Free Book (iBooks) - In Her Shoes

In Her Shoes ($11.99 Kindle), by Jennifer Weiner, is free in the iBooks store. This one was a bit tricky to find (it doesn't show up in a search), but if you use the link below, you should go straight to it.
Book Description
Meet Rose Feller. She's thirty years old and a high-powered attorney with a secret passion for romance novels. She has an exercise regime she's going to start next week, and she dreams of a man who will slide off her glasses, gaze into her eyes, and tell her that she's beautiful. She also dreams of getting her fantastically screwed-up little sister to get her life together.

Meet Rose's sister, Maggie. Twenty-eight years old, drop-dead gorgeous and only occasionally employed, Maggie sings backup in a band called Whiskered Biscuit. Although her dreams of big-screen stardom haven't progressed past her left hip's appearance in a Will Smith video, Maggie dreams of fame and fortune -- and of getting her dowdy big sister to stick to a skin-care regime.

These two women with nothing in common but a childhood tragedy, shared DNA, and the same size feet, are about to learn that their family is more different than they ever imagined, and that they're more alike than they'd ever believe. In Her Shoes -- Jennifer Weiner's follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut, Good in Bed -- observes Rose and Maggie, the brain and the beauty, as they make journeys of discovery that take them from the streets of Philadelphia to Ivy League libraries to a "retirement community for active seniors" in Boca Raton. Along the way, they'll encounter a wild cast of characters -- from a stepmother who's into recreational Botox to a small, disdainful pug with no name. They'll borrow shoes and clothes and boyfriends, and make peace with their most intimate enemies -- each other.

Funny and poignant, richly detailed and wrenchingly real, In Her Shoes will speak to anyone who has endured the bonds of big -- or little -- sisterhood, or longed for a life different from the one the world has dictated, and dreamed of trying something else on for size.

Free Book (iBooks) - The Great Bridge

The Great Bridge ($14.99 Kindle), by David McCullough, is free in the iBooks store. This is one of the Agency publishers, so the book should not be at different prices in different stores (especially not from Apple!), so be sure to take the extra step to leave a note as well as report the price.
Book Description
This monumental book is the enthralling story of one of the greatest events in our nation's history, during the Age of Optimism -- a period when Americans were convinced in their hearts that all things were possible.

In the years around 1870, when the project was first undertaken, the concept of building an unprecedented bridge to span the East River between the great cities of Manhattan and Brooklyn required a vision and determination comparable to that which went into the building of the great cathedrals. Throughout the fourteen years of its construction, the odds against the successful completion of the bridge seemed staggering. Bodies were crushed and broken, lives lost, political empires fell, and surges of public emotion constantly threatened the project. But this is not merely the saga of an engineering miracle; it is a sweeping narrative of the social climate of the time and of the heroes and rascals who had a hand in either constructing or exploiting the surpassing enterprise.

Free Book (iBooks) - Jolie Blon's Bounce

Jolie Blon's Bounce ($7.99 Kindle), the twelfth title in the Robicheaux series by NYT best-selling author James Lee Burke, is free in the iTunes iBooks store. Thanks to reader Marilyn for the tip on this one!
Book Description
When a beautiful teenage girl is killed, the victim of a particularly savage rape, New Iberia, Louisiana, police detective Dave Robicheaux senses from the very start of the investigation that the most likely suspect, Tee Bobby Hulin, is not the actual killer. Though a drug addict and general ne'er-do-well, Hulin just doesn't fit the profile for this kind of brutal crime.

But when another murder occurs -- this victim a drugged-out prostitute who happens to be the daughter of one of the local mafia bigwigs -- all clues once again point to Tee Bobby Hulin, and the cries for arrest become too loud to ignore. The dead girl's father, however, prefers to take matters in his own hands and sets out to find -- and punish -- the killer himself.

But before Robicheaux can solve these crimes and bring the killer or killers to justice, he is forced to battle his own inner demons, including a painkiller addiction, a habit that begins as the result of a brutal and humiliating beating he suffers at the hands of the mysterious and diabolical character known as Legion. A fixture in the area for years, Legion was once the overseer on a local sugarcane plantation and now gets by doing odd jobs. In temperament, however, he's still the malicious and malevolent bully he always was, a man defined by evil and seemingly possessed with supernatural skills of survival.

Added to the mix, and on the good guy side of the balance sheet, is Clete Purcel, a longtime buddy of Robicheaux's and a confirmed boozer and womanizer. Clete comes to New Iberia for a visit and is quickly drawn into the struggle between the various forces of evil in the town, including Jimmy Dean Styles, a black man intent on maintaining his empire of corruption; Joe Zeroski, a trailer park mafioso with palatial aspirations -- and of course, Legion Guidry, the devil incarnate, in whom Robicheaux finds himself facing a challenge and an enemy unlike any he has ever known. And soon, what began as a duel of wits has turned into a dance of death.

Free Book (EPUB/nook/iBooks) - Stick Dog Wants a Hamburger

Stick Dog Wants a Hamburger ($1.99 Kindle), by Tom Watson, the first in the illustrated children's series from publisher BookBaby, is free in the B&N & Sony stores and on iBooks.

Book Description
Stick Dog and his four friends - Stripes, Mutt, Poo-Poo and Karen - will do anything to steal some sweet-smelling hamburgers from a family at Picasso Park. Their plans to do so are both devious and wacky. Illustrated with bold pastels, this story breaks the conventions of the traditional picture book: The narrative is conversational, the illustrations are loud and accessible and the story is longer (about 6,000 words) and aimed at slightly older readers of seven and up. Parents who read aloud will enjoy the story - and the laughs. Priced low so more people can discover Stick Dog and his buddies.

Kaplan Free Books Now Live at B&N & Sony

No sign of them yet on Kindle (and, in fact, the Kaplan main page now no longer shows Kindle as a choice; hopefully it will show up when Kaplan gets their books back on line there), but the deals pages for the 130 free books are now live at Barnes and Noble and Sony (although the prices are not at Sony), in addition to the iBooks store from Apple. There is also now a complete list of the books included, so you can browse thru them easily (and make sure you can find them, if on the iPad), HERE.

When following the links below, be sure to double check the price before ordering. There will no doubt be some books that haven't been updated or that make their way onto the category pages that don't have a $0.00 price. Only those that show $0.00 when you click to order them are free; you may have to wait on a few books for price drops over the next few days. The books should be free thru Jan 10, 2011.

A Shelf-Full of Free Books from Kaplan

Just like last semester, Kaplan is giving away a shelf-load of free books this week. So far, they are only on iBooks and my source says there are 130 of them (so did the Kaplan promo page, until they took it down and password protected it so that no one can see it anymore). The promo page said these are supposed to show up in other stores as well, but I would not count on them all being in every store (last time, only iBooks had the full 100 free books).

I've been skimming thru the titles and I've already found more than 55 that were not on the sale last time, so even if you got in on that one, you'll want to check this one out. Books range from college prep, from getting into to getting thru grad school, law school, medical/nursing or an MBA, to memoirs (mostly medical fields), math for Moms and Dads to getting an interview. I suspect almost everyone can find at least one book they would enjoy on "the list." There is even Tribal Knowledge, a business book that focuses just on Starbucks Coffee, which should have a very wide appeal.

To find the free books: open iBooks, enter "Kaplan" (some are Kaplan Publishing, some are Kaplan, Inc, that I noticed, so the one word should find both) in the search box and browse thru the pages. Be careful: about the third page, I started running into books that were not free (of course, those first couple of pages were mostly books from the last sale, that I already had). By several pages in, the free books are just scattered here and there, but it pays to just keep scrolling thru to find the gems in the list. Remember -- you are not likely to get a refund from Apple if you accidentally buy a book at full price (and I saw books as high as $35.99 when browsing, with most of them around $10). The only confirmation you get that you'll be charged is that the green "get book" secondary prompt is instead "buy book" for one that isn't free.

I searched Barnes and Noble and Sony - both have a couple of hundred books from Kaplan, but none are free right now. Amazon has two! All the ones from the last sale are missing, so I'm wondering if they have all been pulled in anticipation of a price change. Last time, it was several days to a week before the free books started popping up in other places, so I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I spot them elsewhere. Meanwhile, those of you with iPads, enjoy!

Update: As is pointed out in the comments, Kaplan has (finally) set up a webpage for this promotion and it looks like Kindle books are on the way!

Free iBook in Canada, iTunes Freebies in UK

Both of these are deals for non-US customers only, from Apple (who apparently thinks we don't need any freebies and won't let us in on their 12 Days of Christmas app).

Lawrence Hill's The Book of Negroes, released as Someone Knows My Name ($8.52 Kindle) here in the states, is free for Canadian iBooks customers today, as a part of a 12 Days of Christmas giveaway there. Those in the US can find it in iBooks, under the latter name (and for $10.17).

Book Description
Abducted as an 11-year-old child from her village in West Africa and forced to walk for months to the sea in a coffle— a string of slaves— AminataDiallo is sent to live as a slave in South Carolina. But years later, she forges her way to freedom, serving the British in the Revolutionary War and registering her name in the historic “ Book of Negroes.” This book, an actual document, provides a short but immensely revealing record of freed Loyalist slaves who requested permission to leave the US for resettlement in Nova Scotia, only to find that the haven they sought was steeped in an oppression all of its own.
Aminata’ s eventual return to Sierra Leone— passing ships carrying thousands of slaves bound for America— is an engrossing account of an obscure but important chapter in history that saw 1,200 former slaves embark on a harrowing back-to-Africa odyssey. Lawrence Hill is a master at transforming the neglected corners of history into brilliant imaginings, as engaging and revealing as only the best historical fiction can be. A sweeping story that transports the reader from a tribal African village to a plantation in the southern United States, from the teeming Halifax docks to the manor houses of London, The Book of Negroes introduces one of the strongest female characters in recent Canadian fiction, one who cuts a swath through a world hostile to her colour and her sex.

12 Days. 12 Free Downloads. 26 Dec. – 6 Jan. But, only if you are in Europe or the UK!

Apple will give away free apps, songs, books, movies and episodes of TV shows, one per day, via the app and the website. The app can be configured to send a push notification when each giveaway is ready, for those who just can't wait.

Free Books for the iPad

I'm still working on Part II of the XMAS Gifting post, as I ended up staying up late last night to help Mom get her iPad synced up and working on her network. First, it would not sync, then after upgrading to iOS4, iTunes claimed it could not recognize it and forced a restore back to factory defaults. The second time around (restore, resync, reupgrade, etc) finally worked, then I had to set it up for access on her home WiFi, then install and configure both the Kindle app and iBooks. I noticed that iBooks can seize up fairly regularly, which I had noticed on mine, but she has 1.2, while I've been using the older version; once I upgraded, I am seeing the same issue, so it's software and not hardware, it appears. The cure: click on Home to exit the app, double click Home to get the task bar, then press the iBooks icon until the "-" appears and then kill it.

While poking around on the iPad, though, I came across a few deals that I don't see for those in the Kindle store, but which, hopefully, a few of you will be able to take advantage of. These should also be available to those using most iPhones and the iPod Touch.

Painless ($6.99 Kindle US), by Derek Ciccone, is still free for UK Kindle readers and is now also free on iBooks. I'd never heard of the author before, but I've seen some good comments about it in forum threads.

Book Description
A fast-paced thriller mixed with a heartwarming story of redemption. A series of ominous incidents make Billy Harper realize there is something very different about Carolyn Whitcomb. But when a rogue organization called Operation Anesthesia learns of Carolyn’s “gifts,” Billy must risk everything to save the life of the little girl who taught him to live again.

Choice of the Dragon and Choice of Broadsides (both $4.99 Kindle) are two text adventure games from Choice of Games. Both are Active Content, so no internet connection required, but seem a bit overpriced for the lengths of the adventures, according to the reviews. Fear not, you can get these both free (at least, you can right now) as apps in the iTunes store. It also looks like you can play both of those and some others online on their website. Some are fan/user written, so don't have great reviews in the iTunes store, but the two main titles seem to be ok (and hey, they're free!).

Choice of the Dragon
Dominate the local kingdom, loot and pillage, and inspire terror in the hearts of your enemies! Please note: Choice of the Dragon contains content that may be inappropriate for children.

Choice of Broadsides
The sails have been hoisted and the guns run out as the enemy ship approaches. Your country is counting on you!

Little Miss Mary and The Big Monster Makeover, by G.G. Toropov, is a short (32 pg) children's book that is free in the iBooks store. Looks like it's out of print (except from the author's website (in the UK), but you can download the PDF or an MP3 reading for free (or read it on their webpage).

Book Description
Little Miss Mary receives an unwelcome visitor in the
grotesque shape of a huge, hairy Monster, but instead of being petrified by the apparition she decides to help the hideous beast by giving him a makeover. However, it is Mary herself who undergoes the biggest transformation in the process!

Blue Bear, Red Square: Gulper's Lake, by Chad Creighton, is another short children's book that is free in the iBooks store. You can easily find it (and a number of others), by opening up the Top Charts in iBooks, then click on Categories and choose Children's. Unlike many of the other categories, that are stuff with public domain titles, the Children's section seems to have quite a few fairly recently written books for free (on the right side of the page), some self-published and some not.

Book Description
From the Blue Bear, Red Square series of kids books comes another curious and fun-filled adventure. Blue Bear and Red Square go to the lake for a fun day in the sun. But this lake is not what it seems. This is Gulper's Lake and he doesn't appreciate being awakened from his mid-day nap. Join our friends as they discover the legend of Gulper and must work together to plan a creative escape in this easy-to-read, rhyming story that will have the kids and adults returning to these amazing color illustrations and wonderfully imaginative story time and time again.

Guy Kawasaki is giving away a PDF copy of Take Control of iPad Basics ($10.00 ebook), by Tonya Engst, if you LIKE his Facebook page, thru the end of the week (so, today and tomorrow, I believe). You can also get a 50% discount on other Take Control titles, thru the end of the year (all are non-DRM PDF formats).

Book Description
Learn key iPad concepts and skills with this friendly how-to guide!

Whether you've already used an iPad or you're starting from a blank slate, Take Control editor-in-chief Tonya Engst helps you fill in the blank spots in your basic iPad know-how. The ebook concludes by showing you how to impress your friends with a great iPad demo (you know they want it!).

Six Free Books (iBooks) - iOS4 Programming

There are six books on programming iOS4 free in the iBookstore from Apple. Not surprisingly, these are some of the most popular free iBooks available right now, only behind Winnie-the-Pooh (and outpacing the iPad User Guide). The easiest way to find them right now is to click on Top Charts and look on the Top Free Books side of the table. If they have dropped out of the top charts, you can still find them searching by name.

  2. iOS Application Programming
  3. iOS Human Interface Guidelines
  4. iOS Technology Overview
  5. Object-Oriented Programming with Objective-C

100 Free Back-to-School iBooks from Kaplan

Apple seems to be determined to position the iPad as the device of choice. This week, they've teamed up with Kaplan Publishing to give away 100 books in a Back-to-School promotion, but one that anyone can participate in ... so long as you have an iPad (or an iBooks capable iPhone or iPod Touch; my older iPhone is not). There isn't a link to use in particular, as the ibookstore isn't accessible unless you are running the iBooks app, which, although free, only works on select Apple devices. From inside the iBookstore, wait until the scrolling banner on the top of the main page shows the ad for Learn Anytime, Anywhere/100 free titles, click it and you'll be taken to the correct page to access the deal (be careful, though, as at least one title was still showing a price as of 9:30AM EST). You have until August 30th (according to the press release) to purchase the books, but they should stay on your bookshelf after that (otherwise, we all need a book on speed-reading first).

The selection is pretty deep; 22 titles on law school prep, for example, including study guides for finals in several subjects. I tried it a bit early and was able to access the list with the original prices and most of the titles were listed for $4.99 or $9.99.  So far, I've purchased several of the titles, but they haven't actually downloaded to the point that I can read them (they act like the one pre-order title that is on my bookshelf).  If any of you take advantage of this offer, let me know if your books download right away or see to be stuck as a pre-order, as mine are.

Here's a copy of the press release (note that the titles may have changed since this was released):
