Free Book (Kindle) - Declaring Spinsterhood

Declaring Spinsterhood, by Jamie Lynn Braziel, is free in the Kindle store.
Book Description
Emma Bailey is thirty years old and single. No problem for her, but a point of round-the-clock contention for her mother, her family, and too many of her friends. In Jamie Lynn Braziel's Declaring Spinsterhood, the terminal illness known as "old maid" is explored from every angle, and the result is a compassionate, compelling, and wickedly funny novel. Emma may stand up before all and declare her intention to never marry, but what about that little place in her heart reserved for Brian Davis? Sure, Brian's seeing someone, and Emma is not a vixen who breaks up relationships, but would it be so terrible if Brian returned the interest? Rather than bide her time, Emma dates…and dates. Some of the men are charming, others less so. With her vow of spinsterhood more a noose than a friend, Emma musters her courage and moves on. That is, until the unforeseen throws up the biggest obstacle of her life: love.

Free Book (Kindle) - A Married Man's Guide To Christmas

A Married Man's Guide To Christmas, by Robert Henry, is free in the Kindle store.
Book Description
In the great tradition of guy-humor everywhere, here comes humorist Robert Henry’s growling, good-hearted rant about holiday madness, A MARRIED MAN’S GUIDE TO CHRISTMAS. Henry reveals the truth about Christmas through the eyes of a typical married man. “Remember, it’s not how you celebrate the joyous season. It’s whether you are still alive, married, sleeping indoors, with a healthy prostate, and without a rap sheet on January 4th that counts.”

Husbands will laugh out loud. Dads will slap their knees and keel over (have CPR ready). Wives, daughters, sisters, mothers, aunts, female co-workers and sales clerks who dread seeing men mumble and mutter their way through the Christmas section at BIG BOX DISCOUNT WAREHOUSE will nod in recognition at the syndrome best described as “CAN I SURVIVE UNTIL NEW YEAR’S?”

A Married Man’s Guide To Christmas is a must for every guy who wants the women in his life to understand why he’d rather buy them gift certificates than brave the treacherous online world of lingerie catalogs. Why have just a joyous season, when you can have a Christmas filled with laughs that don’t include finding pictures of Uncle Herbert in a teddy?

Irreverent, honest, and biodegradable, Robert Henry has captured the essence of the holiday season for all men in A Married Man’s Guide To Christmas. So grab it today for all the beleaguered males on your Xmas list and all the long-suffering females who just want the lights strung on the front porch by Christmas Eve, the honey-do list completed before Aunt Sookie arrives with her flatulent Pekinese, and that expensive bottle of Scotch left mostly full until the tinsel is hung, the presents are wrapped, and the home owner’s association has accepted your apology for spelling out a less-than-jolly greeting in solar-powered candy canes on your front lawn.

If you have an Android Phone or an iPhone (or iPad, I suppose), Amazons is running a special deal tomorrow - use their Price Check app to check a price in Electronics, Toys, Sports, Music, or DVDs (with location info enabled) and optionally let Amazon know the store price, putting up to three items into your cart using the Price Check app. If you purchase the item within 24 hours, you'll get 5% off (up to $5 each) at checkout. The promotion actually starts tonight (to hit midnight on east coast) and runs all day: starts 9:00 pm (PST) December 9, 2011 and ends 11:59 pm (PST) December 10, 2011.

This won't work with your Kindle Fire, though, as you don't have location services and the Amazon branded app won't install on the fire (although if you have rooted it, you might get the one from the Android Market running, I'm not sure if the lack of location services might not be an issue).

I checked today's 10 cent apps over in the Google Market and none of them are marked down at Amazon (yet - I reported the lower price on several); the good news was that I already had several of them in my Amazon library (from past free App of the Day finds), which only left four that I was really interested in -- they'll still play on my tablet or phone (or on the Kindle Fire, if I ever get around to rooting it, which looks fairly easy). If you are into games, it looks like Jakyl, makers of one of today's featured apps, has all their paid apps marked down to 99 cents for the 10BN sale (just in the Google market, though).
Book Description

All She Ever Wanted ($1.49), by Barbara Freethy, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
From #1 New York Times Bestselling Author comes a romantic and suspenseful story of three best friends and a terrible, life-changing secret.

She was their closest friend, or so they thought -- until years later, when her secrets send them on a perilous search for the truth about who she really was ... and why she died ...

Ten years ago, during a party gone out of control, beautiful, vibrant Emily plummeted to her death, leaving her three best friends and sorority sisters -- Natalie, Laura and Madison -- devastated. None of them has ever forgotten that night -- or the role each may have played in Emily's death, the guilt that has pursued them, and the loss they still suffer.

Now an unknown writer has rocketed onto bestseller lists with a novel that eerily mirrors their own story. Who is he? How does he know the intimate details of their lives? And why is he accusing one of them of murder? As they begin to unravel the startling truth about their friend, each will rediscover a love she lost long ago and uncover secrets that will forever change her life...

The Graveyard Book ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell (Illustrator), is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $7.99).
Book Description
When a baby escapes a murderer intent on killing the entire family, who would have thought it would find safety and security in the local graveyard?
Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.

A stunningly original novel deftly constructed over eight chapters, featuring every second year of Bod's life, from babyhood to adolescence. Will Bod survive to be a man?

Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation In Everyday Life ($3.75 Kindle, B&N), by Jon Kabat-Zinn, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle.
Book Description
When Wherever You Go, There You Are was first published in 1994, no one could have predicted that the book would launch itself onto bestseller lists nationwide and sell over 750,000 copies to date. Ten years later, the book continues to change lives.

The author of Full Catastrophe Living explains how anyone can use mindfulness--the art of living each moment fully as it happens--to reduce anxiety, achieve inner peace, and enrich life, offeing the most enlightening exploration yet of the principles of mindfulness--the ancient Buddhist method of stress reduction. Kabat-Zinn blends stories, anecdotes, poems, images, and scientific observations with easily followed instructions in the art of "capturing" the present and living fully within each moment in order to achieve inner peace.

Book Description
This enchanting illustrated book captures the same magical spirit found in the film. The Beatles’ journey to save Pepperland from the music-hating Blue Meanies is filled with surrealistic humor, wit, and clever references to The Beatles’ song titles and lyrics. Android Appsale - 10 cent Apps

Google is celebrating 10 Billion Downloads in the Android Market, with 10 apps for 10 cents apiece every day (for 10 days, but we missed a couple). I played around trying to get these with the Android simulator (but had no success) and did find on my tablet or phone that I first had to log in to the Google Wallet and update my payment method (since it had been a while since I purchased anything in the Market). But, one neat thing I found is that some of the apps that are on sale are also the same price in the Amazon Appstore today, such as TETRIS and Space Physics, which I just picked up for a dime apience and which work with the Kindle Fire and my Asus tablet (unlike the versions in the Google Market, such as Tetris, which was only going to work with my phone). I did pick up Talking Tom 2 from Google and there are several other apps worth looking at, if only to see if one you are interested in is also in the Amazon store.

Check back each day until the promotion ends and then double check the Amazon Appstore, if you want the app on your Kindle Fire (today's score: I bought three from Amazon and four from Google, so a total of 70 cents!).

Two Free Books by Claudia Gray (Kindle) [AU]

Two more free books in the Evernight series by Claudia Gray in the Kindle store, both of them only for Australian customers. These also look to be mis-priced, as one is the latest in the series and the other is the pre-order of her latest novel, so those that can should grab them fast. Combined with the bonus edition of Evernight, you'll have three of the five titles in the series.

Afterlife, fourth in the Evernight series

Haunted by his powerful need to kill, Lucas can turn to only one place for help . . . Evernight Academy. Bianca is determined to remain with him. But with the vampire leader of Evernight waging a war against wraiths, her former home has become the most dangerous place she could be, despite the new powers her ghostly transformation has given her.

Balthazar, fifth in the Evernight series (pre-order)
Book Description

Now Redgrave plans to use Skye’s powers for his own evil purposes.

Balthazar will do whatever it takes to stop Redgrave and exact his long-awaited revenge against his killer. As Skye and Balthazar stand together to fight him, they grow closer—first unwillingly, then undeniably. Balthazar realizes his lonely world could finally be changed by her. . . .

In a story filled with forbidden love and dark suspense, one of the most beloved characters in Claudia Gray’s New York Times bestselling Evernight series will captivate readers with his battle to overcome his past and follow his heart.

Free Book (Kindle) - Training in Your Naked Dating Thong

Training in Your Naked Dating Thong: Preparing to Find the Love of Your Life (While Fully Clothed), by Harlan Cohen, is free to pre-order in the Kindle store. I'd guess that this will end up being a short ebook, likely promoting Naked Dating: Five Steps to Finding the Love of Your Life (While Fully Clothed & Totally Sober) ... but the title is fun (even if it might not be one you want others on your Kindle account to see).
Book Description
Harlan Cohen, bestselling author of The Naked Roommate, introduces you to his proven method for finding the love you deserve. With a drop of reality, a little personal assessment, and a whole lot of love for yourself, he teaches you to train physically, emotionally, and spiritually in your "thong," and be comfortable in your skin. You’ll learn to love what you can’t change, and change what you don’t love – to find the love of your life.

Today's Deals

Additional formats on free books:
Today is the last day to take advantage of this KSO deal:

Anyone can get a free 90-day subscription to The New Yorker ($2.99.month), a weekly periodical for all Kindle eInk devices. If you do decide to continue, you'll also enjoy a much lower monthly cost than the interactive edition for those with a Kindle Fire, who can also get a free 90-day trial, but are looking at $5.99/month or $59.99/year (although it appears it is free if you are already a print subscriber). I have to admit, I'm enjoying my free trial, even though some of movies (and most of the plays) will never make it to my area (and I really don't need to know who is playing at every night club in NYC). There are book reviews, opinion pages and political content, as well as info on what is going on in the Big Apple.
Book Description
The New Yorker offers a smart, lively, and timely mix of politics and world affairs, business and science, and arts and letters. Its writers and artists, the finest working today, fill the magazine with award-winning reporting, criticism, fiction, poetry -- and cartoons.

The Kindle Edition of The New Yorker will usually include all articles, fiction, and poetry found in the print edition and a selection of cartoons, but will not include other images at this time. For your convenience, issues are auto-delivered wirelessly to your Kindle at the same time the print edition hits the newsstand each Monday.

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher ($1.99), by Kate Summerscale, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. I've read a very good recommendation on this one, comparing it to an Anne Perry novel.
Book Description
In June of 1860 three-year-old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outdoor privy with his throat slit. The crime horrified all England and led to a national obsession with detection, ironically destroying, in the process, the career of perhaps the greatest detective in the land.

At the time, the detective was a relatively new invention; there were only eight detectives in all of England and rarely were they called out of London, but this crime was so shocking, as Kate Summerscale relates in her scintillating new book, that Scotland Yard sent its best man to investigate, Inspector Jonathan Whicher.
Whicher quickly believed the unbelievable-that someone within the family was responsible for the murder of young Saville Kent. Without sufficient evidence or a confession, though, his case was circumstantial and he returned to London a broken man. Though he would be vindicated five years later, the real legacy of Jonathan Whicher lives on in fiction: the tough, quirky, knowing, and all-seeing detective that we know and love today…from the cryptic Sgt. Cuff in Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone to Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade.

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher is a provocative work of nonfiction that reads like a Victorian thriller, and in it Kate Summerscale has fashioned a brilliant, multilayered narrative that is as cleverly constructed as it is beautifully written.

Victim Six ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Gregg Olsen, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $4.73). On both sides of the ocean, though, you can pre-order The Bone Box at a good price ($1.99 in the US; £1.48 UK).
Victim Six
The bodies are found in towns and cities around Puget Sound. The young women who are the victims had nothing in common-except the agony of their final moments. But somebody carefully chose them to stalk, capture, and torture...a depraved killer whose cunning is matched only by the depth of his bloodlust. But the dying has only just begun. And next victim will be the most shocking of all...

The Bone Box
They call it the Bone Box. A collection of old cases, solved and unsolved, that continue to haunt forensic pathologist Birdy Waterman. None is more disturbing than the first. After two decades, Birdy still remembers the screaming. The blood on the boy's hands. The body of a girl, butchered in the woods. Birdy's testimony helped put her cousin behind bars. Now, twenty years later, she wants to reopen the box. Reexamine the evidence. And rekindle her fears that a killer walked free--and is closer than ever.

Final Justice ($1.98 Kindle, B&N), a romantic suspense by novel Marta Perry, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle. This is her sole contribution to the shared world Reunion Revelations series (where it is listed as the sixth novel).
Book Description
He was a father? A DNA test revealed that Mason Grant had a nine-year-old daughter. He'd had no idea that the woman he'd loved and so tragically lost had been pregnant. Or that his own child had been in the custody of the woman's murderer all these years.

Now the killer wanted Mason to pay in more ways than one for the return of the girl. And for daring to find love with old friend Jennifer Pappas. But the only payback the cold-blooded murderer would get was final justice.

Free Book (Kindle) - Dangerous Angels

Update: This deal is now gone.

Dangerous Angels, an omnibus collection of the young adult Weetzie Bat series by Francesca Lia Block, is free to pre-order in the Kindle store. I actually expect that this is a mispricing, so grab it quick and don't wait until the release date (unless you absolutely must, due to not having a credit card on file). The price when you order (currently $0.00) is what you pay on delivery, regardless of release price (the only exception would be if it went down in price, which can't happen on a free book).
Book Description
For a limited time, the collection of Francesca Lia Block’s Weetzie Bat books, Dangerous Angels, is available with a special sneak peek of Pink Smog, a new prequel to Weetzie Bat, and excerpts to the lush paranormal romances Pretty Dead and The Frenzy.

Love is a dangerous angel. . . .

In five luminous novels, acclaimed writer Francesca Lia Block spins a saga of interwoven lives and beating hearts. These postmodern fairy tales take us to a magical Los Angeles, a place where life is a mystery, pain can lead to poetry, strangers become intertwined souls, and everyone is searching for the most beautiful and dangerous angel of all: love.

Free Book (Kindle) - Evernight

Update: This deal is now gone.

Evernight with Bonus Materials, the first title in the young adult Evernight series by Claudia Gray, is free to pre-order in the Kindle store.

Edit to add: If you are in Australia, try to grab the last two in the series, which are currently free in the Kindle store.

Book Description
For a limited time, Claudia Gray’s star-crossed paranormal romance Evernight is available with a special sneak peek of Balthazar, the upcoming Evernight companion novel, and excerpts of the rest of the Evernight series, including Stargazer, Hourglass, and Afterlife.

Bianca wants to escape.

She's been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in.

Then she meets Lucas. He's not the "Evernight type" either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him.

"I couldn't stand it if they took it out on you," he tells Bianca, "and eventually they would."

But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can't be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed.

Free Book (Kindle) - A Dixie Christmas

A Dixie Christmas, an anthology by Sandra Hill, is free in the Kindle store.
Book Description
Two magnolias-and-mistletoe-inspired holiday stories from the bestselling author of more than thirty romantic, humorous novels.

Laughter and love combine in Sandra Hill’s BLUE CHRISTMAS — with a touch of Elvis magic. Wealthy Wall Street businessman Clayton Jessup III has only one reason for arriving in Memphis a few days before Christmas — to sell off his inheritance, an embarrassingly kitschy hotel named The Blue Suede Suites. His feelings for the Land of Elvis are dark: his long-dead Memphis mother abandoned him and his dad when Clay was a baby, and now Clay wants nothing to do with a southern legacy that couldn’t be more different from his sophisticated big-city life.

But then he steps in trouble—literally—when he confronts the bizarre group of Elvis impersonators who’ve set up a living Nativity scene on his property. One slip of a wingtip in some sheep poop lands Clay in the care of gorgeous Annie Fallon, whose big-haired Elvis-girlfriend get-up can’t hide her wholesome, sexy appeal. Annie and her brothers have set up the Nativity scene to earn some badly needed money for their struggling dairy farm.

The last thing she needs is an angry Yankee with a concussion and a come-hither smile . . .

In JINX CHRISTMAS, sexy NASCAR star Lance Caslow makes a last-ditch effort to win back his ex-wife Brenda. Five years ago, his reckless pursuit of racetrack fame tore them apart and broke Brenda’s heart. Now Lance shows up in Louisiana determined to make things right this Christmas, not just for himself and Brenda, but for their young daughter, Patti.

He’s got his work cut out for him, and desperate measures are needed. Lance will do anything to prove he’s worthy of Brenda’s trust again — even join the Cajun Christmas show starring a raucous Cajun family whose menfolk dance for charity events in little more than a smile . . .

Kindle Kandle 75% Off Sale

ETA: 12/8/11 Just to clarify, you won't see the sale price until you go to the final checkout page. Put your choices into your cart, click on Proceed to Checkout and then look under "Promotion Applied" at the top right, in the summary box. That's the only place you will see the discount amount. I just double checked this morning by placing one of each in my cart and the sale is still on, as of 9 AM.

This isn't quite as good as the sale last year, but if you've been wanting a reading light for your Kindle or other ereader or a gift for a stocking stuffer for any reader on your list, you might want to check out the current sale on these two new models. Both ships with 2 CR2032 batteries installed (there is usually a plastic pull strip you remove, so the batteries are engaged), a bonus set of extra batteries, and a protective pouch included. Everything needed to use it and keep it in place when you aren't reading.

Just stick one or more in your cart and go thru the checkout process - the discount should show up automatically. You get 1/2 off the current 50% sale price, which is a 75% total discount. Note that the Kandle offer sold out quickly last year, so be sure to act quickly. Only these Kandles that are "Sold by Ozeri and Fulfilled by Amazon" qualify for the discount. Make sure that you still see this text under Special Offers and Product Promotions:
CHRISTMAS SUPER SALE WHILE SUPPLIES LAST, Save 50% on each Kandle by Ozeri II in White and Kandle by Ozeri Flex in Black when you purchase 1 or more.

Kindle Keyboard Holiday Sellouts Begin

Update: 12/8/11 I just noticed some new shipping info on the Kindle pages at Amazon : Ordering for Christmas? To ensure delivery by December 24, choose Two-Day Shipping at checkout.

The holiday sellout of Kindles has begun at Amazon, with the $99 Special Offers Kindle Keyboard being the first to disappear this year. This means the least expensive Kindle with a Keyboard is now $139, unless you grab one of the refurbished units (while they last), although you might still find these at some local stores. I keep seeing rumors that the Keyboard versions are being run out of stock and will drop off the catalog, but nothing from Amazon has confirmed that. It is more likely that they have simply sold out of stock and rather than have a bunch of pre-orders that can't be filled by Christmas, they elected to remove the buy button from the model in question. The KindleDX is also still available (but back to full price), but you really have to search for it, as it doesn't appear on the Kindle Family banner any longer.

For those who are considering picking up a Kindle for a gift, I'm going to list the models and their status below, with any refurbished ones linked in, if available. Remember, you can opt in to Special Offers with an eInk model, and then opt out again, at no charge (as many times as you want); if you purchase a Special Offers version up front, though, you do have to pay the discounted difference in price the first time you opt out of the Offers (but can then switch back and forth at will with these, as well). Not all refurbished units are heavily discounted, but two are, so I've bolded them, below. Also, some of these appear to be more limited in stock, as they are showing a message that orders are prioritized on a first-come-first-served basis in the US (I've marked these with an asterisk), although that may just be some text left over from when you could pre-order these models..

Free Book (EPUB/nook) - The Unfinished Gift

The Unfinished Gift ($6.99 Kindle), by Dan Walsh, is free from Barnes & Noble and Sony, but not on Kindle. Be sure to report the lower price to Amazon, as these freebies from Christian publisher Revell often only last for a day or two.
Book Description
Patrick Collins is seven years old, and on his Christmas list are only three items. He wants the army to find his father. He wants to leave his grandfather's house. And, for reasons even he doesn't understand, he wants the soldier that's tucked away in his grandfather's attic.

Set at Christmastime in 1943, The Unfinished Gift tells in an engaging, simple style the story of a family, and reminds us of the surprising things that affect powerful change in our hearts--like a young boy's prayers, a shoebox full of love letters, and even an old wooden soldier, long forgotten. This nostalgic story of forgiveness will engage readers everywhere.

Save an additional 10% on Clothing, Shoes & Accessories at 6pm.com

Once you have the promotional code, you have until January 10, 2012. to complete your purchase. Like previous offers, this one requires you to use the full checkout process in order to enter your promotional code. Also, like all Amazon sales that use promotional codes, if you have a gift card balance, you must use it for the payment (if there is not a sufficient balance, then you can pick which credit card or other payment to use).

Limit one offer per customer and per device.

6pm.com is a sort of subsidiary of Amazon, in that it was acquired by Zappos.com in 2007 and, in turn, Zappos was purchased by Amazon in 2009. It looks like the 10% discount works on an entire order, including their clearance items, so you might be able to find a few good deals, if you poke around.

This offer is for those with a Kindle with Special Offers (including any Kindle Touch or Kindle Keyboard that opts in to Special Offers).

Buy 1 of 100 Mysteries & Thrillers for $1

You'll have a promotion code on your account that will apply to the FIRST book you buy (from the list) after that. Note that even if the book is free, you'll pay a dollar, so be careful which one you pick after you enter the code -- make sure you don't grabbing a low cost title by accident, which can happen if you apply the code right away, before you are ready to buy the book. Current prices range from $2.99 to $9.99. You should save the code and not enter it until you are ready to buy a book.

To recap: you must claim the offer by December 10 and must do so from your Kindle with Special Offers. You'll get a promotion code via email and you have until January 7, 2012 to enter and redeem the code. Once you enter it, it will work on the next book on the list that you purchase.

Some of the titles on this one have appeared on several previous offers, but there are also a few new titles thrown in, so you should be able to find (at least) one you want to use the coupon on. I know that I see several series and authors that I have been reading, so once again will have to sample and make a touch decision.

Free Book - 2012 and Beyond (K/N)

Update: 3/7/12 Now free in Spanish from Amazon and B&N.
Update: 12/7/11 Now free from Barnes & Noble.

2012 and Beyond (English/Spanish), by Yehuda Berg, is free in the Kindle store.
Book Description
Drawing wisdom from the Zohar, this short kabbalistic text redefines this legendary period of time as a window for individuals and communities to reach “messiah consciousness.” That means it’s up to people, not some celestial savior, to ignite global change. All the natural disasters poverty, revolutions, anarchy, are wake-up calls to a fragmented humanity. The end is near, but as Yehuda explains this really means “the end of dominance of the human ego. In its place we will experience the unleashing of our true selves – the illuminated human soul.” There must be a critical mass, a certain threshold of transformation to capitalize on this window, and when that occurs, the peoples of the world will function as one body while still appreciating our differences. Our collective minds have the power to bring an end to negative consciousness and birth a new existence right now.

A word about my sponsors (you!)

This message is an updated version of a post that I ran a couple of years ago (has it been that long? Really?). Since the original post, Amazon has added Kindle eBooks to their list of referral eligible products (instead, Android Apps are now excluded) and I've actually made enough referrals from some of the non-Amazon affiliate programs to buy dinner now and then. So, I've edited the original post a bit(and fixed a couple of typos), but it mostly still applies as well today as it did then. I gave up posting my Book Budget some time back, as the ones I purchased were being swamped by the free books on Kindle. I still buy more books than I manage to read, what with free books, $1 KSO books and books bought for others in the household.

As the holiday season approaches, a commercial reminder/note for readers of this blog. As you may (or may not) know, Amazon pays what they now call advertising fees for referrals on Kindle books (of course, any percentage of zero would still be zero, for free books) and other purchases, such as the Kindle itself and Gift Certificates (even if used to later buy Kindle books). Using the links on this blog helps support it, as does using the Amazon search box on the side menu when making non-Kindle book purchases at Amazon. I also make a tiny amount from referrals to some other ebookstores (Barnes & Noble, Kobo, eHarlequin and Smashwords, mostly). Many of the other bargains I post are not affiliate linked - PDF files, free books at Sony, Christian audio, etc., deals at Fictionwise and so on. I post the bargains as I find them (or as you send in tips; thanks to those of you that do), regardless of where they are located.

I've had a few people ask if I've read every bargain book I post. No, I don't - there is no way I physically could do so (I haven't even read thru all the free books Amazon has given us), even if I could afford to do so. I do purchase and read some, with more being bought than I manage to read (just like with my paper library). I do post some reviews (although not for every book I read). Some of these books are provided by the publisher or author and some of them are books I've purchased myself. I have quite a stack of both and limited reading time, so make no promises on reviews for those who send them (and never guarantee a favorable review ... although if a book is one I can't get thru, I'll usually just let the author know and pass on writing a review).

Feel free to use (or not) the links in my posts or on the blog menus when making Amazon purchases; these do help support my efforts (at no additional cost to you) and are greatly appreciated. A few of you have also sent direct PayPal donations (the link is on the right sidebar); these are also very much appreciated (and are usually immediately spent on more books, especially now that Kobo takes PayPal).

Thank you to all that read the blog, whether it's on the web site, on Kindle, the RSS feed or following on Facebook or Twitter. I hope you have a great holiday season and promise that I'll keep posting the bargains I find, to help you stretch the holiday budget. I suspect the free reads and big discounts will continue so long as there is competition amongst ereader devices (just as there was in the BluRay/HD war a few years back), even though the Apple and Agency publishers have taken a number of steps to eliminate that competition. Even as the Agency publishers have stifled competition amongst ebookstores (and withdrawn from libraries, in some instances), they have found they still have to compete for readers and for your money, both against other entertainment options (television, movies, video games, etc) and against the proliferation of other reading choices that we now have. More open e-publishing also has benefited readers and the many authors who have been able to bring their backlists in to "print", either directly or thru a number of small publishers that have sprung up in the last few years.

Books on the Knob is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to amazon.com, endless.com, smallparts.com or myhabit.com.

I've added the Free Android App of the Day on the right sidebar, along with the Free MP3 of the Day. Today's app is a calendar and task manager that syncs with Google Calendar and Tasks (although apparently a few reviewers could not figure out how to do so, others report success). The App changes every day and I know it's easy to forget to check to see what it is (I have too, once or twice).

Unraveling Anne ($1.99), by Laurel Saville, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
“After all, this is my mother we’re talking about. As her daughter, I belonged to her; as my mother, she also belongs to me. I don’t have her anymore, but I still have her story.”

In 1950s Los Angeles, Anne Ford was the epitome of the California golden girl, a former beauty queen and model-turned-fashion designer whose success and charm were legendary. So how is it possible that such a woman could die in squalor, an alcoholic street person brutally murdered in a burnt-out West Hollywood building?

In searching for answers to the heartbreaking trajectory of her mother’s life, writer Laurel Saville plumbed the depths of Anne’s troubled past and her own eccentric childhood to untangle the truth of an exceptional, yet tragic, existence. What she discovered was a woman who was beautiful, well-educated, and talented—yet tormented by internal demons and no match for the hedonistic culture of Southern California in the 1960s and 70s.

With unflinching honesty and stirring compassion, Saville struggles to reconcile the two faces her mother presented the world: the glamour-girl-about-town the public saw and the unpredictable, bitter alcoholic her children knew. Most importantly, Saville explores how what we bring forward from previous generations can shape our own lives, and how compassion and love for a difficult parent can be a person’s bridge to a better life.

Free Audiobook - Beyond Religion

The Audible version of Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World ($9.99 Kindle), by H.H. Dalai Lama and Alexander Norman, is free for anyone with an Audible account (which you have if you have an Amazon account).
Book Description
A stirring call to move beyond religion for the guidance to improve human life on individual, community, and global levels—including a guided meditation practice for cultivating key human values.

Ten years ago, in his best-selling Ethics for a New Millennium, His Holiness the Dalai Lama first proposed an approach to ethics based on universal rather than religious principles. Now, in Beyond Religion, the Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars," he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion—those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way. This is a system of secular ethics that transcends religion as a way to recognize our common humanity and so contributes to a global human community based on understanding and mutual respect.

Beyond Religion is an essential statement from the Dalai Lama, a blueprint for all those who yearn for a life of spiritual fulfillment as they work for a better world.
