Child's Journey Out of Autism: One Family's Story of Living in Hope and Finding a Cure ($2.39 Kindle, Kobo), by Leeann Whiffen

Book Description
The therapy costs $30,000. We'd be mortgaging our lives and our savings on something we're not even sure could help our son. But the clock is ticking: the longer we wait, the harder it will be to pull him out of this shell. How are we going to afford it? How can we not afford it?

When Clay Whiffen was diagnosed on the autism spectrum, his parents didn't know where to turn. They refused to believe that he could not be cured, and began to try every therapy they could afford - and many they couldn't. In this extraordinary story of one family's struggle with autism, Leeann Whiffen gives voice to the fear of losing a child and the fight to reclaim him, exploring what treatments eased her son Clay's symptoms, where the Whiffens found support, and how the family conquered one of the toughest challenges a child can face.

With a foreword by autism specialist Dr. Bryan Jepson, A Child's Journey out of Autism spells out what treatments worked, where the family found help, and how they made it through this crushing crisis. In a time of despair and confusion - when another child is diagnosed with autism every 20 minutes - this is a profound, proven message of hope for anyone whose life is touched by the disorder.

The pre-order for A Pizza To Die For, by Chris Cavender, has dropped to 99 cents at Amazon, matching the pre-order price at B&N.

Book Description
Though it's an unseasonably chilly October in Timber Ridge, North Carolina, Eleanor Swift is warm and cozy in A Slice of Delight--her scrumptious pizzeria. But when snooty Judson Sizemore breezes into town to open an upper-crust pizza parlor nearby, Eleanor's biggest worry is that her beloved restaurant's days may be numbered. . .until she hears Judson's days have come to a most gruesome end. . .

Since half the town saw Judson causing a ruckus in A Slice of Delight before he expired, Eleanor and her saucy sister, Maddie, are the prime suspects. The only way out is to prove their innocence. Soon, a little surreptitious sleuthing reveals that the dough behind Judson's impending pizzeria came from Timber Ridge's resident recluse: crusty oddball millionaire Nathan Pane. It turns out he's Judson's long-lost uncle. . .and someone is after him, too.

As Eleanor digs deeper, her suspect list grows longer than the local soccer team's pizza order--and life in the once quiet town heats up like Maddie's five-alarm Volcano pie. Could it be Judson's gold-digging sister? Or her secret boyfriend? Between working on the case, keeping her customers happy, and even finding time for an old flame, Eleanor's plate is full. But with an unhinged murderer closing in, she'll have to move very quickly--and very carefully--because the killer is already much closer than she thinks. . .

Includes delicious pizza recipe!

A Slice of Murder ($0.99), by Chris Cavender, is the first in the same series and has just been dropped to this price at Amazon.

Book Description
Not too much happens in the sleepy little town of Timber Ridge, North Carolina--which is fine with pizza-purveyor extraordinaire Eleanor Swift. The spunky owner of A Slice of Delight is trying to mend her broken heart and could use a little quiet time. But when a late night delivery customer turns up dead, she's in for just the opposite in this delicious mystery series debut, featuring pizza as the prima character . . .

You can pre-order a special edition of Once Dead, Twice Shy ($1.99), the first in the Madison Avery series by Kim Harrison, that will include excerpts from her other novels (one of which is bound to be the upcoming Something Deadly This Way Comes in this same series; ignore the description on the Amazon product page on this one, as HarperCollins linked in the middle novel in the series for the description). You can sample this one from the $7.99 edition, but if this young adult series is anything like her adult urban fantasy series, it's a can't miss selection.

Book Description
Step into another realm! Enjoy the complete Once Dead, Twice Shy along with excerpts from two other novels by bestselling author Kim Harrison.

My name is Madison Avery, and I'm here to tell you that there's more out there than you can see, hear, or touch. Because I'm there. Seeing it. Touching it. Living it.

Madison's prom was killer—literally. Now, thanks to a mysterious amulet, she's stuck on Earth: dead but not gone. She has no idea why the dark reaper who did her in was after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course. With a little skilled light-bending, the help of a light reaper (one of the good guys . . . maybe), her cute crush, and oh yeah, her guardian angel, Madison's ready to take control of her own destiny once and for all, before it takes control of her.

Well, if she believed in that stuff.

Although the list price is higher than with Amazon (£4.49), if you buy two or more books, you can use coupon code clarke11 to get 50% off the total order (thru May 9). An astonishing second novel from the author of the highly-acclaimed Moxyland.

If you are looking for a second (or third) title at AngryRobots, let me suggest City of Dreams & Nightmare ($4.79 Kindle, Kobo), by Ian Whates, along with the second in the City of a Hundred Rows series, City of Hope & Despair ($4.69 Kindle, Kobo). This is the book I'm currently reading (a review copy from the publisher), and it is quite good. I'd put this one in the young adult (but not pre-teen) category, but it is equally suitable for adults of any age (there are both teens and adult main characters, but some themes are not for younger children). I'm over half done and expect to finish it this weekend.

New Kindle App - Calendar Pro

Calendar Pro (A Schedule Tool for Kindle) ($0.99), by Jujuba Software, is a new app for Kindle this morning. There have been a number of Kindle "books" that tried to fill the need for a calendar on Kindle, but this is the first Active Content app in that arena. So far there are two reviews, one of which is 5-star and almost reads as if it was written by an employee of the company that developed the app (it's a glowing review), while the other is one-star and is complaining about not being able to buy the app outside the US. I guess these one-star complainers haven't noticed that the availability isn't up to the developers - none of the Kindle apps are available outside the US and I suspect it's because of US technology export laws, not some unwillingness to allow people to get the apps on the part of Amazon or the developers (some of whom are not even US companies, in the first place, and can't buy their own apps in the Kindle store).

App Description
Calendar Pro is a calendar for Kindle.

Calendar Pro allows you to create events, edit existing events, and view these events by day, month, or year. You can create multiple events within a day, month, or year, and events can overlap, be a full day in length, or extend for multiple days. Each event can also be personalized with a title, location, description, and time.

Upcoming appointments are visible in the Agenda View, and you can quickly change the period you are viewing with the page turn buttons. Calendar Pro is easy to use, and each screen has a help page that describes controls and keyboard shortcuts.

Organize your day with Calendar Pro!

Free Book (noDRM) - Sons Of The Great Satan

Sons Of The Great Satan ($2.99 Kindle), by Anthony Roberts, is free on Smashwords, tonight only, using coupon code SJ82P.

Book Description
When American teenager Joey Andrews and his family arrive in Tehran, Iran in 1976 they find an expatriate paradise within one of the world's oldest civilizations. Through the bold and imperious leadership of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, this ancient land is thrust into the modern age bringing great progress to some and seething resentment to others. It is the twilight of an empire, the last golden hours before the fall of darkness.

SONS OF THE GREAT SATAN leads the reader through a cataclysmic event as seen through the lives of the Andrews family of Peligrosa, Texas and the Zadehs of Tehran, Iran. Joey Andrews and Farhad Zadeh form a friendship amid a naive wonderland of teenage sex, drugs and rock'n'roll that explodes into a firestorm that rocks a nation.

As a work of historical fiction, SONS OF THE GREAT SATAN is a tale of culture clash, international politics, heroism, friendship, cowardice and sinister betrayal. The character and beliefs of the Shah of Iran, President Jimmy Carter and the Ayatollah Khomeini are all put to the test as the whirlwind of chaos engulfs them all. The actions of these powerful men play out on the world stage and forever change the lives of those who called Tehran home in the late 1970s.

The paths of Iran and America have been intricately bound by blood and violence for many decades. What happened between these two nations continues to reverberate today.

SONS OF THE GREAT SATAN is based on the author's impressions as a teenager living in Iran prior to the Islamic revolution. All of the characters, organizations and events portrayed in this work are either products of the author's imagination or are used fictionally.
