Contest - Win a Kindle Fire, Day 3 (and some free books)

Update: The winners have been announced. Make sure you contact Scott if your name is on the list or they'll have to draw someone else.

Update: This blog post's entries are now closed.
It's the last day of the Kindle Fire Contest, so (of course), the rules are changing on how to enter. First off - you don't have to use Facebook (in fact, the contest has spread so much on Facebook, that they would prefer we not mention it there, today) and you don't have to "like" or "share" the books from the Amazon site (just pop over there to pick up the newly free books for the day).

Instead, just tell someone about the contest and link them here to this blog. You can do that in any forum (that allows such things), in an email to your family, on Twitter or any other way that you can think of. Let them know that the links are here for the free books (and that they won't be free after today, at least, not all as a single group as they are now). Then, leave a comment on this blog post (if you subscribe via email, you'll need to visit the website for this part), with some method of contacting you, in case you win.

If you want additional entries, you can follow the directions on the main contest page (no need to leave a comment here on those).

Note that I'm setting up this post ahead of time (once again), before the price drops have appeared at Amazon (they've been dropping sometime around 4AM the last few days). Be sure to double check the price on the linked Amazon pages to make sure the book is truly free before one-clicking. Some of these are repeats, so I've bolded the ones that are new today.

Free Book - Robert E. Lee (K)

Robert E. Lee: The Last Cavalier, by Willard Sterne Randall, and Nancy Nahra, is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of New Word City. It's likely to only be free today, as seems to be their new marketing scheme this month.
Book Description
Born the son of a wastrel Revolutionary War hero, Robert E. Lee grew up in genteel poverty, only attending West Point because it was tuition-free. He distinguished himself for valor in the Mexican War. Although he was subsequently offered command of all Union forces in the Civil War, he refused to fight against his fellow Virginians and instead took command of Confederate forces. This fascinating book gives new insight into both Lee’s character and the strategies that ultimately determined the outcome of the Civil War.

Free Book - Dwight Eisenhower, A Life (K)

Dwight Eisenhower, A Life is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of New Word City. It's likely to only be free today, as seems to be their new marketing scheme this month.
Book Description
President Dwight D. Eisenhower is largely remembered as the genial, smiling face of placid 1950s America. But his life and accomplishments - he wrestled with the Cold War, McCarthyism, and school desegregation, among other hot-button issues - tell a far more complex story. Here is his surprising and inspiring story.

Free Book - Leadership (K)

Leadership: The West Point Lecture, by William Deresiewicz, is free in the Kindle store, courtesy of New Word City. It's likely to only be free today, as seems to be their new marketing scheme this month.
Book Description
When former Yale University professor William Deresiewicz delivered a lecture at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2009, he never anticipated the response it would generate. Since then, he has received requests to use his lecture from the Army Command and General Staff College; the Naval War College; the Air Force Weapons School; the Defense Department’s Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation; the Army’s University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies; the business schools at Stanford, the University of Chicago, the University of California, San Diego, and the University of California, Irvine; the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health; King Saud University; Zayed University in Abu Dhabi; the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad; and Whirlpool, Boeing, Verizon, Alcatel-Lucent, and United Technologies. The speech even elicited a note of appreciation from General David Petraeus. Here are the words that inspired so many.
Note: The synopsis the publisher has used at Amazon seems to have little to do with the actual book, which isn't on friendship, but is a lecture on leadership delivered at West Point.

Free Book - Evernight (K/N/E)

Update: 3/1/12 Now free from Sony.
Update: 2/21/12 Now free from Barnes & Noble.

Just like Dangerous Angels, the free pre-order for Claudia Gray's Evernight with Bonus Materials popped up in December, then disappeared later that same day. This is the first title in the young adult Evernight series and is now (once again) free to pre-order in the Kindle store. I don't expect to see it in other stores, though, until closer to the Feb 21 release date.

Book Description
For a limited time, Claudia Gray’s star-crossed paranormal romance Evernight is available with a special sneak peek of Balthazar, the upcoming Evernight companion novel, and excerpts of the rest of the Evernight series, including Stargazer, Hourglass, and Afterlife.

Bianca wants to escape.

She's been uprooted from her small hometown and enrolled at Evernight Academy, an eerie Gothic boarding school where the students are somehow too perfect: smart, sleek, and almost predatory. Bianca knows she doesn't fit in.

Then she meets Lucas. He's not the "Evernight type" either, and he likes it that way. Lucas ignores the rules, stands up to the snobs, and warns Bianca to be careful—even when it comes to caring about him.

"I couldn't stand it if they took it out on you," he tells Bianca, "and eventually they would."

But the connection between Bianca and Lucas can't be denied. Bianca will risk anything to be with Lucas, but dark secrets are fated to tear them apart . . . and to make Bianca question everything she's ever believed.
