Free Book (EPUB) - The Goddess Of Fried Okra

The Goddess Of Fried Okra ($8.59 Kindle), by Jean Brashear, is free in the Kobo eBookstore. This book has previously been free on Kindle (Jul '10).

Book Description
Grief. Hope. Love. Sword fights. And the crisp glory of fried okra. Ex-cocktail waitress and "convenience story professional" Eudora "Pea" O'Brien is filled with grief and regret, low on cash and all alone. Headed down the hot, dusty back roads of central Texas, Pea is convinced she'll find a sign leading her to the reincarnated soul of the sister who raised her. A sign that she's found her place in the world of the living again. At least that's what the psychic promised. In an unforgettably funny and poignant journey, Pea collects an unlikely family of strays-a starving kitten, a pregnant teenager, a sexy con man trying to go straight, and a ferocious gun dealer named Glory, who introduces Pea to the amazing, sword-wielding warrior goddesses of Texas author Robert E. Howard-creator of the Conan the Barbarian novels-and celebrated in festival every year. Six foot tall, red-headed Pea looks good with a sword in her hand. Glory, the goddesses, and a grandmotherly café owner become Pea's unlikely gurus as she struggles to learn swordplay and the art of perfect fried okra. She'll have to master both if she's going to find what matters most-her own lost soul.

Practically Free Book (Kindle/nook) - The Center of Everything

Update: Also a penny at B&N (Thanks, Kirsty!) and now linked below.

The Center of Everything ($0.01), by Laura Moriarty, is the closest you can get to free in the Kindle store, but still get charged. At least with my gift balance, the credit card company won't complain about the one penny charge.

Book Description
In Laura Moriarty's extraordinary first novel, a young girl tries to make sense of an unruly world spinning around her. Growing up with a single mother who is chronically out of work and dating a married man, 10-year old Evelyn Bucknow learns early how to fend for herself. Offering an affecting portrayal of a troubled mother/daughter relationship, one in which the daughter is very often expected to play the role of the adult, the novel also gives readers a searing rendering of the claustrophobia of small town midwestern life, as seen through the eyes of a teenage girl. Evelyn must come to terms with the heartbreaking lesson of first love--that not all loves are meant to be--and determine who she is and who she wants to be. Stuck in the middle of Kansas, between best friends, and in the midst of her mother's love, Evelyn finds herself...in The Center of Everything.

KSO - $1 MP3 Album

If you have your Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers, be sure to wake it up and check the Special Offers page today. Today's deal, which you must sign up for by May 8, is an MP3 album for $1. You can, in fact, use this promotion on ANY album in the MP3 store - for those priced over $9.00, you'll get a flat $8.00 discount. I just checked the list that Amazon supplied and there are ONLY 1,243,203 albums to choose from (ranging in price from $1.01 to $9.00 -- but I'd go with one closer to $9, to get the most bang for your buck). Luckily, you can use the genre selectors on the side to narrow down your choices, then sort by bestselling, price, artist or title, to help make you selection.

To take advantage of this offer:
  1. First, turn on your Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers, click Menu, then View Special Offers.
  2. Find the offer: $1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 store. Click on it, then on the link to Email Me This Offer.
  3. You will get an email from Amazon, confirming your participation, which promises to send you the redemption code within seven business days (I'm still waiting on mine, so don't expect it immediately).
  4. Once you have the promotion code, click this link, then on the button labeled Enter Your Code.
  5. Enter your code and follow the directions.
  6. Choose any of  these albums for free or shop the entire Amazon MP3 store with an $8 discount for albums over $9.00.
You'll have a promotion code on your account that will apply to the FIRST album you buy after that. So, make sure you don't go grabbing some low cost single title album, right away. You can actually save the code and not enter it until you are ready to buy an album, up to the expiration date of August 8.  When you buy an album, you should see on the confirmation page before the order is placed, that the album price is being adjusted down to zero (or at $8.00 less than the regular price, for those over $9).

To recap: you must claim the offer by May 8 and must do so from your Kindle Wi-Fi with Special Offers. You'll get a promotion code via email, within seven days. You have until August 8 to enter and redeem the code and once you enter it, it will work on the next album you purchase.
