Bargain Book Roundup and a Reminder

Well, it's the final day to be able to ship something from Amazon and still have it get there before Christmas (my Amazon page shows 4:30 PST as the final time, but some items may have earlier times to make that last overnight Fedex run). Which means you can still order a Kindle Fire today and be watching streaming videos Christmas morning. If you or the recipient is a big audiobook listener, don't forget that you can also take advantage of the $100 credit from Audible, if you act early enough (it can take a while for the credit to show up - I renewed my Audible subscription with this earlier this month, when my 6-fo-$6 subscription ended and had to wait 30 minutes to an hour to get the promo code in email). You sign up for Audible using the link, wait for a promo number in your email, then order any of the electronics on the link page and get $100 off the order (note that if the item is less than $100, you get it free, but you don't get any leftover credit -- this isn't a great deal on very inexpensive items, as you are better off using a different Audible promo). You do end up paying more than $100 for the Audible subscription, but you also get 12 audiobooks (and access to the various sales at Amazon) with it. There are also a lot of other choices besides a Kindle Fire - the Kindle Touch, various iPods, Garmin GPS systems and more are on the list.

I'm going to highlight some bargain books, but also include a few search links or just lists of titles. Several publishers have dropped prices on a number of their books and it's just too many for my usual posts. To get you started, here are 18 titles that Hatchette has marked down under $3 (most under $2).

Don't forget, you can gift any of the non-free books (and even specify a delivery date, or send a physical gift card (even in a gift box!) or via email (from Amazon or to you and then you send it to the recipient) or print one off in time for the holidays, as well. Those of you using Kobo and Barnes & Noble can use gift cards as well (and even book gifting, but without delivery dates).

Unearthly ($0.99), by Cynthia Hand, looks to be a good teen title.
Book Description
In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Shaman's Crossing ($1.99), starts off Robin Hobb's Second Son Trilogy.
Book Description
Nevare Burvelle is the second son of a second son, destined from birth to carry a sword. The wealthy young noble will follow his father—newly made a lord by the King of Gernia—into the cavalry, training in the military arts at the elite King's Cavella Academy in the capital city of Old Thares. Bright and well-educated, an excellent horseman with an advantageous engagement, Nevare's future appears golden.

But as his Academy instruction progresses, Nevare begins to realize that the road before him is far from straight. The old aristocracy looks down on him as the son of a "new noble" and, unprepared for the political and social maneuvering of the deeply competitive school and city, the young man finds himself entangled in a web of injustice, discrimination, and foul play. In addition, he is disquieted by his unconventional girl-cousin Epiny—who challenges his heretofore unwavering world view—and by the bizarre dreams that haunt his nights.

For twenty years the King's cavalry has pushed across the grasslands, subduing and settling its nomads and claiming the territory in Gernia's name. Now they have driven as far as the Barrier Mountains, home to the Speck people, a quiet, forest-dwelling folk who retain the last vestiges of magic in a world that is rapidly becoming modernized. From childhood Nevare has been taught that the Specks are a primitive people to be pitied for their backward ways—and feared for their indigenous diseases, including the deadly Speck plague, which has ravaged the frontier towns and military outposts.

The Dark Evening brings the carnival to Old Thares, and with it an unknown magic, and the first Specks Nevare has ever seen . . .

Book Description
From the brilliantly imaginative New York Times bestselling author Charles Todd comes an unforgettable new character in an exceptional new seriesEngland, 1916. It is some months before she can carry out this duty, and when she's next in England, she herself is recovering from a wound.

Neither his mother nor his brother Timothy seems to think it has any significance. Unsettled by this, Bess is about to take her leave when sudden tragedy envelops her. She quickly discovers that fulfilling this duty to the dead has thrust her into a maelstrom of intrigue and murder that will endanger her own life and test her courage as not even war has.

Tides of War ($2.99), by Stella Tillyard, has been named by Library Journal one of the Top Ten Best Books of 2011.
Book Description
An epic novel about love and war, set in Regency England and Spain during the Peninsular War (1812-15), by the acclaimed historian and bestselling author of Aristocrats

Tides of War opens in England with the recently married, charmingly unconventional Harriet preparing to say goodbye to her husband, James, as he leaves to join the Duke of Wellington's troops in Spain.

Harriet and James's interwoven stories of love and betrayal propel this sweeping and dramatic novel as it moves between Regency London on the cusp of modernity—a city in love with science, the machine, money—and the shocking violence of war in Spain. With dazzling skill Stella Tillyard explores not only the effects of war on the men at the front but also the freedoms it offers the women left behind. As Harriet befriends the older and protective Kitty, Lady Wellington, her life begins to change in unexpected ways. Meanwhile, James is seduced by the violence of battle, and then by love in Seville.

As the novel moves between war and peace, Spain and London, its large cast of characters includes the serial adulterer and war hero the Duke of Wellington, and the émigrés Nathan Rothschild and Frederic Winsor who will usher in the future, creating a world brightly lit by gaslight where credit and financial speculation rule. Whether describing the daily lives and desires of strong female characters or the horror of battle, Tides of War is set to be the fiction debut of the year.

A Heartbeat Away ($2.99), by Michael Palmer
Book Description
On the night of the State of the Union address, President James Allaire expects to give the speech of his career. But no one anticipates the terrifying turn of events that forces him to quarantine everyone in the Capitol building. A terrorist group calling itself “Genesis” has unleashed WRX3883, a deadly, highly contagious virus, into the building. No one fully knows the deadly effect of the germ except for the team responsible for its development—a team headed by Allaire, himself. The only one who might be able to help is virologist Griffin Rhodes, currently in solitary confinement in a maximum security federal prison for alleged terrorist acts, including the attempted theft of WRX3883 from the lab where he worked. Rhodes has no idea why he has been arrested, but when Allaire offers to free him in exchange for his help combating the virus, he reluctantly agrees to do what he can to support the government that has imprisoned him without apparent cause.

Meanwhile, every single person in line for presidential succession is trapped inside the Capitol—every person except one: the Director of Homeland Security, who is safely at home in Minnesota, having been selected as the “Designated Survivor” for this event. With enemies both named and unnamed closing in, and the security of the nation at stake, Griff must unravel the mysteries of WRX3883 without violating his pledge as a scientist to use no animal testing in his experiments…and time is running out.

Tense, thrilling, and entirely plausible, A Heartbeat Away will make you reflect, wonder, and be truly afraid.

And while she swore nothing could make her desire a scoundrel, even if he was a duke, she is now drawing ever closer to the one man she cannot have . . .

He is about to find himself seduced . . . and he isn't quite sure he wants to resist this time.

A Dog Named Slugger ($0.99), by Leigh Brill
Book Description
The true life story of a dog who changed everything for one woman. For the first time in my life, I didn't need to pretend, I didn't need to be tough: I only needed to be honest. "I have cerebral palsy. I walk funny and my balance is bad. I fall a lot. My hands shake, too. That means I'm not so good at carrying things. And if I drop stuff, sometimes it's hard to just bend down and get it." I waited anxiously for the interviewer's response. She smiled. "It sounds like a service dog could be great for you." So began Leigh Brill's journey toward independence and confidence, all thanks to a trained companion dog named Slugger. The struggling college student and the Labrador with a "a coat like sunshine" and a tail that never stopped wagging became an instant team. Together, they transformed a challenge into a triumph. Together, they inspired and educated everyone they met. Now, Leigh honors her friend with the story of their life, together.

It's a bit early for this title (if only by a week), but 101 Ways to Clean Out the Clutter ($1.99), by Emilie Barnes, might be the perfect gift for that person on your list that has everything! Of course, there is also the classic The Clutter Diet at $4.99 (one of my earliest Kindle purchases, back when it cost quite a bit more) and I'm very tempted to try out The House that Cleans Itself ($2.99), as it sounds like even less work. The lower priced two are from Harvest House, an "inspirational publisher" that has a number of titles marked down (see below) right now.
101 Ways to Clean Out the Clutter
Home management expert and bestselling author Emilie Barnes comes to the aid of every clutter keeper with 101 simple ideas to rid rooms of piles, stacks, and disarray. Readers will rediscover space and peace in their home as they
  • stop making excuses for the useless items they keep
  • eliminate junk mail before it junks up a drawer
  • take back control over “stuff” and taste freedom
  • subtract an item before adding an item
  • reap the rewards of prioritizing time and space
Better than a how–to show, this compact resource can go anywhere a reader needs a little encouragement and lots of tips to transform clutter to cleaner at home, a friend’s house, church, or the office.

The House that Cleans Itself
The House That Cleans Itself is a true housekeeping guide for the housekeeping–impaired! It boldly takes on the reasons behind chronic messiness and why ordinary home–organization books won’t work. Using the methods of “horizontal thinking,” this book teaches readers how to set up a home so efficiently and logically that it seems to clean itself.

More than a how–to book, The House That Cleans Itself also looks at what God has to say about cleanliness and order, and how He can inspire order in every reader’s life in a fresh and unique way. For added fun, some of the tips Mindy uses come from research for her popular novels, The Trouble with Tulip, Blind Dates Can Be Murder, and Elementary, My Dear Watkins.

Here are some searches to keep you going, with many more titles that I could cover, although I'll try to include some of the more interesting ones in the next day or two, if they are still on sale

Keep in mind that all Kindle devices and apps can read a Kindle Edition with Audio/Video, but only iThings will have access to the enhanced content.
Book Description
Bernhard Schlink is the bestselling author of "The Reader." His new book, "The Weekend," tells the story of a group of people involved in the political upheaval in Germany in the 1970s and how it affects their lives today. In this Vook, he reflects on terror, politics and his writing process. Bernhard's reflections are paired with chapters from the novel to give insight into the history behind the story. As a special bonus at the end of this Vook, read Bernard Schlink's short story "A Little Fling."

The plot of "The Weekend" revolves around a group of old friends and lovers who reunite for a weekend in a secluded country home after spending decades apart. They excavate old memories and pass clandestine judgments on the wildly divergent paths they’ve taken since their youth. But this isn’t just any reunion, and their conversations about the old days aren’t your typical reminiscences: After twenty-four years, Jörg, a convicted murderer and terrorist, has been released from prison. The announcement of his pardon sends shock waves throughout the country, but before the announcement, his friends—some of whom were Baader-Meinhof sympathizers or those who clung to them—gather for his first weekend of freedom.

First up, seven free editions of Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol ($9.95 Amazon) that have been gathered together by LearnOutLoud (although one of the editions is one I told you about earlier this month). Some of these require an account and are only free for a limited time, so don't dawdle.
Book Description
A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens first published by Chapman and Hall and first released on 19 December 1843. The story tells of sour and stingy Ebenezer Scrooge's ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation after the supernatural visitations of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim.

The book was written and published at a time when Britain was experiencing a nostalgic interest in its forgotten Christmas traditions, and at the time when new customs such as the Christmas tree and greeting cards were being introduced. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied but are principally the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and the Christmas stories of Washington Irving.

The tale was pirated immediately, was adapted several times to the stage, and has been credited with restoring the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and somberness. A Christmas Carol remains popular, has never been out of print, and has been adapted to film, opera, and other media.

Tantor Audio is offering a free download of both the audiobook and ebook of Favorite Stories of Christmas Past ($11.95 Amazon), by Clement C. Moore, Nora A. Smith, Louisa May Alcott, et al, narrated by Renée Raudman and Alan Sklar.
Book Description
Tantor Media presents a collection of some of the most popular Christmas stories read by award-winning narrators Renee Raudman and Alan Sklar. This special anthology will transport listeners back to the Christmases of their youth, when they first heard these holiday tales. From "'Twas the Night Before Christmas", Clement C. Moore's classic depiction of St. Nicholas at work, to O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi", which embodies the very spirit of Christmas, Favorite Stories of Christmas Past has something for everyone.

Also included is Francis Church's moving editorial response to a little girl's Christmastime query, "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus", as well as seven other Christmas classics that can be heard and shared year after year.

The classics that can be found in Favorite Stories of Christmas Past are: "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement C. Moore; "The Story of Christmas" by Nora A. Smith; "A Country Christmas" by Louisa May Alcott; "An Empty Purse" by Sarah Orne Jewett; "The Bachelor's Christmas" by Robert Grant; "The Fir Tree" by Hans Christian Andersen; "The Birds' Christmas Carol" by Kate Douglas Wiggin; "Yes Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus" by Francis Church; "The Festival of St. Nicholas" by Mary Mapes Dodge; and "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry.

Tantor Audio's second free download is Gulliver's Travels ($19.95 Amazon), by Jonathan Swift, narrated by David Case.
Book Description
In Gulliver's Travels, the narrator represents himself as a reliable reporter of the fantastic adventures he has just experienced. But how far can we rely on a narrator who has been impersonated by someone else? The work purports to be a travel book, and describes the shipwrecked Gulliver's encounters with the inhabitants of four extraordinary places: Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, and the country of the Houyhnhnms. A consumately skillful blend of fantasy and realism makes Gulliver's Travels by turns hilarious, frightening, and profound. This is one of literature's most disturbing satires on the human condition.

Cathy returns to her hometown seeking healing after a broken relationship, but discovers that among her friends and acquaintances is someone who wants her out of town…or dead. Lawyer Will Kennedy, her high school sweetheart, offers help, but does it carry a price tag? Is hospital chief of staff Dr. Marcus Bell really on her side in her fight to get hospital privileges? Is Will’s father, Pastor Matthew Kennedy, interested in advising her or just trying to get her back to the church she left years ago? When one of Cathy’s prescriptions almost kills the town banker, it sets the stage for a malpractice suit that could end her time in town, if not her career. It’s soon clear that this return home was a prescription for trouble.

Kindle Keyboard on the way out?

Since I first wrote about the holiday sellouts of the $99 Special Offers Kindle Keyboard, another changes has come over the Amazon Kindle Family photo. On any Kindle device page, you usually get a lineup of all the Kindle editions, but now there is another one missing (the DX has been missing for some time). - the Kindle Keyboard, Wi-Fi has completely disappeared. When I first started this post, there were actually a few still in stock (new and refurbished, sold by Amazon), but now those are gone, as well (although you can still get a refurbished Kindle Keyboard, Wi-Fi, includes Special Offers for $89.99, at least right now, you can). Rumors of deep discounts on the Kindle Keyboard, 3G+Wi-Fi, includes Special Offers at various Target stores are all over the Amazon forums, as well, which leads me to believe that the Keyboards are going to be quietly retired.

If you've wanted one for a family member to upgrade or as a backup for reading or web access (the 3G Kindle Keyboards have free 3G web access, while the newer Touch models are all limited to web access via WiFi only), you better act fast. If you are buying for Christmas, you technically have until tomorrow to place your order, but that presumes that they stay in stock. Apparently they have been gone from the UK store for some time, so I don't think it'll be long before we don't see them here anymore, either.

The good news is that Amazon has managed to not sell out of any of the new models of Kindles this year (although it appears a few models are only being shipped to the US right now), unlike in previous years. With them confirming on one of their Twitter feeds that they are selling a million units a week (over three million in the first three weeks of December), that's a welcome change.

Forget Me Not ($1.99), by Jennifer Lowe-anker, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
An insightful and at times wrenching memoir of love lost and love found, set against a backdrop of the world's tallest peaks

In 1999 Jennifer Lowe's husband Alex Lowe died tragically in an avalanche on the Himalayan mountain Shishapangma, leaving her alone to raise three sons. Alex was widely considered one of the greatest modern climbers and the world mourned his loss--Tom Brokaw did a one-hour special for Dateline, and Sting narrated and composed music for a tribute film.

While Jenni and her sons faced the absence of the most important man in their lives, Alex's best friend and longtime climbing partner, Conrad Anker, was dealing with the terrible loss as well as feelings of survivor's guilt. Jenni and Conrad gradually, and unexpectedly, found solace in one another and married in 2001--Conrad is now the adoptive father of the three Lowe children.

Through letters and expedition notes from Alex, Forget Me Not spans continents and tells the story of three people whose lives intertwine to a degree they could never have imagined. Jenni's account takes readers inside a woman's heart and mind as she navigates her shattered life and survives, ultimately finding transformative love through her great loss. From the valleys of Montana to the peaks of the Himalayas, this never-before told story exposes the controversial yet ultimately redemptive power of love.

After Obsession ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Steven E. Wedel and Carrie Jones, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $7.96).

Alan is Courtney's cousin. His family moved to Maine when Courtney's father went missing. It's not just Alan's dark good looks that make him attractive. He is also totally in touch with a kind of spiritual mysticism from his Native American heritage. And it's not long before Aimee has broken up with her boyfriend . . .

But it's not Aimee or Alan who is truly haunted - it's Courtney. In a desperate plea to find her father, Courtney invites a demonic presence into her life. Together, Aimee and Alan must exorcise the ghost, before it devours Courtney - and everything around her.

Free Books (Kindle) - Author Angela Hunt

Birthday surprise!

It's Angela Hunt's birthday, but you get the presents! Afton of Margate Castle, Roanoke, Then Comes Marriage and The Case of the Mystery Mark are all FREE on Kindle today!

These were all originally released in paperback by Christian publishers such as Tyndale House and Zondervan. 15 years ago, but are long long out of print. The first two ran about 500 pages in print, while the last two were much shorter, at about 144 pages. The Case of the Mystery Mark is a title for younger readers (as is the series).
Afton of Margate Castle (Theyn Chronicles #1)
Beautiful, headstrong Afton is taken from her parents at an early age and raised in the castle, a companion to the earl’s daughter. Schooled in the ways of kings and surrounded by splendor, Afton falls in love with the earl’s son, brave, Calhoun, her childhood protector.

But Calhoun’s mother, the Lady Endeline, has much different plans for him than marriage to a villein’s daughter. Suddenly Afton’s world is torn viciously apart. She is cast out of the castle, given to a man she fears and despises as a reward for his loyalty—an all too clear reminder that, for all her dreams, she is nothing but a villein.

Now all she has left is a burning desire for vengeance . . .

Roanoke: The Lost Colony (Keepers of the Ring #1)
In 1587, a fleet of English ships set sail for the Virginia colony. During a storm, one ship became separated from the others and was never seen again. The settlers on board were presumed lost at sea, but there is both historical and legendary evidence that the colonists actually founded the Roanoke colony.

Veteran novelist Hunt ("Theyn Chronicles") reimagines this slice of Colonial history through the eyes of Jocelyn White, a newlywed reluctant to leave her home in England for the wild shores of the New World. White's journey is fraught with danger, but her dependence on God and God's providence carry her safely through. Hunt's engaging historical romance will appeal to fans of B.J. Hoff and Patricia Hickman. Recommended for most collections.

Then Comes Marrisge (novella)
This humorous novella looks at a young couple who reaches their first anniversary to discover that marriage is not what they anticipated. They are forced to take a close and sobering look at their own behavior, at their marriage--and what marriage is really all about. A light-hearted AND serious look at the roller coaster ride of marriage.

Also, like all Amazon sales that use promotional codes, if you have a gift card balance, you must use it for the payment - if you have more than a $100 balance, you may need to call and have your gift balance frozen while you enter the order; if you have less, whatever is there is used up first (so, you could put, say $89 on your Visa and apply it to your account as a gift card, then pay the remainder using your Mastercard).

You can use this one on any physical products sold by Amazon.com. You can't use it to buy gift cards, on any type of digital download or use it with one-click purchases (you must go thru the checkout process in order to enter the code) or on third-party merchants. You do not have to restrict yourself to the toys or other items shown at the bottom of the page. So, if you have some Holiday shopping to do, you might want to gather up several items into one order (and get free shipping, too) and use the code to get $10 off now and $10 off another order, later on.

This is a repeat of the last Mastercard Day and looks to have the same rules, so you know how it works, by now.

Book Description
Their first meeting could have been better. He ran into her and her hot coffee, and raced off with a burn and a snarl.

Their second meeting should have been better. He lay naked, face down on her massage table while she stared at him in horror. Being sexually attracted to Mr. Tall, Dark and Rude hadn't been on her agenda. She just wants him out of her massage clinic before he recognizes her or she says something obnoxious before jumping that sexy body. Not professional. Not at all.

But when Shelby Vanzant and Shane Collins meet again, the third time's the charm. Shane has found his match, a sexy, intelligent woman he can't stop thinking about. Shelby is scared, because she might grow to like this guy. The last guy she liked dumped her for someone hotter. She's willing to take a chance--maybe--if her flamboyant mother, Shane's macho best friend and his Casanova of a younger brother don't screw things up. With fate on their side, they might both have a shot at a love they'd stopped looking for.
