The Hugo NovelsYes, he really did sign it that way! LOL! I know he really enjoyed Feed, as he has been reading the next one in the series when we visit Barnes & Noble (thanks to their Read in Store feature - I'm about done with Hit List that way, as well).
Having taken the time to read the Hugo award nominees for best novel here is a short review and a rating of them by my favorite to least favorite.
The best of a very good group of books is Feed. Not being a big fan of Zombie books myself this was a rollicking ride of a book that left you commenting, cheering and laughing all through it while making an almost believable twist on near future history. 5 stars all the way.
I keep going back and forth on the next 2. In the end I think Cryoburn should get the nod for 2nd as it stands alone better. This may be the best Miles Vorkisigan novel yet in what is a very fun series, but the thing Bujold has always done with this series is make sure that if this is the first one you have read it doesn't mean you have to go back and start over and when your done if she never wrote another in the series you can live with that to. Blackout on the other hand is also excellent and if this is your first introduction to this series that is fine but at the end of Blackout you are immediately in need of All Clear because your left at such a bad spot in the story, so if you get Blackout get All Clear at the same time.
Next is the one fantasy novel on the list, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Note that although I will read fantasy it is not my go to. This is a well written story with some very nice twist and well worth the nomination it received.
Then finally we come to what I call the art book. The Dervish House is one of those books in which the author is so busy looking at relationships and creating pretty pictures that he forgets this is Science Fiction and not a chick flick. It is a pretty book and at least one book every year is in this category but it doesn't mean I have to like them, I don't.
In conclusion four out of five of the nominated novels are very readable which is a great score and if you only get to read one of them, then pick Feed.

Guest Review - The Hugo Awards Nominees (Novels)
One of the Kindles here in the house is in use by my stepson, Brian. When he isn't busy wearing out the five-way on the K2 playing Monopoly, he is reading (seriously, it's even putting a dent into his paperback habit and he only reads hours and hours a day!). One of the reasons I sign up to support the Hugo Awards each year has been to get the voter's packet of books and I put him in charge of reading the lot before I send in my vote. Here is his review of the novels that have been nominated this year. I've added links to the Kindle editions (one is paper only), for those of you that might want to check out one or two (and probably in a better formatted editions, since the voter packet often includes PDFs).
Huge Discount - Kindle 3G with Special Offers for $139!
Big discount today on the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi, with Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers, which Amazon has just marked down to $139! That's $50 less than the non-Special Offers Kindle 3G version, the same prices as the Kindle Wi-Fi and only a $25 premium over the Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers to get world-wide free 3G service.I'm tempted to get another one, just to take advantage of the offers that are one per device (if I order today and get 2nd Day or Overnight shipping, I should have it in time to get another bite at the $1 book offer that is open until the 15th!). Also, my KSO is WiFi only, which means that there are times when I can't look for new books (or use it as a browser); of course, in order to get the ads, you do have to spend some time in WiFi areas, as they only download via WiFi, it seems, but that isn't a problem for me.
Update:The new price is being sponsored by AT&T, who has no doubt looked on with concern at the trend of other ereader companies to drop 3G coverage and for new tablets and readers that are coming out as WiFi versions only. AT&T makes a small amount with every download (although it costs the customer nothing extra), so they would like to see more 3G devices, rather than fewer out there. I know that with the tablets, I would go for a 3G version, but only if it sold with the Kindle model - with no contract required and no monthly cost for 3G service. Instead, I have an (original) iPad that is WiFi only and will no doubt go the same way when I get an Android tablet (later this year: I'm waiting to see if the rumored Kindle Tablet gets released this year - if it does, it should support streaming videos from Amazon, unlike my iPad). Here's the press release with details.

Once Bitten ($9.39 Kindle), by Kalayna Price, is free from Kobo tonight. This title has previously been free on Kindle (Dec '09) and is likely to be free there again in a day or two (most of the Bell Bridge titles do cross over), but you can help it along by reporting the lower price.Book Description
Vampires and Shapeshifters.
A Fictionwise bestseller: No. 1 on the Fictionwise Dark Fantasy list in Feb. 2009
Kita Nekai, on the run and the smallest of her shifter clan-a calico cat among lions and tigers-is being hunted. She was expected to accept her role as her father's successor whether or not her cat was up to the task of leading the clan. She disagreed. Now she's less than a step ahead of the hunters, bone-tired, cold, and living hand-to-mouth in the city of Haven. And that's the high point of her day. She's also drugged, "accidently" turned into a vampire, and sentenced to death for recklessly creating a rogue shifter who tortures its human prey. She's got seventy-two hours to find the rogue, evade a city full of hunters, prove she's not responsible for the rogue, and keep the vampire council from killing her. All while sorting out an apprentice mage, a married ex-boyfriend shifter-hunter, and the vampire who made her.

Free Kindle Game? Maze-a-thon (of a sorts)
There is a very strange entry in the Kindle store this afternoon. Test release notes (Testing old pipeline with newPubs version set), by Anand Krish, is free in the Kindle store and the cover images is for Maze A Thon, which is currently 99 cents. There is no description and the other images are for a card game, but I downloaded it (hey, it's free!) to see what it is and it appears to be a fully functional copy of Maze A Thon. So, if you don't mind seeing a very odd title for the game, you can pick it up for free.I have to wonder what's going on at Amazon today, what with the earlier free game now missing entirely from the store and Accuweather was free for a short period (which I missed before it was pulled), now this entry. I hope they eventually figure out a way for us to see all the Kindle games at once, also, as they have now crossed the 100 line with Kindle Apps and Games, so the bestseller list can no longer be used to see which ones are new.
Book Description
Maze A Thon is a collection of different-sized puzzles with the goal of getting a mouse to his cheese.
There are three types of mazes to choose from: Classic, Wrap Around, and Cubetastic. In Classic, you go from point A to point B on one screen in a standard maze. In Wrap Around, use the keyboard to travel from one side of the maze off the screen to the opposite side. In Cubetastic, navigate through a rotating, six-sided maze.
Multiple levels of difficulty make Maze A Thon fun for kids and puzzle experts alike. You can play a quick, easy game, or spend hours finding your way out of intricate puzzles. And, every time you finish a maze, a new one is created from millions of possibilities, so you'll always get something different!
Simple yet addictive. Get ready to be a-mazed.

Reminder: The KSO deals on Swimwear and Strathwood furniture end tomorrow, see menu bar at the right for links to details
If you have your Kindle with Special Offers, be sure to wake it up and check the Special Offers page today. Today's deal, which you must sign up for by July 15, is a Kindle book for $1. This deal isn't quite as good as the $1 MP3 Album offer a while back, as you can only choose from roughly 4,000 books (see the list), rather than from the entire store. You can use the genre selectors on the side (click on "Kindle ebooks" first) to narrow down your choices, then sort by bestselling, price, etc., to help make you selection.
To take advantage of this offer:
To recap: you must claim the offer by July 15 and must do so from your Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers. You'll get a promotion code via email and you have until July 25 to enter and redeem the code. Once you enter it, it will work on the next book on the list that you purchase.

Save $10 on Sun Care Products (KSO)
This offer is for those with selected Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers or Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi with Special Offers only. Turn on your wireless, click Menu, Sync & Check for New Items, then on View Special Offers after the sync has completed. You should see this new offer:
Save $10 on $25 of eligible sun care products from Amazon.com
Click on the offer, then click on the link on the offer page sign up and get an email with the promotion code. Sign-up for this offer expires on July 15.
You'll get an email (right away), a link to the Special offer page and a promotion code to enter at checkout. Once you have the promotional code, you have until August 15 to complete your purchase. Like previous offers, this one requires you to use the full checkout process in order to enter your promotional code. Also, like all Amazon sales that use promotional codes, if you have a gift card balance, you must use it for the payment (if there is not a sufficient balance, then you can pick which credit card or other payment to use).
Once again, this offer can be used more than once per accounts, so long as you have more than one KSO registered. Just click on the ad on each device to receive the individual promotion codes via email.
The list of items that qualify on this deal isn't very long (34 total), but I already see several that we could use at this time of year. I don't think I've ever seen 85+ SPF spray on sunblock or 100+ SPF face sunblock in our local store, but there it is in the Amazon store. Even better, when I clicked on the individual product item, there is an additional 25% coupon code for select Neutrogena products (NTGSUNJL) and you can use both that coupon and the promotion code you receive on a single order. Remember, for the above promotion code, you only need to get to $25 in the cart, before any coupon code, so your savings should be more than $10 if you use this on Neutrogena products. If you prefer Banana Boat, I'd try to use the promotion code along with Subscribe & Save on Ultramist Sport With High Uva 3-pack, which is $25.09 before promotions, but an additional 15% off with S&S (note: I didn't try this combo to see if it would work, but since it usually shows as a promotional discount, the coupon code should work).

New Kindle Games: Flash Cards (for Kids)
Digi Ronin Games has released two new Kindle Apps in their Flash Cards for Kids series today. Both display pictures and then require a properly spelled name to be entered, so can be used both by kids learning to spell or those who are newly learning the English language (although the scope of the game is a bit limited). For kids, though, just seeing foods in their native state may be something they are not used to (in one school, most kids had never seen a potato in it's native state, let alone an eggplant, despite eating french fries on a regular basis).
Flash Cards: Animals for Kids ($1.99)
Flash Cards for Kids: Animals helps children learn to recognize 81 different animals while helping them with their alphabet and spelling skills.
Flash Cards: Foods for Kids ($1.99)
Flash Cards: Foods allows children to use flash cards to learn 76 new foods while reinforcing their alphabet and spelling skills.
Children can review words that are new to them, practice with multiple-choice options, or fill in answers directly. The title has two different play modes, each with three levels of difficulty. The first play mode shows a picture of a food and asks children to learn by typing the first letter of its name. The second play mode shows a picture of a food and asks children to spell out its entire name.
To give students timely feedback, correct answers are acknowledged and incorrect answers are corrected immediately upon submitting an answer. A high score table tracks the ten highest scores to help track progress and improvement.

New Kindle App - Password Manager
Password Manager ($4.99), by Mobigloo, is a new active content App in the Kindle store. Whether you are the type that uses only a couple of passwords (so you can remember them) or that uses many passwords, but write them down on sticky notes at your desk (then can't find the one you want), this app looks like just the thing to let you keep track of your accounts and passwords, while you only have to remember a single master password that only works on your physical Kindle. The only question I have is whether or not you can back up your password data, just in case your Kindle is broken (or stolen), so you can restore it to a new Kindle later on.App Description
Password Manager stores your confidential data such as user names, passwords, and account numbers so you can have one convenient place to go when you need to look up that information.
Password Manager can store up to 500 items, and includes templates for credit cards, bank accounts, PIN codes, frequent flyer numbers, web site log-ins, memberships and more. You retrieve your stored account information using a single master password.
Password Manager offers a random password feature that generates strong passwords that you can use with your individual accounts, and a password strength indicator to help you create a strong master password. To help protect your data, your data is stored with AES encryption, and a security timeout feature will automatically log you off after 2 minutes of inactivity.

Two Buck Books and a Free Song
China Grove, by The Doobie Brothers, is today's free song of the day at Amazon. I don't expect this one to be free for long, so try to grab it today, if you can (geo limited to the US, I believe). If you haven't opened your Cloud Player recently (or even if you did, the news is in tiny print), you might have missed a big change there - you now get unlimited space for music with any paid plan and with all the free credits that Amazon has thrown around lately, I suspect most of my readers have grabbed at least one of the under $1 albums in order to get that basic 20G plan for free for the first year. When the Cloud Player first started, one of the biggest problems that I had was that it didn't grandfather in the music you had already purchased from Amazon and if you uploaded it, it would quickly eat up the 5G basic plan space. With this update, if you maintain at least a 20G plan (plenty for my backups, at this point), then you also get an unlimited amount of space for your music. You do have to upload it (which can take days - I'm not sure how long mine will take), rather than them reading a signature from your MP3's and just updating the database, but once you do, you can treat the imported music just like the music you purchase from Amazon - it appears that what I've uploaded so far is being recognized by genre and album, just as if it had been purchased from Amazon since the Cloud Drive was introduced (and after two days of downloads, I am still in Classical, but haven't used any of my purchased space).
The Everything Mediterranean Diet Book ($1.99), by Connie Diekman and Sam Sotiropoulos, is published by Adams Media. Only one review so far and the text of it reads much better than the 3 star rating would imply. One of the co-authors, Sam Sotiropoulos, used to write a blog on Greek cooking, Greek Gourmand, if you want to browse some of his recipes (it hasn't been updated lately, though).Book Description
Did you know that eating nutrient-rich vegetables, healthful olive oils, and getting plenty of exercise can help you shed pounds and prevent diseases? It’s true! In The Everything Mediterranean Diet Book, veteran dietician Connie Diekman counsels you on how eating a diet direct from the Mediterranean—as well as getting plenty of exercise—will have you dropping a size (or two!) in no time! Not only will you learn how to adopt heart-healthy habits, you’ll also find the book packed with 100 delicious recipes such as:
- Chicken Tagine with Whole Wheat Couscous
- White Bean and Tomato Pizza
- Grilled Fennel Shrimp
- Pancetta with Peaches
- Hazelnut Ricotta Cake
Adams Media, in fact, has a number of books under two books (or slightly above), that are worth taking a look at. It appears that one one review for 501 Things to Do with a Zombie ($1.24) panned it, but these all appear to have good reviews (amongst others - click the publisher name to see the whole list):- Christmas Sucks ($1.27), by Joanne Kimes
- Everything is Better with a Gorilla ($2.74), by Andrew Gall and Vince Soliven (Illustrator)
- A Cup of Comfort for Couples ($2.16), by Sell Colleen
- Forbidden Knowledge - College ($1.92), by Michael Powell and Matt Forbeck
- The Naked Salesperson ($1.24), by Renee Walkup and Sandra McKee
A Perfect Wedding ($2.99), in the Titanic series by Alice Duncan (writing as Anne Robins), is the highest price title in this series published by Kensington at the momentBook Description
A NEW LIFE: Rescued from the doomed Titanic moments before its sinking, stewardess Marjorie MacTavish is determined to find happiness at last. The dear friends who stood by her on that fateful night have vowed to help her now, and Marjorie, ever hopeful, accompanies them to the bustling port of San Francisco to begin all over again, far from the gloomy slums of Glasgow. Anything is possible in America, it seems--especially romance . . .
A NEW LOVE: Dr. Jason Abernathy, dashing man about town, is beguiled by Marjorie's soft brogue and fresh charm. He has no way of knowing how much his gallantry delights her--or that his kindness to the less fortunate has already melted her heart. If the shy lass from Scotland would just say yes, he would consider himself the luckiest man on earth . . .
99 cent titles either in the series or by the same author include (see full list - most of her backlist is on sale):
- A Perfect Stranger
- A Perfect Romance
- Her Leading Man (The Dream Maker series)
The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place ($1.99), by Maryrose Wood and Jon Klassen (Illustrator), is a children's book for middle graders.Book Description
Found running wild in the forest of Ashton Place, the Incorrigibles are no ordinary children: Alexander, age ten or thereabouts, keeps his siblings in line with gentle nips; Cassiopeia, perhaps four or five, has a bark that is (usually) worse than her bite; and Beowulf, age somewhere-in-the-middle, is alarmingly adept at chasing squirrels.
Luckily, Miss Penelope Lumley is no ordinary governess. Only fifteen years old and a recent graduate of the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females, Penelope embraces the challenge of her new position. Though she is eager to instruct the children in Latin verbs and the proper use of globes, first she must help them overcome their canine tendencies.
But mysteries abound at Ashton Place: Who are these three wild creatures, and how did they come to live in the vast forests of the estate? Why does Old Timothy, the coachman, lurk around every corner? Will Penelope be able to teach the Incorrigibles table manners and socially useful phrases in time for Lady Constance's holiday ball? And what on earth is a schottische?
The Secret Zoo ($1.99), by Bryan Chick, is another children's book, but this one is aimed at the earlier grades (around third).Book Description
Something strange is happening at the Clarksville City Zoo. Late at night, monkeys are scaling the walls and searching the neighborhood—but what are they looking for?
Noah, his sister Megan, and their best friends, Richie and Ella, live next door to the zoo. Megan is the first to notice the puzzling behavior of some of the animals. One day Megan disappears, and her brother and their friends realize it's up to them to find her. Their only choice is to follow a series of clues and sneak into the zoo. But once inside, will they discover there's much more to the Clarksville City Zoo than they could ever have guessed?
Mysteries in Our National Parks: Wolf Stalker ($1.99), by AUTHOR, is part of the Mystery in Yellowstone National Park series for kids.Book Description
In this fast-paced adventure, the Landons trail a wounded wolf in Yellowstone National Park. The park is abuzz with rumors of a wolf attack. Meanwhile, a killer stalks the woods. Unaware of the danger, Jack and Ashley are more concerned about rebellious teenage foster child, Troy Haverson. From the opening moments at Old Faithful through 48 action-packed hours, the tension builds: What is lodged in the wolf's radio collar? And what is the meaning of the Native American story of Sin-a-Wavi? A heady mix of suspense, adventure, and moments of tenderness lure readers into this story of kids discovering the natural world. The book's afterword, by Yellowstone's Michael K. Phillips, explores the park's Wolf Restoration Program.
The Princess Diaries ($1.99), by Meg Cabot, is aimed the the teen to young adult market and is the first in the series.Book Description
What? A princess??
Me??? Yeah, right.
Mia Thermopolis is pretty sure there's nothing worse than being a five-foot-nine, flat-chested freshman, who also happens to be flunking Algebra.
Is she ever in for a surprise.
First Mom announces that she's dating Mia's Algebra teacher. Then Dad has to go and reveal that he is the crown prince of Genovia. And guess who still doesn't have a date for the Cultural Diversity Dance?
Boys, Bears, and A Serious Pair of Hiking Boots ($1.99), by Abby McDonald, is also a young adult title, but a bit more my style (I've worn out more than one pair of hiking boots, but worn not a single tiara).Book Description
Can a boy-hungry Jersey girl survive the wilds of Canada with her eco-identity intact? A witty new YA novel from the author of SOPHOMORE SWITCH.
Jenna may hail from the ’burbs of New Jersey, but Green Teen activism is her life. So when her mom suggests they spend the summer at Grandma’s Florida condo, Jenna pleads instead to visit her hippie godmother, Susie, up in rural Canada. Jenna is psyched at the chance to commune with this nature she’s heard about — and the cute, plaidwearing boys she’s certain must roam there. But after a few run-ins with local wildlife (from a larger-than-life moose to Susie’s sullen Goth stepdaughter to a hot but hostile boy named Reeve), Jenna gets the idea that her long-held ideals, like vegetarianism and conservation, don’t play so well with this population of real outdoorsmen. A dusty survival guide offers Jenna amusing tips on navigating the wilderness — but can she learn to navigate the turns of her heart?
Into the Wild ($1.99), is the first in the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. This one is again aimed at middle graders, but may be enjoyed by anyone who has shared their household with a cat (324 reviews and still a 5-star average).Book Description

In the midst of this turmoil appears an ordinary housecat named Rusty . . . Who may yet turn out to be the bravest warrior of them all.
The Trouble With Harry ($1.99), the third in the Noble series by Katie MacAlister, was originally published under the title Noble Pursuits. I haven't read the romance series books from this author, but have enjoyed the Aisling Grey, Guardian and Dragons series. Also in today's price range, she has the novella Bring Out Your Dead (Dark Ones Novels) ($0.99) and novel Suffragette in the City ($1.99).Book Description
Just What is the Trouble With Harry?
- He is Plum’s new husband. Not normally a problem, but when you consider that Harry advertised for a wife, and Plum was set to marry his secretary, there was cause for a bit of confusion.
- He has a title. Plum has spent the last twenty years hiding from the ton, and now Harry wants her to shine in society? Horrors!
- He doesn’t know about her shocking secret. How is she going to explain about the dead husband who isn’t a husband…and who now seems to be alive again?
- He’s fallen in love with her. And yet, the maddening man refuses to confide in her. For Plum knows the real trouble with Harry is that he’s stolen her heart.
Honeymoon For One ($0.99), by Beth Orsoff, is self-published, but marked down and looks interesting.Book Description
There are worse things in life than being dumped at the altar. Like being accused of killing your fake husband in a third world country where you can't speak the language, for example.
When Lizzie Mancini booked her honeymoon to the secluded Blue Bay Beach Resort on the small Caribbean island of Camus Caye she thought it would be relaxing to spend the week at an isolated couples-only retreat. But that was before she knew she’d be honeymooning sans groom. Touring alone, dining alone, and worst of all, having to explain to the resort’s thirty other guests why she was staying in the bridal suite alone—Lizzie was dreading it. But it still beat the alternative, eight more days hibernating in her empty apartment feeling sorry for herself.
Then Lizzie meets Michael, a gold-chained antiquities dealer who offers to play her husband for the week no strings (or sex) attached. The plan works perfectly until Lizzie spends the night with scuba instructor Jack, and Michael’s body washes up on Blue Bay’s pristine shore. Lizzie becomes Polizia Nationale’s number one suspect and the only way she can prove her innocence is to solve Michael’s murder herself.

Next, he decides to become the best 127-pound football player Trout High has ever seen; to give his close-minded civics teacher a daily migraine; and to help the local drunk clean up his act.
And then there's Dallas Suzuki. Amazingly perfect, fascinating Dallas Suzuki, who may or may not give Ben the time of day. Really, she's first on the list.

Relative Discomfort: The Family Survival Guide ($2.16), by Jeremy Greenberg, is just one of a dozen titles on sale from Andrews McMeel Publishing today (although a couple of the titles in the list are only on sale outside the US).Book Description
Seeing family is like catching a head cold: a temporary discomfort relieved by a snifter or four of brandy. --Jeremy Greenberg
Relative Discomfort is a sidesplitting, guffaw-inducing guide to living through and laughing at all of our family encounters. You know that knot you get in your stomach when you're about to come face-to-face with your Uncle Drunk and Aunt Enabler, or the brother-in-law who always wants to show you his gun collection? This book unties that knot.
If your family more closely resembles the Simpsons as opposed to the Tanner, Keaton, or Huxtable clans, then chances are this book is for you. International headlining comedian Jeremy Greenberg writes from the premise that although we love our families, many of us don't particularly love spending time with those who share our dysfunctional DNA.
To liven up the holidays, bar mitzvahs, funerals, and other family gatherings, Greenberg offers a collection of tips, tricks, games, and helpful hints that will not only help you survive your cousin's combination wedding/baby shower/high school graduation, but will also provide insights on how to move back into your parents' home when you're no longer a kid, or how to kick your adult-age son or daughter out of the family home if you're a parent.
Sections like Children During the Holidays (How to Have Fun at Their Expense) and Red- and Blue-Staters (What to Do When the Two Americas Show Up at the Same Family Reunion) provide a lighthearted look at surviving inner-family dynamics, along with a possible concrete solution or two. (Peanut butter-Valium cookies anyone?)
Other titles include (several at $1.24):
- Getting Old Sucks!... But It Beats the Alternative!: Coupons to Make Your Birthday Livelier, by Patrick Regan
- Do Good: 201 Ways to Lend a Hand, by Cindy Sacks and Marcy Silverman
- Little Snuggler: A Book of Sweet and Cheeky Nicknames for Your Baby, by Rob Mejia and Steven Walker
- Pasta Fazool for the Wiseguy's Soul: Heartwarming Stories of Family Life, by Brian M. Thomsen
Waterproof Bag for a Buck
The website Daily Steals has your choice of a Waterproof Ipad, Netbooks, eReaders Case Or Waterproof Cell Phone. Camera, MP3 Case for a $1 (plus S&H) today. Just the thing for taking out on a boat trip (or sealing up that ereader against sand and water, while you tote it around). I grabbed one a while back and they seem like a pretty good deal. From examining mine and the pic on today's deal, these seem to be somehing like the TrendyDigital WaterGuard Waterproof Case I see being sold at Amazon (their old design), for $15-$25, depending on the size. They don't lock down as tight as some of the $50 cases (that I'd recommend if you are kayaking down some rapids) and I wouldn't try to read underwater with one, but they should protect from rain showers in your pack or reading by the pool or on the beach. I also wouldn't leave anything out in direct sun in one of these cases, though, as it will act like a greenhouse and probably bake the electronics. The larger size will hold any of the ereaders comfortably or an iPad, while the smaller case really is only big enough for your cell phone (and/or wallet).

That does still leave cloth diapers (some look nothing like the diapers of old, as you can get micro-fiber fleece cloth diapers that are form fitted, with snaps and elastic to fit just like a disposable diaper), amongst other items. I don't know if washcloths are allowed, but there are a few there to search among, along with lotions and gift sets. All the bigger items (cribs, car seats, strollers, etc.) and toys should be included, as well.If you set a new Baby Registry with at least 10 items, you'll also get entered in the $500 Amazon Gift Certificate Sweepstakes.
Free Book (nook) - The Hunt
The Hunt ($6.39 Kindle), the first title in the Hunt Country series by Jan Neuharth, is this week's Free Friday book from Barnes and Noble.Book Description
Doug Cummings, an attractive, wealthy lawyer and expert horseman, is riding high at the top of his career. But things change when he becomes the target of a twisted but clever scheme to frame him for murder. When Doug's former lover and then his horse groom are killed, Doug becomes the prime suspect. With the media and local law enforcement breathing down his neck, Doug struggles to protect his loved ones and races to find the killer. But the evidence against Doug mounts until even his own attorney doesn't believe him.
Set in the historic and picturesque Virginia hunt country just outside Washington, "The Hunt" depicts the elite community of Middleburg and its close-kint, foxhunting crowd. Doug wonders whether the locals will band together to stand behind one of their own, or view him as an outcast, and he's stunned to discover where the lines of allegiance are drawn.
The book's compellingly crafted characters include Doug's beautiful but aloof female attorney, who is torn between her feelings for Doug and her uncertainty about his innocence; a spirited little girl whose special bond with Doug makes her the victim of a nightmarish kidnapping scheme; and a belligerent cop whose judgment is clouded by a lifetime of resentment towards the wealthy equestrian gentry.
As the plot twists and turns, "The Hunt" carries the reader on a gripping, fast-paced adventure packed with love, scandal, envy, and vengeance.

Refurbished Kindles back in stock at Amazon
I don't see any refurbished Kindles with Special Offers (yet), but if you are wanting to pick up a Kindle reader at a discount, there are three different refurbished models to choose from, at least, at the moment -- as you know if you've read here for long, these refurbished Kindles can appear and stay for several days or be gone within minutes. I've purchased one refurb in the past and I could not tell the difference between it and a brand new one of the same model that I had purchased earlier. They all come with the same 30-day, no questions asked return policy and have the same one-year warranty as a new Kindle. You should be able to buy an extended warranty on them from Amazon, but I'm not sure about from other vendors (I haven't bothered with an extended warranty on ours, but we always buy a cover and treat them a bit gently - those who toss them about naked or carry them in their hip pockets or have difficulty in holding items should definitely consider the extended warranty). From looking at the prices, which usually are considered to be very close to manufacturing costs on refurbs, it's clear that there still isn't a lot of room for the KSO's to drop in price (but, that can always change, as technology progresses).Four Free Books from Copia (EPUB)
There are four new free books from Copia today, all of which should be in EPUB format (you have to download first to your Copia reader app). All are classics, but I don't see a free version on Kindle (three have Rosetta Books editions). If you have any problems with the Buy Now button wanting payment, try adding all four to your cart, then using checkout from the cart - this seems to bypass that screen (and is what I had to do for three of the books; I am also having a problem downloading those three books, but am fairly certain that Copia will straighten it out soon and they are in my library until then).
The Borgias ($1.99 or more, various editions), by Alexandre Dumas (Copia link)
Book Description
CELEBRATED CRIMES Vol I, Part 1: The Borgias
There are dreadful -- perhaps scurrilous -- rumors about the Borgias of renaissance Italy, and here Dumas, author of such classics as THE THREE MUSKETEERS, in his Celebrated Crimes series, dishes up the dirt in all its ugly glory. This book was not written for children. Dumas has minced no words in describing the violent scenes of a violent time. In some instances facts appear distorted out of their true perspective, and in others the author makes unwarranted charges. The careful, mature reader -- for whom the books are intended -- will recognize and allow for this fact.
The House of Dr. Edwardes ($4.49), by Francis Beeding (Copia link)
Book Description
The basis for Hitchcock’s masterpiece Spellbound, Francis Beeding’s The House of Dr. Edwardes is a chilling mystery set in an asylum in France. A study of good and evil that owes some of its brooding, portentous atmosphere to the Gothic fiction of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Beeding’s novel is also a classic page-turner, a gripping work of suspense and intrigue.
Mute Witness ($7.19), by Robert L. Fish (Copia link)
Book Description
A slimy district attorney, an assortment of inept police officers, an underworld boss turned snitch, and the hardboiled lieutenant charged with protecting him until his trial make up the cast of characters of Robert Fish’s hair-raising 1963 novel Mute Witness. For Lieutenant Clancy of the New York Police Department, the assignment of protecting mobster Johnny Rossi soon turns into an investigation into who wants him dead and why. The inspiration for the Steve McQueen film, Bullitt, Mute Witness is a classic.
The Wheel Spins ($4.49), by Ethel White (Copia link)
Book Description
One of the Iris Carr's companions in coach, a sweet old woman, suddenly disappears on long train ride and none of the other passengers has ever even heard of her. Iris's increasingly desperate search uncovers a web of danger and intrigue. Basis of one of Hitchcock's most famous films, THE LADY VANISHES, (1938, England) with British cast headed by Michael Redgrave.

Will you stop writing about ...? (and some free music)
I've received a few emails lately and one recent comment asking if I was going to keep writing about a particular subject that the reader didn't find interesting or helpful. These have run the gamut from Kindle books to Kindle special offers to Games (including Kindle game or just games in general), but also there are the occasional complaints about the types of books (whether Christian Fiction, LGBT erotica or just romance in general and one recently political offering, although the first two are the most often commented upon). The answer, of course, is that yes, I'll just keep writing about what I find interesting. I try to highlight all the free books in the major (and some minor) ebookstores that are either under copyright (thus, are special deals from publishers) or backlist books from authors who are still writing. Some of these will have subject matter that doesn't appeal to everyone (or even to me, in some cases).
I stumble across free music or game deals now and then and I write about them because I find them interesting (and I know that some of you do, also). Audiobooks are "books" for some, so are included (even though I greatly prefer the printed word) and some movies might get mentioned (if there is a great deal on one that is also in print or just because Amazon wants to give us all some free credit to try out their store). A few of the deals won't be available to those outside the USA (this seems to be the case with Kindle games/apps and all the movie/tv/music downloads), while I also may mention sales or that are only applicable to those outside the US -- I have readers in several countries, with the US comprising the greatest portion, of course, but which includes Canada, Australia, India, the UK and more. Those outside the US do often see different prices (and miss out on the US deals), so the small portion of non-US deals that those in the US see seems like a fair trade-off.
I hate to lose readers because I mention subjects they don't find appealing, but if I stripped out everything that at least one person objected to, there would not be much left. Those with only a nook don't much care about the Kindle posts, while those with only a Kindle can't enjoy some of the DRM'd EPUBs that get mentioned (although both could read the other format on their PC's, I do understand not wanting to do so ... it's one reason I eventually caved in and bought a couple of EPUB based readers for our family).
In the end, though, I will write for myself and hope that those of you along for the ride find most of the content enjoyable. I can suggest that you consider using an RSS reader or follow on twitter, if you don't want to read directly on the website - both will let you see the post titles, so you can decide if the subject is interesting before you click thru to read the post. Twitter can even be configured to notify you via text message on you phone, every time a new post goes up and there are some RSS readers that will let you set up filters, if you want to strip out posts with certain tags or words in the subject. I always try to add appropriate tags/labels to every post and include a title that lets you know generally what a post is about: "KSO" for Kindle Special Offers, "Game" or "App" on the Kindle, Android or other games/apps, "Free Book" if that is what is contained (along with platform, at least at the point the post goes up, such as Kindle, nook, EPUB, noDRM, etc) or "Bargain" if I am writing about Kindle books.
Thanks for reading and here are some more free samplers at Amazon, to listen while you read (here or on your Kindle). I can guarantee that at least some of it I like and some I don't, but that least a few of you would have differing opinions on which was which!

Free Audiobooks - Where The Streets Had A Name and A Passage to India
Audiobook Sync's summer of free audiobooks continues. First, I've linked in the info from Amazon for each title (Amazon has the best reviews), then a link below to get your audio copies free. You can't get any titles that have been missed, but once they are loaded into Overdrive (which you will need to install, if you are not already using it for library books), they are yours to keep (there is no expiration date). The web site is running a bit slow this morning (at least, the script to give you the download link is), so be patient -- it will eventually get past the login portion and display a link.
Two new titles each Thursday, so be sure to check back next week.!
Where The Streets Had A Name ($12.23 paperback; $8.90 Kindle in Australia only; $77.95 Audio CD), by Randa Abdel-Fattah, read by Kellie Jones.
Book Description
Thirteen year old Hayaat is on a mission. She believes a handful of soil from her grandmother's ancestral home in Jerusalem will save her beloved Sitti Zeynab's life. The only problem is that Hayaat and her family live behind the impenetrable wall that divides the West Bank, and they're on the wrong side of check points, curfews, and the travel permit system. Plus, Hayaat's best friend Samy always manages to attract trouble. But luck is on the pair's side as they undertake the journey to Jerusalem from the Palestinian Territories when Hayaat and Samy have a curfew-free day to travel.
But while their journey may only be a few kilometers long, it could take a lifetime to complete. . . .
Humorous and heartfelt, WHERE THE STREETS HAD A NAME deals with the Israel-Palestinian conflict with sensitivity and grace and will open a window on this timely subject.
A Passage to India ($8.71 paperback; $0.00 Kindle; $26.30 Audible), by E. M. Forster, read by Sam Dastor.
Book Description
Among the greatest novels of the twentieth century and the basis for director David Lean’s Academy Award-winning film, A Passage to India tells of the clash of cultures in British India after the turn of the century. In exquisite prose, Forster reveals the menace that lurks just beneath the surface of ordinary life, as a common misunderstanding erupts into a devastating affair.
Eager to know the "real" India, a group of English tourists develops a friendship with the cultivated Dr. Aziz. The veneer of trust and mutual affection is shattered during a trip to the Marabar caves, when one of the women accuses Dr. Aziz of assault. Arguably Forster's greatest novel, A Passage to India paints a troubling portrait of colonialism at its worst and, in the breach between Aziz and his English "friends," foreshadows the end of British rule in India.
Click HERE to sign up for an account and get the free downloads. Don't forget, you'll also need to install the Overdrive software (there is a link at Sync). In addition, you end up clicking about three pages, for each book, before the audiobook actually downloads. Don't stop so long as you still see a button that talks about your Sync download (or until you see the Overdrive software open up). Once in Overdrive, you'll need to tell it where to save the files (just click OK to use the default location, since Overdrive will keep track of them for you), then again to actually start the download (by default, all parts of the book are downloaded; I would suggest not changing this in the last dialog box, just click on OK to get the download started).
