Six Free Books from Sony

Six more free titles in the Sony ebookstore, courtesy of Xlibris Publishing.

The Urban Book of the Dead ($9.99 Kindle), by Jonathan Cottam

Book Description
Urban Book of the dead is my second book to be published, after ‘The Unrequited Zombie’. It is a rather less experimental work, though still unusual, vivid, and descriptive. I would describe the book as both psychedelic and surreal, being rather pedantic about the use of those two words. That is, if it were surreal I would be dealing with a psychological work, something that looked towards expanding knowledge of the Id, that primitive part of our nature that is repressed by social conventions and the need to plan to get what we want. It is, in that it is self gratifying without recourse to opinion, it is every animalistic urge that can only be released through art, because to do it any other way would have terrible repercussions. Having said that, next to my early work, it is not particularly arty or deep. It is psychedelic because it looks to reaching a higher consciousness by through creativity, to reach a state beyond the normal level of seeing things, it is also psychedelic and surreal in the commonly understood sense, it is ‘trippy’ and sometimes deals with drugs.

Through flashbacks of the adulterous years preceding Jasper's arrest and trial, we encounter cold-blooded murders, corporate fraud and embezzlement, and justified rape. In his journey, Jasper affiliates with seemingly faithful lovers and underworld cohorts who become jointly entangled in their common goal-the pursuit of wealth, sex, and power. What Every Catholic Should Know about Mary: Dogmas, Doctrines, and Devotions ($9.99 Kindle), by Terrence J. McNally

Book Description
This book provides a concise summary of Traditional Catholic Mariology. It explains the following facts:
• Jesus worked his first miracle for Mary (Jn 2:1–11).
• Mary kept the faith of the Church alive on Calvary (Jn 19:25–27).
• By 200 CE, Catholic Mariology was virtually completed.
• Early Christians painted pictures of Mary in the catacombs.
• The earliest prayer to Mary dates from c. 270 CE.
• Between 100 and 200 CE, a church was dedicated to Mary at Nazareth.
• In the 350s, the feast of the Assumption of Mary was celebrated on August 15.
• In 431 CE, the Church proclaimed Mary Mother of God.
• Marian devotion is Christ-centered and presupposes conversion of heart.
• Catholic Marian teaching derives from the Bible and Tradition (the apostles as witnessed by the Fathers of the Church).
• The four Marian dogmas are the Divine Maternity, Perpetual Virginity, Immaculate Conception, and Assumption into heaven. The Church never defined dogmas of Mary as Co-Redemptrix and/or Mediatrix of all graces.
• In heaven, Mary shares subordinately in the mediation of Jesus Christ, the only Mediator.
• The rosary is 57 percent biblical.

Free Book (Sony) - The Beginning... the End... Anew!

The Beginning... the End... Anew! ($9.99 Kindle), by Zedart Hodges, is another selection from XLibris (which appears to specialize in self-pulished authors) that is free in the Sony ebookstore this evening. This one is marked as a religious, motivational memoir.

Book Description
For sometime I’ve been clean and at times it has been hard, but I think about my love for me and know that I can't and refuse to fall back into that self pity state of denial and that now I understand that it´s not about me also there's a saying that is so true which says in order to keep what you got you must give it away. I hope this will help someone or somebody out there that's beginning to realize that life is bigger than they are and more important to someone else other than you thank you for time.

Free Book (Sony) - Where 45 Ends

Where 45 Ends ($9.99 Kindle), by E. Marie Aldrich-Creasy, is free in the Sony ebookstore.

Book Description
Penning down over two hundred fifty poems, the author opens the windows to her soul through lyrical verse that displays immense emotional power. Each piece in this collection is carved by the emotions of a young woman with whom many others can relate. She vividly captures different events and ideas that a person has to encounter in the journey of life.

The poem “Through It All” is a powerful reminiscence of past hardship and trials. Written in a whimsical yet edifying tone, “What to Say” tells of an unknown story of girls known as bartenders and waitresses. “Back of the Truck” relives the good old days of 1972 racing life, and “Country in Music” expresses how people should return to God and bring hope, faith, and belief back to the rhythm of everyday life. By reading her poem “I Want To Say”, you’ll know where her heart is.

An eloquent delivery of Aldrich-Creasy's philosophies, Where 45 Ends collects pieces of the heart. It is a highly entertaining and inspiring read for readers of any age and life situation.

Free Book - The Shop on Blossom Street

The Shop on Blossom Street ($5.76 Kindle), by Debbie Macomber, is free in the Sony ebookstore (and more, see below) this morning. The first in the Blossom Street series, this looks like a promotion in conjunction with the release today of the seventh volume, Hannah's List ($9.99 Kindle), so I would not be surprised if this one ended up free in the Kindle store. In the meantime, I picked up the Sony version, which I can always read on my PC.

Book Description
There's a little yarn store in Seattle.

It's owned by Lydia Hoffman, and it represents her dream of a new life free from cancer. A life that offers a chance at love...

Lydia teaches knitting to beginners, and the first class is "How to Make a Baby Blanket." Three women join. Jacqueline Donovan wants to knit something for her grandchild as a gesture of reconciliation with her daughter-in-law. Carol Girard feels that the baby blanket is a message of hope as she makes a final attempt to conceive. And Alix Townsend is knitting her blanket for a court-ordered community service project.

These four very different women, brought together by an age-old craft, make unexpected discoveries--about themselves and each other. Discoveries that lead to friendship and more...

As always with Sony titles, you'll need to open the Reader Library software and search for it in the bookstore.

Update: This book is also free at Barnes & Noble and at All Romance Ebooks, where it is is in many formats: Adobe Acrobat, Palm DOC/iSolo, Microsoft Reader, HTML, Mobipocket, Epub. Which means it'll work on your Kindle and pretty much any other reader out there, with a bit of work. The EPUB and LIT (MS Reader) versions are both DRM free (the mobipocket version claims to have DRM, so I haven't opened it), so are easily converted using Calibre to any other format desired.

Free Book (Sony/nook) - Savior

Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith #4: Savior ($0.80 Kindle), by John Jackson Miller, is free in both the Sony and Barnes & Noble ebookstores today. Since the original intention was for the entire series to be published as free, I suspect the Kindle version will drop as well within a few days.

Book Description
Twenty-five years ago the survivors of the marooned Sith ship Omen bloodlessly conquered the native population of the remote planet Kesh, installing themselves as overlords and transforming the primitive Keshiri civilization into a new Sith society. Letting nothing stand in his way-including his own brother-s life-Omen commander-turned-Grand Lord Yaru Korsin has ruled unopposed ever since. But now his days, and those of the ruthless Sith order on Kesh, may be numbered.Revolt-and revenge-have been brewing in the hearts of the two women closest to Korsin. One is Adari Vaal, the once-outcast Keshiri who rescued the stranded Sith, aided their domination of Kesh, and now leads the secret resistance against them. The other is Seelah, wife of Korsin, widow of his murdered brother, and mastermind of the plot to assassinate the Grand Lord and seize power. But have the comforts of a king and his own arrogance blunted Korsin-s cunning Sith instincts? Or is he ready to deal swiftly and mercilessly with treachery from any quarter? Enemies themselves, Adari and Seelah are unaware of each other-s destiny-altering gambits. They only know that there can be no turning back-and no escaping the consequences if they fail.

Free Book (Sony) - In the Beginning: Hijacking of the Religion of God

Two free books in the Sony ebookstore this morning. As always, you'll need to use their reader software and search by title or author to find the book, as direct links won't work. These are the first two of a three-volume set, although I don't see the third book in the series in the Sony store yet, although you can get it as a Barnes & Noble ebook. None are available for the Kindle (yet), although the first volume is in the Amazon store in hardcover and paperback.

In the Beginning: Hijacking of the Religion of God, Volume 1: Judaism ($19.99 Paperback; $7.99 B&N ebook), by Sami M. El-Soudani & Nabawia J. El-Soudani (Illustrator)

Book Description
Our analysis of three millennia of religious history shows that “the Religion of God” has been hijacked right from the beginning until this day. Men who practiced hijacking long before they had wings have been engaging in the lucrative business of hijacking the religion of God, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, whose members miserably failed to heed the words of our Merciful God.

No irony intended in calling it “a business” and indeed “a lucrative one,” because it brings the hijackers power, enormous wealth, and often glory, which, in the sight of God, translate respectively into arrogance, greed, and infamy.

The author hopes that this presentation of a uniquely critical and candid outlook on religion will be widely disseminated to such people in search of God. This book may also appeal to readers engaged in studies of systems of government, and history of political science.

In the Beginning: Hijacking of the Religion of God, Volume 2: Christianity ($7.99 B&N ebook), by Sami M. El-Soudani & Nabawia J. El-Soudani (Illustrator)

Book Description
This volume illustrates how Jesus of Nazareth was morphed into the Son of God shortly upon his death. Sami M. El-Soudani presents the hijacking of Christianity in a diagram that summarizes how the Christian community was led to believe in a myth created over time.

Free Book (Sony) - Spirit's Release

It's misspelled in the bookstore, so search for Spirit's Release, by Tea Trelawny, using the author's name or ISBN in the Sony Bookstore. This one is from Ellora's Cave, so I'd classify it as erotica. Also, despite the file size (256K), it's a very short read of about 24 pages.

Book Description
Sex generates enough energy for ghosts to manifest. That's Dera's theory, and the sultry ghost hunter wants to test it with her sexy ex-boss.

Alec repressed his hunger for Dera when she worked for him, but three years later she wants to use his body for paranormal research...and use it hard. If raw sex can save his new business from the ghost that threatens it, it's all in the name of science, right? The fact that his partner will be delicious Dera only makes the experiment more enticing. But will the ghost cooperate...or get in the way?

Knitting Under the Influence, by Claire LaZebnik

Book Description
When you're in your late twenties and nothing in your life seems to be falling into place, knitting is an awfully seductive way to spend your free time. After all, as long as you're following the instructions, you can knit row after row with the knowledge that the pattern will emerge and you'll end up with just what you wanted. Life, on the other hand, doesn't come with a stitch counter, so Kathleen, Sari, and Lucy, the heroines of Knitting Under the Influence, just have to figure things out as they go along.

Their weekly Sunday knitting circle is the only thing holding them together as Kathleen is cut off financially by her family and forced to enter "the real world" for the very first time at the age of twenty-seven, Sari finds herself falling for the man who made her life a living hell in high school but who now desperately needs her help, and Lucy finds herself torn between emotion and reason when her lab and her boyfriend are assailed by an animal-rights group.

At their club meetings, they discuss the really important questions: how bad is it, really, to marry for money if you like the guy a lot anyway? Can you ever forgive someone for something truly atrocious that they've done? Is it better to be unhappily coupled than happily alone? And the little ones: Can you wear a bra with a hand-knit tube top? Is it ever acceptable to knit something for a boyfriend? And why do your stitches become lopsided after your second martini?

I'm with Stupid, by Elaine Szewczyk

Book Description
A hilarious tale of girl meets boy, girl falls in lust, girl discovers boy is not playing with a full deck...

When Kas meets William while on safari in South Africa he seems perfect-a gorgeous park ranger, both kind and brave (he saved the tour from certain death by water buffalo). Her two best friends, Max, an endlessly scheming personal trainer, and Libby, a jobless bombshell, would like to get their hands on William...but he's only interested in Kas, an editorial assistant at a struggling New York literary agency who thinks William is out of her league. The two have a fling, and Kas returns home to New York wondering if she'll hear from William again. So when he finally sends an email, she's delighted.

Until she opens it.

The email is not quite the love missive Kas expected. Did she misjudge William? A miscommunication ensues, triggering a rapid-fire series of comic developments that, within days, bring William to New York, now under the impression that Kas has offered him a place to live. As he unveils his big plan to take Manhattan by storm and make his fortune, Kas finally recognizes how limited William's intellectual capabilities are: He makes Kevin Federline look like Albert Einstein.

Readers are along for the outrageous ride as Kas copes with her new roommate's eccentricities, including a preoccupation with the Psychic Friends Network and a passion for collecting Big Apple-themed souvenirs, and the realization that her dream man is a comic nightmare.

Book Description
Celebutards. A compound of celebrity, debutante, and retard, this blunt term describes lazy and egotistical stars with too much money, fame, leisure time, and media attention, but too little common sense or knowledge, who love to spout off on topics about which they have zero expertise.

With razor-sharp wit, award-winning New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser explodes the absurdities of the celebutard culture, showing how a dull thinker such as Madonna becomes a self-appointed sage on matters of faith; singer Sheryl Crow urges us to use a single square of toilet paper per wipe while she racks up mileage in her gas-guzzling caravan of SUVs; and hothead Sean Penn morphs into an expert on international diplomacy as he brazenly breaks bread with enemies of his own country like Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. Always outspoken, Peyser pulls no punches in exposing the Hollywood and Washington libtards for the morons they truly are.

Two Three Free Books on Sony

Two Three new free books in the Sony Store today. The links below are to the Amazon versions, so you can read the reviews (remember, for Sony books, you have to open their software and search by title or look in their Bargain Priced section; web links on their store or here won't work for buying Sony books). So far, these are full price at Amazon, but there is some indication that that may change ... if so, I'll repost them as an Amazon deal. Both are now free on Kindle, as well.

Already Dead ($9.99), by Charlie Huston

Update: In addition to being free in the Kindle store, you can get an epub version free at Shortcovers.

Book Description
Those stories you hear? The ones about things that only come out at night? Things that feed on blood, feed on us? Got news for you: they’re true. Only it’s not like the movies or old man Stoker’s storybook. It’s worse. Especially if you happen to be one of them. Just ask Joe Pitt.

There’s a shambler on the loose. Some fool who got himself infected with a flesh-eating bacteria is lurching around, trying to munch on folks’ brains. Joe hates shamblers, but he’s still the one who has to deal with them. That’s just the kind of life he has. Except afterlife might be better word.

From the Battery to the Bronx, and from river to river, Manhattan is crawling with Vampyres. Joe is one of them, and he’s not happy about it. Yeah, he gets to be stronger and faster than you, and he’s tough as nails and hard to kill. But spending his nights trying to score a pint of blood to feed the Vyrus that’s eating at him isn’t his idea of a good time. And Joe doesn’t make it any easier on himself. Going his own way, refusing to ally with the Clans that run the undead underside of Manhattan–it ain’t easy. It’s worse once he gets mixed up with the Coalition–the city’s most powerful Clan–and finds himself searching for a poor little rich girl who’s gone missing in Alphabet City.

Now the Coalition and the girl’s high-society parents are breathing down his neck, anarchist Vampyres are pushing him around, and a crazy Vampyre cult is stalking him. No time to complain, though. Got to find that girl and kill that shambler before the whip comes down . . . and before the sun comes up.

Wit'ch Fire ($6.39), by James Clemens. It turns out that this one also contains Wit'ch Storm (at least in the Sony Store), so you get two full books with one download, which correlates to this title at Amazon (which isn't a bad deal at two books for $6.39): Wit'ch Fire/Storm.

Book Description
Wit'ch Fire: On a fateful night five centuries ago, three mages made a desperate last stand, sacrificing everything to preserve the only hope of goodness in the beautiful, doomed land of Alasea. Now, on the anniversary of that ominous night, a girl-child ripens into the heritage of lost power. But before she can even comprehend her terrible new gift, the Dark Lord dispatches his winged monsters to capture her and bring him the embryonic magic she embodies. Fleeing the minions of darkness, Elena is swept toward certain doom--and into the company of unexpected allies. There she forms a band of the hunted and the cursed, the outcasts and the outlaws, to battle the unstoppable forces of evil and rescue a once-glorious empire...

Wit'ch Storm: Elena bears the mark of the wit'ch upon her palm, the crimson stain that testifies to the awesome power of unimaginable potency: wild, seductive, difficult to control. Only a mistress of blood magick can stand against the foul minions and all-corrupting evil of the Dark Lord. But Elena is not yet the mistress of her magick. Protected by an ageless warrior and a band of renegades, she quests for a lost city where prophecies speak of a mystic tome that holds the key to the Dark Lord's defeat. But if the Dark Lord finds her first, Elena will become his most fearsome weapon. Sy-wen is a girl-child of an ocean-dwelling clan, bond-mates to the terrible and majestic sea dragons. But ancient bonds tie Sy-wen to the land she does not know, to a man she has never seen ... and to a legend asleep in stone deep beneath A'loa Glen--a legend beginning to wake. Now, as Elena and Sy-wen converge on A'loa Glen from land and sea, will the forces they unleash lead to a future of freedom--or an eternity under the Dark Lord's yoke?

Two Free Books on Sony

These are both still pre-orders at Amazon, but can be downloaded for free from Sony (read on your PC or a Sony Reader). They may end up free on Kindle, as well, once released, but there is no guarantee (Sony has had some exclusives, including two others free right now, even though Amazon is far ahead in books given away).

A Catered Birthday Party ($9.99 Kindle), by Isis Crawford

Book Description
When sisters Bernie and Libby Simmons sign on to cater a prize pooch's birthday bash, they think they're ready for anything. But they haven't bargained for a killer with a bone to pick . . .

A Little Taste of Heaven catering certainly knows how to feed people. Dogs, however. . .? Bernie and Libby will have their chance to impress guests of the four-legged variety when they lay out the spread for Trudy the Pug's birthday luncheon. But this isn't just any doggie 'do. Trudy's owner, Annabel Colbert, is one of the richest women in town--and as mascot of the Colbert toy company, Trudy herself is a bona fide celebrity.

When the big day arrives, Trudy and her canine cohorts are ready to dig in to the delicacies--but the first to dip her fangs into the wine is Annabel. Mere moments later, the hostess is shrieking she's been poisoned--and proving it by falling face first into her soup. After two days in a coma, Annabel is dead.

It seems the woman who had everything also had her share of enemies. In fact, Annabel was cheating, blackmailing, or backstabbing most of the people she knew, including her very own best friend, her very own husband, his personal assistant, and last but not least, Trudy's trainer and kennel owner.

With so many suspects, sniffing out the truth is rapidly becoming a tricky, not to mention risky, proposition. Bernie and Libby had better close the oven on this case fast--before they get burned. . .

Hotter After Midnight ($4.47 Kindle), by Cynthia Eden, which is apparently being re-released, as it is already available in the Kindle store for $8.96.

Book Description
A Seductive Nighttime World. . .

Dr. Emily Drake's psychotherapy patients tend to be a little unusual. Instead of midlife crises and mother fixations, Emily treats vampires with blood phobias and sex-demons looking for meaningful relationships. But healing these powerful beings requires an important rule: Never trust a shifter. Especially not one like Detective Colin Gyth, whose gold-flecked eyes and predatory air make Emily realize how much she longs to lose control. . .

A Dark And Dangerous Hunger. . .

Colin can't believe the doctor he has to work with on the Night Butcher murder case is the one person who could expose his true identity as a wolf shifter. Smart and sexy, Emily brings out the alpha male in Colin, unleashing a wild desire that takes them both over the edge. . .. But in the shadows, the Night Butcher waits, eager to spill Emily's blood and taste her terror. And he'll use any means to destroy her, including the one person she has grown to trust. . .

To get these free, start up the Sony Ebook Library Software (it's free) and either search on the titles or try the Bargain Priced section of the Store (all the free books don't show up there, though, so you may have to do a manual search).
