New Kindle Game - MONOPOLY

MONOPOLY ($4.99 $2.49), is a brand new Kindle game from Electronic Arts. Since it has been released on the first day of the 1/2 Price Sale for EA games, you can also get it for $2.49 thru the end of the year. Finally, I can be the little doggy or the race car (pieces long since lost by a little brother on the game we played growing up). You can even modify the rules, somewhat (although nothing like some of the large scale cheating my uncle used to do, although trading and auctions seem to be allowed).

The game starts with a tutorial and you do have to wait a bit after clicking the 5-way controller for the screen to update (or it might just flash by and go to the next message), but the game seems quite playable IF you have good eyesight or play on the DX.

Book Description
Enjoy the original MONOPOLY board game on your Kindle.

You can play against your Kindle or with a combination of up to 3 friends with Pass 'N Play multiplayer. Choose between 3 different difficulty levels for your opponents - Easy, Medium, and Hard. You can even customize your house rules to change how Free Parking, Taxes, Get Out of Jail and other rules work within your game.

Featuring all the classic properties like Park Place and Boardwalk, you can buy, sell, and build houses and hotels all around the MONOPOLY board.

Half Price Kindle Games

Update: The prices are now live and a NEW game was added to the list: Monopoly!

Amazon announced that they are marking down all EA Kindle games to half price, today thru 01/02/11. Too bad for me, since I already have them all, but a nice Christmas gift for those of you that don't yet. I really like Solitaire and Sudoku and we've played a few games of Scrabble - I don't like giving up my "book" if we play on my Kindle, so we'll probably keep the board game and I'll reserve this one for solitary play. The only one I haven't played much is Texas Hold'em, but I picked it up for someone else in the household.

EA Sudoku (regularly $3.99)
EA Solitaire (regularly $3.99)
EA Texas Hold'em (regularly $3.99)
SCRABBLE (regularly $4.99)
MONOPOLY (regularly $4.99)

Free Book - Love Me

Love Me ($4.99 Kindle), by Bella Andre, the sequel to Take Me ($11.99), is today's free book from AllRomance. It looks like this author has a number of titles that are self-published in addition to the traditionally published ones; those from Simon and Schuster are priced over $10, while the others are a little more reasonable.

Book Description
It's been five years since Lily Ellis and Travis Carson got married and fell in love in TAKE ME....now it's finally time for Janica Ellis and Luke Carson to get their very own happy ending.

If there's one thing that Janica Ellis is absolutely certain of, it's that she and Luke Carson are totally wrong for each other. She's a wild, artistic and outspoken fashion designer. He's a type A, workaholic trauma surgeon (who just happens to be sizzling hot and her brother-in-law!). But Janica is about to be proven wrong when opposites attract...in the sexiest possible way.

After a life-changing night in the ER, Luke is desperate for escape - and relief from his personal demons. For five years he has fought his attraction to his sister-in-law, but when he's pushed too far, he can't fight it another second. He needs her. Desperately. He's spent his whole life doing the right thing. For one night, he's going to follow desire instead. Straight into Janica's arms.

Janica can't believe Luke is finally at her front door...and that he's kissing her like he's been waiting his whole life to touch her. But even as their sensual connection deepens with every touch of skin on skin - and the man she always thought was such a good boy turns out to be sinfully, toe-curlingly bad between the sheets - Janica soon realizes she wants more than Luke's body. She wants his heart too. But what will Luke do when one night of extreme passion turns into an all or nothing proposition?

Kindle Wi-Fi Now Sold Out!

Oprah may not have caused and instant sellout of the Kindle this year, but the millions that Amazon says it has sold has hit a temporary stopping point, as the Kindle Wi-Fi is now showing a 3-5 delay in ordering and is marked for delivery after Christmas! Maybe Amazon should have waited another week before increasing the number of Kindles per customer to five from three.

You can still get a Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi or a Kindle DX to put under the tree ... at least, here in the US. All models are sold out for international customers. In the UK, only the Kindle Wi-Fi is still in stock for Christmas delivery. At least in the US and UK, ordering one of the out of stock models should still get a unit by around the end of the year; international customers are still looking at a month or more for delivery.

Here are the links all the various models and their current delivery status.

Holiday Coupons, Free Books and Frugal Reads

There are a number of coupon codes good today or this weekend, for those buying outside of the Amazon store. First, at Kobobooks.com, use coupon code Holiday35 today to get 35% off any non-Agency book (unlimited use), such as The Finkler Question ($5.29 before coupon), which won the 2010 Man Booker Prize. In addition, I have seen some reports that coupon code Holiday50 is working on the same books for 50% off.

If you are still buying multi-format or eReader books from Fictionwse, use xmascoming2010 today or tomorrow for 50% off. Last, Untreed Reads has another exclusive coupon for readers of their "favorite blog"! You'll get 25% off your entire purchase with by applying coupon code FANSOFBOTK. This one is good until Christmas Day and they are now up to 100 titles (well, they will be next week, when #100 gets published). With all of their prices from 99 cents to $5.99, their entire catalog is affordably priced. I do wish that they indicated the length on each story's product page, but you can sort by length and select novels or novellas only, if you'd rather skip the shorter titles.

Storytellers: Apprentice ($0.99 Kindle), by Martin Sharlow, is free in the B&N store for the holiday season. This is the first in a planned trilogy (the second, Storytellers: Adept, is also 99 cents on Kindle.)

Book Description
Fantasy author Martin Sharlow starts a new series here with book one. He shows us a land of magic, where casters summon stories from works of fiction then use these story constructs for work, or for battle.

Thousands of years ago, the great Sage Montok Waynew signed the Book Accords, in which it was declared that all books must edify and instruct for the good of all mankind. Created in the hope to end the tyranny that had come into existence in their time, it was widely received and ratified by all living Sages as a good thing in the wake of the last great Story wars. So it went, that those books that were not found desirable were burned or destroyed, to protect all future generations.

Gailen, Alena and Targ find this peace is about to end. In a world where Sages can summon stories to life to do their bidding, these three apprentices must find where they belong, when the laws of the past seem to no longer exist.

Simon Wood is giving away his short story Road Rash as a Christmas gift to his readers. This young adult horror/thriller looks like it might be well suited for reading on a dark and stormy night (or maybe not!). The only review so far at Smashwords dropped on star off his 5-star review because he wanted it to be longer....

Book Description
Straley might think his life is cursed, but it doesn't compare to what lies ahead. He's on the run with the loot from a botched bank raid when he comes across an auto wreck. There's no saving the drivers, but he can save himself & steals a car. Alas, he boosts the wrong car. Within an hour, a rash eats at his flesh. If Straley wants his skin back, he must journey on the road to redemption.

The kingdom is in ruin. The barons refuse to recognize Ben as King, a dragon is decimating the countryside, and a demon lord has challenged any prospective ruler to a fatal duel. To make matters worse, the Paladin, renowned champion of the Kings of Landover, seems to be merely a legend.

Ben’s only allies are a bumbling court magician, a talking dog turned court scribe, and the beautiful Willow, who is part girl, part tree. With his friends in tow, Ben sets out to claim the throne. Handsome, haughty Will Darcy, a Confederate officer back from the war, owns half the land around Rosings, and his even haughtier cousin, Cate Burroughs, owns the other half.

In a town as small as Rosings, Beth and Will inevitably cross paths. But as Will becomes enchanted with the fiery Yankee, Beth won't allow herself to warm to the man who represents the one thing she hates most: the army that killed her only brother.

Genghis: Birth of an Empire ($0.76), by Conn Iggulden, the first in his Genghis series is now marked down to a ridiculously low price. Publisher's Weekly called this "brilliantly imagined and addictive historical fiction" (and it's over $6 at Kobo and others).

Book Description
BONUS: This edition contains excerpts from Conn Iggulden's Genghis: Lords of the Bow ($6.15) and Khan: Empire of Silver ($14.30).

Genghis Khan was born Temujin, the son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the rugged steppe. Shaped by abandonment and betrayal, Temujin endured, driven by a singular fury: to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies who could come without warning from beyond the horizon.

Through a series of courageous raids, Temujin’s legend grew until he was chasing a vision: to unite many tribes into one, to make the earth tremble under the hoofbeats of a thousand warhorses, to subject all nations and empires to his will.

Coventry ($1.91 Kindle, B&N), by Helen Humphreys

Book Description
Helen Humphreys draws on history to delve into the lives torn asunder by the German attack of November 14, 1940. Harriet, a widow from World War I, is atop Coventry Cathedral, part of the nightly watch, when first the factories and then the church itself are set on fire. In the ensuing chaos she bonds with a young man, very much like the husband she lost, who relies on her to find the way back to his home where he left his mother. On their journey through a hell of burning shops and collapsed homes, Harriet awakens to emotions she had long put aside. At home, the youth's mother awaits his arrival and rethinks the life that has brought her to this city and her life raising her son alone. Ultimately, together these two women must face a world as immeasurably changed as their own selves.

Free Short Story from Rainbow eBooks - The Real Thing

This weekend's free read from Rainbow eBooks is a very short, short story: The Real Thing, by Beth Wylde. As with all their stories, there is an LGBT theme and I believe this one is F/F (there is no description of the story listed).

Free Book - Dark Horse

Dark Horse ($6.99 Kindle), by Kate Sherwood, is today's free book from AllRomance.

Book Description
Dan thinks about just driving, leaving the whole mess behind. He's got enough money. He could just arrange to get his stuff and his horse shipped to wherever he's going. Taking off is what he used to do when things got to be too much, and it worked pretty well, really.

Dan Wheeler thought he'd found lasting love and stability with his life and work partner Justin Archer. But when Dan finds himself alone again, still working as a horse trainer for Justin's parents, he has to find a way to accept that his perfect life is gone forever.

Then he meets billionaire Evan Kaminski, who arrives to buy a horse for his younger sister, and Evan's lover Jeff Stevens, a horse trainer who seems to understand more than just Dan's job. Struggling to deal with all the upheaval in his life, Dan finds himself drawn to both Evan's mercurial passion and Jeff's quiet wisdom. Is Dan strong enough to take a chance on new love, or would it be better—safer—for him to be alone?

Major Kindle for Android Update - Magazines and Newspapers!

The first Kindle app to be upgraded to allow viewing of Magazines and Newspapers is here and (lucky me!) it's the Android App that I run on my phone. No doubt this will drive even more speculation that a Kindle Tablet is just around the corner (of course, if you jailbreak your NOOKcolor and get the Kindle App in the Android market, you'll have a Kindle tablet before anyone else). I've added a few photos, below, so that you can both compare the layout on the K3 and the phone, as well as see an article with a color photo and the same photo, zoomed to full size. Click on any one of them for a larger view.

It's all very readable on the phone, but this would be just AWESOME on the iPad! But, what I am most excited to see? When I used SEARCH in my archives on the phone (yes, unlike the iPad, you can type in a name and get all the matches at one time), I had two weeks worth of The New York Times there to choose from. Amazon has said that they were bringing Buy Once, Read Anywhere to their apps, along with Magazines and Newspapers, and this looks to be the first indication of that. Those same issues are NOT available in the archives from the iPad or a second Kindle device on my account, only from my phone with the new Kindle for Android App. Poking around on The New York Times subscription page, I found a tiny little addition:

Which seems to indicate that having back issues in the archive is the new normal. So, in a multi-Kindle home, if the subscription is on one Kindle, you can also read it on any Android device that is on the same account!

If you have an Android device with the Kindle app, be sure to sign up for your TWO MONTH! free trial of The New York Times ($19.99 Month). The normal 14 day free trial is being extended for new subscribers, thru February 15, 2011. I haven't tried, but I suspect you can get this same free trial offer on each of your Kindle devices (but no need on Android, if you don't mind retrieving it from your archives, rather than having it pushed to the phone automatically).

I will add one warning: If you subscribe to something on your phone, you will want to have an unlimited data plan (or at least, a fairly high limit) or only use WiFi when running the Kindle app, so that it syncs with no charge. That's also true of some of the books I've looked at with Audio/Video content (one was over 100 MB), as well as some graphics intensive books (a Bible study guide I looked at was over 32MB, due to the maps).

Free Book (nook) - Ninja

Today's Free Friday selection at Barnes and Noble is Ninja ($1.99 Kindle), by Jon F. Merz, an author I've mentioned a few times previously on this blog. This one is a short story, at just under 10,000 words, and is the start of a new series. Jon also has an upcoming book, published by St. Martins, The Kensei ($9.99 Kindle), in his Lawson Vampire series, the earlier titles of which are, unfortunately, only available in used book stores. He does have an author newsletter (I checked my archive and it only comes out every few months); if you sign up for it this week, you'll get the next issue, which will include a new short story, "Rudolf the Red Nosed Rogue".

Book Description
In the style of Robert E. Howard, NINJA tells the story of a mythical warrior hero named Ran as he graduates from the ninja school he has been attending for twenty years and begins undertaking all sorts of missions across an alternate Earth. Ran will travel far and wide gathering intelligence, acquiring priceless artifacts, and battling evil wherever he finds it...

Written by bestselling author Jon F. Merz, himself a 20-year+ practitioner and master instructor of Togakure-ryu Ninjutsu, NINJA is destined to thrill readers with its authentic ninja action combined with the adrenaline of the best fantasy fiction. This is the first in a planned series of adventure surrounding Ran.

Free Book (nook) - Selected Stories of O. Henry

This week's Free Fridays book at B&N is one of their Barnes & Noble Classics Series, Selected Stories of O. Henry, by O. Henry & Victoria Blake. A nice edition of a well-known classic, this one was also free last July.

Book Description
Selected Stories of O. Henry, by O. Henry, is part of the Barnes & Noble Classics series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics:

  • New introductions commissioned from today's top writers and scholars
  • Biographies of the authors
  • Chronologies of contemporary historical, biographical, and cultural events
  • Footnotes and endnotes
  • Selective discussions of imitations, parodies, poems, books, plays, paintings, operas, statuary, and films inspired by the work
  • Comments by other famous authors
  • Study questions to challenge the reader's viewpoints and expectations
  • Bibliographies for further reading
  • Indices & Glossaries, when appropriate
All editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works.

O. Henry mastered the art of the humorous, energetic tale that ends with a sudden, ironic twist. In “After Twenty Years,” for example, two boys agree to meet at a particular spot exactly twenty years later. Both are faithful, but in the intervening years one boy has turned into a criminal, the other into a policeman. Behind the rendezvous lurks a powerful dramatic situation with a fascinating moral dilemma—all dealt with in a few brief pages.

This is just one of the many literary gems in Selected Stories of O. Henry, a collection of 45 of O. Henry’s most renowned and entertaining short stories. Each one offers insights into human nature and the ways it is affected by love, hate, wealth, poverty, gentility, disguise, and crime—themes that ran through the author’s own life. Born William Sidney Porter, O. Henry started writing while in prison for embezzlement. Later he moved to New York, and his tales romanticizing the commonplace, particularly the life of ordinary New Yorkers, became highly popular. The most widely read author of his time, O. Henry died penniless but left behind a wealth of short stories that endure as classics of the genre.

Victoria Blake is a freelance writer. She has worked at The Paris Review and contributed to the Boulder Daily Camera, small literary presses in the United States, and English-language publications in Bangkok, Thailand. She currently lives and works in San Diego, California.

A Gift for Christmas

CJ West has been writing thrillers for a decade and is just one of the indie authors who is getting consistently good reviews at Amazon. I looked in my archive and see that I bought one of his books myself, earlier this year.

As a Christmas gift to thank his readers, he is offering to send everyone a copy of The End of Marking Time ($2.99 Kindle) via email. Send an email to him at authors (at) 22wb dot com (obviously, you'll need to replace the words with the correct punctuation to get a valid email address). If you get it in today (Wednesday), all you have to do is ask. If you see this on Thursday, you get a copy too, just mention this blog, as he has extended the offer for my readers. You can use any type of email account, he isn't accumulating the addresses for later use, just to send you the file. By default, he'll send you a MOBI formatted file for the Kindle, but if you want PDF or RTF, he can do that also, just make sure to mention it in your request.

Once you receive the file, just save it onto your computer, then copy it to your Kindle (or, if you are lazy, like me, just forward the email he sends you to your free Kindle address and it'll show up there the next time you have wi-fi on). He is sending the free books out in batches, so will get some sent out tonight and the rest tomorrow night; don't panic if it doesn't show up right away.

Book Description
Gifted housebreaker, Michael O'Connor, awakens inside an ultramodern criminal justice system where prison walls are replaced by surveillance equipment and a host of actors hired to determine if he is worthy of freedom. While he was sleeping, the Supreme Court declared long term incarceration to be cruel and unusual punishment and ordered two million felons released. The result was utter chaos and the backlash from law-abiding citizens and police departments reshaped the United States. Felons now enter reeducation programs where they live freely among the population. At least that's what they think. In reality they are enslaved to an army of counselors and a black box that teaches them everything they failed to learn from kindergarten through adulthood. Michael believes he's being tested by the black box, but what he slowly begins to realize is that everything he does is evaluated to determine whether he lives or dies.
