

Pastors, Sunday school teachers, small-group leaders, and laypeople will welcome Gundry's non-technical explanations and clarifications. And Bible students at all levels will appreciate his sparkling interpretations of the NT Scriptures. A trustworthy guide for anybody wanting to delve deeper into God's Word.

SAMPLE TEXT OF COMMENTS

"Gospel" means "good news." Jews would associate this good news with Isaiah 52:7. Non-Jews would think of the good news of an emperor's accession to power, birthday, visit to a city, military victory, or bringing of prosperity to the empire. But Mark's good news has to do with the salvation and victory brought by Jesus over evil in all its demonic and physical forms. "The gospel of Jesus Christ" therefore means "the gospel about Jesus Christ" and refers to a proclaimed message ("the voice of one crying out"), not a book (though because books like Mark's contain that proclaimed message, the term came to refer to those books in the capitalized form of "Gospels" to distinguish them from the message, kept uncapitalized as "gospel").

When Lois pulls into Green on New Year’s Day, she expects a charming little town full of smiling people. She quickly realizes her mistake. Why is the senator smuggling counterfeit Western coins to the Eastern Empire, and contraband Chinese products back to Ravenna? Thecla's coded message leads to a secret tunnel and the sinister temple of Cybele, whose devotees are self-mutilated eunuchs. Caught up in the maelstrom following the death of an obscure rabbi in the Roman backwater of first-century Palestine, Leah finds herself also engulfed in her own turmoil--facing the prospect of an arranged marriage to a Roman soldier, Alban, who seems to care for nothing but his own ambitions. Head of the garrison near Galilee, he has been assigned by Palestine's governor to ferret out the truth behind rumors of a political execution gone awry. Leah's mistress, the governor's wife, secretly commissions Leah also to discover what really has become of this man whose death--and missing body--is causing such furor.

This epic drama is threaded with the tale of an unlikely romance and framed with dangers and betrayals from unexpected sources. At its core, The Centurion's Wife unfolds the testing of loyalties--between two young people whose inner searchings they cannot express, between their irreconcilable heritages, and ultimately between their humanity and the Divine they yearn to encounter.

Nonna’s story is one of suffering, torture, and death—but also of incredible acts of kindness that show the ultimate triumph of faith and love over despair and evil. The Secret Holocaust Diaries is in part a tragedy, yet it’s also an unforgettable true story about forgiveness, courage, and hope.

Today's Deals

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a safe holiday. You'll notice that I've moved the Backlist/Indie freebie section to this daily roundup post, just as a list of titles. I'm going to try keeping them there for a while, since they otherwise seem to be trying to take over the blog.

There are several new 30% off coupons for Kobo (see sidebar at right), good until January 12.

If you run into your local Starbucks, you may still be able to grab a card with the code to get the paid version Scrabble for free in the Appstore (runs on iThings only, of course); from what I can tell, it's the iPhone version, but it runs on the iPad and iPod Touch.

In the Amazon store, the 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less selection has changed, which means there are a lot of new bargains (some of which will, no doubt, disappear in a day or two, as generally seems to happen each month with this promotion).

Additional formats on these free books are now available:

The Thomas & Mercer edition of Already Gone ($0.99), by John Rector, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
Jake Reese is a writing teacher at an American university. He lives in a small brick Tudor close to campus with his art buyer wife, Diane. His life is quiet-Ordinary even. And he likes it that way. But it wasn't always quiet. Jake's distant past was a life on the streets, inflicting damage and suffering on more people than he can count. And now someone from his past, it seems, has come looking for him.

A raw, gripping thriller about the price paid for past sins, John Rector's third novel is a live wire that crackles with the intensity of a man who has nothing left to lose. When two men attack Jake in a parking lot and cut off his ring finger, he tries to dismiss it as an unlucky case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But when events take a more sinister turn and Diane goes missing, Jake knows he can no longer hide from the truth.

As he embarks on a mission to find his wife, he realizes his dark past is refusing to stay buried, and that his future is about to unfold in ways he could never have imagined.

With taut and brooding prose, Rector paints a formidable portrait of a reformed man's slow descent into a life he thought he had walked away from forever. As the intensity becomes almost unbearable, the pace quickens and the suspense applies an unrelenting, vice-like grip, as ALREADY GONE hurtles toward its ultimate, explosive climax.

The Little Friend ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Donna Tartt, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $11.99).
Book Description
The hugely anticipated new novel by the author of The Secret History—a best-seller nationwide and around the world, and one of the most astonishing debuts in recent times—The Little Friend is even more transfixing and resonant.

In a small Mississippi town, Harriet Cleve Dusfresnes grows up in the shadow of her brother, who—when she was only a baby—was found hanging dead from a black-tupelo tree in their yard. His killer was never identified, nor has his family, in the years since, recovered from the tragedy.

For Harriet, who has grown up largely unsupervised, in a world of her own imagination, her brother is a link to a glorious past she has only heard stories about or glimpsed in photograph albums. Fiercely determined, precocious far beyond her twelve years, and steeped in the adventurous literature of Stevenson, Kipling, and Conan Doyle, she resolves, one summer, to solve the murder and exact her revenge. Harriet's sole ally in this quest, her friend Hely, is devoted to her, but what they soon encounter has nothing to do with child's play: it is dark, adult, and all too menacing.

A revelation of familial longing and sorrow, The Little Friend explores crime and punishment, as well as the hidden complications and consequences that hinder the pursuit of truth and justice. A novel of breathtaking ambition and power, it is rich in moral paradox, insights into human frailty, and storytelling brilliance.

Storm Born ($3.49 Kindle; $1.99 B&N), the first title in the Dark Swan series by Richelle Mead, is the Nook Daily Find. This is a series I started on paper, then repurchased as ebooks. You can get the first three in the series (including this one), but getting the Richelle Mead Dark Swan Bundle ($9.83 Kindle, B&N) and the fourth title was released earlier this week: Shadow Heir ($5.24 Kindle, B&N).
