Today's Deals and Bargain Books

First up, the following books are all now free for US Kindlers, in addition to those in the UK; all but one is also free from Barnes & Noble and ChristianBook:
For those who have a Kindle with Special Offers, there are only two days left on these two deals (you must already have the coupon codes in-hand, at this point):
For those who shop at Kobo, I've put the coupon codes that I know about in a table at the left of the page (just below the free MP3 of the day that I select). Fictionwise's 55% off coupon code, 090311, is still working, but could expire at any time. They've finally updated their new selections for the week; they were behind due to the holiday. Their Secure eReader works with the eReader app (most platforms) and the original nook. I found a new Susan Krinard (Code of the Wolf) that I don't have and one that I have only as a galley for review (Heather Graham's Sacred Evil), just on a quick look-thru. Either is $3.06 with coupon (if you can use FW's format), but checking at Amazon, I found that Sacred Evil is being discounted to $3.99 there. FW's multiformat works with all ereaders and it looks like the November fiction magazines are now out, so I've definitely added those to my order.

The End of America ($2.79), by Naomi Wolf, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
In a stunning indictment of the Bush administration and Congress, best-selling author Naomi Wolf lays out her case for saving American democracy. In authoritative research and documentation Wolf explains how events of the last six years parallel steps taken in the early years of the 20th century's worst dictatorships such as Germany, Russia, China, and Chile. The book cuts across political parties and ideologies and speaks directly to those among us who are concerned about the ever-tightening noose being placed around our liberties. In this timely call to arms, Naomi Wolf compels us to face the way our free America is under assault. She warns us with the straight-to-fellow-citizens urgency of one of Thomas Paines revolutionary pamphlets that we have little time to lose if our children are to live in real freedom. Recent history has profound lessons for us in the U.S. today about how fascist, totalitarian, and other repressive leaders seize and maintain power, especially in what were once democracies. The secret is that these leaders all tend to take very similar, parallel steps. The Founders of this nation were so deeply familiar with tyranny and the habits and practices of tyrants that they set up our checks and balances precisely out of fear of what is unfolding today. We are seeing these same kinds of tactics now closing down freedoms in America, turning our nation into something that in the near future could be quite other than the open society in which we grew up and learned to love liberty, states Wolf. Wolf is taking her message directly to the American people in the most accessible form and as part of a large national campaign to reach out to ordinary Americans about the dangers we face today. This includes a lecture and speaking tour, and being part of the nascent American Freedom Campaign, a grassroots effort to ensure that presidential candidates pledge to uphold the constitution and protect our liberties from further erosion. The End of America will shock, enrage, and motivatespurring us to act, as the Founders would have counted on us to do in a time such as this, as rebels and patriotsto save our liberty and defend our nation.

The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the Universe ($0.99), from DENON Classics, is a good deal on music to read by (whether on your Kindle or elsewhere). There is an issue with the samples (track 2, for example, as random clicks that are audible), but according to the comments, that has been cleared up in the actual downloads. It's not 99 tracks, but you still get over 2 hours of hand-selected music for under a buck (and DENON is well known in music circles). This is a ONE DAY ONLY sale, so grab it while you can.

The Judas Strain with Bonus Material ($1.99 pre-order Kindle, B&N), the fourth in the Sigma Force series by James Rollins, is one that any fan will want to add to their library. If you want to sample first, you can do that with the full price edition; just don't wait too long on the Bonus Edition, as these generally disappear from the Kindle catalog shortly after they are published (I've previously managed to snag one of these for Map of Bones and Black Order; both are now gone from Kindle and the B&N stores, but Black Order with Bonus Material is still $1.99 from Kobo. There's currently also a short story in this series available, The Skeleton Key (Kindle, B&N), for 99 cents.
Book Description
From the depths of the Indian Ocean, a horrific plague has arisen to devastate humankind—unknown, unstoppable . . . and merely a harbinger of the doom that is to follow.

Operatives of the shadowy covert organization Sigma Force, Dr. Lisa Cummings and Monk Kokkalis search for answers to the bizarre affliction aboard a cruise liner transformed into a makeshift hospital. But a sudden and savage attack by terrorist hijackers turns the mercy ship into a floating bio-weapons lab.

Time is an enemy as a worldwide pandemic grows rapidly out of control. As the seconds tick closer to doomsday, Sigma’s commander, Gray Pierce, must join forces with the beautiful assassin who tried to kill him—following the trail of the most fabled explorer in history into the terrifying heart of an astonishing mystery buried deep in antiquity and in humanity’s genetic code.

Also included in this edition is an excerpt from The Devil Colony, featuring Sigma Force.

If you missed Angel Fire ($0.99), by Lisa Unger (originally released under Lisa Miscione), the last time it was marked down, this is your second chance to grab the start of the Lydia Strong series at a bargain price.
Book Description
The childhood murder of Lydia Strong’s mother has turned her into a woman obsessed with bringing brutal killers to justice. The reclusive, bestselling true-crime writer and investigative consultant has made a life out of chasing monsters. And her powerful intuitions rarely fail her.

When three adults—loners, drifters—go missing, no one seems to notice except for Lydia. Enlisting the help of her friend, former FBI agent Jeffrey Mark, Lydia starts an investigation of her own. But when someone raises the stakes and goes after Lydia—just as fifteen years ago when she put the FBI on the trail of her mother’s killer—the real hunt begins.

Harry Connolly's Child of Fire ($0.99) is also still (again?) greatly discounted. The first in the Twenty Palaces series, I don't expect it to remain at this price for much longer. The second in the series, Game of Cages, is down to $5.99, not a great discount, but better than the usual $7.99.
Book Description
Ray Lilly is living on borrowed time. He’s the driver for Annalise Powliss, a high-ranking member of the Twenty Palace Society, a group of sorcerers devoted to hunting down and executing rogue magicians. But because Ray betrayed her once, Annalise is looking for an excuse to kill him–or let someone else do the job.

Unfortunately for both of them, Annalise’s next mission goes wrong, leaving her critically injured. With the little magic he controls, Ray must complete her assignment alone. Not only does he have to stop a sorcerer who’s sacrificing dozens of innocent lives in exchange for supernatural power, he must find–and destroy–the source of that inhuman magic.

The Black Ice ($1.99), by Michael Connelly, is the second in the Harry Bosch series. If you picked up The Black Echo when it was 99 cents in July, now is the time to get next in the series.
Book Description
Narcotics officer Cal Moore's orders were to look into the city's latest drug killing. Instead, he ends up in a motel room with a fatal bullet wound to the head and a suicide note stuffed in his back pocket. Working the case, LAPD detective Harry Bosch is reminded of the primal police rule he learned long ago: Don't look for the facts, but the glue that holds them together. Soon Harry's making some very dangerous connections, starting with a dead cop and leading to a bloody string of murders that wind from Hollywood Boulevard to the back alleys south of the border. Now this battle-scarred veteran will find himself in the center of a complex and deadly game-one in which he may be the next and likeliest victim.

Blue Bloods ($2.69), by Melissa De La Cruz, is the start of her vampire series for young adults/teens. The fourth in the series, The Van Alen Legacy, is still marked down to $4.24.
Book Description
Schuyler Van Alen is confused about what is happening to her. Her veins are starting to turn blue, and she’s starting to crave raw meat. Soon, her world is thrust into an intricate maze of secret societies and bitter intrigue. Schuyler has never been a part of the trendy crowd at her prestigious New York private school. Now, all of a sudden, Jack Force, the most popular guy in school, is showing an interest in her. And when one of the popular girls is found dead, Schuyler and Jack are determined to get to the bottom of it.

Schuyler wants to find out the secrets of the mysterious Blue Bloods. But is she putting herself in danger? Melissa de la Cruz’s vampire mythology, set against the glitzy backdrop of New York City, is a juicy and intoxicating read.

Lost Cargo ($2.99 Kindle), by Hollister Ann Grant, is free over on Smashwords. It looks interesting and the few reviews are promising and has a dog (and the extra-galactic equivalent, apparently), so I'd say it's worth a download.
Book Description
When college student Travis Maguire chases his dog into Washington, D.C.’s Rock Creek Park wilderness, he finds more than the dog -- he discovers a camera with photos of a mysterious black triangular aircraft that crashed in the woods. Obsessed with the photos and the unknown photographer, Travis searches for the wreck, accompanied by two friends: beautiful Lexie Collins, who’s convinced a UFO came down outside the city, and her brother Burke, who argues that the photos must be fake. Their lives take an unimaginable turn when they encounter a six-eyed galactic animal control officer and the murderous creature he was transporting. Lost Cargo is set in the shadows of Washington’s famous streets, with wicked twists and turns and unforgettable aliens.

Today's Deals and Bargain Books

First, a couple of format updates on free books:
For today's bargain books, I've included a link to B&N or Kobo, if the price is closely matched. Don't forget to check the coupon code list at left for Kobo's titles, as some of them are eligible, which often makes them the best deal for readers that use EPUB.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy ($1.99), by Eric Metaxas, a biography published by Christian publisher Thomas Nelson, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
From the New York Times bestselling author of Amazing Grace, a groundbreaking biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the greatest heroes of the twentieth century, the man who stood up to Hitler.

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism.

After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double-agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Fuhrer, and was hanged in Flossenberg concentration camp at age 39. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the 20th century.

Bonhoeffer presents a profoundly orthodox Christian theologian whose faith led him to boldly confront the greatest evil of the 20th century, and uncovers never-before-revealed facts, including the story of his passionate romance.

If the first title is one that grabbed you (or even if it doesn't), be sure to check out Auschwitz, by Miklos Nyiszli, Bruno Bettelheim (foreword), Tibere Kremer (Translator) and Richard Seaver (Translator), currently marked down to $1.99 on Kindle and at B&N and Kobo.
Book Description
Auschwitz was one of the first books to bring the full horror of the Nazi death camps to the American public; this is, as the New York Review of Books said, "the best brief account of the Auschwitz experience available."When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Death"--Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also served as physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked exclusively in the crematoriums and were routinely executed after four months. Miraculously, Nyiszli survived to give this horrifying and sobering account.

Auschwitz was one of the first books to bring the full horror of the Nazi death camps to the American public. Although much has since been written about the Holocaust, this eyewitness account remains, as the New York Review of Bookssaid in 1987, "the best brief account of the Auschwitz experience available." Of Bruno Bettelheim’s famous foreword Neal Ascherson has written, "Its eloquence and outrage must guarantee it a permanent place in Jewish historiography."

The Craft of Research, Third Edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing) ($3.23), by Wayne C. Booth, Gregory G. Colomb and Joseph M. Williams, belongs in every student's, researcher's and writer's library. If you already have a well-worn copy, you need to grab this replacement, which has been updated to deal with the internet age.
Book Description
With more than 400,000 copies now in print, The Craft of Research is the unrivaled resource for researchers at every level, from first-year undergraduates to research reporters at corporations and government offices.

Seasoned researchers and educators Gregory G. Colomb and Joseph M. Williams present an updated third edition of their classic handbook, whose first and second editions were written in collaboration with the late Wayne C. Booth. The Craft of Research explains how to build an argument that motivates readers to accept a claim; how to anticipate the reservations of readers and to respond to them appropriately; and how to create introductions and conclusions that answer that most demanding question, “So what?”

The third edition includes an expanded discussion of the essential early stages of a research task: planning and drafting a paper. The authors have revised and fully updated their section on electronic research, emphasizing the need to distinguish between trustworthy sources (such as those found in libraries) and less reliable sources found with a quick Web search. A chapter on warrants has also been thoroughly reviewed to make this difficult subject easier for researchers

Throughout, the authors have preserved the amiable tone, the reliable voice, and the sense of directness that have made this book indispensable for anyone undertaking a research project.

If you picked up The Score, by Richard Stark (Donald E. Westlake), which is still free in most stores, you'll definitely want to look at the trio of books in the same series that are currently marked down to $2.66.

The Hunter is the first in the Parker series; you may recognize it better from the movie title, though: 1967's hit Point Blank or the remake/re-adaptation 30 years later, Payback.
You probably haven’t ever noticed them. But they’ve noticed you. They notice everything. That’s their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers’ work habits, the positions of the security guards. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack.

They’re thieves. Heisters, to be precise. They’re pros, and Parker is far and away the best of them. If you’re planning a job, you want him in. Tough, smart, hardworking, and relentlessly focused on his trade, he is the heister’s heister, the robber’s robber, the heavy’s heavy. You don’t want to cross him, and you don’t want to get in his way, because he’ll stop at nothing to get what he’s after.

Parker, the ruthless antihero of Richard Stark’s eponymous mystery novels, is one of the most unforgettable characters in hardboiled noir. Lauded by critics for his taut realism, unapologetic amorality, and razor-sharp prose-style—and adored by fans who turn each intoxicating page with increasing urgency—Stark is a master of crime writing, his books as influential as any in the genre. The University of Chicago Press has embarked on a project to return the early volumes of this series to print for a new generation of readers to discover—and become addicted to.

In The Hunter, the first volume in the series, Parker roars into New York City, seeking revenge on the woman who betrayed him and on the man who took his money, stealing and scamming his way to redemption.
The Man with the Getaway Face, the second in the series, was also released under the title The Steel Hit.
Parker goes under the knife in The Man with the Getaway Face, changing his face to escape the mob and a contract on his life. Along the way he scores his biggest heist yet: an armored car in New Jersey, stuffed with cash.
The Mourner, the fourth in the series, comes immediately before The Score.
The Mourner is a story of convergence—of cultures and of guys with guns. Hot on the trail of a statue stolen from a fifteenth-century French tomb, Parker enters a world of eccentric art collectors, greedy foreign officials, and shady KGB agents. Next, Parker works with a group of professional con men in The Score on his biggest job yet—robbing an entire town in North Dakota. In The Jugger, Parker travels to Nebraska to help out a geriatric safecracker who knows too many of his criminal secrets. By the time he arrives, the safecracker is dead and Parker’s skeletons are on the verge of escaping from their closet—unless Parker resorts to lethal measures.

Don't Believe Your Lying Eyes ($3.99) is the third title in the Darryl Billups Mystery series by Blair S. Walker. The first two were featured in a Kindle Deal of the Day last week, so you'll want to grab this companion volume before it goes back up in price.
Book Description
... appearances can be deceiving . . . and just as deadly.

Every two months for the last seventeen years, the payments for unit number nine at a storage facility in West Baltimore have arrived without fail. After the money orders mysteriously stop, a grisly surprise is found inside the abandoned space: the mummified remains of black socialite Adrienne Hudson. The victim's husband was none other than Charles Hudson, one of Baltimore's greatest business leaders, who has since remarried a much younger woman. Adrienne's disappearance during an apparent robbery in 1984 shocked and saddened the people of Baltimore. Now her murder has reopened old wounds, and cast a shadow of suspicion on a pillar of the community.

Into this lurid state of affairs steps Baltimore Herald reporter Darryl Billups, who is set to marry his long-time, live-in girlfriend, Yolanda, and become an instant father to her wonderful four-year old son. Nervous about the upcoming wedding after thirty-three years of bachelorhood, he welcomes any distraction and eagerly throws himself into the sordid case.

Yet after receiving sensitive inside information from a contact in the police department, Darryl discovers there's much more to the story than meets the eye. Maneuvering through a world of lies and deception, privilege and power, Darryl uncovers secrets and bombshells which will lead him to an unlikely suspect-one who will shake the foundations of a proud city . . . and one that just may cost Darryl his life.

Blood Safari ($4.62 Kindle; $4.99 B&N, Kobo) is a stand-alone title by Deon Meyer, whose Thirteen Hours was a recent Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
Published to rave reviews around the world, Blood Safari is a harrowing new novel from acclaimed writer Deon Meyer. Like the best international mystery and thriller writers, Meyer is an expert storyteller whose wickedly fast narratives reveal the heart of his enthralling country. In Blood Safari, Emma Le Roux, a beautiful young woman, sees her brother named on the Cape Town news as the prime suspect in the killing of four poachers and a witch doctor. But it can’t be possible: he disappeared twenty years ago in Kruger National Park and is believed to be dead. Emma tries to find out more but is attacked and barely escapes. So she hires Lemmer, a personal security expert, and sets out into the Lowveld in search of the truth. A complicated man with a dishonorable past, Lemmer just wants to do his job and avoid getting personally involved. Thirteen Hours ($1.99), by Deon Meyer, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
Internationally acclaimed, prize-winning thriller writer Deon Meyer has been heralded as the “King of South African Crime.” In Thirteen Hours, morning dawns in Cape Town, and for homicide detective Benny Griessel it promises to be a very trying day. A teenage girl’s body has been found on the street, her throat cut. She was an American—a PR nightmare in the #1 tourist destination in South Africa. And she wasn’t alone. Somewhere in Cape Town her friend, Rachel Anderson, an innocent American, is hopefully still alive.

On the run from the first page of Thirteen Hours, Rachel is terrified, unsure where to turn in the unknown city. Detective Griessel races against the clock, trying to bring her home safe and solve the murder of her friend in a single day. Meanwhile, he gets pulled into a second case, the murder of a South African music executive. Griessel’s been sober for nearly six months—156 days. But day 157 is going to be tough. A #1 best seller in South Africa and a finalist for the CWA International Dagger, Thirteen Hours is an atmospheric, intensely gripping novel from a master storyteller.

Heart of a Knight ($0.99 Kindle), by Barbara Samuel, is marked down at Amazon and free on Smashwords. This backlist title was first published with HarperCollins in 1997, and won a RITA for Best Historical Romance.
Book Description
NO HEART EVER BEAT SO NOBLE—NOR SO STRONG
Britain, 1351. After an arduous exile to flee the darkness and danger sweeping her lands, Lady Elizabeth D’Auvers returns home to Woodell Castle, yearning only for her looms and her quiet life. To her astonishment, she finds the castle and farmlands thriving, thanks to Lord Thomas of Roxburgh, a knight errant whose size and strength offer protection to Elizabeth’s castle and its people.

Lord Thomas’s warm gaze makes Elizabeth’s flesh burn with unaccustomed fire, and her defenses crumble, leaving her heart as vulnerable as her trembling body. Yet chilling thoughts trouble her mind. For there is something dark and mysterious about this man—a secret that makes him as forbidden to desire as he is impossible to resist.

All but one of Anne Frasier's backlist (including those released as Theresa Weir) are free on Amazon. They were free on Smashwords for a while, but she's removed the books from there, so I'd grab these before they go back up in price. The only title that didn't drop is Before I Wake, which at $3.99 is still a good deal (especially on a title formerly published by Penguin, as they tend to start at about $8 for backlist titles). ETA: Over at B&N, you can also find these free (for now) - I just saw the prices go up on Smashwords, so I expect prices of $3.99 each within a few days.

Book Description
If you are a fan of Fringe, you might like Before I Wake.

Caught between dreams and reality... A madman murdered her family, leaving her a shadow of the woman she once was. So one-time criminal profiler Arden Davis did the only thing she could: She volunteered for an experiment to wipe out the horrific memories that haunted her every waking moment. But the experiment wasn’t quite the success they predicted—and now Arden is left sifting through random memories, trying to distinguish dreams from reality. Then one night, Special Agent Nathan Fury shows up on her doorstep with an urgent appeal for help. She awakes to a living nightmare... The murderer, it turns out, is still on the streets. This time, Arden will risk everything—even her own sanity—to lure the killer out of hiding. Even if it means the killer is closer than she thought. Even if she herself becomes the number-one suspect…

Today's Deals

Two additional books from the bonanza on the first have turned up free on nook - I've updated the corrections list.

Alison Wonderland ($0.99), by Helen Smith, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. It's been discounted to $3.99 quite a bit lately, but this is about the lowest price I've seen on this book (full disclosure, I have a review copy in hand, but haven't read it, yet).
Book Description
After her husband leaves her for another woman, twentysomething Londoner Alison Temple impulsively applies for a job at the very P.I. firm she hired to trap her philandering ex. She hopes it will be the change of scene she so desperately needs to move on with her shattered life. At the all-female Fitzgerald’s Bureau of Investigation, she spends her days tracking lost objects and her nights shadowing unfaithful husbands. But no matter what the case, none of her clients can compare to the fascinating characters in her personal life. There’s her boss, the estimable and tidy Mrs. Fitzgerald; Taron, Alison’s eccentric best friend, who claims her mother is a witch; Jeff, her love-struck, poetry-writing neighbor; and—last but not least—her psychic postman. Her relationships with them all become entangled when she joins Taron for a road trip to the seaside and stumbles into a misadventure of epic proportions! Clever, quirky, and infused with just a hint of magic, this humorous literary novel introduces a memorable heroine struggling with the everyday complexities of modern life.

The Name of this Book Is Secret ($0.99), by Pseudonymous Bosch, is the spotlight book this month at Barnes & Noble (and price matched on Kindle). As you might guess from the description, this is a children's book, but from the reviews at Amazon, the audience ranges from age 6 to adults.
Book Description
Warning: this description has not been authorized by Pseudonymous Bosch. As much as he'd love to sing the praises of his book (he is very vain), he wouldn't want you to hear about his brave 11-year old heroes, Cass and Max-Ernest. Or about how a mysterious box of vials, the Symphony of Smells, sends them on the trail of a magician who has vanished under strange (and stinky) circumstances. And he certainly wouldn't want you to know about the hair-raising adventures that follow and the nefarious villains they face. You see, not only is the name of this book secret, the story inside is, too. For it concerns a secret. A Big Secret.

The Getaway is a free novella by Sonya Bateman, that ties in to her urban fantasy djinn series, published by Simon and Schuster.
Book Description
Getaway driver Jazz wasn't exactly thrilled when the thief Gavyn Donatti, her ex-partner -- and the unwitting father of her son -- waltzed back into her life, and then dragged her into the middle of a magical war between a bunch of ancient genies, who'd been hiding among humans for centuries. And as if that wasn't enough, it turned out these djinn didn't choose Donatti for his charm... he's related to them, and has a little magic of his own.

Now that they've vanquished their enemies and Jazz has more or less accepted Donatti into her life, he's talked her into taking a weekend trip for her birthday. A "romantic" getaway in a rustic cabin. Unfortunately, Donatti's map-reading skills aren't up to par, and neither is his car -- because first they get lost, and then they wreck on some unnamed mountain road.

When Jazz comes to, Donatti is MIA and she's been abducted by a smooth-talking stranger who is more than he appears. There's something magical, and dangerous, going on -- and for once, it's not Donatti's fault.

The Donzerly Light, by Ryne Douglas Pearson, is another free indie book on Kindle. The author is the one that caught my eye, this time, and he also has an omnibus, The Art Jefferson Collection, that's currently $6.95 and includes Simple Simon, which was the basis of the movie Mercury Rising.
Book Description
If evil shook your hand, would you know it?

With a destitute childhood and the tragic loss of his parents a distant but constant memory, Jay Grady has come to Wall Street to make a name, and a fortune, for himself. But the success he'd imagined is frustratingly elusive.

Until he meets the bum. An enigmatic transient who occupies a Manhattan corner, offering puzzling morsels of wisdom on a sign he changes daily. Drawn to the bum one day by a familiar snippet on his sign, Jay gives the man some spare change.

What he gets in return shakes him to his core.

Suddenly gifted with some power of prescience, Jay becomes the darling of Wall Street, picking winning stocks as if he can glimpse the future.

Or shape it.

But the dark side of this gift reveals itself as a curse when Jay tries to turn away from what he's been given, leading the bum to reach into his life with murderous results. Running from the horrific reality that his power now unleashes, Jay finds his flight coming full circle as he must face the man, the thing, that set him on this path.

A number of indie authors have banded together to market an Indie Book Blowout weekend - all of the following books are marked down to 99 cents over the weekend. I've arranged them by genre and will just show the covers, as there are so many. I've actually stumbled upon a few additional titles that are marked down for the weekend, but are not mentioned on the official page, so I've included them here on the first tab.

Today's Deals and Bargain Books

First, Powerful Prayers for Troubled Times, is now free for Kindle, for those of you that don't want to mess with converting it from ChristianBook.

Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000 ($0.99), by L. Ron Hubbard, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. You probably hated the movie, but if you read SciFi, you need to read the the book. This is an updated edition and I paid more than this earlier this year, to replace my battered paper edition.
Book Description
In the year 3000, man is an endangered species at the mercy of a space-plundering race of nine-foot-tall, gas-breathing alien conquerors from the planet Psychlo. Against terrific odds, the remnants of humanity have engaged in a desperate and grueling battle for Earth against the alien oppressors--and so begins this epic adventure that surges across the Earth and explosively ignites across the galaxies of an alien empire ... to become the gripping tale that has kept countless readers enthralled for the past two decades.

I Love the Earl ($0.99), by Caroline Linden, is currently discounted by HarperCollins. The author also has a self-published short story at the same price, that you may also want to sample: Like None Other.
Book Description
A single lady in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a suitor....

Margaret de Lacey has accepted her unmarried state with dignity, if not delight. She had no suitors when she was young and starry-eyed, though regrettably poor, and it’s unlikely any man will court her now that she’s older, wiser, and still just as penniless. Until, that is, her brother unexpectedly inherits the dukedom of Durham and settles an enormous dowry on her, making her the most eligible heiress in town.

No gentleman in London is more in need of a wealthy bride than Rhys Corwen, Earl of Dowling. He contrives an introduction to Margaret because of her dowry, but she swiftly sets him right: no fortune hunter will win her heart or her hand. Far from put off, Rhys is intrigued. Interested. Entranced. And soon the only thing he needs more than Margaret’s fortune . . . is her love.

Mistborn: The Final Empire ($2.99), by Brandon Sanderson, is the first in the Mistborn series. Definitely a recommended read, but check your library to see if you happened to get it free when Tor gave away copies in 2008, under a different ASIN.
Book Description
Brandon Sanderson, fantasy's newest master tale spinner, author of the acclaimed debut Elantris, dares to turn a genre on its head by asking a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails? What kind of world results when the Dark Lord is in charge? The answer will be found in the Mistborn Trilogy, a saga of surprises and magical martial-arts action that begins in Mistborn.

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison. Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn. A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark.

Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge. Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot.

But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life. Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life. Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it. She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed.

Readers of Elantris thought they'd discovered someone special in Brandon Sanderson. Mistborn proves they were right.

The Rogue Agent: The Accidental Sorcerer, Witches Incorporated, Wizard Squared ($9.99), by K.E. Mills, is this month's Orbital Book Drop and works out to $3.33/title, for those that haven't started on this trilogy (I already have the first, but it's still $5/title, which is better than the $7.99 standalone price).
Book Description
BOOK 1: THE ACCIDENTAL SORCERER
Gerald Dunwoody is a wizard. Just not a particularly good one. He's blown up a factory, lost his job, and there's a chance that he's not really a Third Grade wizard after all. So it's off to New Ottosland to be the new Court Wizard for King Lional.

It's a shame that King Lional isn't the vain, self-centered young man he appeared to be. With a Princess in danger, a talking bird who can't stay out of trouble, and a kingdom to save, Gerald soon suspects that he might be out of his depth. And if he can't keep this job, how will he ever become the wizard he was destined to be...

BOOK 2: WITCHES INCORPORATED
It's a case of espionage, skullduggery and serious unpleasantness

And it's also Gerald's first official government assignment. He's hunting down a deadly saboteur, and time is quickly running out. Old enemies and new combine forces to thwart him. Once again, innocent lives are on the line. He needs his friends. He can't do this alone.

But Princess Melissande and Reg have troubles of their own. With the help of Monk Markham's brilliant, beautiful sister, they've opened a one-stop-shop witching locum agency, where magical problems are solved for a price. Problem is, the girls are struggling to keep the business afloat. Things are looking grim for Witches Incorporated - and that's before they accidentally cross paths with Gerald's saboteur.

Suddenly everybody's lives are on the line and Gerald realizes, too late, that there's a reason government agents aren't supposed to have friends...

BOOK 3: Wizard Squared
When the staff of Witches Incorporated receive a visitor from an alternate reality, they are shocked to learn that life in the parallel world next door is anything but a bed of roses... and it's all because of Gerald Dunwoody.

At a crucial moment in time, their Gerald turned left... but the alternate reality Gerald turned right. Now the parallel world next door is in the grip of terror, staring down the barrel of a thaumaturgical war -- a war that threatens to spill across the dimensions and plunge every reality into a nightmare.

The only person who can stop a rogue wizard gone mad is another rogue wizard. But what do you do when another rogue wizard can't be found?

The Wake of Forgiveness ($2.99), by Bruce Machart
Book Description
On a moonless Texas night in 1895, an ambitious young landowner suffers the loss of “the only woman he’s ever been fond of” when his wife dies during childbirth with the couple’s fourth boy, Karel. From an early age Karel proves so talented on horseback that his father enlists him to ride in acreage-staked horseraces against his neighbors. But Karel is forever haunted by thoughts of the mother he never knew, by the bloodshot blame in his father’s eyes, and permanently marked by the yoke he and his brothers are forced to wear to plow the family fields. Confident only in the saddle, Karel is certain that the horse “wants the whip the same way he wants his pop’s strap . . . the closest he ever gets to his father’s touch.” In the winter of 1910, Karel rides in the ultimate high-stakes race against a powerful Spanish patriarch and his alluring daughters. Hanging in the balance are his father’s fortune, his brother’s futures, and his own fate. Fourteen years later, with the stake of the race still driven hard between him and his brothers, Karel is finally forced to dress the wounds of his past and to salvage the tattered fabric of his family.

Reminiscent of Kent Haruf’s portrayals of hope amidst human heartbreak and Cormac McCarthy’s finely hewn evocations of the American Southwest, Bruce Machart’s striking debut is as well wrought as it is riveting. It compels us to consider the inescapable connections between sons and their mothers, between landscape and family, and between remembrance and redemption.

Dark Kill ($1.24), by Todhunter Ballard
Book Description
Two brothers who are joint owners of the largest cattle ranch in Colorado are headed down a disastrous road when their loyalties are pushed beyond the limit.

The Eye of the World ($2.99), the first title in the The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, is another recommended read (and a lot easier on the Kindle, as this is 832 pages in print).
Book Description
The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

Halfway to the Grave with Bonus Material ($1.99), the first in the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost, is one I ordered immediately, as this will complete this series for me (and let me retire the paper book). It's a pre-order, so if you want to check a sample first, get it from the older edition, but come back here to make sure you one-click the correct one.
Book Description
For a limited time, discover Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series with Halfway to the Grave. Plus, as a bonus, you will receive exclusive material, including deleted scenes and excerpts!

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn't have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Gardens of the Moon ($2.99), the first in The Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson, was on sale earlier, then went back up in price and has dropped again for an unknown period of time.
Book Description
The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins.

For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze.

However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand...

Conceived and written on a panoramic scale, Gardens of the Moon is epic fantasy of the highest order--an enthralling adventure by an outstanding new voice.

Let the Right One In - with Bonus Content ($4.99), by John Ajvide Lindqvist and Ebba Segerberg (Translator), was originally titled Let Me In, winning numerous awards throughout Europe; the title change was made for the Tribeca Film Festival adaptation, where it took Top Honors. Oddly enough, there are two imprints (same publisher) for this title in the US and you can also get a Let Me In (Movie Tie-in) - with Bonus Content at the same price - I'm going to sample both, to see which is better formatted/translated or if it is just a cover and title change. The author's second novel, Handling the Undead, moves on to zombies, while his upcoming Harbor is a bit more mysterious in what is behind the disappearances.

ETA: OK, I sampled both and I think that Let Me In (Movie Tie-in) - with Bonus Content wins in the formatting department. The quotes on the chapter start pages are placed better and it also includes the copyright and translation info. I really didn't see any reference in either edition to any added content that ties it to the movie, so grab either one on that count.

Book Description
It is autumn 1981 when the inconceivable comes to Blackeberg, a suburb in Sweden. The body of a teenage boy is found, emptied of blood, the murder rumored to be part of a ritual killing. Twelve-year-old Oskar is personally hoping that revenge has come at long last---revenge for the bullying he endures at school, day after day.
But the murder is not the most important thing on his mind. A new girl has moved in next door---a girl who has never seen a Rubik’s Cube before, but who can solve it at once. There is something wrong with her, though, something odd. And she only comes out at night. . . .

Sweeping top honors at film festivals all over the globe, director Tomas Alfredsson’s film of Let the Right One In has received the same kind of spectacular raves that have been lavished on the book. American readers of vampire fiction will be thrilled!

Abarat with Bonus Material ($1.99), by Clive Barker, is another pre-order that you can sample with an older edition. Abarat is the start of a very popular young teen series and this bonus edition includes excerpts from the next two in the series.
Book Description
It begins in the most boring place in the world: Chickentown, U.S.A. There lives Candy Quackenbush, her heart bursting for some clue as to what her future might hold. When the answer comes, it's not one she expects. Out of nowhere comes a wave, and Candy, led by a man called John Mischief (whose brothers live on the horns on his head), leaps into the surging waters and is carried away.

Where? To the Abarat: a vast archipelago where every island is a different hour of the day, from The Great Head that sits in the mysterious twilight waters of Eight in the Evening, to the sunlit wonders of Three in the Afternoon, where dragons roam, to the dark terrors of Gorgossium, the island of Midnight, ruled over by the Prince of Midnight himself, Christopher Carrion.

Candy has a place in this extraordinary world: She is here to help save the Abarat from the dark forces that are stirring at its heart. Forces older than Time itself, and more evil than anything Candy has ever encountered.

Save 40% on Kindle covers (KSO)

This offer is only for those with a Kindle with Special Offers:

Save 40% on select Kindle covers at Amazon.com

Click on offer, then click on the link on the offer page to receive an email with the promotion code. Sign-up for this offer expires on September 5.

You'll get an email (right away), a link to the Special Offer page and a promotion code to enter at checkout. Once you have the promotional code, you have until October 5 to complete your purchase. Like previous offers, this one requires you to use the full checkout process in order to enter your promotional code. Also, like all Amazon sales that use promotional codes, if you have a gift card balance, you must use it for the payment (if there is not a sufficient balance, then you can pick which credit card or other payment to use).

This offer can be used more than once per account, so long as you have more than one KSO registered. Just click on the ad on each device to receive the individual promotion codes via email.

Not quite as good a deal as the early KSO adopters received and a more limited selection (looks like unlighted covers only), it's still a decent discount (and should be stackable with the $5 off offer, if you haven't used it). If your KSO is naked, I'd recommend that you do get a cover - it's only a matter of time before you do drop it accidentally (or it gets knocked off the table) and the cover offers a great deal of protection (although it isn't foolproof). I think most of ours have been dropped at least once and we haven't broken one of them, so far, which I attribute to having covers on them all.

Today's Deals

The New Deal sale at Audible is over, but Amazon has added a new deal page to their Kindle Deal of the Day. 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less, hand selected by the editors at Amazon. There are way too many to list them all, but I've highlighted a few here that look interesting.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable ($2.99), by Patrick M. Lencioni, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
In The Five Dysfunctions of a Team Patrick Lencioni once again offers a leadership fable that is as enthralling and instructive as his first two best-selling books, The Five Temptations of a CEO and The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive. This time, he turns his keen intellect and storytelling power to the fascinating, complex world of teams.

Kathryn Petersen, Decision Tech's CEO, faces the ultimate leadership crisis: Uniting a team in such disarray that it threatens to bring down the entire company. Will she succeed? Will she be fired? Will the company fail? Lencioni's utterly gripping tale serves as a timeless reminder that leadership requires as much courage as it does insight.

Throughout the story, Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions which go to the very heart of why teams even the best ones-often struggle. He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build a cohesive, effective team. Just as with his other books, Lencioni has written a compelling fable with a powerful yet deceptively simple message for all those who strive to be exceptional team leaders.

Free Books Update (nook/EPUB)

There are so many free books today, I'm going to just update this one post as the nook and/or EPUB formats come up on the ones reported earlier for Kindle. Be careful with the Sony listings, as at least one shows as $0 on the product and search pages, but isn't free once it is in your cart. Also, I would not do a search on the nook or Kobo for these, as there are some double listings there, also, with one free and one not free and sometimes the [download] button grabs the wrong one.
