Sourcebooks Dollar Book Sale (Kindle)

Except for the first title in this post, these are all books published by Sourcebooks, that are currently on sale for a dollar or thereabouts. A few are US only, a few are UK only (available to UK residents in the US store, if your account hasn't moved, as well) and there seems to be a decent overlap where the books are available at a discount in both stores. For those of you in Canada, the US prices mostly hold (although the very last title is only on sale in Canada), but you also get a sale price ona few that are in the UK list. I'll post only the US price, except for the books (at the end) that are only on sale in the UK or Canada. A number of these have been free or sale priced in the past, which must explain why so many of them were already in my Kindle library.

A Modern Witch ($0.99 US/UK), by Debora Geary, is self-published, full-length novel and on sale for today only (at least, that's what the author has planned), as a Halloween special.
Book Description
Can you live 28 years without discovering you're a witch?

Lauren is downtown Chicago's youngest elite realtor. She's also a witch. She must be - the fetching spell for Witches' Chat isn't supposed to make mistakes. So says the woman who coded the spell, at least.

The tall, dark, and handsome guy sent to assess her is a witch too (and no, that doesn't end the way you might think). What he finds in Lauren will change lives, mess with a perfectly good career, and require lots of ice cream therapy.

A Modern Witch is light contemporary fantasy with a good dose of humor, a little romance, and characters you won't want to leave.

Wicked By Any Other Name ($0.99 US/UK), by Linda Wisdom, I just grabbed without sampling, as I have a few others from this author.
Book Description
Stasi Romanov uses just a little witch magic in her lingerie shop, running a brisk side business in love charms. A disgruntled customer threatening to sue over a failed love spell brings Trevor Barnes to town. Trevor's the best attorney around, and he just happens to be a wizard. Everyone knows that witches and wizards make a volatile combination—sure enough, the sparks fly and almost everyone's getting singed. Add to that Cupid playing a practical joke, a lunar eclipse that nearly precipitates a witch hunt, and some very mysterious goings on at the magical lake, and the feisty witch and gorgeous wizard have more than simply a possible lawsuit on their hands. Can they overcome their objections and settle out of court—and in the bedroom?

Emma and the Vampires (A Jane Austen Undead Novel) ($0.99 US/UK), by Wayne Josephson, is another entry into a pretty crowded genre, but has good reviews.
Book Description
What better place than pale England to hide a secret society of gentlemen vampires?

In this hilarious retelling of Jane Austen's Emma, screenwriter Wayne Josephson casts Mr. Knightley as one of the most handsome and noble of the gentlemen village vampires. Blithely unaware of their presence, Emma, who imagines she has a special gift for matchmaking, attempts to arrange the affairs of her social circle with delightfully disastrous results. But when her dear friend Harriet Smith declares her love for Mr. Knightley, Emma realizes she's the one who wants to stay up all night with him. Fortunately, Mr. Knightley has been hiding a secret deep within his unbeating heart-his (literal) undying love for her... A brilliant mash-up of Jane Austen and the undead.

I'm cheating a bit and going to list all "The Illustrated Edition" titles by Jane Austen together. They are all 89 cents in the US and just a bit over $1.10 for those in the UK. Amazingly, I have all but one of these in my library.
Sense and Sensibility (US/UK)
This special edition of Sense and Sensibility includes the famous illustrations by Charles Edmond Brock, created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Brock’s younger brother, Henry, also illustrated Austen’s books and joined him in illustrating other Austen releases for this set of 1898 editions.

Sense and Sensibility, first published in 1811, was Austen’s first published novel. The story revolves around the Misses Dashwood, Elinor and Marianne, left in reduced circumstances after their father’s death. Their new home is a cottage on a distant relative’s property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak.

Marianne meets the dashing John Willoughby who courts her with poetry and flowers. Meanwhile, staid, sober neighbor Colonel Brandon also falls in love with Marianne, but she makes her preference for his rival clear. Elinor is in love with the diffident Edward Ferrars, a young man of good breeding and high moral standing. Their sentiments are quite compatible but his ambitious sister Fanny has other plans for him and works to separate these kindred souls.

As true love finds its way to persevering over all obstacles, the impetuous sister gains maturity and balance and the cautious sister has her emotional awakening.

Pride and Prejudice (US/UK)
This special edition of Pride and Prejudice includes the famous illustrations by Henry Matthew Brock, originally created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Brock’s older brother Charles also illustrated other editions of Pride and Prejudice, and joined him in illustrating other Austen releases for this set of 1898 editions.

Pride and Prejudice was published anonymously in 1813. It was Jane Austen’s second novel and became her most popular. Considered by many to be the very first romance novel, the book features Elizabeth, an independent-minded heroine, and Darcy, a dark, brooding, rich, handsome hero. Jane Austen’s wit and insight into human nature are legendary and make Pride and Prejudice a book to be savored over and over again.

Pride and Prejudice is the deceptively simple story of Elizabeth Bennet, second eldest of five unmarried daughters of an affable country gentleman and a very silly lady whose mission in life is to marry them off. When a wealthy young man moves into the neighborhood, he brings with him his friend Mr. Darcy, who falls in love with Elizabeth - much to his own chagrin - after insulting her and earning the derision of the entire neighborhood. The necessity for both of them to overcome their pride and see each other for the people they really are is the backbone of an enduring comedy of manners and love story.

Persuasion (US/UK)
This special edition of Persuasion includes the famous illustrations by Charles Edmond Brock, created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Brock’s younger brother, Henry, also illustrated Austen’s books and joined him in illustrating other Austen releases for this set of 1898 editions.

Persuasion was Austen’s last completed novel, published in 1816 and featuring a heroine who has rejected her true love when her family and friends discourage the match. When he reappears eight years later, having made his fortune, Anne Elliott must now decide whether she is strong-willed enough to decide for herself where her own best interests lie.

Eight years after rejected suitor Frederick Wentworth goes off to sea, Sir Elliott’s extravagance has forced his family into reduced circumstances. His daughter, twenty-seven year old Anne, no longer expects to marry, and has fond memories and somewhat stinging regrets about her decision to turn Frederick down at the urging of her family, who wanted her to aim higher. When Wentworth returns, having made his fortune, Anne is given a second chance at love, but she must be strong enough to think and decide for herself, then find a way to win him back.

Northanger Abbey (US/UK)
This special edition of Northanger Abbey includes the famous illustrations by Henry Matthew Brock, originally created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Brock’s older brother Charles joined him in illustrating other Jane Austen releases for this set of 1898 editions.

Northanger Abbey was Austen's first completed novel but was published posthumously in 1817. Austen sold the novel to a bookseller in 1803 - for £10 - who decided not to publish it. Her brother bought it back for the same amount after her death.

Catherine Morland is the daughter of a country clergyman, one of ten children. She devours Gothic novels and has an active imagination. After a lively season in Bath, she is invited to Northanger Abbey, where she finds the house is not the dark, moody Gothic mansion of her imaginings.

Catherine’s exciting season in Bath leads her to become acquainted with the dashing John Thorpe, who encourages her flights of fancy and attempts to divert her from his rival Henry Tilney. But Henry extends an invitation she can’t resist and she finds herself visiting Northanger Abbey. There, as a “heroine in training,” she is determined to bring one of her favorite Gothic novels to life, but the charming and very down to earth Mr. Tilney eventually brings her to see that real life can be even more interesting than the most spine-chilling Gothic fantasy.

Mansfield Park (US/UK)
This special edition of Mansfield Park includes the famous illustrations by Henry Matthew Brock, originally created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Brock’s older brother Charles joined him in illustrating other Jane Austen releases for this set of 1898 editions.

Mansfield Park is Jane Austen's version of a Cinderella story. Fanny Price is a poor relation living with her rich uncle and aunt, Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, and their children. Edmund, the second son, is the only one who treats her with kindness and they develop a strong bond, until the dashing Henry Crawford and his lovely sister Mary come to visit. The Crawfords are outwardly charming, but their indifferent upbringing leaves them unable to distinguish right from wrong, and Fanny must watch her beloved Edmund almost fall into Mary’s trap.

Fanny Price is meek and mild, and unfailingly good. When the Crawfords introduce risky activities into her social set, she tries to prevent disaster, but the production of a play leads all the members of the family astray and Edmund almost falls irretrievably in love with the beautiful Mary. Fanny watches with trepidation and much pain, until Edmund’s own high sense of morality brings him to the right conclusions about which is the better woman, on the inside.

Emma (US/UK)
This special edition of Emma includes the famous illustrations by Charles Edmond Brock, created in 1898. Brock and his brothers were all successful illustrators of the day and often posed for each other using costumes, props and furniture in their Cambridge studio. Brock’s younger brother, Henry, also illustrated Austen’s books and joined him in illustrating other Austen releases for this set of 1898 editions.

In conceiving Emma Woodhouse, Jane Austen set out to create a heroine “whom no-one but myself will much like.” A naive and spoiled young lady, she is at the pinnacle of local society and lives with her doddering father. Her neighbor Mr. Knightley is the hero of the tale. Ten years her senior, he sees Emma’s faults, and delights in pointing them out to her.

Emma, as an heiress, has no need to marry, but she feels strongly that her less fortunate friends must certainly do so, and she is tireless in promoting the best interests of those she holds dear. Her first project is her new friend Harriet Smith, a young lady of unknown parentage, but sweet disposition. After thoroughly disrupting a match between Harriet and a handsome young local farmer, Emma pushes Harriet to aim for the vicar, who himself has his eye on Emma. By the time that misunderstanding is untangled, Emma has Mr. Knightley thoroughly disapproving of her. Against the backdrop of Highbury society, Emma is a charming tale of a young woman coming of age, learning to mind her own business, and discovering her own heart resides with the strong, steadfast gentleman next door.

Buy one of 100 Horror titles for $1

To take advantage of this offer:
  1. First, turn on your Kindle with Special Offers, click Menu, then View Special Offers.
  2. Find the offer: Buy one of 100 Horror titles for $1. Click on it, then on the link to Email Me This Offer.
  3. You will get an email from Amazon with your promotional code, right away.
  4. Once you have the promotion code (and have selected your book; see below), click this link, then on the button labeled Enter Your Code, at any time up to the expiration date of November 30.
  5. Enter your code and follow the directions.
  6. Choose any of these books and you'll pay only $1.
You'll have a promotion code on your account that will apply to the FIRST book you buy (from the list) after that. Note that even if the book is free, you'll pay a dollar, so be careful which one you pick after you enter the code -- make sure you don't grabbing a low cost title by accident, which can happen if you apply the code right away, before you are ready to buy the book (current prices range from just above $3 to $10.00, although I did see one in the $13-14 range). You should save the code and not enter it until you are ready to buy a book.

To recap: you must claim the offer by October 31 and must do so from your Kindle with Special Offers. You'll get a promotion code via email and you have until November 30 to enter and redeem the code. Once you enter it, it will work on the next book on the list that you purchase.

Limited to one per customer and one per device.

There are already a number of books that are supposed to be on this offer that are not available to those in the US. Strange, since Amazon set up the list and the offer is limited to those in the US. For a few books, there are other editions available in the US, but I would not count on the code working if you try it on those. I've seen this before, when publishers yank their books from the Kindle store, after they are featured in a promotion, but never so many when a promotion starts. If you see one you want and it is "not available", send an email to Kindle support (not Amazon) and complain that the offer is for US only and they picked a non-US ASIN/publisher (and give them the correct ASIN). Odds are, even if they can't fix the offer page, you'll get someone in support that can give you a promotion to get that book under the same terms as this deal. If you read horror at all, though, you should be able to find something interesting, such as Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby; I have a review copy and recommend those that thought it was only a movie take a look. So far, I've found one book I purchased on another $1 deal (Neal Stephenson's Zodiac), a couple of books I've picked up free on other promotions and what may be the most popular title in my library (Kalayna Price's Once Bitten; I have the same title by three other well-known authors, in addition to this one).

Save 50% on Kindle / Kindle Keyboard Covers (KSO)

Update: Some customers are getting an offer on Kindle covers, rather than Kindle Keyboard covers, so I am updating to show the links for both offers. Which you actually have, though, doesn't seem to make much difference on which offer you get, as I received on the KK offer on two accounts, one of which has the newer Kindle registered (only).

This offer is only for those with a Kindle with Special Offers (including the brand new $79 Kindle).

Save 50% on select Kindle Keyboard covers at Amazon.com or
Save 50% on select Kindle covers at Amazon.com

Click on offer, then click on the link on the offer page to receive an email with the promotion code. Sign-up for this offer expires on October 31.

You'll get an email (right away), a link to the Kindle Keyboard Special Offer or the Kindle Special Offer page and a promotion code to enter at checkout. Once you have the promotional code, you have until November 30 to complete your purchase (but, see below). Like previous offers, this one requires you to use the full checkout process in order to enter your promotional code. Also, like all Amazon sales that use promotional codes, if you have a gift card balance, you must use it for the payment (if there is not a sufficient balance, then you can pick which credit card or other payment to use).

Limit one offer per customer and per device.

This is an offer that has occurred once before and is one that been asked for several times over in the Amazon forums. I'll admit that I'd rather it have included covers for the new Touch or MiniKindle, but for those that are getting a new Kindle Keyboard (which I prefer greatly over the MiniKindle for entering notes or using on the web and is necessary for some games), this is a good chance to grab a new cover in time for holiday gift giving. Also, unlike the last offer, this one includes the lighted covers. Best of all, the covers are also on sale, which means you can pick up a lighted cover for less than the unlighted covers are selling for (without the code) or an unlighted cover for under $15.

If you get the Kindle Keyboard cover offer, the covers are all from Amazon. But, if you get the Kindle cover offer, there are covers from Marware, the New York Times and Belkin, which means there is a wide range of styles, colors and prices available to choose from. I've already emailed customer support, to find out why hubby didn't get the Kindle cover offer (and asking that he be allowed to use his code there, instead). The deals may not be quite as big a savings, but that's the only Kindle here that really needs a cover, right now. That list of covers, btw, also includes some that work with the new Kindle Touch. The dates are the same as the other offer, so it isn't one intended to occur later, but should have been the one that those with a Kindle (no keyboard) received.

Moving from the back rooms of the Capitol to secret chambers at Langley, from arms dealers' conventions to the Khyber Pass, Charlie Wilson's War presents an astonishing chapter of our recent past, and the key to understanding what helped trigger the sudden collapse of the Soviet Union and ultimately led to the emergence of a brand-new foe in the form of radical Islam.

($4.76), all by Bethany Roberts and Doug Cushman (Illustrator), are three children's books for the season, all on sale by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. If you have kids in the right age range and either an iPad (or other tablet), netbook or (perhaps) a Kindle Fire on order, these should look great and be readable even in a darkened bedroom. Halloween Mice!
Mice whirling in the moonlight, having a party on Halloween night, are threatened by an approaching cat until they come up with an ingenious trick to scare him off.

Thanksgiving Mice!
It’s Thanksgiving and four adorable mice are putting on a play for their woodland friends in this delightful read-aloud, the fourth book about the holiday mice. Lively verse introduces beginning readers to basic words and rhyming sounds and tells the story of the very first Thanksgiving, when the Pilgrim mice traveled across the sea and settled in America. The simple story-within-a-story format, accompanied by colorful, action-filled illustrations of mice in costume, also serves as a basic introduction to theater.

Christmas Mice!
The holiday mice are back! It’s Christmas time and the four cheerful mice merrily hang stockings, string popcorn, wrap presents, and sing carols. The little mice are so caught up in their joyful preparations that they almost forget to look out for their old enemy, the cat. Happily, their Christmas spirit is so infectious that even the cat is not immune. Simple, lively verse and colorful, action-filled illustrations convey the all anticipation and goodwill that come with the Yuletide season in this delightful read-aloud.

Scott Nicholson has teamed up with and Sergio Castro and Lee Davis (Illustrators) over at Haunted Computer Books and have a trio of children's books at $2.99, all perfect to read to your kids over the next few nights.
Too Many Witches
When Moanica Moonsweep plans a special Halloween party, her witch's brew has to be just right. So she invites her witchy friends over to help her plan the perfect kettle of gruesome stew. But when they can't agree on the nastiest ingredients, they end up with a very messy situation. A bedtime, read-aloud story for ages 5 through 8, teaching all little witches how to work together to solve a problem.

Duncan the Punkin
A magical bedtime story for all ages.

Halloween is coming, and Duncan the Punkin's mom teaches him to hide in the pumpkin patch so he doesn't get turned into a jack-o-lantern. Being good is boring, and Duncan's not afraid of any old farmer. But someone else has been keeping an eye on the pumpkin patch. Skeerdy-Cat-Crow has been hanging on a pole all summer, and now he's hungry. He's heard nice little pumpkins are just right. But Mom knows a trick that will teach both Skeerdy-Cat-Crow and Duncan something new.

Free Book (nook) - The Habitation of the Blessed

The Habitation of the Blessed ($7.99 Kindle), the first title in the Prester John series by Catherynne M. Valente, is this week's Free Friday book at Barnes & Noble. This one is from Night Shade Books, which means if it ends up free at Amazon, it may be a few days, if it does at all (although I do believe that reporting the lower price in large numbers does spur Amazon to drop the price early).
Book Description
This is the story of a place that never was: the kingdom of Prester John, the utopia described by an anonymous, twelfth-century document which captured the imagination of the medieval world and drove hundreds of lost souls to seek out its secrets, inspiring explorers, missionaries, and kings for centuries. But what if it were all true? What if there was such a place, and a poor, broken priest once stumbled past its borders, discovering, not a Christian paradise, but a country where everything is possible, immortality is easily had, and the Western world is nothing but a dim and distant dream?

Brother Hiob of Luzerne, on missionary work in the Himalayan wilderness on the eve of the eighteenth century, discovers a village guarding a miraculous tree whose branches sprout books instead of fruit. These strange books chronicle the history of the kingdom of Prester John, and Hiob becomes obsessed with the tales they tell. The Habitation of the Blessed recounts the fragmented narratives found within these living volumes, revealing the life of a priest named John, and his rise to power in this country of impossible richness. John's tale weaves together with the confessions of his wife Hagia, a blemmye--a headless creature who carried her face on her chest--as well as the tender, jeweled nursery stories of Imtithal, nanny to the royal family.

Hugo and World Fantasy award nominee Catherynne M. Valente reimagines the legends of Prester John in this stunning tour de force.

Bargain Book Roundup

Just a quick follow-up on The Dead Man series by Lee Goldberg and and William Rabkin: I've finished the first title (Face Of Evil) and definitely recommend this series, from what I've read so far. The length reminds me of novels of years ago - you know, the ones you could stash in your back pocket, not the ones that required a forklift to carry around. The prose is quite descriptive; in fact, almost too much so, in some scenes, as Matt starts to experience his new "powers" after his miraculous recovery. In some ways, the first title is a setup for the series (which will not only definitely include 12 titles to start, but may end up with 12 more, if Amazon continues to pick up their contract -- that's what happens, it seems, when you let a Hollywood TV writer direct a book series), but it is also self-contained; there is no cliff-hanger ending, as happens with so many series, but you can see that there are story line areas to be explored that makes me want to read the next one. With any luck, the rest of the series will be one sale at some point, but even at the $2.99 most of Mr. Goldberg's titles sell for, the series will be a good value for the money. Read the sample, definitely, and consider ordering the first six while you can get the entire bunch for less than the cost of most single novels. So far, I'd classify this series as more Paranormal Thriller or even Urban Fantasy, rather than Horror, despite the rather graphic descriptions of Matt's visions.

He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not ($0.99), by Lena Diaz, is another of the books that were mistakenly free for Australians to pre-order. It's now been released and those of us in the US can get it at a bargain price. It's a full-length novel, too, at 368 pages in print.

Decision at Sea : Five Naval Battles that Shaped American History ($1.99), by Craig L. Symonds, a leading Civil War and naval historian who was Professor of History at the United States Naval Academy for three decades.
Book Description
From thunderous broadsides traded between wooden sailing ships on Lake Erie, to the carrier battles of World War II, to the devastating high-tech action in the Persian Gulf, here is a gripping history of five key battles that defined the evolution of naval warfare--and the course of the American nation. Acclaimed military historian Craig Symonds offers spellbinding narratives of crucial engagements, showing how each battle reveals the transformation of technology and weaponry from one war to the next; how these in turn transformed naval combat; and how each event marked a milestone in American history.
  • Oliver Hazard Perry's heroic victory at Lake Erie, one of the last great battles of the Age of Sail, which secured the Northwestern frontier for the United States
  • The brutal Civil War duel between the ironclads Monitor and Virginia, which sounded the death knell for wooden-hulled warships and doomed the Confederacy's hope of besting the Union navy
  • Commodore Dewey's stunning triumph at Manila Bay in 1898, where the U.S. displayed its "new navy" of steel-hulled ships firing explosive shells and wrested an empire from a fading European power
  • The hairsbreadth American victory at Midway, where aircraft carriers launched planes against enemies 200 miles away--and where the tide of World War II turned in the space of a few furious minutes
  • Operation Praying Mantis in the Persian Gulf, where computers, ship-fired missiles, and "smart bombs" not only changed the nature of warfare at sea, but also marked a new era, and a new responsibility, for the United States.
Symonds records these encounters in detail so vivid that readers can hear the wind in the rigging and feel the pounding of the guns. Yet he places every battle in a wide perspective, revealing their significance to America's development as it grew from a new Republic on the edge of a threatening frontier to a global superpower. Decision at Sea is a powerful and illuminating look at pivotal moments in the history of the Navy and of the United States. It is also a compelling study of the unchanging demands of leadership at sea, where commanders must make rapid decisions in the heat of battle with lives--and the fate of nations--hanging in the balance.

Can God Be Trusted?: Faith and the Challenge of Evil ($1.90), by John G. Stackhouse Jr.
Book Description
In a world riddled with disappointment, malice, and tragedy, what rationale do we have for believing in a benevolent God? If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why is there so much evil in the world? John Stackhouse takes a historically informed approach to this dilemma, examining what philosophers and theologians have said on the subject and offering reassuring answers for thoughtful readers.

Stackhouse explores how great thinkers have grappled with the problem of evil--from the Buddha, Confucius, Augustine, and David Hume to Martin Luther, C. S. Lewis, and Alvin Plantinga. Without brushing aside the serious contradictions posed by a God who allows incurable diseases, natural disasters, and senseless crimes to bring misery into our lives, Stackhouse asks if a world completely without evil is what we truly want. Would a life without suffering be a meaningful life? Could free will exist if we were able to choose only good? Stackhouse examines what the best minds have had to say on these questions and boldly affirms that the benefits of evil, in fact, outweigh the costs. Finally, he points to Christian revelation--which promises the transformation of suffering into joy--as the best guide to God's dealings with the world.

Copperheads : The Rise and Fall of Lincoln's Opponents in the North ($1.99), by James M. McPherson and Jennifer L. Weber
Book Description
If Civil War battlefields saw vast carnage, the Northern home-front was itself far from tranquil. Fierce political debates set communities on edge, spurred secret plots against the Union, and triggered widespread violence, such as the New York City draft riots. And at the heart of all this turmoil stood Northern anti-war Democrats, nicknamed "Copperheads."

Now, Jennifer L. Weber offers the first full-length portrait of this powerful faction to appear in almost half a century. Weber reveals how the Copperheads came perilously close to defeating Lincoln and ending the war in the South's favor. Indeed, by the summer of 1864, they had grown so strong that Lincoln himself thought his defeat was "exceedingly likely." Passionate defenders of civil liberties and states' rights--and often virulent racists--the Copperheads deplored Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus, his liberal interpretation of the Constitution, and, most vehemently, his moves toward emancipation. Weber reveals how the battle over these issues grew so heated, particularly in the Midwest, that Northerners feared their neighbors would destroy their livestock, burn their homes, even kill them. Indeed, some Copperheads went so far as to conspire with Confederate forces and plan armed insurrections, including an attempt to launch an uprising during the Democratic convention in Chicago. Finally, Weber illuminates the role of Union soldiers, who, furious at Copperhead attacks on the war effort, moved firmly behind Lincoln. The soldiers' support for the embattled president kept him alive politically in his darkest times, and their victories on the battlefield secured his re-election.

Disgraced after the war, the Copperheads melted into the shadows of history. Here, Jennifer L. Weber illuminates their dramatic story. Packed with sharp observation and fresh interpretations, Copperheads is a gripping account of the fierce dissent that Lincoln called "the fire in the rear."

Breast Cancer (Facts) ($1.71), by Christobel Saunders and Sunil Jassal
Book Description
Breast Cancer: The Facts is a concise and accessible guide to breast cancer for patients and their families, general health practitioners, nurses and medical and allied health students.

For those newly diagnosed with breast cancer, this book will provide essential background information on the disease and will assist them in negotiating the often convoluted and obscure path through treatment. With this knowledge, people affected by breast cancer, and their families, will be able to ask health care teams the questions in order to make informed decisions about treatment.

This publication covers all aspects of the diagnosis and management of breast cancer, focusing on the patient journey, but also includes information on women at high risk, menopause and fertility after treatment, breast cancer associated with pregnancy, the role of clinical research, and the psychosocial aspects of diagnosis and survivorship.
The clear layout of the book enables readers to focus on chapters or topic areas relevant to their specific concerns. The authors have also provided the details of additional resources which can further inform the reader.

Although written by two specialists in breast cancer, the focus on the whole patient, their family and social networks, and the role of other professionals such as the general practitioner, transforms the book from a textbook on breast cancer to a holistic guide to better health at and after diagnosis with the disease.

Seven Against Thebes (Greek Tragedy in New Translations) ($1.42), by Aeschylus, Helen H. Bacon and Anthony Hecht (Translators), and The Karamazov Brothers ($0.99), by Fyodor Dostoevsky and Ignat Avsey (Translator), are just two of the many classics that the Oxford University Press has released in the Kindle store, many with new translations. If you are looking for a little bit nicer version of a classic, a better translation (read the comments for Avsey vs. Garnett, for example) or need an ebook where the pages correspond to the print edition, be sure to check these out. Many seem to be heavily discounted at Amazon, currently (I saw several digital list prices over $10 on these). Keep in mind when looking at the comments, they apply to all editions of a book, so a Kindle specific comment may apply to any of several editions for many of these.
Seven Against Thebes
The formidable talents of Anthony Hecht, one of the most gifted of contemporary American poets, and Helen Bacon, a classical scholar, are here brought to bear on this vibrant translation of Aeschylus' much underrated tragedy The Seven Against Thebes. The third and only remaining play in a trilogy dealing with related events, The Seven Against Thebes tells the story of the Argive attempt to claim the Kingdom of Thebes, and of the deaths of the brothers Eteocles and Polyneices, each by the others hand. Long dismissed by critics as ritualistic and lacking in dramatic tension, Seven Against Thebes is revealed by Hecht and Bacon as a work of great unity and drama, one exceptionally rich in symbolism and imagery.

The Karamazov Brothers
Dostoevsky's last and greatest novel, The Karamazov Brothers (1880) is both a brilliantly told crime story and a passionate philosophical debate. The dissolute landowner Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov is murdered; his sons--the atheist intellectual Ivan, the hot-blooded Dmitry, and the saintly novice Alyosha--are all involved at some level. Brilliantly bound up with this psychological drama is Dostoevsky's intense and disturbing exploration of many deeply felt ideas about the existence of God, freedom of will, the collective nature of guilt, and the disastrous consequences of rationalism. Filled with eloquent voices, this new translation fully realizes the power and dramatic virtuosity of Dostoevsky's most brilliant work.

In the Heat of the Night (A Virgil Tibbs Mystery) ($4.49), by John Ball
Book Description
Winner of an Edgar Award and recently named one of the top one hundred mystery novels of the century, John Dudley Ball's classic In the Heat of the Night tells the story of Virgil Tibbs, a black detective tracking a murderer in a small Southern town. The novel inspired both the 1967 film starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger and the television series starring Carroll O'Connor and continues to delight readers with its gripping narrative and honest look at race relations during the Civil Rights Era.

Plain Fear: Forsaken ($2.99), by Leanna Ellis, is an Amish Vampire story. I don't know how good or bad it is, but it was supposed to be on the Halloween table at our local bookstore -- they double checked the list and yes, that Amish lady belonged with the other spooky covers -- but, they had complaints (presumably from locals of the Amish faith) and had to hide it back over on the shelves (I wonder it went to religion or fantasy?). In any case, you can check out what caused the controversy at a discount price on Kindle.
Book Description
"Not Death, But Love."
Pain choked off anymore words. She grabbed the cold stone marker for support, splayed her hands across its front as a sob wrenched free from her chest.
Although she knows that the Amish way is to move on from grief, on to a new season, Hannah cannot move on from Jacob, who was taken too soon.
Jacob's brother Levi also cannot move on-his love for Hannah burns just as strong as ever. But he knows how much Hannah loved his brother, and the event that took Jacob from them.
And it's a secret he must take to his grave.
So when a mysterious stranger comes to their community, he too carries a secret; one that will force Hannah to choose between light and dark, between the one she wants to love and a new yearning she fears to embrace.

The Irish Americans: A History ($3.99), by Jay P Dolan
Book Description
Jay Dolan of Notre Dame University is one of America's most acclaimed scholars of immigration and ethnic history. In THE IRISH AMERICANS, he caps his decades of writing and teaching with this magisterial history of the Irish experience in the United States. Although more than 30 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, no other general account of Irish American history has been published since the 1960s. Dolan draws on his own original research and much other recent scholarship to weave an insightful, colorful narrative. He follows the Irish from their first arrival in the American colonies through the bleak days of the potato famine that brought millions of starving immigrants; the trials of ethnic prejudice and "No Irish Need Apply;" the rise of Irish political power and the heyday of Tammany politics; to the election of John F. Kennedy as president, a moment of triumph when an Irish American ascended to the highest office in the land.

Dolan evokes the ghastly ships crowded with men and women fleeing the potato blight; the vibrant life of Catholic parishes in cities like New York and Chicago; the world of machine politics, where ward bosses often held court in the local saloon. Rich in colorful detail, balanced in judgment, and the most comprehensive work of its kind yet published, THE AMERICAN IRISH is a lasting achievement by a master historian that will become a must-have volume for any American with an interest in the Irish-American heritage.

Russell Blake's self-published Zero Sum series seems to be racking up the good reviews. You can get the first title, Kotov Syndrome, for free and the Book 2 & Book 3 bundle for $3.99. For the writers out there, you might also want to peruse his (unrelated) parody How To Sell A Gazillion eBooks In No Time (Even if Drunk, High or Incarcerated).
Book Description

Dead Witch Walking ($7.99 US; £0.99/$1.61 UK), the first title in the Rachel Morgan series by Kim Harrison, is definitely on my recommended list. Unfortunately, this great price is only for those in the UK; for those that can take advantage of it, I'd snap it up. You may also want to grab A Fistful of Charms (US/UK)and For A Few Demons More (US/UK), while they are £3.99.

Family Meals: Coming Together to Care for an Aging Parent ($5.07), by Michael Tucker
Book Description
Michael Tucker and his wife, Jill Eikenberry, are enjoying the early years of retirement in their dream house, a beautiful 350-year-old stone farmhouse in the central Italian province of Umbria, when life rears its ugly head on their summer plans. Jill’s mother’s second husband, Ralph, has passed away, and Michael and Jill must leave the respite of the Italian countryside and travel westward to console Lora, Jill’s mother, and help her plan her future. Thus begins Family Meals, a beautifully told memoir that explores the meaning of family and examines the sacrifices we make for those we love. After Ralph’s death, Lora begins a rapid decline into dementia, and Jill wrestles with the decision to move her from Santa Barbara to New York City. The Tuckers initially attempt to place Lora in a senior residence in New York, but when an apartment becomes vacant right across the hall from them, they grab it for Lora. Michael and Jill’s children, Alison and Max—much to their parents’ happiness—decide not only to relocate to Manhattan but also move in together. Their family, which had been a loose network of individual strands, has become, remarkably, a unit. It’s all very Italian.

Free Book (nook) - The Big 5-OH!

The Big 5-OH!, by Sandra D. Bricker, was free earlier this month, went back up in price and is now free again at Barnes & Noble, courtesy of Christian publisher Abingdon Press. I don't know if the other stores will follow suit, but if those with a nook missed it, now is the time to act.
Book Description
Olivia Wallace has a birthday curse . . . or so she thinks. It was a broken heart on her 16th, a car accident on her 21st, pneumonia on her 30th, and a fall down a flight of stairs on her 35th. There were Ohio blizzards on her 38th, 39th, and 40th; and six days before her 45th, she lost the love of her life to a heart attack. Numbing grief stole that birthday and a couple more to follow and, on the morning of her 48th birthday, she received the call she’d dreaded ever since losing her mom so many years ago…she was diagnosed with stage-3 ovarian cancer. The doctors didn’t hold out a lot of hope, but Liv survived and maintained her faith. Months of surgeries and chemotherapy and radiation treatments followed.

But now, as her 50th birthday creeps up the icy Ohio path toward her, her hair has grown back, her energy level is up, and she is officially cancer free. It makes her nervous. After everything she’s gone through, Liv hates the idea of driving on icy roads and returning to work as an O.R. nurse in a local Cincinnati hospital.

Her best friend Hallie knows just the thing to break Liv out of the winter doldrums, while providing a safe haven of warmth, sunshine, and a time to regroup: a holiday in the Florida sunshine!

How to get started with Android Apps at Amazon

In order to buy any Android Apps at Amazon, you must have at least one Andriod device registered with Amazon. The only way to do this (that I can find), is to install the Amazon Appstore app onto an Android phone or tablet and then log into your Amazon account on the device.

Once you have done this, you can buy apps and leave them in your library (you don't have to install them). If you don't have a device, you can borrow one from a friend or even use one on display in a store (I found this out while testing tablets at Best Buy, were I bought the Asus Transformer (that I am, painfully, trying to use to write this post).

These are the general steps involved:

[A] On a tablet that doesn't have the Appstore installed:

1. Go to the Amazon Android Apps and Devices page and send yourself an email, where it says "Add a device". Use an account that you can log in on the web, preferable gmail.

2. Use the Settings app on the device to allow installation of apps from outside the Android Market. On this tablet, you open Settings, choose Applications and check the box next to Unknown sources.

3. Open the email from Amazon and click the link to download the Appstore app. When it has downloaded, click on it to open/install.

[B] On a device/tablet that has the Appstore installed:

1. If borrowing a tablet with the app installed, you need to have the friend de-register the app (go into Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, find Appstore and select Clear Data). This doesn't remove the device from his account (so, he can still buy apps) and you'll do this same step later on (which leaves a device registered to your account, but prevents anyone from using the device to purchase apps using your Amazon account).

Once you completed either [A] or [B], run the Appstore app and log in. You can then go to any Android app page using the Android device or your computer (or the iPad) and click to buy an app. It is not automatically installed, but just added to your library.

When you are done shopping from the device, be sure to use the steps in [B-1] above to remove your login information from the device (but leave the device registered to your account, so you can get new apps using the website). If you "borrowed" a device at a store, it's a good ideao to also remove the Appstore app when you are done (same place as [B][1], but choose Uninstall after you do Clear Data).

No pics this time (and if I missed any spelling, I'm blaming the tablet's keyboard, which keeps moving the cursor on me).

ETA: OK, I tried out VirtualBox, which you can install on most computers and laptops: there is an installer for Windows, OS X, Linux and Solaris. If you are a techie, it's not too bad an install -- use the directions I found, install the ISO you are instructed to download onto the virtual hard drive (when you run off the image, choose to install to the hard drive, then skip down a ways in the directions), making sure to create a fake SD card, as the Amazon download requires one. Once it is set up, use the Settings tab to change the boot order, so the Hard Drive is first, the start up the VM.

Click thru any messages, until you see a green lock icon. On the Machine Menu, choose Disable Mouse Integration. Then, click inside the VM and OK a the message that displays. Click and drag the green lock upwards, to unlock the desktop.

Click the menu on the right to see your apps, scroll down to Settings, then Applications and check the box to allow Unknown sources. Press escape a few times, then open the Browser and go to https://www.amazon.com/app-email (or open your email client in the browser and click the link from Amazon). The app installer will download automatically (provided you created an SD card); run it by clicking and dragging on the menu bar at the top. Install the app, open it and log in to Amazon. Once you've managed to get thru the setup, though, you can then buy apps from the Amazon web page and don't have to mess with the Virtual Box program any longer.

There is no doubt a more elegant method, but to back out of an app or window, I just pressed the Escape key until I returned to the desktop. To get out of the VM desktop, press the Right CTRL key one time, then close the VM window. You might want to either Take a Snapshot (a named restore state) or use either the Save Machine State or the Send Shutdown Command when closing the app - that way, if you need to get to the VM again, you can skip some of the installation you just did. Using Save Machine State is the easiest, but snapshots let you back up after installing any app that causes a problem.

A powerful story of the unprecedented athletic feats and accomplishments of one of the greatest baseball players to ever live . . . and the faith that has made them possible.

After only ten seasons, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols is already one of the greatest players to have ever laced up a pair of spikes. But when adulation and glory come his way, Pujols is quick to credit another—to point people to his hero. “At the end of the day,” he says, “as long as I glorify Him, and those 45,000 people know who I represent … that’s what it’s about. It’s about representing God.” In Pujols: More Than the Game, authors Tim Ellsworth and Scott Lamb will satisfy fans who like their baseball slathered in stats and stories . . . while at the same time, shedding light on the faith that makes it all possible.

Today's free Android App is OfficeSuite Pro 5, by Mobile Systems, Inc., which normally sells for $14.95. Even though an office suite came on my Android tablet, I'm grabbing this one in anticipation of using it on the Kindle Fire (although the lack of keyboard support on it will limit it's usefulness for some types of documents, I suspect). Looks like it also supports my phone (which does have a keyboard), although it's screen is so small, I don't often edit much more than keeping a shopping list on it. However, just being able to view your MS Office documents and sync with Google docs should prove very useful. If you don't yet have an Android device, you might want to try to borrow one today, so you can add this pgm to your library.

The Dead Man is a new, collaborative, series by Lee Goldberg and and William Rabkin, along with (usually) another author on each volume. The entire series is currently marked down to 99 cents per volume, including one pre-order. These were in the $3 range (and a 3-title omnibus is $8) and the low pricing won't last long. You can read more about the series on the KindlePost, but you may already know Mr. Goldberg from his Hollywood writing (Mr. Monk), if not his self-published works (The Walk is one of my favorites). This series is horror/paranormal/thriller, with six books out so far (and it appears there will be twelve, all total).
Face Of Evil (Dead Man #1)
Matt Cahill is a widower leading a quiet, solitary life...cutting wood at a lumber mill in the Pacific Northwest, watching out for his trouble-prone friend Andy, and making his first, tentative attempt at a new romance with Rachel, a co-worker. But a trip with Rachel to a ski resort goes tragically wrong... and he is killed in an avalanche. That should be the end of his story. But for Matt, it's only the beginning, the first step in a horrifying odyssey across a dark world that exists within our own...and where he must confront a violent, supernatural entity that spreads evil among us like a plague...

Ring of Knives (Dead Man #2)
Matt believes an institutionalized madman may hold the secret to defeating Mr. Dark, the horrific jester with the rotting touch who has tormented him ever since his miraculous resurrection. So he infiltrates a lunatic asylum, where is swept up in a spiral of bloodshed and insanity, all stoked by supernatural forces that he's never faced before....and that might just drive him to madness. His only chance of escaping with his life and sanity intact is to face the unspeakable terror that awaits him deep in the asylum's fog-shrouded woods...and within the Ring of Knives.

Hell In Heaven (Dead Man #1)
The sign on the exit reads "Heaven." What better place could there be for a dead man to visit? But when Matt takes the ramp, he finds a banner welcoming him by name to a tiny town that has seemingly been left behind by the 21st century...and is in the grip of an unspeakable horror. Cast as an unwilling savior, Matt comes to their rescue, but soon discovers that evil has more lethal forms than he ever imagined...and that they can't all be defeated with courage and an expertly-wielded ax.

The Dead Woman (Dead Man #4)
Matt thought he was alone with his torment, that he was the only one who could see the evil in people’s souls as rotting flesh. But in a small town in Tennessee, terrorized by a vicious serial killer, Matt meets a woman who may see the same dark world that what he does…and who may be able to reveal the secrets behind to his mysterious rebirth. But Mr. Dark, the depraved, immortal enemy that Matt has chased across the country, is here too and determined to stop him before he can find what he seeks.

The Blood Mesa (Dead Man #5)
Matt signs on as a laborer for a group of archeologists and graduate students unearthing Native American ruins in a desolate corner of New Mexico. But the dig atop a blood-red mesa uncovers more than artifacts, awakening an ancient evil with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Now Matt, armed only with his trusty ax, must protect a handful of terrified innocents from imminent slaughter...and battle a horror so powerful, it once wiped out an entire civilization... and could do it again.

Kill Them All (Dead Man #6)
When Matt wanders into a struggling Nevada tourist trap recreation of an "old west" town, he's unaware that he’s being trailed by a Special Ops team of professional mercenaries hired by a University desperate to unlock the secret behind his resurrection...and that he's put everyone around him in dire jeopardy. The mercenaries have no intention of letting Matt escape...or letting any witnesses survive. Matt finds himself in a deadly bind. Somehow he must rally the peaceful citizens into defending themselves against the sadistic, well-armed mercenaries… or sacrifice himself to save them from certain death.
