UK Kindle Daily Deal 5/18

Seoul Survivors (£1.09 UK), by Naomi Foyle, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (no US edition).
Book Description
A meteor known as Lucifer's Hammer is about to wreak destruction on the earth, and with the end of the world imminent, there is only one safe place to be.

In the mountains above Seoul, American-Korean bio-engineer Dr Kim Da Mi thinks she has found the perfect solution to save the human race. But her methods are strange and her business partner, Johnny Sandman, is not exactly the type of person anyone would want to mix with.

Drawn in by their smiles and pretty promises, Sydney - a Canadian model trying to escape an unhappy past - is an integral part of their scheme, until she realises that the quest for perfection comes at an impossible price.

Nook Daily Find 4/19

Angelology ($12.99 Kindle, $1.99 B&N), by Danielle Trussoni, is the Nook Daily Find. This should be price matched on Kindle by early morning, since Penguin is still an Agency Pricing publisher.
Book Description
A thrilling epic about an ancient clash reignited in our time--between a hidden society and heaven's darkest creatures

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. --Genesis 6:5

Sister Evangeline was just a girl when her father entrusted her to the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in upstate New York. Now, at twenty-three, her discovery of a 1943 letter from the famous philanthropist Abigail Rockefeller to the late mother superior of Saint Rose Convent plunges Evangeline into a secret history that stretches back a thousand years: an ancient conflict between the Society of Angelologists and the monstrously beautiful descendants of angels and humans, the Nephilim.

For the secrets these letters guard are desperately coveted by the once-powerful Nephilim, who aim to perpetuate war, subvert the good in humanity, and dominate mankind. Generations of angelologists have devoted their lives to stopping them, and their shared mission, which Evangeline has long been destined to join, reaches from her bucolic abbey on the Hudson to the apex of insular wealth in New York, to the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris and the mountains of Bulgaria.

Rich in history, full of mesmerizing characters, and wondrously conceived, Angelology blends biblical lore, the myth of Orpheus and the Miltonic visions of Paradise Lost into a riveting tale of ordinary people engaged in a battle that will determine the fate of the world.

Author Spotlight - Bob Mayer

Bob Mayer has a couple of books listed for 99 cents each. One is backlist, written under pseudonym, the other appears to be from last year. You can find a lot of his backlist for $2.99, originally published under pseudonyms Greg Donegan and Robert Doherty. The Atlantis series seems to have been published now under all three. His Area 51 series is still being published by Dell, but is mostly in the $6 range.

ATLANTIS ($0.99), by Greg Donegan / Robert Doherty / Bob Mayer, is the first in his Atlantis series ($2.99 each), originally published under the pseudonym Greg Donegan.

Book Description
By NY Times Bestselling Author Bob Mayer writing as Robert Doherty (author of the bestselling Area 51 series)

Over 1,000,000 copies sold! Amazon Hot 100 in print. Amazon Top 10 in Thriller.

“Spell-binding! Will keep you on the edge of your seat. Call it techno-thriller, call it science fiction, call it just terrific story-telling.” Terry Brooks, #1 NY Times Bestselling author of the Shannara series and Star Wars Phantom Menace

What if the Shadow that destroyed Atlantis 10,000 years ago, comes back to threaten our present world?

A war beyond time. An enemy beyond space. A thriller beyond your wildest dreams. Three areas on the Earth’s surface defy explanation: the Bermuda Triangle, the Devil’s Sea of Japan, and a small region of Cambodia. Inside these realms, planes have disappeared, ships have vanished, and, in Cambodia, an entire civilization has been lost leaving behind Angkor Wat.

In 1945, Training Flight 19 disappears in the Bermuda Triangle.
In 1963, the USS Thresher, a nuclear submarine, is lost under unusual circumstances, part of a secret government investigation into mysterious gates.
Near the end of of the Vietnam War, Green Beret Eric Dane led a team of operatives deep into Cambodia and encountered a strange fog near the legendary city of Angkor Kol Ker. His entire team disappears, attacked by strange creatures out of the fog. Only Dane survives to return.

Now a plane goes down. In the same area Dane lost his team. He’s called back. To find out who is the darkness behind these gates to our planet. What does this Shadow force want? It is a threat that will take on the world’s greatest military forces and defeat them. A power that will overwhelm our science and technology. A merciless enemy that will lead Dane—and the whole planet—into the final desperate battle for survival.

If you enjoyed LOST, you’ll love this book and be amazed at the similarities in concept (although this book was published before Lost).

Chasing the Ghost ($0.99), by Bob Mayer, appears to be a new title in his Black Ops series ($2.99 each), at least from the publication date and according to Fantastic Fiction.

Book Description
Covert operative Horace Chase has been chasing ghosts his entire life.

First, his Medal-of-Honor winner father who died in Vietnam without ever meeting his son. And left him the legacy of an automatic appointment to the Military Academy at West Point which shaped the next thirty-five years of Chase's life. Then, the ghost of his mother, who died while he was at war in Afghanistan and wounded, causing him to resign his commission and return to the United States, a lost soul.

Chase now wears two hats as a Federal counter-terrorism liaison to the local police department in Boulder, Colorado where he becomes embroiled in two seemingly un-related cases. Working as a detective with Boulder PD he chases another death, this one the apparent rape/murder of Rachel Stevens, an upscale housewife attending night classes at the University of Colorado. And with his counter-terrorism team he is embroiled in a series of killings involving a militia group, a rogue ex-Special Forces officer, a psychopathic ex-CIA contract mercenary, and ruthless drug runners.

From the streets of Boulder, to the highest railroad tunnel in the world, to a swingers club hiding in plain site in suburbia, Afghanistan starts to look pretty good to Chase.

A Gift for Christmas

CJ West has been writing thrillers for a decade and is just one of the indie authors who is getting consistently good reviews at Amazon. I looked in my archive and see that I bought one of his books myself, earlier this year.

As a Christmas gift to thank his readers, he is offering to send everyone a copy of The End of Marking Time ($2.99 Kindle) via email. Send an email to him at authors (at) 22wb dot com (obviously, you'll need to replace the words with the correct punctuation to get a valid email address). If you get it in today (Wednesday), all you have to do is ask. If you see this on Thursday, you get a copy too, just mention this blog, as he has extended the offer for my readers. You can use any type of email account, he isn't accumulating the addresses for later use, just to send you the file. By default, he'll send you a MOBI formatted file for the Kindle, but if you want PDF or RTF, he can do that also, just make sure to mention it in your request.

Once you receive the file, just save it onto your computer, then copy it to your Kindle (or, if you are lazy, like me, just forward the email he sends you to your free Kindle address and it'll show up there the next time you have wi-fi on). He is sending the free books out in batches, so will get some sent out tonight and the rest tomorrow night; don't panic if it doesn't show up right away.

Book Description
Gifted housebreaker, Michael O'Connor, awakens inside an ultramodern criminal justice system where prison walls are replaced by surveillance equipment and a host of actors hired to determine if he is worthy of freedom. While he was sleeping, the Supreme Court declared long term incarceration to be cruel and unusual punishment and ordered two million felons released. The result was utter chaos and the backlash from law-abiding citizens and police departments reshaped the United States. Felons now enter reeducation programs where they live freely among the population. At least that's what they think. In reality they are enslaved to an army of counselors and a black box that teaches them everything they failed to learn from kindergarten through adulthood. Michael believes he's being tested by the black box, but what he slowly begins to realize is that everything he does is evaluated to determine whether he lives or dies.

Author Spotlight: Stephen King

A few of Stephen King's titles have been on the bargain list for some time (see this post for Riding the Bullet ($2.00), UR ($2.99) and Colorado Kid ($3.99) ), but there are some new titles marked down today. The first two, The Running Man (1982) and Thinner (1984) were written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, while the last two Cujo (1981) and Misery (1987) are classic Stephen King. All four are currently marked at $3.99.

Under the Dome pre-order price drop to $7.99

It's not as good a deal as the momentary drop to $7.20 a while back, but Under the Dome, by Stephen King (December 24, 2009), can be pre-ordered now in the Kindle store for $7.99.

If you have already pre-ordered at a higher price, I'd recommend canceling that order and re-ordering at the new price (but do so quickly, after confirming the new price, as it can go up again at any time). Apparently the pre-order price guarantee at Amazon may not cover Kindle books, as they don't display the "Pre-Order Price Guarantee" banner that is required (and there are reports of people who have and haven't received lower prices on Kindle pre-orders).. Easy enough to order again, since it's only a couple of extra clicks.

December Suvudu Free Library

Suvudu has finally updated their Free Library page with their December picks, Wit'ch Fire, by James Clemens, and Already Dead, by Charlie Huston. Looks like they wanted to wait until more than just Sony and Amazon had them up as free before they gave us the PDF copies (which are the only DRM free copies that they give away).

Click HERE to get the PDF's or use the links above for the Kindle (for Sony, open the library software and search on the title names).

Two Three Free Books on Sony

Two Three new free books in the Sony Store today. The links below are to the Amazon versions, so you can read the reviews (remember, for Sony books, you have to open their software and search by title or look in their Bargain Priced section; web links on their store or here won't work for buying Sony books). So far, these are full price at Amazon, but there is some indication that that may change ... if so, I'll repost them as an Amazon deal. Both are now free on Kindle, as well.

Already Dead ($9.99), by Charlie Huston

Update: In addition to being free in the Kindle store, you can get an epub version free at Shortcovers.

Book Description
Those stories you hear? The ones about things that only come out at night? Things that feed on blood, feed on us? Got news for you: they’re true. Only it’s not like the movies or old man Stoker’s storybook. It’s worse. Especially if you happen to be one of them. Just ask Joe Pitt.

There’s a shambler on the loose. Some fool who got himself infected with a flesh-eating bacteria is lurching around, trying to munch on folks’ brains. Joe hates shamblers, but he’s still the one who has to deal with them. That’s just the kind of life he has. Except afterlife might be better word.

From the Battery to the Bronx, and from river to river, Manhattan is crawling with Vampyres. Joe is one of them, and he’s not happy about it. Yeah, he gets to be stronger and faster than you, and he’s tough as nails and hard to kill. But spending his nights trying to score a pint of blood to feed the Vyrus that’s eating at him isn’t his idea of a good time. And Joe doesn’t make it any easier on himself. Going his own way, refusing to ally with the Clans that run the undead underside of Manhattan–it ain’t easy. It’s worse once he gets mixed up with the Coalition–the city’s most powerful Clan–and finds himself searching for a poor little rich girl who’s gone missing in Alphabet City.

Now the Coalition and the girl’s high-society parents are breathing down his neck, anarchist Vampyres are pushing him around, and a crazy Vampyre cult is stalking him. No time to complain, though. Got to find that girl and kill that shambler before the whip comes down . . . and before the sun comes up.

Wit'ch Fire ($6.39), by James Clemens. It turns out that this one also contains Wit'ch Storm (at least in the Sony Store), so you get two full books with one download, which correlates to this title at Amazon (which isn't a bad deal at two books for $6.39): Wit'ch Fire/Storm.

Book Description
Wit'ch Fire: On a fateful night five centuries ago, three mages made a desperate last stand, sacrificing everything to preserve the only hope of goodness in the beautiful, doomed land of Alasea. Now, on the anniversary of that ominous night, a girl-child ripens into the heritage of lost power. But before she can even comprehend her terrible new gift, the Dark Lord dispatches his winged monsters to capture her and bring him the embryonic magic she embodies. Fleeing the minions of darkness, Elena is swept toward certain doom--and into the company of unexpected allies. There she forms a band of the hunted and the cursed, the outcasts and the outlaws, to battle the unstoppable forces of evil and rescue a once-glorious empire...

Wit'ch Storm: Elena bears the mark of the wit'ch upon her palm, the crimson stain that testifies to the awesome power of unimaginable potency: wild, seductive, difficult to control. Only a mistress of blood magick can stand against the foul minions and all-corrupting evil of the Dark Lord. But Elena is not yet the mistress of her magick. Protected by an ageless warrior and a band of renegades, she quests for a lost city where prophecies speak of a mystic tome that holds the key to the Dark Lord's defeat. But if the Dark Lord finds her first, Elena will become his most fearsome weapon. Sy-wen is a girl-child of an ocean-dwelling clan, bond-mates to the terrible and majestic sea dragons. But ancient bonds tie Sy-wen to the land she does not know, to a man she has never seen ... and to a legend asleep in stone deep beneath A'loa Glen--a legend beginning to wake. Now, as Elena and Sy-wen converge on A'loa Glen from land and sea, will the forces they unleash lead to a future of freedom--or an eternity under the Dark Lord's yoke?

Three Free Books from Samhain

Samhain publishing has been having some of their books as free downloads in the Kindle store for several months and recently at Books on Board. No word yet if they plan to do the same this month, but I did find three books on their website that are free to download and in multiple formats, so that all ebook readers can try them out. Maybe they've decided to skip the retailers completely this time? In any case, make sure you check out the warnings from the book descriptions (included here, but not on the download page), before downloading.

Last Chance, My Love ($4.40 Kindle), by Lynne Connolly, was free in the Kindle store last February, so some of you may already have it hiding in your archives. This is the first in the Triple Countess series.

Synopsis
What if you're in love -- but you can't make love?

Miranda and Daniel, Earl and Countess of Rosington, are in love, but for the past five years their love has been purely platonic. Because if Miranda has another child, she will die. Daniel resolves to take a mistress, one who will understand the purely physical business arrangement, but when Miranda discovers his plan, she can't bear it. So Daniel's brothers scheme, and Daniel finds himself on the losing end of a wager.

Daniel and Miranda must pose as a simple innkeeper and his wife, forced to work together to save a failing business. Their masquerade brings them into temptation, their searing desire for each other threatening to ruin their good intentions, but it also brings danger, in the presence of the brutal father of a young girl who turns for them for help.

Can Daniel and Miranda save themselves, their protege and their marriage?

Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex.

Seeing Eye Mate ($3.60 Kindle), by Annmarie McKenna, is one I haven't seen available for free before. This is the first in the Mates series.

Book Description
He's a shape-shifting wolf, she's a psychic and his other half. In order to catch a killer he has to rely on his Seeing Eye Mate. Caelan Graham is on the hunt for a shape-shifter bent on killing female mates. As Prime, it's Caelan's duty to protect his entire pack, so it's a good thing he doesn't have a mate of his own to look after right now. Too bad the most alluring female has just walked past his nose. As a clairvoyant, Tieran Jones has given up on men and their lack of understanding her gift -- until Caelan. The man ignites her passion, sets off a vision of a gruesome wolf attack, then shows up in her bed. In wolf form. To top it all off, he keeps insisting she's his mate.

When the attacks continue, Tieran's visions evolve and point in one direction. Caelan's twin brother. With a lack of physical evidence, Caelan must depend on Tieran's sight for clues. An act making her a prime target.

Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, graphic language, and violence.

Truth and Consequences ($4.40 Kindle), by Linda Winfree, has also been free in the Kindle store, this time nearly a year ago, in October. This is the first in the Hearts of the South series.

Book Description
For undercover FBI agent Jason Harding, coming face to face with the grown-up version of his adolescent dreams is a nightmare. Kathleen Palmer sees him as a despicably corrupt small-town law officer and a murder suspect. Trapped in a web of his own making, he must see his mission through to the end and bring down the crooked cops who've run Haynes County for decades. To do so, he must betray the only family he's ever known and fight his growing love for Kathleen, a relationship that could get one, or both of them, killed.

Determined to uncover the truth, Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent Kathleen struggles with her attraction to the one person who's awakened her since she buried her heart and emotions in her son's tiny grave. Listening to her heart could destroy all she has left in life - her career and reputation. When the truth about Jason's identity surfaces, they both face unimaginable consequences: Jason may lose his life and Kathleen the man she loves.

Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, violence.
