Free and Bargain Book Roundup

Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking ($0.99) kicks off the Rachel Morgan/Hollows Series, one of my favorites. Check your Kindle library if you've been following for a while, as there was a bonus edition free in early 2010. It looks like the tenth in the series, A Perfect Blood, has just released and there is what looks to be a short story anthology, Into the Woods: Tales from the Hollows and Beyond, coming in October.
Book Description
All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party ... and to feed.

Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining -- and it’s Rachel Morgan'sjob to keep that world civilized.

A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead ... or undead.

HarperCollins has several of Suzanne Macpherson's books marked down to 99 cents apiece:
In the Mood
Dexter is a prominent cancer researcher who divides his time between his enormous penthouse in the city and his family's hundred year-old orchard estate on the ritziest island in the Sound.

They've got nothing in common except Bunny Barnes Winchester, society's most hilarious grande dame and Alison's oldest best friend.

Well, there is one other thing they have in common: an anonymous tryst about 10 years ago. A tryst so wonderful, so mysterious, that neither has been able to forget it, even after the passing of over a decade. And when Allison gets one good look at a picture of Dexter Needham at age ten, and holds it up next to a school portrait of Ethan, suddenly Ethan's special talents in science class don't seem so random after all . . . and Allison's life and everything she has ever believed is about to get turned upside down in the most wonderful of ways . . .

Risky Business
Tom Riley sells insurance policies while privately daydreaming about being a private detective. With fantasies much livelier than his real life, into his life walks Marla Meyers, a six–foot tall semi–supermodel. Accident–prone Marla has been ordered to get insurance for her face after she tripped into a dress dummy and got a black eye. Before she can collect on the policy, Tom must watch Marla's face for the next 30 days.

The Forever Summer
The Awful Truth About Emily Ruth!

Lucas Griffin has come to Port Gamble for one purpose: to get the Griffin family summer home out of the clutches of his evil ex-wife, Emily Ruth Griffin.

But before he can blink twice, she drops dead in the local grocery market. Now he's stuck with her ghost, and her little dog, too.

Not-So-Dearly Departed Lila Abbott has had her fill of rich summer people who crowd Port Gamble every year. Townie girls and summer boys just don't mix, and she's learned that the hard way.

But Lucas Griffin has a ghost problem that only Lila can solve, and she finds herself knee-deep in Cheez Whiz while Lucas and the deceased Emily Ruth duke it out.

Working together to clear his name and get rid of their pesky poltergeist, Lucas and Lila find themselves falling in love. Maybe this will finally be the forever summer for Lila Abbott.

Talk of the Town
She's about to give everyone something to talk about!

Nothing can put a damper on a wedding day quite like discovering your Mr. Right is Mr. Totally Beyond Wrong, which is why Kelly Atwood knocks him flat and boards a bus to a tiny Washington town. What Kelly doesn't know is that she's accidentally taken off with a suitcase full of lots of money and now some unsavory characters are determined to get it back.

The townsfolk are unperturbed by the gorgeous outsider -- even if her skirts are too short and her hair is too big. In fact, the local busybodies are already trying to match her up with blue-eyed local hero -- upright attorney Sam Grayson.

One look at Kelly, and Sam gets hot around his too-tight collar. This runaway bride is definitely disturbing his peace, and he's got enough problems. But now big trouble is heading to Paradise, right on Kelly's stiletto heels -- and passion may temporarily have to take a back seat to a more pressing pursuit -- running for her life.

Faking her way through Jillian's job has Jana Lee ducking for cover under piles of paperwork!

Now the game is afoot in earnest -- and Amelia nearly swoons to discover the detective assigned to "assist" her is a handsome, brilliant, and breathtaking investigator who might as well be a young SherlockHolmes himself!

Deliciously Wicked (Ladies' Amateur Sleuth Society #2)
When wildly independent Meg Piddington finds herself locked in her father's chocolate factory after hours with a most disarmingly attractive gentleman, she doesn't realize that she is his alibi - proof that Gareth Mandeville did not commit a dastardly crime. But admitting as much would destroy her reputation, which gallant Gareth refuses to do. Besides, he believes even prison would be preferable to marriage, which is what their revelation would certainly demand!

At last, here's the perfect opportunity for Meg to don her sleuthing hat to get to the root of the secretive stranger's troubles! Besides, the man sends oh-so-pleasant shivers coursing through her body. And though heaven may well await in Gareth's embrace, danger may dwell there also . . . if the determined lady embarks on a grand mission to win his love.

Of course, this will bring her into a most uncomfortable proximity with the very tantalizing Mister Sterling. And try as she might, she finds resisting him her most difficult challenge.

James has always preferred gritty crime scenes to elegant balls. And he can immediately deduce that straight-laced, whip-smart—and exceedingly delectable—Willow isn't your average vapid, shallow socialite. He longs to release her carefully restrained sensuality and tempt her into losing control. But James doesn't count on risking his own heart in the process.

The Mistress Diaries ($1.99), by Julianne MacLean
Book Description
A proper lady would never let herself become his mistress . . .

Your Republic Is Calling You ($2.29), by Young-ha Kim and Chi-Young Kim (Translator)
Book Description
A foreign film importer, Gi-yeong is a family man with a wife and daughter. An aficionado of Heineken, soccer, and sushi, he is also a North Korean spy who has been living among his enemies for twenty-one years.

Suddenly he receives a mysterious email, a directive seemingly from the home office. He has one day to return to headquarters. He hasn’t heard from anyone in over ten years. Why is he being called back now? Is this message really from Pyongyang? Is he returning to receive new orders or to be executed for a lack of diligence? Has someone in the South discovered his secret identity? Is this a trap?

Spanning the course of one day, Your Republic Is Calling You is an emotionally taut, psychologically astute, haunting novel that reveals the depth of one particularly gripping family secret and the way in which we sometimes never really know the people we love. Confronting moral questions on small and large scales, it mines the political and cultural transformations that have transformed South Korea since the 1980s. A lament for the fate of a certain kind of man and a certain kind of manhood, it is ultimately a searing study of the long and insidious effects of dividing a nation in two.

Today's backlist/small press/indie, totally free, books for everyone on Kindle. These are are not likely to be free for long, so double check prices before one-clicking (genres are my best guess), as most of them go back up after a day or two (sometimes less), at which point most of them become eligible for the Kindle Lending Library.

Free Book - The Mockingbird Parables (K/N/E)

The Mockingbird Parables: Transforming Lives through the Power of Story, by Matt Litton, is free in the Kindle store and from Barnes & Noble and Christian Book, courtesy of Christian publisher Tyndale House.
Book Description
The Mockingbird Parables takes readers on an inspiring and engaging journey through Harper Lee’s beloved 1960 literary masterpiece, introducing each character through the lens of faith. The enigmatic Boo Radley as an allegorical representation of God, “the divine, mysterious neighbor” who watches over, protects, and longs to know his children personally. The hero, Atticus Finch, as a model of faith, integrity, and even parenting. The main character, Scout Finch, and what she might teach us about the role of women in church and society.

The Mockingbird Parables compels us to ask the often-ignored questions: Do we truly love our neighbors? Are we building community? Are we influencing society for the better? By illuminating the parallels between Christian faith and Lee’s masterpiece, The Mockingbird Parables reaffirms the magnitude of a novel perhaps more relevant today than ever before.

Read an eBook Week - Day 1

It's that time of year again, when publishers and authors give us tons of free books, in order to entice us to read an eBook (something that made a lot more sense before the Kindle, when few people read ebooks). Some of the specials are all week long, such as the promo over at Smashwords, where you'll find hundreds of books marked down or free for the week, while others are single day offers (sometimes with a new one each day). I'll try to track down and post the daily offers, but you may want to explore the official Read an EBook Week site to see the other offers that are being posted by authors, publishers and retail outlets.

Time limited offers:
I suggest using Internet Explorer for those last three, as I had problems getting them with FireFox.

Free Book - The Bond (K-OTHER)

The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them, by Wayne Pacelle, is free in the Kindle store, but only for customers in selected regions: Asia & Pacific, India, the Middle East and Latin America & the Carribean. The book is listed on the Limited Time Offers page at Amazon, so it doesn't appear that the free price is a mistake, but it is a bit odd that most countries were overlooked (it's either $13 or more or completely unavailable in the primary regions for Amazon books: US, UK, AU, EU and CA).
Book Description
A fascinating exploration of humanity's eternal bond with animals, and an urgent call to answer the needs of millions of at-risk creatures

A landmark work, The Bond is the passionate, insightful, and comprehensive examination of our special connection to all creatures, written by one of America's most important champions of animal welfare. Wayne Pacelle, the president of the Humane Society of the United States, unveils the deep links of the human-animal bond, as well as the conflicting impulses that have led us to betray this bond through widespread and systemic cruelty to animals.

Pacelle begins by exploring the biological and historical underpinnings of the human-animal bond and reveals our newfound understanding of animals, including their remarkable emotional and cognitive capacities. In the book's second section, Pacelle shows how the bond has been disastrously broken. He takes readers to a slaughter plant shuttered for inhumane practices, as well as the enormous egg factory farms of California. We visit Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas to speak with NFL star Michael Vick, then serving his sentence for dogfighting. Pacelle paints a portrait of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and highlights the heroic actions of residents and volunteers to reunite pets with their owners. Pacelle's narrative also leads the reader to remote locations in which conflicts over the killing of wildlife continue to play out—from the fields outside of Yellowstone National Park where bison are slaughtered with the encouragement of federal authorities, to the ice floes of Atlantic Canada where seal nurseries turn into killing fields.

In its final section, The Bond takes on the arguments of opponents and critics of animal protection and spotlights the groups and industries standing in the way of progress—from the National Rifle Association and agribusiness organizations like the American Farm Bureau, to surprising adversaries like the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Kennel Club. Ultimately, Pacelle points the way to a new, humane economy—one not built on extraction, suffering, and killing, but on the celebration, stewardship, and care of animals.

An eye-opening must-read, The Bond reminds us that animals are at the center of our lives, they are not just a backdrop. How we treat them is one of the great themes of the human story.

Free Book - A Place at the Table (K/N/E)

A Place at the Table: A 40-Day Journey of Grace, by Chris Seay, is free in the Kindle store and from Barnes & Noble and ChristianBook, courtesy of Christian publisher Baker Books (which means it is likely a one-day freebie).
Book Description
In a culture built on consumption--especially of food--it is easy to forget the poor that Jesus cared so much about. Following the pattern of his successful Advent Conspiracy, Chris Seay invites readers on a journey of self-examination, discipline, and renewed focus on Jesus that will change their lives forever.

He challenges readers to eat like the poor for forty days in solidarity with a much-neglected group of people, and to donate the money they save on groceries to a charity or project that serves the poor in concrete ways. But he doesn't expect them to go it alone. A Place at the Table includes a short chapter for each of those forty days with Scripture, reflections, prayers, encouragement, and tips for engaging the whole family in the process. The six-session DVD, shot in such locations as the Holy Land, Haiti, and Ecuador, will help small groups and entire churches go on a passionate journey of radical faith, personal action, solidarity with the poor, and extravagant grace.

If you have a free account at Box.Net (now also box.com), you can upgrade your 5GB storage to 50GB free storage for life, by logging into your account using the Box Android App (or on your Blackberry Playbook). You have to use the Marketplace app, though, not the one in the Amazon Appstore (which runs on the Kindle Fire) - once you do, your increased free storage is available via the web, on the Kindle Fire or using the App on your App iOS device, so it's well worth finding a friend that will let you log in once using their Android Phone or tablet (just be sure to go into settings and find the app, then clear data, which removes your login info once you are done). You might also try to track down the standard .apk file for Box and install that on your Kindle Fire (although I just used my smartphone to increase my storage). That's a huge increase in storage and puts what I have in DropBox or from Amazon into a distant second place as an option for backing up files. I know that the offer works, but don't know the exact cutoff date - second hand, it appears you have until March 23 to login and get the extra space.

Ghosty Men: The Strange but True Story of the Collyer Brothers, New York's Greatest Hoarders ($0.99), by Franz Lidz, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. It has mostly good reviews and a few very low ones that thought it too short (in material or length), but at a dollar, I suspect it's a must buy for anyone who has watched any of the modern shows on hoarders.
Book Description
A true tale of changing New York by Franz Lidz, whose Unstrung Heroes is a classic of hoarder lore.

Homer and Langley Collyer moved into their handsome brownstone in white, upper-class Harlem in 1909. By 1947, however, when the fire department had to carry Homer's body out of the house he hadn't left in twenty years, the neighborhood had degentrified, and their house was a fortress of junk: in an attempt to preserve the past, Homer and Langley held on to everything they touched.

The scandal of Homer's discovery, the story of his life, and the search for Langley, who was missing at the time, rocked the city; the story was on the front page of every newspaper for weeks. A quintessential New York story of quintessential New York characters, Ghosty Men is a perfect fit for Bloomsbury's Urban Historicals series.

Present Danger ($1.57 / £0.99 UK), by Stella Rimington, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $8.16).
Book Description
When MI5 officer Liz Carlyle arrives in Belfast, danger immediately follows – she quickly learns that the peace process in the province is precarious.

Liz suspects The Fraternity to be a front for renegade IRA men. Also it looks as though a plot is being hatched against the security forces. Liz and her colleague Dave Armstrong believe that a former French Intelligence officer is involved. But during their investigations, Dave goes missing. Liz fears the worst, especially when she discovers that the obvious suspects have all disappeared.

Free Book - Pilgrimage to the End of the World (P)

Pilgrimage to the End of the World: The Road to Santiago de Compostela ($11.36 paperback), by Conrad Rudolph, is this month's free book from The University of Chicago Press (no Kindle edition).
Book Description
Traveling two and a half months and one thousand miles along the ancient route through southern France and northern Spain, Conrad Rudolph made the passage to the holy site of Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important modern-day pilgrimage destinations for Westerners. In this chronicle of his travels to this captivating place, Rudolph melds the ancient and the contemporary, the spiritual and the physical, in a book that is at once travel guide, literary work, historical study, and memoir.

Spring is the season for a pilgrimage, observed Chaucer. Rudolph traces the famous Camino de Santiago—the Way of St. James—a pilgrimage route from La Puy in France, through the Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. It’s a route followed by millions from medieval times to the present (and was also followed by Martin Sheen in the 2010 film, The Way.) Rudolph’s book is at once travel guide, literary work, historical study, and memoir.

Mine arrived within seconds -- you get a .ACSM file, which, when opened, will load the PDF book inside of Adobe ADE. This is a DRM'd PDF and is not compatible with the Kindle.
