Free Book (EPUB) - How to Drive Your Competition Crazy

How to Drive Your Competition Crazy: Creating Disruption for Fun and Profit ($9.99 Kindle), by Guy Kawasaki, is free in the Sony store. No idea if this one will show up in the Kindle store or is a mistake at Sony; also, at Amazon, there is an older edition from 1995, which has the reviews linked.
Book Description
If you were intrigued by the title of this book, you are probably the type of business book reader who's had enough of management self-help and touchy-feely tomes, enough of how-to guides that encourage you to take the kinder, gentler approach to competitors, customers, and employees. You are ready for the gloves to come off, and the one thing you'll want in your hands when they do is the first can-do, how-to, kick-butt gonzo guide to driving your competitors off the deep end.

In the time-honored tradition of the maxim "It's not how you play the game, but whether you win or lose," bestselling author of Selling the Dream and Forbes columnist Guy Kawasaki has written the definitive take-no-prisoners guide to help the Davids to beat the Goliaths. The product of Kawasaki's years of experience as an evangelist for the then-upstart Apple and as a computer guru and business strategist, How to Drive Your Competition Crazy as an invaluable source book of irreverent and sometimes extreme stratagems in sales, marketing, production, and human resources that will help your company or organization get and keep the upper hand.

Whether you are launching a new company or product, consolidating your strength in the marketplace, or trying to hold your own against a competitor with greater resources, How to Drive Your Competition Crazy offers a comprehensive blueprint for success. From the initial steps of learning as much about your own company as you do about your enemy to advanced techniques like playing with your opponents' minds, Guy Kawasaki explores every facet of the premise that the best defense is a good offense.

The Jasmine Trade ($1.99), by Denise Hamilton
Book Description
Everything was set. Seventeen-year-old Marina Lu had even ordered custom-made gowns for the ten bridesmaids who, in several months' time, would have preceded her down the aisle at her storybook wedding.

There isn't going to be a wedding. Marina lies dead, alone in her shiny status car in a suburban shopping center parking lot, her two-carat diamond engagement ring refracting another abruptly shattered Los Angeles dream. Was her death merely a carjacking gone bad? Or is there more to the story?

Marina's murder chillingly introduces Los Angeles Times reporter Eve Diamond to a subculture of "parachute kids," the rich Asian teens who are left to their own devices in California while their parents live and work in Hong Kong. Seeking American education and political stability for their children, the affluent parents often leave only an elderly housekeeper in charge of their vulnerable offspring.

What was Marina's story? Why was she, at such a young age, marrying twenty-four-year-old Michael Ho? Why is Marina's father, banker Reginald Lu, so reluctant to provide information? As Eve delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding Marina's life and death, she stumbles upon a troubled world of unmoored youth and parental neglect.

But Marina, in many ways, would seem to have been among the fortunate. She had money and her parents had power. Eve soon discovers a dramatically more tragic subculture, where destitute young Asian immigrants live in virtual sexual slavery. The story of May-li and her journey from a poor farming home in Fujian, China, to a brothel in Los Angeles is one that Eve will fight to tell and will never forget.

A moving, noir-accented crime novel that opens a rare window to an intriguing subject, The Jasmine Trade is a passionate and polished debut from an exciting new author.

Milkrun ($2.47), by Sarah Mlynowski

The Journals of Eleanor Druse ($3.96), by Eleanor Druse
Book Description
Eleanor Druse has always been interested in the paranormal, but her fascination intensifies after she has a Near-Death Experience at Kingdom Hospital while visiting a childhood friend who has just attempted suicide. Eleanor is treated for a mysterious condition at Boston General Hospital in Massachusetts, where she falls under the care of her nemesis, a surgeon named Stegman, who doesn’t believe in Eleanor's psychic gifts.

Eleanor escapes the clutches of Stegman and returns home to Lewiston, Maine, when she hears of more strange occurrences at nearby Kingdom Hospital. She feels compelled to investigate, and enlists her reluctant son Bobby, an orderly there, to aid her. Eleanor discovers that the hospital rests on the site of a textile mill that burned to the ground after the Civil War, killing many workers, including child laborers. She becomes convinced that the spirit of one girl, Mary Jensen, is trapped in the hospital, and that the apparition seeks resolution for her grisly death. She also senses other evil presences in the ancient hallways, including the spirit of a physician whose past may be intimately bound up with the child's spirit and with Eleanor’s childhood, as well.

These carefully kept journals trace Eleanor’s investigations into Kingdom Hospital, from the beginning of her covert work up until its stunning and terrifying conclusion. The journals are a fascinating work, providing insights into the very nature of the spirits that haunt the hereafter.

Hurry Down Sunshine ($1.59), by Michael Greenberg
Book Description
HURRY DOWN SUNSHINE TELLS THE STORY OF THE extraordinary summer when, at the age of fifteen, Michael Greenberg’s daughter was struck mad. It begins with Sally’s visionary crack-up on the streets of Greenwich Village, and continues, among other places, in the out-of-time world of a Manhattan psychiatric ward during the city’s most sweltering months. “I feel like I’m traveling and traveling with nowhere to go back to,” Sally says in a burst of lucidity while hurtling away toward some place her father could not dream of or imagine. Hurry Down Sunshine is the chronicle of that journey, and its effect on Sally and those closest to her–her brother and grandmother, her mother and stepmother, and, not least of all, the author himself. Among Greenberg’s unforgettable gallery of characters are an unconventional psychiatrist, an Orthodox Jewish patient, a manic Classics professor, a movie producer, and a landlord with literary dreams. Unsentimental, nuanced, and deeply humane, Hurry Down Sunshine holds the reader in a mesmerizing state of suspension between the mundane and the transcendent.

Give Me Liberty ($3.99), by Naomi Wolf
Book Description
As the practice of democracy becomes a lost art, Americans are increasingly desperate for a restored nation. Many have a general sense that the "system" is in disorder -- if not on the road to functional collapse. But though it is easy to identify our political problems, the solutions are not always as clear. In Give Me Liberty: A Handbook for American Revolutionaries, bestselling author Naomi Wolf illustrates the breathtaking changes that can take place when ordinary citizens engage in the democratic system the way the founders intended and tells how to use that system, right now, to change your life, your community, and ultimately, the nation.

You can pre-order the new edition of Last Exit in New Jersey ($0.99), by C.E. Grundler, at the same price as the self-published edition (which you can use to get a sample). Amazon has picked up this author on their Thomas & Mercer label, which means it's been proofed and edited in this edition. I will say, the first line of the synopsis has me thinking of a female Dexter, but the reviews on this one are quite good.
Book Description
Nice young ladies really shouldn't be dumping bodies at sea.

Then again, that isn't stopping Hazel Moran, and she can't figure where anyone got the idea she was nice to begin with. Raised aboard her father's aging schooner and riding shotgun in their old 18-wheeler, there's little on the road or water that she can't handle; it's her people skills that need work. Normally that isn't an issue - behind the wheel of a Kenworth most people tend to leave her alone. But when Hazel and her father become the targets of some unsavory characters hunting for her blue-haired cousin, their stolen tractor-trailer truck and a delivery that never arrived, she knows it's time to heed a lesson learned from her favorite hard-boiled paperbacks: playing nice will only end in tears.

For ten sweltering days Hazel navigates the Garden State's highways and shorelines, contending with a suspiciously wealthy stranger, white trash, Born Agains, appliance salesmen, an unstable stalker and his curiously troublesome companion. It'll take all her ingenuity, not to mention some fishing tackle and high voltage, if Hazel hopes to protect her family and unravel this tangle of greed and betrayal. And anyone who gets too close, no matter their intent, will discover just how dangerous Hazel truly is as she sets in motion a twisted plan to uncover the truth, settle some scores, and if possible not wind up dead in the process.

Evenings at the Argentine Club ($2.99), by Julia Amante
Book Description
Victor and Jaqueline Torres imagined moving to the U.S. would bring happiness and prosperity-instead they found a world of frustration. While Victor put long hours into his restaurant business, Jaqui devoted her life to her daughters, until they grew up and moved on. Even their eldest, Victoria, is torn trying to reconcile being the perfect Argentine daughter and an independent American woman. Antonio and Lucia Orteli face the same realities, especially when their only son Eric leaves their close-knit Argentine community in pursuit of his own dreams. When Eric unexpectedly shows up at the Argentine Club-the heart of the Argentine community in southern California-he starts a series of events that will bring these two families closer than ever. New relationships are formed and old ones are put to the test, as everyone must learn how to balance different cultures-and different dreams-without hurting those they love.

Scandalous Lord Dere: From Secrets of a Perfect Night ($1.99), by Stephanie Laurens, was briefly (and no doubt, mistakenly) free for Australians to pre-order. This looks like the correct price now and it's available to those in the US. From the sample online, this is novella length (and includes excerpts from two other titles).
Book Description
Once upon a time, a young woman attended a New Year’s Eve ball...The moon shone brightly, music filled the air. Kisses were stolen and promises made. But what happens when morning comes? A new year brings new scandal when a rake awakens in the bed of the flame-haired temptress who had seduced him years before. All of society has them bedded, but can he convince her to become wedded?

The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp ($1.99), by Rick Yancey, is at a good price for those who missed this young adult title at a penny this past spring.
Book Description
Alfred Kropp was just trying to survive high school when his guardian uncle gets him roped into a suspicious get-rich-quick scheme that changes his life forever: stealing Excalibur — the legendary sword of King Arthur. But after Alfred unwittingly delivers the sword into the hands of a man with enormously evil intentions, he sets off on an unlikely quest to try to right his wrong and save the world from imminent destruction.

This gripping, fast-paced, hilarious novel is both a thrilling adventure story and an engaging account of one boy’s coming of age.

A Bottle in the Gaza Sea ($2.51), by Valerie Zenatti, is also aimed at the teen market.
Book Description
A seventeen-year-old from Jerusalem, Tal Levine comes from a family that always believed peace would come to the Middle East. She cried tears of joy when President Clinton and Yitzhak Rabin shook hands with Yasser Arafat in 1993-a moment of hope that would stay with her forever. But when a terrorist explosion kills a young woman at a café in Jerusalem, something changes for Tal. One day she writes a letter, puts it in a bottle, and sends it to Gaza-to the other side-beginning a correspondence with a young Palestinian man that will ultimately open their eyes to each other's lives and hearts.

Dirt ($1.99) and Dead in the Water ($3.99), by Stuart Woods, are the second and third titles in his Stone Barrington series. These would be a no-brainer if the first in the series, New York Dead, were also on sale, but even with it at $7.99, it works out to about $4.65 per title to pick up all three.
Dirt
Feared and loathed for her poison pen and ice queen persona, Amanda Dart has made her share of enemies. Then the tables are turned. An anonymous gossipmonger is faxing Amanda's personal and private peccadilloes to anyone who can read. Desperate to save her reputation, she enlists the help of New York lawyer and private investigator Stone Barrington to learn the identity of the faxer. And everyone in the world of tabloid journalism becomes a suspect.

But the faxes don't stop. In fact, they get worse. And Stone winds up with more leads than one man can handle, until Amanda takes matters dangerously into her own hands and turns the world of gossip on its head. As the circle of suspects shrinks, Stone discovers that even the most respected members of the social scene will stop at nothing—even homicide—to clear their sullied names.

Dead in the Water
Stone Barrington only wants a winter getaway from the chill of New York in the beautiful, tropical Caribbean paradise of St. Mark's. But what the lawyer and ex-cop gets instead is the chance to defend Allison Manning. The beautiful young woman stands accused of killing her rich husband on board their luxurious yacht and then burying him at sea.

Stone isn't exactly conversant with the island country's law, but this much is clear to him: Allison is being railroaded by the perverse sense of justice of a prosecutor who will do anything to stay in office. Donning the robe and wig of a British barrister, Stone does everything he can to save Allison—from publicizing the case all over the American press to conducting the kind of smart, tough investigation that money can't buy. Just when he has the jury in the palm of his hands, a shocking reversal of fortune changes everything. And what was once a sure thing begins to look a lot like a death sentence.

Today's Deals

Carry Yourself Back to Me ($1.99), by Deborah Reed, is today's Kindle Deal of the day. The ebook is published via AmazonEncore, so is an Amazon exclusive (although you can still get the paper edition at B&N, at least, for now). In addition, due to Amazon also selling MP3's, you can get a list of the music either mentioned in the book or suggested by the author and purchase the entire list to listen to while reading the book (this should work on the Fire, but definitely works all other Kindle devices except the newest $79 Kindle, which lacks a speaker); just save the MP3's in the \music directory on the Kindle, start them on the Experimental menu, then go back to reading the book.
Book Description
Famed alt-country artist Annie Walsh has more than enough reason to sing her version of the blues, including a broken heart, a stalled career, and a troubled family. Annie seeks refuge from an upended love affair with her producer, Owen Pettybone, by sequestering herself at home with her old dog Detour, surrounded by a lush Florida tangelo grove. There, she spends her days furiously sanding down the house’s every veneer in a vain attempt at erasing the painful memory of the love she lost. Soon, however, this quiet, small town existence—far from recording studios, ardent fans, and affairs of the heart—comes crashing down around her. A violent murder connected to her brother Calder threatens to tear her family apart and forces Annie to shore up her loyalties and uproot profound disappointments from her distant past. The evidence stacks against Calder, compounded by his lifelong affliction with Tourette syndrome that causes some in the community to cast aspersions on the soundness of his mind. As the circumstances converge to challenge lifetime ties and forge unexpected new bonds, this soulful, stirring novel shifts its narrative from an imperiled and ever-changing present, where each hour brings an unforeseen and unwelcome piece of news, to the poignant childhood days of first allegiances and life-altering loss. Like a fine and forlorn love ballad, the gifted, conflicted Annie lulls the reader into a journey through love and loss that mines the mysterious, and, at times, paradoxical rhythms of the human heart. As vibrant as Annie's treasured tangelo grove, Carry Yourself Back to Me cultivates an always tender, sometimes tart, portrait of one family’s regret and redemption. Inflected with melancholy and redeemed by melody, this deeply affecting novel is certain to strike a resonant chord with music fans and lovers of fine fiction everywhere.

Breathless ($2.80 Kindle, B&N), the third title in The House of Rohan series by Anne Stuart, is the Nook Daily Find (matched by Amazon). You'll find the rest of the series also very reasonably priced, right at $5/book.
Book Description
Ruined beyond repair and shunned by London society, lovely Miranda Rohan rebelliously embraces the freedom that comes from having nothing left to lose. However, this dangerous course throws her under the power of the darkly enigmatic Lucien de Malheur—known to many as the Scorpion.

Seeking to destroy the Rohans, Lucien traps Miranda in a marriage she thinks is based on friendship but instead is rooted in vengeance. Yet even when she realizes the truth, their enmity fuels a shocking passion—and perhaps even more.

Such a man might drive anyone to murder….

If you are an Anne Stuart fan, then you must also check out her catalog on Kindle. Besides a free book courtesy of Mira, you'll several reasonably priced short stories and a number of novels (suspense and romance) in both the under $4 and under $5 price ranges. The two below are just a small taste of what you can find. One of the best deals, though, is Anne Stuart's Out-of-Print Gems, which contains five novels, complete with notes by the author on why these are her favorites amongst her books.
Anne Stuart's Out-of-Print Gems
Anne Stuart's Out-of-Print Gems is a special collection of some of Anne's personal favorites from her long career. She has added comments to share why each book was, and still is, important to her. In her own words: "These are some of my favorite books — over the top, with a dollop of humor, a streak of darkness, quirky heroines, devastating heroes, and the really satisfying happy ending you can only find in a series romance. Enjoy!"

Bundle includes Night of the Phantom, One More Valentine, Cinderman, The Soldier and the Baby, and Wild Thing.

One More Valentine (included in bundle)
HE WAS THE STRANGEST VALENTINE!

When James Sheridan Rafferty died in the famed Saint Valentine's Day massacre, he'd no idea that Cupid's wicked angels would give him a second-chance ... in 1993. All he had to do was fall madly in love within forty-eight hours.

But could a real Chicago gangster with a chip on his shoulder - and a down-and-dirty twenties style even Bogart would envy - fall truly in love? It hardly helped that the day of hearts and flowers fell on Friday the 13th.

Helen Emerson complicated matters, since the good-hearted gangster didn't have time to save damsels in distress. No doubt Helen would make a fabulous lover, but she was no gun moll. Still, with time running out, she was Rafferty's only hope.

Moonrise (one of several recently released ebooks that originally published by Signet)
Annie Sutherland is fast finding out her life was built on lies. Haunted by her father’s death, Annie seeks out his protégé in the CIA, James McKinley, and is thrust into a secret shadow world that sends shivers of terror through her. For she finds James is no longer the conservative bureaucrat she remembers, but a mysterious, tortured fugitive—very armed and very dangerous. Annie and James are thrown together on a wild run that draws them closer to each other. Yet Annie is still not sure who James really is—a tender, passionate lover or a ruthless assassin? Who can she possibly trust with violence exploding all around her...and love perhaps the greatest snare of all…?

Free Book (Kindle/nook) - A Wee Christmas Homicide

A Wee Christmas Homicide, the third title in the Liss MacCrimmon Mystery series by Kaitlyn Dunnett, is free in the Kindle store and from Barnes & Noble (careful buying from the nook - there are two editions and one is over $10). I do wish that the first title in the series, Kilt Dead ($5.59), were offered free instead and they do seem to be rushing the shopping season a bit, but I'll still download this one for my TBR list.
Book Description
'Tis the season to be jolly, but in Moosetookalook, Maine, Christmas cheer is in short supply due to a snowless winter that's keeping skiers and shoppers at a distance. Fortunately, Liss MacCrimmon of the Scottish Emporium has a plan…

Liss’s brainstorm focuses on Tiny Teddies, the new “hot” toy of the season. Every store across the country is out of stock—except a few wee establishments in good ol' Moosetookalook.

The first sign of something amiss occurs when the last Tiny Teddy is summarily executed: shot through the heart in the display window of greedy toy store owner Gavin Thorne. But the Teddy’s demise is just a precursor to the eerily similar murder of Gavin himself…

Now, with the Twelve (or, in Scots terms, the Daft) Days of Christmas rapidly approaching, Liss has a plate full of things worse than haggis to contend with, starting with a stockroom packed with poultry (don’t ask), and ending with a killer who’d like to see Liss’s goose well and fully cooked…

  3. You will get an email from Amazon with your promotional code, right away.

You'll have a promotion code on your account that will apply to the FIRST book you buy (from the list) after that. Note that even if the book is free, you'll pay a dollar, so be careful which one you pick after you enter the code -- make sure you don't grabbing a low cost title by accident, which can happen if you apply the code right away, before you are ready to buy the book. Current prices range from just above $2 to $20.00 (End Malaria, with $20 donated by Amazon, even if you only pay $1), with several in the upper teen range. You should save the code and not enter it until you are ready to buy a book.

To recap: you must claim the offer by October 27 and must do so from your Kindle with Special Offers. You'll get a promotion code via email and you have until November 27 to enter and redeem the code. Once you enter it, it will work on the next book on the list that you purchase.

Limited to one per customer and one per device.

If you want this offer on more than one account (and you have multiple devices), be sure to change the registration of the devices before you attempt to get the promotion code on any of them (I ran into an issue with the device I'd ordered for hubby's account, as a gift, because I forgot to check the gift box; it was on the same account when I claimed an offer and his KSO sent him the same promo code, even after it was registered to his account, which is where we leave it registered, now).

Be sure to click on each of the Genre labels on the offer page, as there are often hundreds of books in a category (Romance is the largest, of course, with several hundred to choose from). I have found a number of books in the list that I had already purchased, but I'm positive I'll find (more than) one that I'll order on this deal. If you can't find a single book you want (or have extra deals on extra KSO's in family member accounts), you could always use your dollar to buy End Malaria and get Amazon to donate $20 to the charity.

Once you have the promotional code, you have until November 27 to complete your purchase (but, see below). Like previous offers, this one requires you to use the full checkout process in order to enter your promotional code. Also, like all Amazon sales that use promotional codes, if you have a gift card balance, you must use it for the payment (if there is not a sufficient balance, then you can pick which credit card or other payment to use).

Limit one offer per customer and per device. From the Terms & Conditions, though, it appears you can pick up to 5 games for this offer and get 10% off of the entire order.

If you are planning to take advantage of this one, be sure to do so right away. The titles the promotion code are valid on are already 25%-85% off, but those prices will only last thru 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) October 29, 2011. If you don't have a KSO, you can take advantage of the sale prices (but not the extra 10%).

Today's Deals and Bargain Books

If you haven't used your coupon code, you are down to only two days left on the Buy a Romance for $1 KSO offer.

BoneMan's Daughters ($1.99), by Ted Dekker, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. That's a good price on a good book (and one that is appropriate to read, for the Halloween season, if you are into a good thriller); looks like I bought it a couple of years ago, but a nowhere near this good a price.
Book Description
They call him BoneMan, a serial killer who's abducted six young women. He's the perfect father looking for the perfect daughter, and when his victims fail to meet his lofty expectations, he kills them by breaking their bones and leaving them to die.

Intelligence officer Ryan Evans, on the other hand, has lost all hope of ever being the perfect father. His daughter and wife have written him out of their lives.

Everything changes when BoneMan takes Ryan's estranged daughter, Bethany, as his seventh victim. Ryan goes after BoneMan on his own.

The Digital Photography Book: The Step-by-Step Secrets for How to Make Your Photos Look Like the Pros, Volume 1 ($3.50 Kindle, B&N), by Scott Kelby, is today's Nook Daily Find. Amazon has matched the price on one of the two editions in their store, but you might want to get samples to determine if there is any difference between the two, other than size, since the publisher has entered the same edition date on the two.
Book Description
Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography--how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think).

This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."

This isn't a book of theory—it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button.

Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you.

100 Words To Make You Sound Smart ($4.76) is one of eight "100 word" titles discounted under $5 by the Editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries.
Book Description
The newest title in the popular 100 Words series is an informative and entertaining resource that can help anyone be right on the money when looking for words that will make a point, seal the deal, or just keep folks listening. Chosen by the editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries, these words will appeal to anyone who wants to be a more compelling communicator—as a worker, consumer, advocate, friend, dinner companion, or even as a romantic prospect.

The book includes a colorful variety of words, including handy words of just one syllable (such as glib) and words derived from the names of famous people (such as Freudian slip and Machiavellian).

There are expressions from popular culture (Catch-22) and words that date back to classical civilization (spartan and stoic). Each word is clearly defined and shown in context with quotations from contemporary sources: magazines, newspapers, broadcast media, movies, and television. For many words, quotations from distinguished authors and speakers are also given and word histories are explained.

Like its predecessors in this successful series, 100 Words to Make You Sound Smart provides an affordable and enjoyable way to communicate more effectively. It offers the coveted gift of gab to anyone who needs to “say it right”—and to anyone who wants to sound more articulate.

I'm Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Stand-Up Comedy's Golden Era ($3.48), by William Knoedelseder
Book Description
In the mid-1970s, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Andy Kaufman, Richard Lewis, Robin Williams, Elayne Boosler, Tom Dreesen, and several hundred other shameless showoffs and incorrigible cutups from all across the country migrated en masse to Los Angeles, the new home of Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. There, in a late-night world of sex, drugs, dreams and laughter, they created an artistic community unlike any before or since. It was Comedy Camelot—but it couldn’t last.

William Knoedelseder, then a cub reporter covering the scene for the Los Angeles Times, was there when the comedians—who were not paid for performing—tried to change the system and incidentally tore apart their own close-knit community. In I’m Dying Up Here he tells the whole story of that golden age, of the strike that ended it, and of how those days still resonate in the lives of those who were there.

The dog on the cover of Dogs I Have Met: And the People They Found ($3.99), by Ken Foster, looks a lot like some of the ones that frequent our local dog park.
Book Description
Ken Foster knows that a dog can change a person's life - and that several dogs can change it even more. His three adopted dogs have helped him overcome a number of difficult times in his life - including a heart condition that saw him land in hospital, and the death of two very close friends."Dogs I Have Found" is a collection of stories, from both the author and other owners of rescued and adopted dogs that show how man's best friend can provide love and friendship during the best and the worst of times. This is a heart-warming volume that is sure to find a place of the bookshelf of dog lovers everywhere.

Dead Girls Are Easy ($0.99), by Terri Garey, is the lowest price I've seen on this start of her Nicki Styx series. If you missed it or held off when it was $1.99 last year, be sure to grab it this time around. I've already replaced my paperback copies of this one and the next two in the series. *recommended
Book Description
There's something about almost dying that makes a girl rethink her priorities. Take Nicki Styx—she was strictly goth and vintage, until a brush with the afterlife leaves her with the ability to see dead people.

Before you can say boo, Atlanta's ghosts are knocking at Nicki's door. Now her days consist of reluctantly cleaning up messes left by the dearly departed, leading ghouls to the Light . . . and one-on-one anatomy lessons with Dr. Joe Bascombe, the dreamy surgeon who saved her life. All this catering to the deceased is a real drag, especially for a girl who'd rather be playing hanky-panky with her hunky new boyfriend . . . who's beginning to think she's totally nuts.

But things get even more complicated when a friend foolishly sells her soul to the devil, and Nicki's new gift lands her in some deep voodoo.

As it turns out for Nicki Styx, death was just the beginning.

A Friend of the Family ($1.89), by Lauren Grodstein, has very good reviews and I expect it to jump back up in price, once Amazon clears out some of their hardcover inventory.
Book Description
Pete Dizinoff, a skilled and successful New Jersey internist, has a loving and devoted wife, a network of close friends, an impressive house, and, most of all, a son, Alec, now nineteen, on whom he has pinned all his hopes. But Pete hadn’t expected his best friend’s troubled daughter to set her sights on his boy. When Alec falls under her spell, Pete sets out to derail the romance, never foreseeing the devastating consequences.

In a riveting story of suburban tragedy, Lauren Grodstein charts a father’s fall from grace as he struggles to save his family, his reputation, and himself.

Perfectly Dateless and Perfectly Invisible, by Kristin Billerbeck, are both currently marked down to $4.79. Together, the make up the Universally Misunderstood series and are her two of her newest novels from Christian publisher Revell.
Perfectly Dateless
Daisy Crispin has 196 days to find the right date for the prom. There's only one problem--her parents won't let her date or even talk to a guy on the phone. Oh, and she's totally invisible at school, has to wear lame homemade clothes, and has no social skills. Okay, so maybe there's more than one problem. Can she talk her parents into letting her go to the prom? Or will they succeed at their obvious attempt to completely ruin her life?

With hilarious and truthful writing, Kristin Billerbeck uncovers the small--and large--mortifications that teen girls encounter. Readers will fall in love with Daisy's sharp wit and resourcefulness as she navigates the world of boys, fashion, family, and friendship.

Perfectly Invisible
It's Daisy Crispin's final trimester of high school, and she plans to make it count. Her long-awaited freedom is mere months away, and her big plans for college loom in the future. Everything is under control. Or is it? Her boyfriend is treating her like she's invisible, and her best friend is selling bad costume jewelry in the school quad--and hanging out with her boyfriend. To top it off, Daisy's major humiliation for the year will be remembered in the yearbook for all eternity. It's enough to make her wonder if maybe being invisible isn't so bad after all.

With more of the funny-but-too-true writing readers have come to expect from Kristin Billerbeck, Perfectly Invisible shows teen girls that everyone is special--no matter what they're going through.

Starting Your Day Right: Devotions for Each Morning of the Year ($2.99), by Joyce Meyer, is from Hatchette imprint FaithWords.
Book Description
Readers are invited to start the morning off right with #1 New York Times bestselling author Joyce Meyer's devotions for each day of the year.

Fallen Founder: The Life of Aaron Burr ($3.99), by Nancy Isenberg, should be a good one for the history buffs out there. Careful buying direct from your Kindle, though, as there are two editions at the same price and the other is in the Topaz format.
Book Description
A controversial challenge to the works of Ron Chernow and David McCullough

With Fallen Founder , Nancy Isenberg plumbs rare and obscure sources to shed new light on everyone’s favorite founding villain. The Aaron Burr whom we meet through Isenberg’s eye-opening biography is a feminist, an Enlightenment figure on par with Jefferson, a patriot, and—most importantly—a man with powerful enemies in an age of vitriolic political fighting. Revealing the gritty reality of eighteenth-century America, Fallen Founder is the authoritative restoration of a figure who ran afoul of history and a much-needed antidote to the hagiography of the revolutionary era.

The Echo Man ($4.99), by Richard Montanari
Book Description
Tormented by the exquisite beauty of a concerto and the bloodcurdling cries of a dying woman, the Echo Man composes his own symphony in response: a string of artfully staged slayings—all of them linked to cold murder cases and designed to taunt the police of Philadelphia.

Detective Kevin Byrne hears sounds, too. They wake him in the night, haunt him by day, and remind him of the first homicide suspect he ever arrested: a gifted, beautiful classical musician who inexplicably went mad and became murderous. Now Byrne believes that Philly’s serial killings might be linked to that case. But his partner, Jessica Balzano, has too many bodies on her hands to worry about Byrne’s strange intuition or personal demons—until all the perfectly placed clues, all the evidence, all the deception point Balzano in one direction, and she discovers that the killer is closer than she could ever have suspected.

From the acclaimed author of Merciless, The Echo Man is a masterpiece of suspense that builds to a crescendo of terror and stunning surprise.

Book Description
