Get $30 off Dress Shoes (KSO)

This offer is only for those with a Kindle with Special Offers:

Save on Select Shoes (Get $30 off when you spend $100 on Women's pumps & Men's dress shoes)

Click on offer, then click on the link on the offer page to receive an email with the promo code. Sign-up for this offer expires on April 29 (it says the 30th on your Kindle, but the promotional page sets the cut-off as the 29th).

You'll get an email (right away), a link to the Special Offer page and a promotion code to enter at checkout. Once you have the promotional code, you have until May 31, 2012 to complete your purchase. Like previous offers, this one requires you to use the full checkout process in order to enter your promotional code. Also, like all Amazon sales that use promotional codes, if you have a gift card balance, you must use it for the payment (if there is not a sufficient balance, then you can pick which credit card or other payment to use).

Limit one offer per customer and per device.

You can add one or more qualifying pair of shoes to get to the $100 minimum and there seem to be a lot to choose from. One the Women's side, it is all dress heels, from what I can see, but I saw loafers in the men's selection (apparently the 31 most popular choice, right now). Personally, I don't buy shoes mail order, but you do have the protection of the return policy at Amazon on these (if you do return them, the promotion amount is subtracted from any return value, of course).

This offer has been extended from it's earlier claim-by date, but is the exact same deal, otherwise, including the expiration date. If you've already claimed the earlier deal, you'll get sent the exact same coupon code this time, so I don't think you'll be able to take advantage of the deal twice.

This offer is only for those with a Kindle with Special Offers (including any Kindle Touch or Kindle Keyboard that opts in to Special Offers, which means you can add the offers, grab this one, then turn them back off!):

Free Audiobook - What Would MacGyver Do

Grab a free audiobook download of What Would MacGyver Do?: True Stories of Improvised Genius in Everyday Life ($10.99), by Brendan Vaughan, over at Tantor Media.
Book Description
A clever collection of true stories celebrating real-life "MacGyverisms"

For anyone who's ever wished they could channel the 1980s action-adventure icon comes this clever collection of forty-five true stories, commemorating the use of improvised genius to solve everyday problems. Inspired by television's Angus MacGyver (played by Richard Dean Anderson), a secret agent who relied on his brains and scientific prowness-not to mention duct tape and a Swiss Army knife-to save the day, the "MacGyverisms" recounted range from the concrete (using Chex Mix to provide taction in an icy parking lot) to the intangible (saving a relationship with the perfect turn of phrase).

Edgy, entertaining, and smirk-to-yourself funny, these masterfully told stories reveal that, with a little luck and a lot of ingenuity, you can "MacGyver" yourself out of virtually any predicament....

According to FatWallet, Walmart will have the $79 Kindle in their April 29th sale flyer, offering a $30 gift card with purchase (not that it will do you any good on books, but you might get a bargain cover at that price). No doubt there will be a number of these given away for Mother's Day, but at an effect price under $50, they are cheap enough to get one for each of the kids to use for reading over the summer (especially since the Harry Potter books automatically download to ever Kindle on your account and you can usually find a good selection of library books for kids, which means fewer trips in the car to get them reading materials).

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is Shell Games ($1.99), the first title in the John Marquez series by Kirk Russell.
Book Description
The discovery of thousands of empty abalone shells and two murdered divers sends Lieutenant John Marquez's poaching investigation in a new and very risky direction. Former DEA agent and now head of a special operations unit of the California Department of Fish and Game, Marquez learns he himself has been targeted as the next victim. Stalking him is Kline, a vicious drug smuggler turned abalone poacher who has a vendetta against Marquez. John Marquez is supposed to protect wildlife, not solve murders, but the only way he can break the multi-million-dollar abalone-smuggling ring, as well as save his own life, is to find and stop Kline. A fast-paced crime novel set along the majestic Northern California coastline, Shell Games introduces a tough, complex, and appealing hero and a masterful new series.

The Misremembered Man ($1.60 / £0.99 UK), by Christina McKenna, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $4.99).
Book Description
Jamie McCloone's early years in a grim, cruel orphanage have left him wary of people and anxious of change. Now in his early forties, he has no dreams of changing his lonely life as a bachelor farmer until his kind-hearted neighbours, Patrick and Rose, decide he is in need of a wife.

Lydia couldn't be more different to Jamie. Rector's daughter and proper schoolteacher, she still lives at home, looking after her aged and demanding mother. She dreams constantly of changing her spinsterly fate, but has no idea how to until a friend suggests she puts an ad in the Lonely Hearts column of the Mid-Ulster Vindicator.

The result is a meeting of absolute opposites: farmer Jamie with his cavalier attitude to personal hygiene and his ignorance of the fairer sex, and Lydia Devine, for whom everything must be folded neatly and laid in its proper place including her ideal man.

The Misremembered Man is a beautifully rendered portrait of life in rural Ireland which charms and delights with its authentic characters and gentle humor. This vivid portrayal of the universal search for love brings with it a darker tale, heartbreaking in its poignancy.

Blood Work ($2.99 Kindle, B&N), the first title in Michael Connelly's Terry McCaleb series, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle.
Book Description
When Graciella Rivers steps onto his boat, ex-FBI agent Terrell McCaleb has no idea he's about to come out of retirement. He's recuperating from a heart transplant and avoiding anything stressful. But when Graciella tells him the way her sister Gloria was murdered, it leaves Terry no choice. Now the man with the new heart vows to take down a predator without a soul. For Gloria's killer shatters every rule that McCaleb ever learned in his years with the Bureau--as McCaleb gets no more second chances at life...and just one shot at the truth.

Pete the Cat ($3.99 Kindle, B&N), by Eric Litwin, is the Nook Daily Find for Families (requires NOOK Color or NOOK Tablet), price matched on Kindle (requires Kindle Fire or Kindle for Android).

Along the way, his shoes change from white to red to blue to brown to WET as we steps in piles of strawberries, blueberries and other big messes! But no matter what color his shoes are are, Pete keeps movin' and groovin' and singing his song...because it's all good.

Today's Deals

Samhain has extended their Earth Day sale another day, as their coupon code EARTH12 wasn't working yesterday.

Romance readers: Carina Press has a new coupon code: SAVE4SPR for $4 a $12 or more order. Valid until April 30, one time use only.

For those of you with a Kindle Fire (or other Android device), you can use the Kobo app (get it from m.getjar.com using you Kindle browser) to read your books, but beware: the app has no method to remove a book from the device, only to delete it from your library entirely. That can be an issue, since it also tries to download every book in your library as soon as you log in (use Menu, Manage Downloads, Pause All to stop it). You can use the Menu/Settings option to Clear all application data, which removes all downloaded books. Then, just be very fast to pause the downloads when it starts up again and only download the books you really want locally. It's a bit more work to get Aldiko working (it has to authorize thru your Adobe ADE account), but once you do, you can use Dropbox to get files into the app and don't have to worry about accidentally deleting your library (use the "SD Card" feature to look for your Dropbox folder, then import into Aldiko if you want it shown on the library page; otherwise, just open from Dropbox). You can also get the Overdrive Console app, which gives you the ability to checkout books and audiobooks from your library easily.

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is Into the Black: Odyssey One ($0.99), by Evan Currie. This edition is published under Amazon's 47North imprint and has a note to let you know that it isn't the same edition as was originally self-published (with a number of errors) that is mentioned in the reviews.
Book Description
This edition of Odyssey One has been completely edited and remastered to correct the typos and content issues that reviewers commented on in the original edition.

Beyond the confines of our small world, far from the glow of our star, lies a galaxy and universe much larger and more varied than anyone on Earth can possibly imagine. For the new NAC spacecraft Odyssey and her crew, the unimaginable facets of this untouched world are about to become reality.

The Odyssey’s maiden voyage is an epic adventure destined to make history. Captain Eric Weston and his crew, pushing past the boundaries of security, encounter horrors, wonders, monsters, and people, all of which will test their resolve, challenge their abilities, and put in sharp relief what is necessary to be a hero.

A first-rate military science fiction epic that combines old-school space opera and modern storytelling, Into the Black: Odyssey One is a riveting, exhilarating adventure with vivid details, rich mythology, and relentless pacing that will leave you breathlessly awaiting book two.

David Foenkinos' Delicacy ($1.60 / £0.99 UK), an Amazon Best Books of the Month selection in February 2012, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $9.99).
Book Description
He was passing by, she kissed him without thinking. Now she wonders whether she did the right thing. But Natalie isn't certain of anything anymore. One minute she was a happily married young woman, successful in her career, and convinced the future was full of promise. But when her husband was run over by a car, her whole world was turned upside down. Years later, still bruised with grief but desperate to move on with her life, she impulsively kisses her colleague Markus. For Natalie, the kiss is just a gratuitous act. For the awkward, unassuming Markus, it is the moment at which he falls hopelessly, helplessly in love. But how will he ever convince such a beautiful, intelligent but confused young woman that he is the man who can bring her back to life?

Ernie's Ark ($0.99 Kindle, B&N), by Monica Wood, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle.
Book Description
Wood's touching collection centers on Abbot Falls, a fictional Maine town economically dependent on a paper mill whose workers are on strike. Limning the intertwined lives of a small number of characters, the stories offer glimpses into the pivotal events of their lives. Ernie, whose retirement fund is tied up by the strike, builds a sculpture that gives meaning to his wife's last days. After being attacked by angry workers, mill owner Henry grows closer to his daughter. Brothers Danny and Timmy, torn apart by Timmy's willingness to scab, finally come to understand each other. Student Francine, who idolizes Jesse Jackson, keeps her father's infidelity a secret to preserve the family. Young Kenny inherits a cabin from his uncle, briefly tries imitating his hero, Thoreau, and grows closer to his sister and stepmother. James, a bad father and worse son, comes to his senses when a woman who once held his mother hostage attends her funeral. These quirky stories reaffirm faith in human resilience, even when adversity brings out the worst in human nature. Bonnie Johnston.

The Very Fairy Princess ($2.95 Kindle/Audible, $2.99 B&N), by Julie Andrews, is the Nook Daily Find for Families, price matched on Kindle (as an audiobook). Note that the Nook edition requires NOOK Color, NOOK Tablet or NOOK Kids for iPad.
Book Description
While her friends and family may not believe in fairies, Geraldine knows, deep down, that she is a VERY fairy princess. From morning to night, Gerry does everything that fairy princesses do: she dresses in her royal attire, practices her flying skills, and she is always on the lookout for problems to solve. But it isn't all twirls and tiaras - as every fairy princess knows, dirty fingernails and scabby knees are just the price you pay for a perfect day!

This new picture book addition to the Julie Andrews Collection features the joyful illustrations of Christine Davenier, and is sure to inspire that sparkly feeling within the hearts of readers young and old.

Save 25% on Skins by DecalGirl (KSO)

This offer for those with a Kindle with Special Offers (which you can turn on and off, of course, on some of the later eInk models

Save 25% on Kindle and Kindle Touch Skins by DecalGirl

Click on the offer, then click on the link on the offer page to receive an email with the promotion code. Sign-up for this offer expires on April 23.

You'll get an email (right away), a link to the Kindle Special Offer page and a promotion code to enter at checkout. Once you have the promotional code, you have until May 23 to complete your purchase.

This offer showed up on all of my Kindles, even the Kindle 3's (with Keyboards). The skins that are on sale, though are only for the last two eInk models, the current "Kindle" (the baby, no keyboard and no touch) and the Kindle Touch. that said, there's nothing to prevent you from buying one for a Mother's day gift - just be sure to get one for the right model Kindle. There are some great patterns to choose from (I have the Abolisher skin on my K3 and it almost looks like it is 3-D).

The skins I checked on had another promotion going, as well (not limited to those with a KSO): Get 25% off on select reading lights, if purchased at the same time (both must be in the cart and ordered using the full checkout process). If you don't have a light in your cover, I can definitely recommend any of the Mighty Bright models (which I've even used on a DX, with it's larger screen). I haven't tried one of the Verso models, but they use a rechargeable battery, which seems like it would be a bit plus (I try to limit the batteries I have to throw away, but some of the lights only use one-use size batteries).

You'll want to shop, early, too. I waited on one of the skin offers last year and it's still sitting in my open orders list (and I suspect I'll never get it). Since I used a KSO coupon code on it, if I cancel, I can't get as good a deal on another, so it just sits there, taunting me every time I check on it.

Free Book - The Bride Found (DF)

The Bride Found ($2.99 Kindle), the second title in The Civil War Brides series by Tracey Jane Jackson, is the final freebie as part of AllRomance's annual countdown to EarthDay. With only a one diamond on the heat index at ARe, I'd say this is a straightforward historical romance (with a bit of time-traveling thrown in) to close out the promotion.
Book Description
Emma Wellington is dealing with the strange disappearance of her sister and brother-in-law, and no one is certain they're even still alive. Saddled with their home drowning in probate, she is forced to take over the settling of their estate.

As she's standing in her sister's library, possibly for the last time, she sees a strange vision and then her world goes black. She awakens to find herself in an old-fashioned carriage house, facing a man in top hat and tails.

Clayton Madden is in Lincoln's War Cabinet and after arriving home one evening, discovers a beautiful woman in the shadows of his carriage house. He is immediately enamored with the tall beauty, despite her strange speech and dress. His intention is to get to know her further, but she disappears in the middle of the night with no explanation as to where she's gone.

Will he find her before a deeper plot threatens her life? Will Clayton and Emma find a love that is everlasting?
Get the free ebook from AllRomance. If you explore on their Hot Deals page, you'll find a few more freebies that aren't part of the countdown (including the genre-bending His Cowboy Werewolf Lover for the LGBT fans and Once Bitten, Forever Burned for those who prefer the more traditional style werewolf/vampire romance).

More Kobo Discounts

More discounts at Kobo.
  • $10/£10.00 off any (non-Agency) book: welcome10us or welcome10ca (one use, each).
  • $5/£5 off any (non-Agency) book: welcome5us or welcome5ca (one use, each).
  • 30% off Baker Books (Christian publisher): Baker30 (Expires April 23)
Here are a couple of ideas for the $10 coupon (less than $1 after coupon):
For those in the UK, there are also a few books priced at £1.00 or less that you might want to pick up, as well. These are from Kobo's 99p and up promo page, just for those in the UK.

90% Off Two Books at Kobo

While they last, there are two new coupon codes working at Kobo for 90% off on any non-Agency book: welcome90us and welcome90ca, in addition to the two 75% off coupons. If you use up all four of those (which you can use on yourself or to send a gift book, so long as it is coupon eligible), then there are also two 50% off coupons: welcome50us and welcome50ca. After those six are gone, it's back the 45% or less coupons on the right sidebar.

Here are a few new books at Kobo, in addition to the earlier suggestions, that I found by cruising thru the new releases and best seller lists. My biggest problem is narrowing down the selection to just two....
You can generally tell if the coupon code will work by looking at the price - if it doesn't end in .99 OR if there are two prices listed (for example: "List price: $28.99; Our price: $17.99"), then it is usually eligible for a coupon code. To use the coupon codes, you click Buy Now, then search for the link that says "Have a gift card or promo code? Use it here" (if it isn't there, it isn't eligible for a coupon), click it, then enter the coupon code and click on Apply. I always double check the summary on the right, which will then show the promo discount and the total at the bottom, where what you will be charged is shown below the Buy Now button.

Keep in mind, all books at Kobo are in EPUB format, with DRM (even self-published titles), so you won't be able to use these on an eInk Kindle. They will work fine on an iPad or Kindle Fire (using an app such as Aldiko), any Android Tablet, the Vox, a Kobo reader, NOOK reader or even a Sony (anything that can be loaded via Adobe ADE, in fact).

Get $2 in MP3's for Free

Amazon is giving everyone (with a US billing address) a $2 MP3 Credit that can be used between now and midnight (PST) April 22, with no strings attached. Click here, then click the yellow Enter Your Code button, enter the code MOMROCKS, and click the "Apply" button. You'll get a green confirmation message if all goes well and can then go shopping in the MP3 store.

In any case, that's two free singles (they are generally 99 cents) or half-price album of the day (they are almost always $3.99-$4.99; today's is Recovering The Satellites by Counting Crows).

A few other ideas (some of which are on April's $5 MP3 Albums page)

75% Off Two Books at Kobo

While they last, there are two coupon codes working at Kobo for 75% off on any non-Agency book: welcome75us and welcome75ca. You can generally tell if the coupon code will work by looking at the price - if it doesn't end in .99 OR if there are two prices listed (for example: "List price: $28.99; Our price: $17.99"), then it is usually eligible for a coupon code. Keep in mind, all books at Kobo are in EPUB format, with DRM (even self-published titles), so you won't be able to use these on an eInk Kindle. Artisanal Gluten-Free Cupcakes: From-Scratch Recipes to Delight Every Cupcake Devotee—Gluten-Free and Otherwise ($10.59 $2.65 w/ coupon), by Kelli Bronski & Peter Bronski. This has great reviews over on Amazon (as does their earlier Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking, also available with coupon at Kobo, or you can wait until the new edition is released at Amazon .. but at a much higher price). I already have the first book, so cupcakes it is, for me!

If you, too, eat gluten free, you can find quite a few choices by just searching for "gluten", including Annalise G. Roberts' Baking Classics and Baking Classics for the Bread Machine (both of which I already had). I also saw The Eat Well Cookbook: Gluten-free and dairy-free recipes for food lovers, which would drop in price from $22.99 to $5.75, but I haven't heard much else about it and it's only in paperback at Amazon (and only 4 reviews).
Book Description
The wait for an entire cookbook of gluten-free cupcakes is over! Kelli and Peter Bronski’s Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking garnered a PW starred review and airtime on The Splendid Table, and within one year of publication has established itself as a category-leading all-purpose gluten-free cookbook. Now the Bronskis bring their accessible but “artisanal” approach to these from-scratch, high-quality homemade cupcakes.

The foundation of these recipes is their intensively developed gluten-free flour blend, which enables home cooks to craft bakery-quality confections, from kid-pleasing favorites like Vanilla Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting or “Peanut Butter Cup” Cakes, to more subtle and surprising treats like Mojito or Poached Pearfection cupcakes. They include tips for adapting the recipes to alternative diets of all kinds, including egg-, dairy-, and refined sugar–free versions. These are cupcakes so good even those who don’t eat gluten-free will love them.

If you are more of a mystery fan, you might want to check out Anne Holt's Hanne Wilhelmsen series, which starts with 1222 ($7.29 $1.83 w/ coupon). Amazon only has an Agency priced edition, but Kobo has two editions (the one I've linked in is coupon eligible). You can also get the Vik and Stubo series titles from Kobo, including the latest, Fear Not, which I don't see on Kindle, at all. There are lots of choices in this genre to choose from, including Harley Rushes In, the sequel to Hound Dog Blues (which is free on Kindle right now, but not at Kobo).
Book Description
From Norway’s bestselling female crime writer comes a suspenseful locked-room mystery set in an isolated hotel in Norway, where guests stranded during a monumental snowstorm start turning up dead.

A TRAIN ON ITS WAY to the northern reaches of Norway derails during a massive blizzard, 1,222 meters above sea level. The passengers abandon the train for a nearby hotel, centuries-old and practically empty, except for the staff. With plenty of food and shelter from the storm, the passengers think they are safe, until one of them is found dead the next morning.

With no sign of rescue, and the storm continuing to rage, retired police inspector Hanne Wilhelmsen is asked to investigate. Paralysed by a bullet lodged in her spine, Hanne has no desire to get involved. But she is slowly coaxed back into her old habits as her curiosity and natural talent for observation force her to take an interest in the passengers and their secrets. When another body turns up, Hanne realizes that time is running out, and she must act fast before panic takes over. Complicating things is the presence of a mysterious guest, who had travelled in a private rail car at the end of the train and was evacuated first to the top floor of the hotel. No one knows who the guest is, or why armed guards are needed, but it is making everyone uneasy. Hanne has her suspicions, but she keeps them to herself.

Trapped in her wheelchair, trapped by the storm, and now trapped with a killer, Hanne must fit the pieces of the puzzle together before the killer strikes again.
If you want to maximize your savings, try doing a search for Bundle, where I discovered the Sally MacKenzie Bundle: The Naked Earl, The Naked Gentleman, The Naked Marquis, The Naked Baron, The Naked Duke, The Naked Viscount & The Naked King ($21.09 $5.27 w/ coupon), which works out to about 75 cents per novel. The bundle is $15.04 at Amazon (which isn't a bad deal, for nearly 2,000 pages of reading material), for those who don't do EPUB. I see a $1.99 pre-order for her upcoming novella, The Duchess of Love, at Amazon, as well (it's geographically restricted at Kobo and not available to those in the US).
Book Description
The Naked Earl
He Took Her By Surprise
When a naked earl climbs through the window into her bedchamber, Lady Elizabeth Runyon does the proper thing: She screams. Loudly. And then ... well, Lizzie has had enough of being proper. She wishes to be bold. Wanton, even. She won't be commanded to put on her nightgown. Just this once, she will be absolutely daring....

She Returned The Favor
Robert Hamilton Earl of Westbrooke has no intention of being tricked into marriage by a detestable female and if he has to flee naked across a rooftop he will. Jolly good there's an open window waiting--as well as an undressed slightly drunk and alluringly beautiful Lady Elizabeth. Oh dear. If they are caught together he might have to marry her. The idea is delicious … and the temptation is irresistible…

The Naked Gentleman
He Couldn't Refuse
John Parker-Roth cannot believe that marriage is necessary for his happiness. He would far rather pursue his interest in horticulture, but if one day he should find a female who shared his passion for flowers--a level-headed, calm sort of female--he might reconsider. Certainly the lovely young woman who has just tumbled into his lap will not do, as she possesses neither of those admirable qualities. Yet Miss Margaret Peterson does have many things in her favor. To begin with, she is a true English rose, blushing a delectable pink. And she is not entirely clothed. Her full mouth begs to be kissed. If only she would not wriggle so ... oh, dear. He cannot ignore the sudden vision of her in his bed, but he must.

What? Is Meg actually asking him to kiss her? Well, well, well. John Parker-Roth is a gentleman, first and foremost. And he cannot turn down a lady's request.

The Naked Marquis
The Man Is Practical
As marriage proposals go, Charles Draysmith's suit is as romantic as the moors in December. Emma Peterson might be only a vicar's daughter, and he the new Marquis of Knightsdale, and perhaps he would rather marry her than endure the marriage mart. But when he suggests how much he'll enjoy securing an heir, well, a lady can only endure so much.

But The Lady Is Passionate
There's something about a woman throwing pottery at a man that piques his interest. Perhaps his proposal lacks grace, Charles thinks. But it does seem a perfect solution. He acquires a wife; his young charges have the mother they so desperately need, and Emma gains security and position. You see? Simple. Practical. Sensib--oh no, not the ceramic dog… He will have to confess the truth to calm her down. And the truth is, he's madly in love…

The Naked Baron
Tell Me What You Want

New to London society and rather … awkward … Lady Grace Belmont would just as soon hide behind the palm trees as dance with a man she doesn't know. But Baron Dawson is on the hunt for a wife. Grace's generous curves and remarkable height do not intimidate him. In fact, it would be more accurate to describe his reaction to the charming newcomer as lust.

Before Grace can so much as gather her thoughts, she finds herself in his arms, committing one shocking impropriety after another. The Baron's devilish attractiveness--to say nothing of his splendid muscles--is simply impossible to resist. Her beloved aunt and chaperone advises patience, but Grace is not about to listen. The handsome baron is whispering such delightful things in her ear…

The Naked Duke
The Surprise Of Her Life
Sophisticated. Scandalous. In fact, Miss Sarah Hamilton, a proper Philadelphian, finds London society altogether shocking. How can it be that she has awakened from her innocent slumber to find herself in bed next to a handsome--and exceedingly naked--man? The laughing onlookers standing in the doorway are no help whatsoever and surely this amorous lunatic cannot be a duke, as he claims. She is compromised--though she most certainly will not marry him!

The Sweetest Moment Of His
James, the Duke of Alford, is enchanted by his unexpected bedmate--and not at all afraid of her pink-cheeked fury. True, the circumstances and place of their meeting are most unusual, but the spirited American who's pummeling him with a pillow is an incomparable beauty. If Sarah will only listen to his perfectly reasonable explanation, James is sure that he can capture her heart...forever.

The Naked Viscount
The Naked Truth…

After eight Seasons in London, Lady Jane Parker-Roth is ready to quit the dull search for a husband in favor of more exciting pursuits. So when she encounters an intruder in her host's townhouse, she's not about to let the scoundrel escape. Until she discovers she's wrestling a viscount--Edmund Smyth, the one noble she wouldn't mind meeting in the dark. And when their struggle shatters a randy statue of the god Pan, even more mischief ensues…

Edmund was indeed searching for evidence of a scandal, but the shocking clues inside the nude statue are far from what he expected. The same can be said of Jane, who shows a talent for interfering in his affairs. And as his quest becomes more than a little improper, he finds the impetuous Lady has a talent for that as well…

The Naked King
Indiscretion Is Just The Beginning…

One night of slight overindulgence-oh, all right, he was drunk-and Stephen Parker-Roth finds he must betroth himself to prevent yet another scandal. But his "intended” is lovely, a redheaded beauty under her horrendous, unfashionable bonnet, and before long, he’s congratulating himself on compromising such an excellent candidate-and anticipating what other naughtiness they’ll get caught at before the wedding…

Lady Anne Marston has long since given up any thought of marriage. That is the price she pays for the mistakes of her past. But one little conversation with a handsome rogue should never have led to a sham engagement. Even if it did end in a rather shocking kiss...in broad daylight…on the front step of London’s premier gossip. Now, trapped between a secret and a lie, Anne must somehow disentangle herself from this charming, maddening man before the truth comes out-or her heart gives in…

Listen to the classics for $0.99 (and earn $10)

This offer is on my Kindle with Special Offers (which you can turn on and off, of course, on some of the later eInk models), but is open to all in the US and Canada (and possibly some other countries, as well). The offer mentions listening on your Kindle, but you can listen to these on your PC or MP3 player, instead (I don't believe you even need a Kindle registered to your Amazon account, at all). You will need an Audible account (which may need to use the same login as your Amazon account), but need not be a subscriber to take advantage of the Deal.

Listen to the classics for only $0.99
  • Click HERE to start shopping. Use the Add to Cart button next to each audiobook you are interested in purchasing. Choose from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. After you are done, click View Cart to go to the next step.
  • For subscribers, be sure to uncheck the box next to Use Credit on each of the items and click on Update, otherwise you'll waste your monthly credits on the offer.
  • If you signed up for all five of the audiobooks, you should see a total of $4.95; click on Next Step.
  • On the next page, confirm your price (and double check that you haven't used any monthly credits), then click on Complete Purchase (note that any existing discounts will be used to cover the cost, first).
  • You'll then see download page for those who want to send the audiobooks directly to a Kindle (via WiFi only); you can ignore it and download the books later from the My Library page or any WiFi Kindle.
  • As a bonus, those who are eligible for the Listening Rewards program will find that these qualify as purchases and buying four or more will result in a $10 "discount" in your account next month! Even if you never listen to the four you buy, you can turn the $3.96 spent into a $10 discount on another audiobook due to this bonus deal.
You won't be able to use that $10 discount on the semi-annual Half-Price Sale that is currently going on, since it ends April 27, but you may want to check it out, as there are over 1,000 audiobooks currently on sale. Although some are much better deals if you use your monthly credits, others are low enough that a monetary purchase is the best choice. Since I still have a $5 discount left after taking advantage of this offer (apparently some sort of anniversary bonus that I found in my account), I'll be trolling thru the choices in search of a new book to listen to in the car.

If you want to give any of the $0.99 sale audiobooks as gifts, you can't do that from the main Offer page. But, if you click on the titles to get the product details page, you'll see that the 99 cent price carries thru and you'll have a green Give as Gift button.

Edit to add: I just noticed that there are still two days left in the contest to win Stephen King's new Dark Tower novel. Thru April 20, purchase one or more books from the list of audiobooks and your name is entered to win The Wind Through the Keyhole (releasing April 24). With a total of 77 books to choose from, you could earn up to 77 chances to win. Winners will be notified April 23. If you were going to buy one of these anyway, you might want to hurry up the purchase to get in on the contest.

KSO details (which can be completely ignored for this offer):
  1. First, turn on your Kindle with Special Offers, click Menu, then View Special Offers.
  2. Find the offer: Listen to a classic on your Kindle for only $0.99. Click on it, then on the link to Email Me This Offer.
  3. You will get an email from Amazon with a link to the Audible Offer page.
  4. Sign up for the offer expires on April 21 (but I can't find any expiration on the offer itself).
  5. Follow the above directions to take advantage of the offer.

Today's Deals

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is Arnie and Jack: Palmer, Nicklaus, and Golf's Greatest Rivalry ($1.99), by Ian O'Connor.
Book Description
Surprisingly, one of sport’s most contentious, complex, and defining clashes played out not in the boxing ring or at the line of scrimmage but on the genteel green fairways of the world’s finest golf courses. Arnie and Jack. Palmer and Nicklaus. Their fifty-year duel, in both the clubhouse and the boardroom, propelled each to the status of American icon and pushed modern golf to the heights and popularity it enjoys today.

Arnie was the cowboy, with rugged good looks, Popeye-like forearms, a flailing swing, and charm enough to win fans worldwide. Jack was scientific, precise, conservative, aloof, even fat and awkward. Ultimately, Nicklaus got the better of Palmer on the course, beating him in major victories 18-7. But Palmer bested Nicklaus almost everywhere else, especially in the hearts of the public and in endorsement dollars. By the end of this page-turning narrative, we see that each man wanted what the other had: Arnold wanted the trophies. Jack wanted the love.

In the tradition of John Feinstein and Mark Frost, Ian O’Connor has written a compelling account of one of the greatest rivalries in sports history.

Margaret was evacuated from Birmingham as a child and has spent years avoiding the pain of her childhood – but finds that you can’t run from the past forever. Sooky, kind and good-natured, has already been through one disastrous marriage and is back at home living with her parents. But being ‘disgraced’ is not easy. Her mother, Meena, refuses to speak to Sooky. At first her silence seems like a punishment, but Sooky gradually realizes it contains emotions which are far more complicated and that her mother may need her help. Meena has spent 20 years trying to fit in with life in Birmingham, and to deal with the conflicts within her between east and west, old ways and new. Charlotte believes that the earl, the only man whose touch leaves her trembling, would never want a woman like her. Weary of her wallflower ways, Charlotte decides that a friendship with the earl just might give her the excitement she desires. But when the "marriage of convenience" takes an unexpected turn, will Charlotte and her wicked earl finally reveal their irresistible, unforgettable love—and delight in a lifetime of passion?

Bitter Water
This is a declaration to the people of Glasgow. The police are useless and corrupt. We are taking it into our own hands: The Glasgow Marshals. For Douglas Brodie, Glasgow's outbreak of murder and mayhem begins simply enough. A typical Saturday night brawl adds a splash of colour to the morning edition of the Gazette. But Brodie's piece receives a hot-blooded reply - the declaration of a new war upon petty crime signed by a group of vigilantes: The Glasgow Marshals. After his own stint at the Front, Brodie counts himself lucky to be back in his home town, paying his way as the local crime reporter. And although the frustrated, demobbed men of Glasgow are taking an eye for an eye, Brodie has some sympathy for their cause. So when a man is murdered, suspicion automatically falls on the Marshals, and the police are quick to agree. But for Brodie, this crime is all wrong. The Marshals stand for justice, not murder. Amid the heated clash of populace and police, a calculated killing has been ignored. Enlisting the help of advocate Samantha Campbell, Brodie begins to investigate the death himself, finding that of course the old saying always holds true: still waters do run deep.

The Hanging Shed
Glasgow, 1946: The last time Douglas Brodie came home it was 1942 and he was a dashing young warrior in a kilt. Now, the war is over but victory's wine has soured and Brodie's back in Scotland to try and save childhood friend Hugh Donovan from the gallows. Everyone thought Donovan was dead, shot down in the war. Perhaps it would have been kinder if he had been killed. The man who returned was unrecognizable: mutilated, horribly burned. Donovan keeps his own company, only venturing out for heroin to deaden the pain of his wounds. When a local boy is found raped and murdered, there is only one suspect...

Donovan claims he's innocent but a mountain of evidence says otherwise. Despite the hideousness of the crime, ex-policeman Brodie feels compelled to try and help his one-time friend. Working with Donovan's advocate Samantha Campbell, Brodie trawls both the mean streets of the Gorbals and the green hills of western Scotland in their search for the truth. What they find is an unholy alliance of church, police and Glasgow's deadliest razor gang, happy to slaughter to protect their dark secrets. As time runs out for the condemned man, and the tally of murdered innocents rises, Brodie reverts to his wartime role as a trained killer. It's them or him.
