New Kindle App - Password Manager

Password Manager ($4.99), by Mobigloo, is a new active content App in the Kindle store. Whether you are the type that uses only a couple of passwords (so you can remember them) or that uses many passwords, but write them down on sticky notes at your desk (then can't find the one you want), this app looks like just the thing to let you keep track of your accounts and passwords, while you only have to remember a single master password that only works on your physical Kindle. The only question I have is whether or not you can back up your password data, just in case your Kindle is broken (or stolen), so you can restore it to a new Kindle later on.

New Kindle App - Fast Food Calories - Calorie Counter

Fast Food Calories - Calorie Counter ($1.99) is a new Kindle app from Nanobit. Sure, you could look this info up at home (few restaurants have the info available once you are there), but with this app on your Kindle, you can quickly compare calories for different items or different restaurants, anywhere you happen to be and without looking for a WiFi hotspot. I haven't played with the options to make favorites or create a meal, but a quick glance confirms that the Five Guys Bacon Cheeseburger (920 calories) and large fries (1464 calories!) is a much worse choice than Outback Steakhouse's 6 oz Sirloin Steak (331 calories) and loaded backed potato (505 calories).

New Kindle App - Sticky Notes

Another new Kindle app this morning: Sticky Notes (A Note Taking Tool for Kindle) ($0.99), by Mobigloo. This looks like it will have a pretty nice interface, letting you see the first few lines of each note, as if there were sticky notes actually posted to the face of the Kindle. It's competitor, Notepad (which I own), instead shows a list of the note titles (so, more per page), but you have to open a note to see any of the contents.

There are several apps and one game on sale in the Kindle store for 99 cents right now. The first one is SCRABBLE, by Electronic Arts Inc., which I gladly paid $4.99 for when it first came out. This is a great deal (and I love this game, which you can play with others or against the computer). If you, like me, have already bought this one, then go get the (free) update, as they promise the graphics are improved. The price goes back up at the end of the month.

There is a second Calculator in the Kindle store, this one from 7 Dragons (the first, Easy Calculator, is from Mobigloo); both are selling for 99 cents. If anyone buys them both, let us know how they compare. I already have the one from Mobigloo (and a calculator on my phone), but might consider this one, if there are enough added features. This app will need something to distinguish it before it can knock Easy Calculator out of its #6 slot in the Active Content lists.

Amazon AdMash, a new free app in the Kindle store, lets you vote on the screensavers that those who have purchased a Kindle with Special Offers (KSO) will see. Currently, everyone can "play", including those who have any Active Content capable Kindle (K2.5 and up), not just those who have purchased a KSO. It's a neat concept: let the customers tell you which ads they like best, so that your advertising is more effective. But (here's where the game part is), it can also be used as a force to annoy those with the KSO (the most popular ads win, but the votes aren't restricted to those who will see the ads and prefer those; those who don't like the KSO concept can vote as well, even intentionally picking ads that are less desirable). Of course, to play the game, you have to view the ads (in stereo, yet), but without the ability to take advantage of the deals presented (which means more advertising distribution for the KSO sponsors).

New Kindle App - Calendar Pro

Calendar Pro (A Schedule Tool for Kindle) ($0.99), by Jujuba Software, is a new app for Kindle this morning. There have been a number of Kindle "books" that tried to fill the need for a calendar on Kindle, but this is the first Active Content app in that arena. So far there are two reviews, one of which is 5-star and almost reads as if it was written by an employee of the company that developed the app (it's a glowing review), while the other is one-star and is complaining about not being able to buy the app outside the US. I guess these one-star complainers haven't noticed that the availability isn't up to the developers - none of the Kindle apps are available outside the US and I suspect it's because of US technology export laws, not some unwillingness to allow people to get the apps on the part of Amazon or the developers (some of whom are not even US companies, in the first place, and can't buy their own apps in the Kindle store).

New Kindle App - Notepad

Ever since the original Kindle came out, I've seen people asking for a way to take notes on their Kindle. It looks like the app we've been waiting for has arrived with Notepad (A Note Taking Tool for Kindle) ($0.99), by 7 Dragons. This should prove to be a much better solution that creating a blank document, sending it to your Kindle and then editing the note (usually one per page in the document) you created on it (especially since you had to create as many pages as you thought you might need ahead of time).

There are two new Apps from Digi Ronin Games in the Kindle store, both aimed at improving your kid's math scores. Looking at the pictures, they remind me of some of the Brain Age games for the DS (but without the timers or having to get the touch screen to recognize the numbers you draw with the stylus).

My Yoga Studio ($1.99), by Nickel Buddy, is an interesting looking app/game for the Kindle. I'd say it is just as useful as most yoga videos, after you have run thru them once or twice and are just using them as timers, and a lot more portable. Even better, you can customize the routine (try that with a DVD) and run thru the poses you have chosen (and that fit into the time you have to work out).

If your language skills are a little more advanced (or English isn't your first language), you might want to venture into the world of Foreign Language Kindle eBooks (or, at least foreign to most of those born in Amazon's native land). What you may not have realized is that Amazon has a page to spotlight some of them, making a few of them easier to find. I've pulled a few out that are bargain priced, but my language skills aren't sufficient to give you an opinion of the translations or writing, so be sure to sample first.

Amazon is clearing out the German edition (the Hardcover is $4.95), but English titles in this series from Springer can run from $44 on Kindle to over $55 in print, which is pretty typical for the subject matter and technical level. This one appears to correspond to this English title ($44.77).

Both are language training apps for Spanish (and I'm sure other languages will follow) and fill a gap in content that has been asked for on the Kindle for some time (at least, on the Amazon forums I've been on, for the last couple of years). All that is needed to round these out well is a English-to-Spanish (and vice-versa) dictionary that would let you type in a word and do a quick lookup (are you listening 24/7? This shouldn't be hard to create).

First we had books, then we had games. Now, Amazon has a new type of interactive content in the Kindle store: "an Interactive Adventure", which looks like a cross between a comic book graphic novel and a game I might play on my Nintendo DS (or a graphical version of the interactive fiction games made famous by Zork and Infocom).
