Free Paperback - Alex Detail's Revolution

Alex Detail's Revolution, a young adult Choose Your Destiny novel by Darren Campo, is free as a paperback from Amazon. Regular shipping rules, though, so if you don't have Prime or another free delivery plan from Amazon, you'll need to get up to $25 for free delivery. The Kindle edition, if you'd prefer it, is also marked down to $2.99 for now. This is a limited time (and probably limited copy) promotion, but there doesn't seem to be a limit to how many you can order from one account (I've ordered one for me and sent another to nieces for Xmas).

Book Description
17 year old Alex Detail has been kidnapped and sent off to fight in a hopeless war against The Harvesters, an alien force that is trying to extinguish Earth's Sun.

Unfortunately for Alex's kidnappers (and the world) he has lost the mega IQ that allowed him to win the last war with The Harvesters ten years ago when he was just 7 years old.

But now the House of Nations is out of options. The end of life is imminent.

Alex must save his ship, fight his evil clone and survive the war long enough to make it to Pluto, where, underneath the planets frozen surface lies the only force in the solar system that can stop The Harvesters.

Oprah's Book Pick: Charles Dickens

Well, Oprah's book pick has been released and it's a double volume from Charles Dickens: A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations: Two Novels (Oprah's Book Club) ($7.99 Kindle, $11.00 Paperback). This is an enriched edition from Penguin, not a barebones scan from Gutenberg (more about those later). In a major break from the usual pricing we've seen from the Agency 5, this edition is fairly reasonably priced for the Kindle edition (and Amazon is deeply discounting the paperback, which lists at $20, charging just a dollar over what they pay to Penguin, if they have the usual 50% wholesale rate on it).

Book Description
A TALE OF TWO CITIES
After eighteen years as a political prisoner in the Bastille, the ageing Doctor Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There the lives of the two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil roads of London, they are drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror, and they soon fall under the lethal shadow of the guillotine.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS
A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor—these form a series of events that changes the orphaned Pip’s life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble origins to begin a new life as a gentleman. Dickens’s haunting late novel depicts Pip’s education and development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his “great expectations.”

This enriched edition includes: illustrations of 18th century fashion and culture in Dickens’s Victorian world, the early reception for both A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations, a filmography of Dickens’s novels, further reading about the author as well as what informed the thematic elements of these classic novels.

I love the cover picture shown on this free edition of A Tale of Two Cities at Amazon (even if it probably isn't in the actual Kindle book). I didn't actually download this one (although at least the description implies it isn't _just_ a Gutenberg scan, as someone took the time to add a description), as I instead downloaded the free, illustrated edition by MobileRead member HarryT.

There is a free edition of Great Expectations at Amazon as well, but again I skipped this one and again downloaded the free, illustrated edition by MobileRead member HarryT.

These are not the only Charles Dickens books (or formats) available at MobileRead, either, where the members hand-convert many public domain texts (with and without illustrations). For Charles Dickens, alone, I found 34 Mobi formatted books and 33 EPUBs, including Christmas Stories (Illustrated) and Christmas Books (Illustrated). The first is a collection of short stories and the second his five "christmasy" novels.

Will Kindle Sell Out Today? Another Oprah Pick!

Rumor has it that Oprah will give everyone in her audience a Kindle again today. There's no word if she'll repeat the coupon code of a previous show, but with prices as low as they are now, I doubt that'll happen. What did happen last time, though, is that the Kindle sold out within a day. Adding fuel to the fire, on tomorrow's show, she is going to announce the new Oprah Book Pick and it must be one that is available for the Kindle, as Amazon is hyping the show on their Facebook page.

International customers have already faced a sellout of Kindles for the holidays (except the Kindle DX) and the current wait is still projected at 5-7 weeks, so about mid-to-late January is when those who order now will start seeing their Kindles in the mail. Those in the UK are starting to see some slight delays in shipping (up to a week for the Wi-Fi only model). So far, US models are both showing as in-stock for next day delivery. In the past, this has been the case right up until the instant they go out of stock and have a long back-order period.

If you were already planning on getting a Kindle for the holidays, but haven't ordered yet, I recommend that you don't wait. For international readers, you  have only two choices: get a Kindle DX  (which is still in stock for international orders) or use a remailing service that will handle the customs fees and paperwork and order one of the US models that way (the only difference is the charging adapter, which you order separately; with a US model, you don't get a discounted price on that item). Those in the UK should definitely not delay, as the current backlog could quickly grow to beyond Christmas delivery.

Here are the links for those looking to have one of these under the tree this year:

First up, one for those boycotting Christmas: Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us ($1.99 Kindle, B&N, Kobo), by Allen Salkin

Book Description
Looking to add a little bitterness to your holiday season? Then FESTIVUS is the book you cannot do without!

Take Frosty out behind the woodshed and hide your menorahs, kinaras, diyas and whatevahs…the time has come for Festivus! The event celebrated by Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller) on Seinfeld, in which a bare aluminum pole replaces all holiday and religious symbols, where participants compete in "feats of strength" and undertake the "airing of grievances," has transcended television to become a worldwide phenomenon. In this side-splitting romp through the Festivus landscape, Allen Salkin meets Miss Festivus, tastes Festivus beer, and ponders the Festivus snail (along with Festy the cat), showing how anyone with a little creativity-and a dash of Costanza-can celebrate a Happy Festivus!

My Man Plautus: Learn how (and dear God, why?) the ancient Romans invented Festivus.

Mom, is that you? Peruse dozens of photos and illustrations of Festivus celebrants in their natural habitat.

Be sure to wash the nails: Learn to cook tasty Festivus recipes like Shrimp impaled on mini Festivus poles and Ham with Junior Mint and Snapple glaze.

There she is, Miss Festivus! Criteria for judging your own Miss Festivus contest (hint: the abilities to bowl a 170 and clean a carburetor count big).

Are those my chestnuts roasting? Lyrics and chords to that surefire smash "O Festivus!"and the chart-topping hit all the kids are singing: "Gather 'Round the Pole."

No fire hazards here: Tips on acquiring a gloriously inflammable aluminum pole.

A foreword by Father Festivus himself, Jerry Stiller! See why Festivus is more fun than being killed by a giant boulder.

One movie we watch ever year during the holidays is A Christmas Story. Now you can get "The Book That Inspired the Hilarious Classic Film" ($3.89 Kindle, Kobo; $3.99 B&N), by Jean Shepherd.

Book Description
A beloved, bestselling classic of humorous and nostalgic Americana—the book that inspired the equally classic Yuletide film.

The holiday film A Christmas Story, first released in 1983, has become a bona fide Christmas perennial, gaining in stature and fame with each succeeding year. Its affectionate, wacky, and wryly realistic portrayal of an American family’s typical Christmas joys and travails in small-town Depression-era Indiana has entered our imagination and our hearts with a force equal to It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street.

This edition of A Christmas Story gathers together in one hilarious volume the gems of autobiographical humor that Jean Shepherd drew upon to create this enduring film. Here is young Ralphie Parker’s shocking discovery that his decoder ring is really a device to promote Ovaltine; his mother and father’s pitched battle over the fate of a lascivious leg lamp; the unleashed and unnerving savagery of Ralphie’s duel in the show with the odious bullies Scut Farkas and Grover Dill; and, most crucially, Ralphie’s unstoppable campaign to get Santa—or anyone else—to give him a Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle. Who cares that the whole adult world is telling him, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid”?

The pieces that comprise A Christmas Story, previously published in the larger collections In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash and Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories, coalesce in a magical fashion to become an irresistible piece of Americana, quite the equal of the film in its ability to warm the heart and tickle the funny bone.

The Christmas Bus ($4.69 Kindle, Kobo; $4.79 B&N), by Melody Carlson, seems to go on sale every year about this time, but this is the first time I've noticed a drop on The Christmas Dog ($4.69 Kindle, Kobo; $4.79 B&N), which was nearly $10 just last month. For an even better deal, pick up one of her two anthologies, The Treasure of Christmas: A 3-in-1 Collection and The Joy of Christmas: A 3-in-1 Collection ($9.99 each).

Christmas Dog
Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations? Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet. But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

Christmas Bus
The people of Christmas Valley always celebrate Christmas to the fullest extent. The mayor plays Santa, every business is holiday themed, and there's a nativity for the kids each Christmas Eve. This town knows Christmas. But this year nothing goes according to plan. Shepherd's Inn is full of strangers, Mad Myrtle is causing problems, and a young couple with a baby due any minute rolls in to the middle of town in their Partridge Family-style bus. It's hardly the holiday Christmas Valley wanted--but it may be just what they need. This charming novella is sure to become a new Christmas tradition for readers who love a great holiday story.

A Highland Christmas ($1.99 Kindle, B&N, Kobo), by M. C. Beaton, is the sixteenth in her Hamish Macbeth series. Two selections from the Agatha Raisin series are still priced at $2.99: The Quiche of Death (#1) and Kissing Christmas Goodbye (#18).

Book Description
Christmas is an ancient Roman festival, not to be celebrated by decent folk in the Scottish Highlands. Police Constable Hamish Macbeth has always loved the festivities, but this year his family is vacationing in sunny Florida. He is stuck with the long, lonely Christmas shift in freezing Lochdubh. A cranky old lady kicks off the holidays by reporting her cat missing. Then the Christmas lights and tree in a nearby village disappear soon after the local council voted to allow decorations. As Hamish finds a way to bring Christmas to the Highlands and make a little girl's dreams come true, he finds -- to his delight -- that he has the best Christmas ever.

A Merry Little Murder ($2.99 Kindle; $5.60 B&N), by Mary Welk, is the first in her A Rhodes to Murder Mystery series

Book Description

The nibbling and gnawing just went on from there. Now there are holes in the trunk where none should be and not a single branch will stay in place. Despite this disaster, the nurses of Psychiatric Ward One are determined to deck the blues by decking the halls. When an anonymous donor sends them an artificial balsam, they happily press their patients into decorating it. But lighting the new tree ends with a bang!

Who planted the bomb that wrecks havoc in the little town of Rhineburg? A frustrated employee fired by St. Anne's despised administrator? A student terrorist from Bruck University? Or Caroline Rhodes, a nurse with a suspicious past who survived the explosion but refuses to discuss it?

Tagged as a suspect by the FBI, Caroline must prove her innocence by unraveling a devilish plot devised to eliminate one man's nemesis. Aided by history professor Carl Atwater, Caroline cuts through a maze of conflicting stories, red herrings, and downright lies to bring a killer to justice.

Fate, of course, has other plans for Chucky, in the person of the beautiful Rosemarie, his off-again on-again nemesis from the time he saved her life when he was a young man.

The Paper Bag Christmas ($1.99 Kindle, B&N, Kobo), by Kevin Alan Milne

Book Description
Dr. Christopher Ringle is the last person you'd expect to find moonlighting as Santa Claus at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving. But it is there that he meets a young man named Molar Alan, who desperately needs a new perspective on the underlying value of Christmas. Dr. Ringle recruits Mo and his older brother as volunteers at a nearby children's hospital for the holiday season. At the hospital, Mo is tasked to help bring holiday cheer to the young cancer patients on the fifth floor. His biggest challenge is befriending a decidedly angry girl who is so embarrassed by her scarred appearance that she hides her face behind the safety of a paper bag. Almost in spite of himself, Mo finds that Christmas joy emanates from a source far greater than the North Pole, while the young girl learns that she is more beautiful than she had ever imagined.

Last up, a completely free download of Miss Humbug ($8.95 Paperback), directly from the author, Marnie L Pehrson.

Book Description

Not only is Christmas a complete waste of time and money in her opinion, but also it brings with it haunting memories that drive Elaina further into her frigid shell. Work is the only answer, but she's surrounded by coworkers who bask in the holiday glow, constantly reminding her of painful memories from Christmases gone by. Then one night, a week before Christmas, her past comes back to haunt her, and she's given an ultimatum. Either she learns the Spirit of Christmas or she won't live to see another December 25th. Will Elaina be able to understand and act on the truth before time runs out?

Two More Kindle Games: Jumble, 50 Puzzles and Jumble, 20 Puzzles

Two new games for Kindle today, although they are both the same, in essence, just with different puzzles and prices. I'll probably skip these, simply because (a) Jumble isn't my thing and (b) they seem a bit overpriced for the limited selection of puzzles (then again, had the 10 puzzle version been free, I might have grabbed it and changed my mind ... hint, hint). I'm apparently in the minority on this, though, as I see these two are already the 33 and #4 bestselling Kindle titles this morning (right behind EA Sudoku and Mahjong Solitaire, both of which I have and enjoy playing).

Update: Puzux replaced the 10 Jumble game with a 20 Jumble title. The ASIN is the same, but the cover and description now show that you get 20 puzzles for your 99 cents. If you have already purchased, be sure to upgrade. Also, the price on the 50 Jumble version has been dropped to $2.49, which is more in-line with it's limited size.
