$5 Instant Video Credit at Amazon

Amazon is once again giving away a $5 credit for Instant Videos (rental or purchase) and this one is not limited to those with a Kindle with Special Offers or a Roku player or a TV capable of connecting.

Instead, this offer requires a Twitter account and for you to retweet a specific phrase after following a couple of Amazon's Twitter feeds. Don't worry, all you have to do is click a button and allow Amazon to access your Twitter account, so it's very easy. Once you've got the credit, you can go back and revoke access to your Twitter account, if you want. What if you don't have a Twitter account? Just set one up and use it just for the Amazon links (I've received several credits for music and video from Amazon and use a throw-away account for the link).

Click HERE to get started. Limit one credit per customer account, sign-up expires July 19, 2011 and credit expires August 31, 2011 if unused.

$5 Instant Video Credit at Amazon

For those of us that signed up for the KSO offer of 50% off on a Roku player, we may want to consider going ahead and ordering it now, rather than waiting until the deadline of August 16. If you activate the Roku player and connect it to your Amazon account by the end of the month, you get a $5 credit for Instant Videos. The offer isn't limited to Roku players, either - if you have purchased a new Vizio, LG,  Panasonic or Samsung HDTV or a Blu-Ray player that is capable of streaming Amazon Instant Videos, you can connect them as well and get the credit. If you have more than one of these, I don't know if you can get more than one credit (there is nothing on the page limiting the offer to one per account; it only mentions that the device must be a new registration with your Amazon account).

Support Japanese Disaster Relief at O'Reilly

If you buy technical books or videos (computer programming, business, using Microsoft/Apple products, etc), you may want to check out O'Reilly's Deal of the Day. Today only, you can use coupon code DDJPN during checkout to get 50% off ebooks and videos and all revenues after author royalties will go to the Japanese Red Cross Society. So far, they have raised $40,000 and hope to reach $200,000.

If you just want to donate to disaster relief, you can do so on the Amazon website and the entire amount will go to the American Red Cross (donations over $250 will get receipts for tax purposes). But, if you need a few technical books, today's deal at O'Reilly lets you get them at half price and a portion will go directly to Japan (the American Red Cross fund is for future disasters, with the amount they direct to Japan coming out of past contributions).

Free Instant Video Streaming with Amazon Prime

Everyone with a paid Amazon Prime Membership now has access to Unlimited Free Streaming Videos with Amazon Prime. If you are a Student or Amazon Mom member, you have to upgrade to the paid membership to get this benefit (but when you do, you can share with it 4 other members of your family, which means students can share the cost with their parents, in most cases). I love Netflix and we have a plan that allows us one DVD at a time, plus streaming, but if you are going to get a streaming only account, you'll pay a lot less signing up with Amazon. Netflix streaming only is $7.99/month or $95.88 per year (plus taxes, in some states), so you'll save nearly $20 to start with, plus get all the added benefits of a prime membership.

Benefits of Amazon Prime
  • Unlimited FREE Two-Day Shipping
  • No minimum order size
  • One-Day shipping for $3.99/item
  • Unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of 5,000 movies and TV shows at no additional cost

After your free trial, Amazon Prime is just $79/year

Update: As noted by several readers, only the primary person on the Prime account gets access to free streaming videos. You would need to log in as that person to get access to the free videos (so, not something you would share lightly, as that person could order on your Amazon account). Still, it's a better deal than the same service from Netflix, but the two are different in selection and hardware supported. For example, no Wii or Playstation for Amazon, at least so far, and no Ipad support, which are the three I've used with Netflix.

Video Deal of the Day - The BBC Natural History Collection

Amazon's Gold Box deal today is a real winner for those that don't yet have Planet Earth on Blu-ray (and not bad for those who do, since you could always re-gift the standalone product to someone else or take it to your local used video store as a trade-in). The BBC High Definition Natural History Collection [Blu-ray] is marked down (today only) to $69.99 and contains all of these titles (individual prices shown for comparison: Planet Earth ($49.99), Wild China ($24.99), Galapagos ($16.99), Ganges ($16.99). All are the original and complete BBC versions, with David Attenborough narrating Planet Earth. There are eight blu-ray disks included, with a total run time of 1,150 minutes (needless to say, you won't watch it all in one night!).

Also, if you have not taken advantage of the promotion already, this DVD set (amongst many other items) will also get you $4 worth of eligible movies and TV shows from Amazon Video On Demand after you order your item (limited to one promotional credit per customer).

Product Description
  • Planet Earth (Original U.K. broadcast version narrated by David Attenborough, including 90 minutes not shown on the Discovery Channel)
  • Wild China
  • Galapagos
  • Ganges (Behind the scenes, deleted scenes, English, Hindi and Bengali narration)

More Earth Day Specials

Barnes and Noble is running a number Earth Day specials and it looks like their prices on the Planet Earth DVD's are even lower than Amazon's, as they are giving everyone Member prices, right now (then again, they'll charge sales tax in most states, but there is free shipping over $25).

FaveCrafts is giving away a copy of their Recycling Crafts eBook, which contains 42 ways to reuse and recycle common household items thru crafts. I'll probably never make a toilet paper tube napkin ring (but they might be cute for kids), but maybe I'll find a use for all those AOL CD's I've accumulated over the years.

Book Description
This green craft eBook includes:

* Section 1: Paper- Learn how to use junk mail to make paper beads.
* Section 2: Paper Making- Use paper, magazines and greeting cards to create different kinds of crafts
* Section 3: Metal- Use tins and cans to create little critters and luminaries
* Section 4: Plastic- Use those old bottles, cans and containers to create household items and decor
* Section 5: Glass- Don’t break those old wine bottles, create coasters out of them
* Section 6: Clothing- Sweaters and belts don’t have to be clothing items, they can be made into bracelets
* Section 7: Miscellaneous- Take those old CD’s and turn them into ornaments.

Synopsis
In the second chapter of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling Twilight series, the romance between mortal Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) grows more intense as ancient secrets threaten to destroy them. When Edward leaves in an effort to keep Bella safe, she tests fate in increasingly reckless ways in order to glimpse her love once more. But when she's saved from the brink by her friend, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), Bella will uncover mysteries of the supernatural world that will put her in more peril than ever before.

You may also be interested in a Roku Roku HD or HDXR player, which would hook up to your TV and the internet. If you pick up one of these by the end of the month, Amazon is tossing in $20 in credits to use in the Video on Demand store:
To take advantage of this special offer, add a Roku HD or HD-XR player to your cart and after shipment of your Roku HD or HD-XR player, you will receive an email that includes a digital code that can be used to redeem up to $20.00 worth of eligible digitally formatted shows and movies from Amazon Video On Demand, along with instructions on how to redeem.
I don't have one of these, but do watch some VOD shows using my computer and a connection to my TV. It would be nice to have a more dedicated box, though, so the wires only had to be set up once.
