Trio of Bargains from Robinson (K)

These all look like publishing errors and are apt to change in price rapidly.

Complete History of Jack the Ripper ($1.31 pre-order), by Sudgen, has the widest availability, including in the US.
Book Description
A comprehensive account of London's celebrated East End killer, revised and updated. The murders in London between 1888-91 attributed to Jack the Ripper constitute one of the most mysterious unsolved criminal cases. This story is the result of many years meticulous research. The author reassesses all the evidence and challenges everything we thought we knew about the Victorian serial killer and the vanished East End he terrorized.

Amelia Peabody Omnibus ($1.31 AU/A&P/India/LA&C, $1.36 UK, $1.35 DE), by Elizabeth Peters, isn't available for the US, but if you are in any of the available regions, it's a terrific deal. This one is a pre-order in some areas, but available now in Australia. Note that for the UK and DE regions, it's only a big bargain if bought in the Main store, not the country specific stores.
Book Description
Amelia Peabody is Elizabeth Peters' most brilliant and best-loved creation, a thoroughly Victorian feminist who takes the stuffy world of archaeology by storm with her shocking men's pants and no-nonsense attitude!

***Join our plucky Victorian Egyptologist , together with her devastatingly handsome and brilliant husband Radcliffe, in another exciting escapadeWhen Lady Baskerville's husband Sir Henry dies after discovering what may have been an undisturbed royal tomb in Luxor, she appeals to eminent archaeologist Radcliffe Emerson and his wife Amelia to take over the excavation. Amid rumours of a curse haunting all those involved with the dig, the intrepid couple proceeds to Egypt, where they begin to suspect that Sir Henry did not die a natural death, and they are confident that the accidents that plague the dig are caused by a sinister human element, not a pharoah's curse

***Join our plucky Victorian Egyptologist , together with her devastatingly handsome and brilliant husband Radcliffe, in another exciting escapadeThe irascible husband of Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody is living up to his reputation as 'The Father of Curses'. Denied permission to dig at the pyramids of Dahshoor, Emerson is awarded instead the 'pyramids' of Mazghunah - countless mounds of rubble in the middle of nowhere. Nothing in this barren spot seems of any interest but then a murder in Cairo changes all of that. The dead man was an antiques dealer, killed in his shop, so when a sinister-looking Egyptian spotted at the crime scene turns up in Mazghunah, Amelia can't resist following his trail. At the same time she has to keep an eagle eye on her wayward son Rameses and his elegant and calculating cat and look into the mysterious disappearance of a mummy case...

***The 1985-96 season promises to be an exceptional one for Egyptologist Amelia Peabody, her dashing husband Emerson and their precocious eight-year-old son Rameses. The much-coveted burial chamber in Dahshoor is theirs for the digging. Yet there is a great evil in the wind that caresses the hot sands sweeping through the bustling streets and marketplaces of Cairo. An expedition cursed by misfortune and the daring moonlit abduction of Rameses alerts Amelia to the presence of her arch-enemy, the Master Criminal. And his is now a personal quest for the most valuable and elusive prize of all: vengeance on the meddling lady archaeologist with the parasol who has sworn to deliver him to justice...Amelia Peabody herself!
In this first adventure, our headstrong heroine decides to use her substantial inheritance to see the world. On her travels, she rescues a gentlewoman in distress - Evelyn Barton-Forbes - and the two become friends. The two companions continue to Egypt where they face mysteries, mummies and the redoubtable Radcliffe Emerson, an outspoken archaeologist, who doesn't need women to help him solve mysteries -- at least that's what he thinks!

Last Seen in Massilia (Roma sub Rosa) ($1.31 AU/A&P/India/LA&C, $1.35 DE), by Steven Saylor, isn't available to the US and isn't a super bargain in the UK ($4.39), but in some regions (including Australia and Asia), it's a super deal on a very good author.
Book Description
As civil war between Caesar and Pompey engulfs the Roman world, Gordianus the Finder receives an anonymous message informing him of the death of his son Meto who has been acting as a double agent for Caesar. The search for Meto's fate brings Gordianus to the besieged seaport of Massilia, which is stubbornly holding out against Caesar's troops. As famine and slaughter threaten the blockaded city, Gordianus is drawn into the intrigues of exiled Romans and duplicitous Massilians. His only friend in the city, Hieronymous, has been made the doomed scapegoat elected by city officials to bear the sins of the populace and save them all from annihilation. Meanwhile, Gordianus is constantly frustrated in his efforts to find out what happened to his son - and when he witnesses the fall of a young woman from a precipice outside the city called the Sacrifice Rock, then the plot begins to thicken...

Free Book - The Squire Quartet (K-AU)

The Squire Quartet, by Brian Aldiss, is free to pre-order for Australian customers in the Kindle store. Since the individual titles are also due to release on April 30, along with this one, and are all priced in the $7.50-$12 range, I strongly suspect this is a pricing error and the price will go up as soon as they figure out what they've done (if your receipt for the pre-order says $0.00, though, that's what you pay, no matter what the price is when the release date hits).
Book Description
For the first time ever, all four books in the Squire Quartet collected in one volume.

Set during the last years of the Cold War, and spanning the duration of Thatcher’s Britain, The Squire Quartet follows the political, professional and private adventures of a group of linked characters. It is a vivid fictional portrait of Britain’s recent history.

All four volumes - Life in the West, Forgotten Life, Remembrance Day and Somewhere East of Life - are collected here for the first time in one volume and for the first time in ebook form.

The Holiday Goddess Handbag Guide to New York, by Jessica Adams, is a free pre-order for Australian customers in the Kindle store. Two others in the series were previously free pre-orders, but are now up to nearly $7 each (for Australians). So far, I don't see these being available, at all, for those in the US.

Four Free Books for Aussies (K)

There are four new pre-orders for Australians in the Kindle store today, all published by HarperCollins. None of these are available for US customers.

Phoenix Rising, a Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences novel by Tee Morris and Pip Ballantine, is the oddest of the lot. This was 99 cents for US customers last December, was delivered, then disappeared from the Kindle market. Now, it's back, but as a free pre-order and only for those in Australia (who could, I suppose, also buy the other version available for Aussies only, which costs $8.72, instead).
Book Description

Evil is most assuredly afoot—and Britain’s fate rests in the hands of an alluring renegade . . . and a librarian.

These are dark days indeed in Victoria’s England. Londoners are vanishing, then reappearing, washing up as corpses on the banks of the Thames, drained of blood and bone. Yet the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences—the Crown’s clandestine organization whose bailiwick is the strange and unsettling—will not allow its agents to investigate. Fearless and exceedingly lovely Eliza D. Braun, however, with her bulletproof corset and a disturbing fondness for dynamite, refuses to let the matter rest . . . and she’s prepared to drag her timorous new partner, Wellington Books, along with her into the perilous fray.

For a malevolent brotherhood is operating in the deepening London shadows, intent upon the enslavement of all Britons. And Books and Braun—he with his encyclopedic brain and she with her remarkable devices—must get to the twisted roots of a most nefarious plot . . . or see England fall to the Phoenix!

The Voice is a novella by Anne Bishop. This one does have a US edition ($2.99), although they are not linked together. Also included is an excerpt from her upcoming Bridge of Dreams (AU/US)
Book Description
In a small village outside the city of Vision, the people know no sorrow or grief. But this seemingly idyllic community is hiding a terrible secret. As a young child, Nalah did not know why she was told to bring a cake to the mute girl known as the Voice whenever she was upset, only that doing so made her feel better. Now grown, Nalah understands the dark truth, and yearns to escape from the oppressive village that has been her life-long home. But it is only after visiting the city of Vision and discovering the Temple of Sorrow that Nalah understands what she must do to be free…

From author Jessica Adams, there are a pair of titles, The Holiday Goddess Handbag Guide to Rome and The Holiday Goddess Handbag Guide to London, from a planned 4-part series (one of which is available,The Holiday Goddess Handbag Guide to New York, just not free, and the last one is not yet listed).

Two More Free Books for Aussies (K)

Another pair of free pre-orders for Australians in the Kindle store today, both published under HarperCollins; one like like it should be under Mischief imprint, but says it is from Avon (also likely not safe for work and definitely not for kids), while the other is a children's title.

4B Goes Wild ($4.99 US / $0.00 AU), by Jamie Gilson
Book Description
Mr. Star broke the news gently. "Well, 4B," he said, "it appears we're going to do it."

It was the talk of last year's fourth, especially the part about the catfish between the principal's sheets. It is the good-behavior reward for this year's fourth grade. It is Outdoor Education: three days at Camp Trotter in Wisconsin.

From where Hobie Hanson sits -- at Central School in Stockton, Illinois -- it is bad news. Three days also means two nights, two nights far from home. The thought brings wooly-worms to his stomach and floods his head with what-ifs. As things turn out, however, Outdoor Education lives up to its name, and in ways that neither Hobie nor his friends expect.

The class, and sub, that kept readers breathless in Thirteen Ways to Sink a Sub are back for another rousing adventure, filled with the sights, sounds, tastes, and, yes, smells familiar to veteran campers everywhere.

Untitled Erotica Novella #3 ($1.99 US / $0.00 AU), by Alice Gaines. She has a number of titles in the Kindle store, from Red Sage publishing and Carina Press, ranging from romance to erotica, and two other upcoming erotica releases, Heat Rises and Untitled Erotica Novella #2. These three seem to be the first ones released under contract to HarperCollins. I looked for more info on this one, but came up blank (she has a blog, but hasn't updated in months and the home page pointed to on her profile page had an elapsed domain name).

Free Book - Skies of Fire [K-AU]

Skies of Fire: The Ether Chronicles ($1.99 US/ $0.00 AU), a steampunk romance by Zoe Archer, is free to pre-order in the Kindle store for Australia customers only. No cover yet and nothing on her website other than the teaser for the title; no doubt this will go up in Australia before release and from the pricing is probably a novella length title (or incorrectly priced for the US, as well).
Book Description
Man made of metal and flesh

Captain Christopher Redmond has just one weakness: the alluring spy who loved and left him years before…when he was still just a man. Now he's superhuman—a Man O' War, made as part of the British Navy's weapons program—and his responsibility is to protect the skies of Europe. If only he could forget Louisa Shaw.

A most inconvenient desire

Louisa, a British Naval Intelligence agent, has never left a job undone. But when her assignment is compromised, the one man who can help her complete her mission is also the only man ever to tempt her body and heart. As burning skies loom and passion ignites, Louisa and Christopher must slip behind enemy lines if they are to deliver a devastating strike against their foe . . . and still get out alive.

Two Free Books for Aussies (K)

There are two new free pre-orders for Australians in the Kindle store today, both published under HarperCollins' Mischief imprint (and likely not safe for work). It looks like both are going to be short story anthologies, from the descriptions, but there are no covers yet (and no authors listed).

Girls Girls Girls Girls Girls: Guy Free Fun ($3.99 US / $0.00 AU), by Various
Book Description
Sapphic love has proven to be one of the most enduring forms of erotic pleasure since the first frolicking nymphs were painted upon the side of amphora. But the secret love of women, without male participation, will never be old hat, because there will always be something deliciously forbidden and titillatingly taboo about the seductions, indiscretions and trysts of one woman with another. And Mischief wouldn’t be a leading publisher of erotica if it didn’t explore, update and let loose these very special feminine lusts of one girl for another.

Improper Conduct: Misbehaviour at Work ($3.99 US / $0.00 AU), by Various
Book Description
The workplace is never exclusively a place for hard graft, tedium and ambition. As we spend over half of our adult lives at work, it has long been a pressure cooker of unrequited desire, barely disguised lust, sexual manipulation, and obsessions for colleagues thinly disguised by professionalism, duty and formality. Which is precisely why Mischief commissioned ten erotica short stories to pursue the explicit shenanigans of work mates who just can’t contain themselves.

Three Free Books for Aussies (K)

A trio of free pre-order books for Australians in the Kindle store today. All are from HarperCollins and are most likely pricing errors that will be corrected later on, but if you order them while they are free, you'll get them at no charge when they are finally released.
Collins New Naturalist Library (9) - A Country Parish, by A. W. Boyd
The natural history of an ordinary English country parish was one of the first subjects that suggested themselves when the New Naturalist series was planned. This edition is exclusive to newnaturalists.com

The natural history of an ordinary English country parish was one of the first subjects that suggested themselves when the New Naturalist series was planned. Being chiefly farmland and therefore practically all man-made, most country parishes are extremely complex from the naturalist’s point of view and also inevitably contain a vast amount of human history. Any attempt to describe their plants and animals has to be closely related with the ways of man himself, who must be regarded as the chief element in the community – a fact which has been obvious enough to naturalists ever since the days of Gilbert White. For this book we are fortunate to have found an author who combines a thorough all-round knowledge of natural history with a sound insight into human customs, history, pastimes and farming methods. Arnold Boyd has lived in Cheshire all his life – since 1902 in the parish of Antrobus, part of the old parish of Great Budworth, the character of which is typical of much of the Cheshire Plain. In keeping with the best tradition of English amateur naturalists, he excels as a collector of facts, as has been apparent from his previous books, his writing in the Manchester Guardian and other journals, and in his assistant editorship of British Birds. By weaving together his collection of facts he presents us with a book of remarkable unity and which shows a wide grasp of every aspect of the living communities. This charming yet erudite portrait will protect his beloved parish forever from the ravages of human forgetfulness.

Plato: Philosophy in an Hour, by Paul Strathern
Philosophy for busy people. Read a succinct account of the philosophy of Plato in just one hour.

Plato is still seen by many as the greatest of all philosophers, inspiring many of the finest thinkers through the ages. Indeed, many see all later philosophy as nothing but attempts to answer the questions he raised. He founded the Academy, the world’s first university, in 387 BC and taught that the physical world is not reality but rather a reproduction of the true source.

Plato: Philosophy in an Hour is a concise, expert account of Plato’s life and philosophical ideas – entertainingly written and easy to understand. Also included are selections from his work, suggested further reading and chronologies that place Plato in the context of the broader scheme of philosophy.

Pretty as a Porn Star, by Madelaine Moore
Emily and Luke meet at film school and become lovers. One night, while they are making love, she notices the red light on his camera. The SOB is recording them! She’s angry but also turned on and gives the sexual performance of her life. Luke confesses that he shoots their nights of passion, but only because his rampant desire for her has ruined him for porn. His only source of visual stimulation is this very private collection of movies. Ever-pragmatic Emily realises that if watching herself in action turns her on, wouldn’t watching themselves do it for other people? The couple begins making private-consumption porn movies that Emily writes and Luke directs. Their crew of film students expands to include ‘talent’ as they branch out into producing porn for sale, often shot guerilla-style, using public events as a backdrop for films with stories and dialogue as well as increasingly dangerous, exciting sex. And Emily’s desperately torn between wanting to star in her own scripts and her fear of discovery. If her lovely but puritanical step-mother, who controls her trust fund, were ever to find out . . . And she does, but with an outcome that Emily could never have predicted.

But the scalding heat of her unsated desire for Devil soon had Honoria craving a very different sort of excitement. Could her passion for Devil cause her to embrace the enchanting peril of a lifelong adventure of the heart?

Sharpe's Christmas (n/a US), by Bernard Cornwell
Book Description
A Richard Sharpe short story, featuring scenes of action and adventure at Christmas.

Christmas, 1813, towards the end of the Peninsular War…

‘You’ll like Irati,’ Colonel Hogan said. ‘It’s a nothing place, Richard. Hovels and misery, that’s all it is and all it ever will be, but that’s where you’re going for Christmas.

’Because maybe the French were going there. The garrison planned to march at Christmas in the hope that their enemies would be too bloated with beef and wine to fight, but Hogan had got wind of their plans and was now setting his snares on the only two routes that the escaping French could use. One, the eastern road, was by far the easier route, for it entered France through a low pass, and Hogan guessed it was that route that the French would choose. But there was a second road, a tight, hard, steep road, and that had to be blocked as well and so the Prince of Wales’s Own Volunteers, Sharpe’s regiment, would climb into the hills and spend their Christmas at a place of hovels and misery called Irati.

There would be no getting bloated with beef and wine for Sharpe and his regiment this Christmas.

You can pre-order A Test of Wills with Bonus Material, the first Ian Rutledge by Charles Todd, for $1.99 in the US ($1.56 UK. Those in Australia get an even better deal, as this edition is free for them (and likely is a pricing error, rather than a price that will spread to the US). If you want to sample first, grab one from the full-price edition, just be sure to pop back by here and grab the lower cost version above.
Book Description
For a limited time, experience the first Ian Rutledge novel from Charles Todd at a special price, including an exclusive excerpt from The Confession, a new Rutledge mystery, available this January.

In A Test of Wills, It is 1919, and the War to End All Wars has been won. But for Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge, recently returned from the battlefields of France, there is no peace. Suffering from shell shock, tormented by the mocking, ever-present voice of the young Scot he had executed for refusing to fight, Rutledge plunges into his work to save his sanity. But his first assignment is a case certain to spell both personal and professional disaster.

A popular colonel has been murdered in Warwickshire, and the main suspect is a decorated war hero and close friend of the Prince of Wales. The case is a political minefield, and no matter what the outcome, Rutledge may not escape with his career intact. And, win or lose, the cost could be even higher: The one witness who could break the case is himself a shell shock victim, teetering on the edge of reality. In this war-ravaged man, Rutledge sees his own possible future, should he fail.

Free Book (Kindle) - The Abolition of Man [AU]

The Abolition of Man ($9.99 US), the Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, is free for Australian customers in the Kindle store. I don't expect it to be free for those in the US.
Book Description
In this graceful work, C. S. Lewis reflects on society and nature and the challenges of how best to educate our children. He eloquently argues that we need as a society to underpin reading and writing with lessons on morality and in the process both educate and re-educate ourselves. In the words of Walter Hooper, "If someone were to come to me and say that, with the exception of the Bible, everyone on earth was going to be required to read one and the same book, and then ask what it should be, I would with no hesitation say The Abolition of Man. It is the most perfectly reasoned defense of Natural Law (Morality) I have ever seen, or believe to exist. If any book is able to save us from future excesses of folly and evil, it is this book." This beautiful paperback edition is sure to attract new readers to this classic book.

The Goat who Sailed the World (set on the Endeavour, with James Cook)
The HM Bark Endeavour is sailing to Tahiti to map the transit of Venus, but there are rumours that once the task is completed, Lieutenant James Cook has a set of secret orders - orders that command him to search for the Great South Land. Isaac is twelve and has joined the crew of the Endeavour as a master's servant, good for scrubbing decks and not much else. He's certainly not considered good enough to fetch hay for the Goat who will provide fresh milk for Cook and his officers. And this goat even has more experience at sea than Isaac - she has already sailed around the world once, watching the ocean and lands slip by from her spot on the quarterdeck. Over the months on board the Endeavour, a friendship grows between the Goat and Isaac, one that will last through shipwreck, bushfire and illness. A friendship that helps in the discovery of exotic new lands ... Ages 9 - 13

The Dog who Loved a Queen (about Mary Queen of Scots)
To the world outside her luxurious prison, Mary Queen of Scots is either a shameless beauty who killed her husband, or the rightful queen of England and Scotland, tragically held captive by Elizabeth the First. But to the dog who loved her, Mary is simply his mistress, and the centre of his life. While Mary desperately plots to seize both her freedom and the throne, her dog Folly's world is one of chasing mice behind the tapestries and enjoying turkey legs with quinces for supper. Until the day comes when they try to take his Queen away ... Based on the true story of the dog who was with Mary when she died, The Dog Who Loved a Queen is a fascinating tale of religious bigotry, plots and passion - and the unquestioning loyalty of a small Scottish terrier.

The Camel who Crossed Australia (about the Burke and Wills expedition)
The story of the famous Burke and Wills expedition ... as it has never been told before The humans called him 'Bell Sing', but to the other camels he is known as 'He Who Spits Further Than the Wind'. Transported from the mountains and deserts of the 'Northwest Frontier' (present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan), Bell Sing accompanies explorers Burke and Wills as they try to cross Australia from south to north. Bell Sing has never had a high opinion of humans - or horses. And this expedition is the worst managed caravan he's even been in. Camel handler Dost Mahomet and soldier John King are also beginning to wonder if their leader is competent, or crazy. Bell Sing can smell water over the sandhills on the horizon ... and freedom too. Can the expedition succeed? And who - if anyone - will survive? This is the gritty and true story about one of the most extraordinary and iconic events in Australia's history. Praise for the Animal Stars series: 'an irreverent and informative charmer' Sunday Age 'This exciting story of adventure and survival against the odds with likeable main characters has greater power than text books to spark new interests and extend existing ones' Viewpoint 'What a delight to read this book! ... I think this book could inspire much original history reading by young readers' Book News 'This is history brought to life for the young reader' Reader's Feast Book Guide Ages 9 - 13

The Donkey who Carried the Wounded (set in Gallipoli in WWI, with Simpson)
Most Australians know of Simpson and his donkey, who became heroes at Gallipoli, even among the Turkish forces. Few know where the donkey came from, or what happened to him after World War I. Or that another man carried on rescuing the wounded with the donkey after Simpson died. This is the story of a small unassuming donkey. It's also the story of Gallipoli, of Jack Simpson, and New Zealander stretcher-bearer Richard Henderson, who literally took up the reins after Simpson's death. Exhaustively researched, it gives a new depth to our understanding of this story of Anzac heroism. 'Jackie French is excellent at telling history in an exciting way for children', writes Burke's Backyard.
