Penguin and Amazon Reach Agreement - Books to Follow

An official Amazon Customer Service rep has announced that Amazon and Penguin have reached an agreement on ebook sales. The message is buried in one of the myriad of threads complaining about the lack of newer Penguin titles in the Amazon store.

I'm already seeing signs of the logjam of titles clearing: you can now pre-order Bullet ($14.82), by Laurell K. Hamilton (although if you hurry, you can still get the Hardcover for $9.99, where it was marked down during the standoff). Interestingly enough, this title (and a couple of others from the Penguin imprint Berkley) isn't sold by the publisher, but by Amazon; it looks like the new agreement is NOT an Agency agreement at all, but the traditional retailer agreement that Random House and a few others have stuck with. I don't see any Roc or Ace titles yet, but the ones from Berkley are only starting to show availability in the states and not all of those (I suspect they have to be manually updated, one at a time).

Book Description
The music came back up and the next group of little girls, slightly older, came out. There was a lot of that in the next hour and change. I liked dance, and it was no reflection on the kids, but my will to live began to seep away on about the fifth group of sequined children...

Anita Blake is back in St. Louis and trying to live a normal life-as normal as possible for someone who is a legal vampire executioner and a U. S. Marshal. There are lovers, friends and their children, school programs to attend. In the midst of all the ordinary happiness a vampire from Anita's past reaches out. She was supposed to be dead, killed in an explosion, but the Mother of All Darkness is the first vampire, their dark creator. It's hard to kill a god. This dark goddess has reached out to her here-in St. Louis, home of everyone Anita loves most. The Mother of All Darkness has decided she has to act now or never, to control Anita, and all the vampires in America.

The Mother of All Darkness believes that the triumvirate created by master vampire Jean-Claude with Anita and the werewolf Richard Zeeman has enough power for her to regain a body and to immigrate to the New World. But the body she wants to possess is already taken. Anita is about to learn a whole new meaning to sharing her body, one that has nothing to do with the bedroom. And if the Mother of All Darkness can't succeed in taking over Anita's body for herself, she means to see that no one else has the use of it, ever again. Even Belle Morte, not always a friend to Anita, has sent word: "Run if you can..."

Update (12:42PM): Looks like all the Berkley titles that had shown up earlier today as available to order are now back to being unavailable in the US. Including Bullet, above. A lot more books are showing up in the Kindle store; however, they are unavailable to US customers (including several that were available earlier today). Here are a few of the imprints that are starting to show up:
Berkley
Roc
Ace
Penguin
Dutton
Puffin
Putnam
Viking

And there are others.... Looking thru the lists, there are several books that I want to order (and several where I am tempted to get the Hardcover instead, since they are down to $9.99).

Hugo Awards Packet

This year, the Hugo Awards are doing things a little differently. Rather than a physical packet of reading material, they are releasing the entire list electronically to members, including supporting members who are not able to attend the conference in Australia. What that means is that for $50US or $70AUD, you can get copies of six novels, six novellas, six novelettes, five short stories, four graphic stories (plus a couple to read online only), and a number of related works, fanzines and other writing excerpts in various categories, all of which were considered to be prize-worthy examples by the awards committee. I found a password on one PDF (and, yes, most of the packet is in PDF form, although there are a few with multiple formats and I saw at least one PRC/Mobi file on a quick look-thru), so that one will be a PC only read, rather than moving to my Kindle and there are a few that include links to online only reads (a few graphic/comics sites are online only publications, for example), but otherwise they should work well on an ereader.

If you don't want to join, a number of the short stories, novelettes, novellas and graphic stories are available online to read, for the duration of the voting period (yes, you are expected to vote, but there is little to stop you from skipping this part), which ends 31 July 2010 23:59 PDT. You can sign up online, HERE, but you will have a decision to make: let them process the charges in Australian dollars, which will mean possibly paying a small exchange fee to your bank or credit card company, and a total based on the current exchange rate (when I checked, it worked out to around $65US; PayPal tells you how much before you complete the transaction), OR you can use their manual registration and payment option via PayPal and pay a flat $50US (directions are on the registration page). If a bargain price is your main consideration, the latter is the way to go. However, you'll want to add to your PayPal message that you wish to get all your material via email, or they will send you everything via snail mail - adding at least a week to get anything, here in the States. In addition, rather than the automated system set up to issue registration info (which you need to download the books), your registration is handled manually, by a group of volunteers; even with several emails to them to check on status, mine took three weeks to complete and get my password via email. With only two months left in the voting period, that would not leave much time to read the entries if I chose that method today.

I'm listing below the complete packet contents, with links to the freely available items (many are only online until voting ends). I've included Kindle or Amazon book links to the novels (along with prices), so you can check out reviews or a few samples before deciding if you want to participate.

Free Book (nook) - The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker

The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker ($6.99$2.99), by Leanna Renee Hieber, is free in the Barnes and Noble store (and discounted in the Kindle store). This is the first in her Strangely Beautiful series, was first published last year and recently was picked up on option for a musical production

Book Description
What fortune awaited sweet, timid Percy Parker at Athens Academy? Considering how few of Queen Victoria’s Londoners knew of it, the great Romanesque fortress was dreadfully imposing, and little could Percy guess what lay inside. She had never met the powerful and mysterious Professor Alexi Rychman, knew nothing of the growing shadow, the Ripper and other supernatural terrors against which his coterie stood guard. She knew simply that she was different, haunted, with her snow-white hair, pearlescent skin and uncanny gifts. But this arched stone doorway offered a portal to a new life, an education far from the convent—and an invitation to an intimate yet dangerous dance at the threshold of life and death…

Free Mini-Games at Amazon

Many (if not most) of the games available as Game Downloads at Amazon include a free trial mode - you download the entire game and can play for a limited time (usually 30 minutes) before you must purchase the game in order to continue. A few of their games lack this feature, requiring you to pay up front (which means, for me, I skip their games entirely, as I've had too many games not work well on my computers, in the past). Now, they have a new type of sample, a Free Demo version, for a very limited number of titles (including one that ONLY has a Free Demo version available, with no Standard version to purchase).

From what I can tell, these demo versions have an unlimited time for play (but not all are compatible with 64-bit Windows 7), albeit with a limited scope: for example, one includes only seven levels, but still includes an online multiplayer mode. Another difference between these games and the ones with free trials: the downloads are very large in size, ranging from one to two GB in size (and take 1/2 hour to a full hour to download, using broadband). For each of the Free Demos, I've also included the price and link for the full game, in case you end up addicted and want more. In either case, the demo is yours to keep and continue playing, unlike the trial versions that self-destruct after a set period of time.

Mount & Blade: Warband ($29.99 Standard version)

  • Fully playable demo up to level 7
  • Multiplayer battles with up to 64 players. Multiplayer modes include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Conquest, Battle, and Siege.
  • New models with greater detail and high-quality textures.
  • A campaign allowing you to become the ruler of a faction and convince lords to become your vassals.

Powerful groups have different interests that often crossed, war broke out again. However this time it is the struggle not for mere control, this is struggle for survival. The clans want to eliminate the weaker ones standing in their way and will stop at nothing to dominate their enemies. To achieve their goals they use not only military means, but economic ones as well. As of now none of the clans has managed to achieve complete victory.

UFO Aftermath ($6.99 Standard version)

Game Description
Combining a global strategy with small squad tactical combat, the challenge offered is to fight against an alien invasion. Featuring run time generated tactical missions with innovative simultaneous combat action; the genre is also enhanced with strong RPG elements, offering a quite unique mix of strategic ideas.
  • RPG - Your soldiers will improve as they gain more experience. Their skills are derived from these statistics, and each point that you put into any one of these attributes will have a noticeable effect on that soldier's skills. These attributes are: Strength, Agility, Dexterity, Willpower, Intelligence, and Perception
  • Strategy - You must manage your bases, interceptions, and squads. Territory is equal to power in the game - the more you control, the better your interceptor coverage. Also, the faster you research, the better things could be.
  • Tactics - Fighting on the ground against aliens and mutants for the control of territories. Once you control a territory, you can decide what type of base you want there: Research, Military, Manufacture or Biomass repulsion.
  • Combat - Unique combat system features all of the best elements of both turn-based and real-time combat systems. You give orders while the game is paused to avoid the frantic rush of a real time system. While in pause you can give your troops very detailed orders taking as much time as you like. Once you are finished you simply start the game and continue playing. Once the game is underway you can pause the game at any point to update or change your orders and the game will automatically pause when important events occur, so that you may modify your plans accordingly. This combat is combining the finely grained tactics of a turn-based game with the realism of a real time system.
  • Randomly generated tactical missions - each playing field will be unique meaning no two games are the same.

Free Book (nook) - Storm Front

Storm Front ($6.29 Kindle), by Jim Butcher, the first book in the excellent series The Dresden Files, is available free this week using a coupon you pick up in a physical Barnes and Noble store. Last week, I didn't even have to show a device to get the free coupon, but be sure to stop by early, as some people who stopped by on Sunday were reporting that their stores had run out (luckily, a few were at least able to get an early coupon for this week, so it wasn't a wasted trip).

Once you have your coupon, log onto bn.com/redeem and enter the coupon code to add the book to your account. I don't know how you'll do this with a nook (and didn't try with my Kindle, as the book doesn't work there, anyway), but on the iPhone, I used the free internet service and Safari to enter the code, then opened the B&N reader and started reading the book within about a minute or so.

Book Description
Harry Dresden--Wizard
Lost items found. Paranormal investigations.
Consulting. Advice. Reasonable rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties, or Other Entertainment.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things--and most of them don't play too well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a--well, whatever.

There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get... interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.

Shut Up and Kiss Me ($5.59 Kindle), by Christie Craig, which will be released on May 25, is available to pre-order in the Barnes and Noble store for $2.62.

Book Description
When PR expert Shala Winters gets hired to increase the tourist trade in a Texas town mostly populated by Native Americans, her schemes stir up a storm of trouble-with both the town's commanding lawman and someone after Shala's life!

WELCOME TO PRECIOUS, TEXAS...where fistfights serve as dinner theater and fire ants rain from the sky. The locals are usually very friendly, if a bit eccentric. No pictures please, or you may find yourself a guest of the county morgue.

Photojournalist Shala Winters already had her hands full bringing tourism to this backward, podunk little town, but her job just got tougher. Pictures can say a thousand words, and one of Shala’s is screaming bloody murder. Now she has to entrust a macho, infuriating lawman with her life—but she’ll never trust him with her heart.

Trusted or not, Sky Gomez isn’t about to let a killer get his hands on Shala’s Nikon—or any of her more comely assets, for that matter. Her mouth might move faster than a Piney Woods roadrunner, but all he can think about is how good it must taste…and how she’ll never escape true love.

Free Book - Three Minutes More

Three Minutes More ($2.99 Kindle), by Edward O'Dell, is free, for a limited time, at Smashwords. I don't know how long the "limited time" offer will be valid (his first sale was only an hour and I missed it). So far, the reader reviews at Amazon look good, but it does deal with adult subjects (child abuse and relationships, from what I can tell of the tags it's accumulated). One reviewer mentions that the initial pages appear as if it is going to be a preachy style religion-oriented book, but that turns out to be far from the case.

Book Description
Michael Steven's already troubled young life has taken a sudden, dramatic turn for the worse. Severely injured, he does not know if he will survive the night.

Reflecting on the evening's dreadful events, wondering if he could have done anything to alter them, his thoughts begin to drift. He begins to contemplate his remarkable life, his dysfunctional family, and the unfortunate prospect that he may have to soon answer for his life to God.

While vividly recalling the most amusing, distressing, bizarre, and disturbing events of his life, he soon comes to realize "the monster you know is far easier to deal with than the monster you don't!"

Will he get the miracle he needs to make it through the night? If so, will he finally find peace?

Author's Note: This book deals with sensitive topics, and is intended for mature audiences only.

Barnes and Noble has a five dollar deal on a one-year, (print) subscription to Hot Rod, today only. Like the Amazon deal earlier today, this one is just in time for a nice Father's Day gift and is half the cost of a digital subscription (and with this magazine, the color pictures are much of what you want to see, so I would not want it on an ereader, anyway). A subscription at Amazon is $14, so you aren't quite saving as much as shown in the comparison to the single-issue newsstand price of $71.88, but it is a decent bargain, nonetheless.

Description
Hot Rod is America's leading hot rodding magazine, focusing on high-performance and personalized hot rods, Chevies, and muscle cars.

Field & Stream for Five Bucks

A one-year, automatic renewing subscription to Field & Stream can be picked up for $5.00 this week at Amazon (expires this coming Saturday at 11:59pm). This deal is just in time for a nice Father's Day gift (you can even print or email a gift card). You can easily cancel the auto-renewal using your Subscription Manager at Amazon, a feature I've recently explored - no more dealing with many different magazines on renewals or wondering which offer you received in the mail is really from the magazine and which is an overpriced 3rd party offering (or a new subscription disguised as a renewal, a type of junk mail that seems to be more and more common these days).

Description
America's Number One sportsman's magazine, featuring in-depth articles on hunting, fishing, outdoor adventure, and conservation news. First-class fiction, and more. Field & Stream, editorial excellence for over 100 years.

Game of the Day - The Scruffs

The ScruffsAmazon's Game Download of the Day is a $2.99 download of The Scruffs, the #1 game in the Seek & Find and Puzzle categories for Game Downloads. I picked this one up in February last year, when it was free for a brief time. Seeing it discounted today reminded me to install it on my netbook (where I've been wasting time playing it for a while this morning).

Update: This game qualifies to get a $5.00 credit on MP3 downloads from Amazon MP3, if you have not already received this on their current promotion. Essentially, pay $3 for the game and get $5 to spend on MP3's (or, get a $5 album for $3 and a free game tossed in). Not a bad deal at all.

Game Description
  • Meet The Charming Scruff Family.
  • Immersive Storyline With Witty Banter.
  • Unique And Fun Hint Mechanism.
  • Innovative Mini-Games
The Scruffs need your help to save their beloved family home from being sold! Grandpa Scruff has a solution - a scavenger hunt to recover his valuable artifacts. But in a surprising twist, Grandpa Scruff reveals that he's been hiding something else - a shocking family secret! Help the Scruffs uncover the secret that will change their lives forever by finding lost items and putting together the clues they need! The Scruffs - laugh at their witty family banter and fall in love with their charm!

Free Book (PDF) - Scags at 7

Scags at 7 (out of print), by Deborah Emin, is available as a free PDF on the author's website. It didn't convert very well to the Mobi format, but looks like it should be easily readable on my DX in the original PDF format.

Book Description
It is 1958, Skokie, IL. Seven-year old Claudia Harper Morgenstern, or Scags her proud name of choice begins the summer between second and third grade full of excitement and dread. Two months of no school is keen-o, but her best friend, Julia, will be at summer camp for weeks. Scags makes a new friend in Julia's absence, Davy, a hard talking nine-year old who tries his best to teach young Scags everything he knows, especially the things she shouldn't. But Scags soon has other things to distract her from missing Julia: something is wrong with Pops. He doesn't let her walk on the ceiling and drive the car anymore and he's taken up bowling his empty beer bottles into the fireplace. Mama tries to hold him together, while struggling to continue her life as a suburban lady of leisure, with help from Odessa, the maid who comes in from the South Side of Chicago. Everyone attempts to keep things in order, but what becomes clear to all is that Pops may not make it through the heat of the summer in one piece.

The Surgeon - $1.99 (or less)

Tess Gerritsen’s The Surgeon has been updated and now comes with "Bonus Content." It looks like it is in all the major stores, with the lowest price at Kobo. This was one of the first free books I read on my Kindle and one of the first I posted about here on the blog (on 9/11/08). After reading it, I immediately went and found more books in the series to read. Even at two dollars, it's a good read at an excellent price.

Update: Amazon has announced on their blog that this price is only going to be good until June 21st. I haven't tried (and probably won't), but you might even be able to get customer service to "update" your version of this book, if you got it previously, as I did. I know that I didn't get a notice that a corrected version had been posted (as I have with a few others this week), so that might not be possible. And the Bonus Content probably isn't enough to warrant an update, if you've already read the book.

You can also get an earlier version of this book for free over on Scribd, in PDF format. Just run it thru Calibre or the Amazon conversion services and you can read it on your Kindle or other reader (I wouldn't try it in PDF format, except on a DX or similar size screen).

This enhanced eBook includes the full text of the novel plus the following additional content:
  • An exclusive preview chapter from Tess Gerritsen’s Ice Cold, on sale in hardcover June 29, 2010
  • Rizzoli & Isles, In Their Own Words: learn more about the lead characters in these special essays written by the author
Rizzoli & Isles TV Pilot script: read pages from the script for the pilot episode of the TNT drama
Book Description
In her most masterful novel of medical suspense, New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen creates a villain of unforgettable evil--and the one woman who can catch him before he kills again.

He slips into their homes at night and walks silently into bedrooms where women lie sleeping, unaware of the horrors they soon will endure. The precision of the killer's methods suggests he is a deranged man of medicine, propelling the Boston newspapers and the frightened public to name him "The Surgeon."

The cops' only clue rests with another surgeon, the victim of a nearly identical crime. Two years ago, Dr. Catherine Cordell fought back and killed her attacker before he could complete his assault. Now she hides her fears of intimacy behind a cool and elegant exterior and a well-earned reputation as a top trauma surgeon.

Cordell's careful facade is about to crack as this new killer recreates, with chilling accuracy, the details of Cordell's own ordeal. With every new murder he seems to be taunting her, cutting ever closer, from her hospital to her home. Her only comfort comes from Thomas Moore, the detective assigned to the case. But even Moore cannot protect Cordell from a brilliant hunter who somehow understands--and savors--the secret fears of every woman he kills.

Filled with the authentic detail that is the trademark of this doctor turned author . . . and peopled with rich and complex characters--from the ER to the squad room to the city morgue--here is a thriller of unprecedented depth and suspense. Exposing the shocking link between those who kill and cure, punish and protect, The Surgeon is Tess Gerritsen's most exciting accomplishment yet.

Music to Read By - Jazz

If yesterday's Indie & Alternative Rock are not your style, you may be more interested in Amazon's Spring Jazz Sale. Again, they have a number of MP3 albums marked down (boxed sets, $6.99 and under $10 categories, as well as several on old-fashioned vinyl), they once again have several sampler albums available for free download.

Borders Kobo Reader - Pre-Order now for Father's Day

Kobo eReaderBy now, you've probably heard that Borders Bookstore is coming out with their own reader, the Kobo eReader. It's already been introduced in Canada (by KoboBooks, a Borders subsidiary) and is available to pre-order in the US ($149) and Australia ($199 AU; from the Kobo Global website). Delivery should be just in time for Father's Day (current delivery date is June 17). I was talking to the manager at our local store last weekend and he said they will be putting in a download station in place of most or all of the customer service desk, so that customers can purchase ebooks in the store and load them onto their readers. That'll eliminate the need for a computer and for much technical know-how on the part of those who get one (although you can still do your own backups and transfers at home, using either bluetooth or (I'll presume) USB).

So far, there isn't a Borders eBook Store, but it is being worked upon (and scheduled to open in June). There are quite a few differences with the readers available already - a quilted back should make it quite a bit easier to hold, but the big single button on the front seems to perform most of the chores that several keys or buttons are needed for with others. The desktop app is preloaded on the device - hook it to your computer and it will install, eliminating the requirement to find the software yourself (which I've run into with other readers). You get five type sizes and a choice of serif or sans serif fonts; there are several options for sorting books, but the only "collection" appears to be a way to tag "books I'm currently reading". The screen is a now-standard 6" eInk display and the unit is one of the lighter ones out there, at 8 ounces. Capacity-wise, though, you get one gigabyte of memory and an SD slot (but not an SDHC slot) that essentially means an unlimited capacity. So far, the formats supported at ePUB, PDF, and Adobe DRM (which should mean PDF and EPUB); I don't see any support for DOC, TXT or some of the other formats that many other readers support, but all of those are easily converted to ePUB by an application like Calibre.

Once you buy any books at Borders, one big question is always which devices can be used to read them. So far, they have announced free eBook Apps for the Mac, PC, Blackberry, Android, iPhone, and iPad. Books can be synced among devices (including via Bluetooth directly from the Reader to a phone). It looks like you'll be able to buy books from other bookstores, as well, so long as they "support Reader® Mobile Technology from Adobe." The only downside to their bookstore, that I see so far, is that they claim you'll need to use the Borders eBook Desktop App to search or browse for books (which you will presumably also be able to do in stores). I'd much rather use a web based store and download books to my computer for manual transfers. So far, it appears that only PDF's can be manually loaded, while EPUBs will require the desktop application.

I'm not sure I'd like it for a primary reader, but as a secondary reader (for those DRM'd epubs you keep picking up, to read books from Penguin that you can't get for Kindle, currently, or for additional people in the household, for example), it looks like a very good deal (especially at $100 or so less than the other readers that are the same size).

Sleeping Beauty for $2.39

Sleeping Beauty ($7.99 Kindle), by Phillip Margolin, is on sale for $2.39 at KoboBooks. This is a stand-alone title, written four years prior to the currently free Executive Privilege. So far, Kobo is the only one with this price (wasn't the Agency agreement supposed to guarantee the same price in all the stores, according to Steve Jobs?).

Book Description
Author Miles Van Meter is on a book tour to promote his sensational bestseller Sleeping Beauty, a true-crime account of a deeply personal subject: the attack by a serial killer that left his twin sister, Casey, in a coma. Tonight the audience waits to hear Miles discuss recent developments in his sister's case -- unaware that pieces of this complex puzzle of violence, unknown even to the author, are about to be revealed.

Six years earlier, life was much simpler for everyone involved, especially seventeen-year-old Ashley Spencer, a popular high school soccer star. Then one night an intruder entered Ashley's home and murdered her father and her best friend. Traumatized and suffering from a crippling sense of survivor guilt, Ashley is ready to give up on both soccer and life until help comes from an unexpected source -- a scholarship to the Oregon Academy, an elite private school, is extended to her by school dean Casey Van Meter. The school quickly becomes a haven for both Ashley and her mother, Terri. As Ashley regains her sense of self through the school's soccer program, Terri joins a writing group for adults led by Joshua Maxfield, a former literary wunderkind who has disappeared from the bestseller lists since his second book was panned by both critics and fans.

Then tragedy strikes again and Ashley has to run for her life, unaware that the key to her survival is in the one book she's afraid to read -- Sleeping Beauty.

With its blend of dizzying plot twists and thrilling suspense, Sleeping Beauty shows Phillip Margolin at the very top of his form.

Free book (nook) - The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency ($7.99 Kindle), by Alexander Mccall Smith, is available free this week using a coupon you pick up in a physical Barnes and Noble store. Previously, this one was in the Kindle store for $1.99 (and several other stores, as well, including B&N), so many of you may have it, but it's a great deal for those who missed it.

All you have to do is take your nook or ANY device with B&N's eReader software installed (not the fictionwise version; although some are reporting that you don't have to show any device, just ask for the coupon) into the store and get the paper coupon code. Use the code in the B&N online store (using your computer) and the book will either be automatically added or show as a zero amount when added to your account (haven't went to get my coupon code yet, but will later this week).  This is the start of a 5-week campaign to get you into B&N stores; there will be a new free book each week. I'll post future titles as they announce them, both as reminders and to save you a trip if it's one you don't need.

Book Description
This first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” Immediately upon setting up shop in a small storefront in Gaborone, she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency received two Booker Judges’ Special Recommendations and was voted one of the International Books of the Year and the Millennium by the Times Literary Supplement.

Free Audiobook - E.M. Bounds: Man of Prayer

I may have goofed on the genre of Soul Catcher yesterday (thanks all, who posted to let me know), but I'm pretty sure you will all agree that THIS one is in the Christian domain. E.M. Bounds: Man of Prayer by Lyle Dorsett, narrated by Kyle Prue ($15.98 Audio CD) is free to download at ChristianAudio, through May 31st.

The name of E.M. Bounds is familiar to anyone who has an interest in prayer. In a world awash in books that jam the isles of bookstores everywhere, few will even begin to survive the lifetime of the authors, but that is not true of E.M. Bounds. After a century, many of his books are still in print. Their long life is a testimony to the timeliness of the prayer lessons he learned from his own deep Christian spirituality. In view of the popularity of E.M. Bounds writings, it seems incredible that so little of him has been published. To remedy that amazing state of affairs, Lyle W. Dorsett has read every scrap of paper related to Bounds, and the family has made available to him for the first time a private collection of the Bounds correspondence. From that, Dorsett wrote this account of Mr. Bounds' life.

Get your free audio download HERE; enter the coupon code MayPray during checkout. After you finishing your order, you will be asked which format you prefer to download - select MP3 if you want to be able to play the book on your Kindle.

There are also a number of other biographies (Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Edwards, Spurgeon, Moody, Lewis, etc) they have on sale this month, as well as notable philosophers, such as Aristotle, Kierkegaard, and Plato, some of the Armchair Theologian series and back issues of Christian History Magazine.  All only $4.98 until May 31, available HERE.

Sony Reader under $110

Sony Digital Reader Pocket Edition - Silver (PRS300SC)There have been a number of sales recently on the Sony Reader, both for Mother's and Father's Day, but also at Borders in advance of the Kobo Reader being released (they are promised to be in the store by Father's Day). You can pick up a Touchfor $199 and the Pocket Edition for $149 or a bit less at Amazon and many other places (Sony, Best Buy, etc) or order a Kobo for $149. WOOT, however, has a special deal today on the Sony Digital Reader Pocket Edition, which has a 5" screen. Refurbished units in Black, Red or Silver are selling for $109.99, while supplies last (often well under the one-day that their specials are on the front page). If you want one (or two), grab them while you can.

Note that I have no connection with WOOT and have not bought from them previously, but have corresponded with a number of people who have. They are a legit company and seem to be quite good at honoring their deals. The warranty is entirely from Sony (the same as if you bought it there) and covers 90 days. That should be more than enough time to discover any defect.

It looks like Amazon is having video games all day in their Gold Box Deals, starting with the DanceDance Revolution Bundle for $34.99 and a current lightning deal on Karaoke Revolution Bundle for the same price.

  • A wealth of games at your fingertips including those on disc as well as backwards compatibility to all Nintendo GameCube games and most peripherals
  • Built-in Wi-Fi access for easy connection to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection gaming services WiiWare and Virtual Console as well as the Internet

For the non-WII fans out there, there is an awesome deal on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Buy any version and get another Call of Duty title for free. See additional details, HERE. The only reason this deal isn't for the pure WII fan is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 isn't available for the WII; the free titles available on the deal do include the WII (and the DS), though, so there is something for about all the consoles there.
