Free Book (Kindle/nook) - The Addicted Brain

Update: 12/12/11 As expected, now free in the US Kindle store and from Barnes & Noble.

The Addicted Brain: Why We Abuse Drugs, Alcohol, and Nicotine (Main/UK), by Michael Kuhar, is free for UK customers in the Kindle store and should be free for US customers by morning.
Book Description
Addiction destroys lives. In The Addicted Brain, a leading neuroscientist explains how and why this happens–and presents advances in treatment and prevention. Using breathtaking brain imagery and other research, Michael Kuhar, Ph.D., shows the powerful, long-term brain changes that drugs can cause, revealing why it can be so difficult for addicts to escape their grip.

In plain English, Kuhar describes why some people are far more susceptible to addiction than others. He illuminates striking neural similarities between drugs and other pleasures potentially capable of causing abuse or addiction–including alcohol, gambling, sex, caffeine, and even Internet overuse. Finally, he outlines the 12 characteristics most often associated with successful treatment.

Authoritative and easy to understand, The Addicted Brain offers today’s most up-to-date scientific explanation of addiction–and what addicts, their families, and society can do about it.

Get an MP3 holiday album for $3.00 (KSO)

This offer is supposed to be for all models of Kindle with Special Offers, but so far it is only showing up on my Kindle Touch. The other offer that is showing on all my KSO's is the Free Audiobook of Beyond Religion that I told you about last week (and which everyone can get, even without a KSO).

Get any one of 100 holiday albums on MP3 for $3.00

To take advantage of this offer:
  1. First, turn on your Kindle with Special Offers, click Menu, then View Special Offers.
  2. Find the offer: Get any one of 100 holiday albums on MP3 for $3.00. Click on it, then on the link to Email Me This Offer.
  3. You will get an email from Amazon with your promotional code, right away.
  4. Once you have the promotion code (and have selected your album; see below), click this link, then on the button labeled Enter Your Code, at any time up to the expiration date of December 31.
  5. Enter your code and follow the directions.
  6. Choose any of these albums and you'll pay only $3.
You'll have a promotion code on your account that will apply to the FIRST album you buy (from the list) after that. Note that even if the album is free, you'll pay three dollars, so be careful which one you pick after you enter the code -- make sure you don't grabbing a low cost title by accident, which can happen if you apply the code right away, before you are ready to buy the album. Current prices range from $3.99 to $5.00. You should save the code and not enter it until you are ready to buy an album.

To recap: you must claim the offer by December 14 and must do so from your Kindle with Special Offers. You'll get a promotion code via email and you have until December 31 to enter and redeem the code. Once you enter it, it will work on the next album from the list that you purchase.

Unlike the Get an MP3 Classical Sampler for $2 offer that was only up for one day, you get a few days to sign up for this one. I'm hoping it will show up on more than just my Kindle Touch, so that others in the family can take advantage of the offer (they each have an account with their own KSO on it, since Amazon started limiting the offers to one per account). There is also a much larger selection available on this offer, with all but one of them currently at $5 and one at $3.99 (so I might pick up more than one without this offer code).

Additional formats on free books:

The Basement ($0.99), by Stephen Leather, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day. I have a review copy of this relatively short novel, and it looks like AmazonEncore has issued this edition, which should mean more of this UK author's backlist titles should be available in the US, eventually. His Kindle titles in the US have been mostly self-published, but if you check the UK store, you'll find that most were published by Hodder (in print) and many translated into several languages. In addition to his (currently) free short story Inspector Zhang Gets His Wish, I see a couple of other deals: Hard Landing: The First Spider Shepherd Thriller is £0.49 in the UK, while in the US, The Bestseller ($0.99) and Once Bitten ($2.99) are marked at bargain prices.
Book Description
New York is a city full of strangers. For NYPD detectives Turner and Marcinko, none are harder to figure out than the serial killer on the loose torturing and killing young women. In fact, right now, somewhere in the city, a woman is being held captive in a basement and it is up to the detectives to find her and the killer—before it’s too late.

As pressure mounts on Turner and Marcinko, their prime suspect is screenwriter wannabe Marvin Waller. He is becoming increasingly frustrated by his lack of success and the cops think he might be channeling his anger into murder—but he doesn’t seem to be at all concerned that they are hot on his trail. As Turner and Marcinko close in on Waller they have to wonder: is he the killer? And if he isn’t — who is?

Fusing shifting viewpoints with a growing sense of dread and almost unbearable suspense, the UK’s thriller master Stephen Leather arrives on the shores of the United States with The Basement, his most terrifying work to date.

The Dogs of Rome ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Conor Fitzgerald, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $6.92). This one was free back in May, so some of you should already have it!
Book Description
Rome. A city where rules are compromised. And compromise rules.

It's one of the hottest days of the year. Chief Inspector Blume is enjoying a rare solitary lunch in a tranquil corner of Trastevere when an unwelcome phone call intrudes with news of a brutal killing a few streets away.

Arturo Clemente is no ordinary victim. His widow is an elected member of the Senate, and Blume arrives at the scene to find enquiries well underway, the case itself apparently clear-cut, a prime suspect quickly identified. Blume must fight to regain control of the investigation, but well acquainted with the city's underworld, he knows from bitter experience that in Rome even a murder enquiry must bow to the rules of politics.

But when worrying shortcuts sanctioned by one of his superiors are uncovered, it seems events are being manipulated from on high. The complex and uncomfortable truth Blume will unravel will shock even him, and his struggle for justice may yet cost more innocent lives…

Free Book (Kindle/EPUB) - Money, Possessions, and Eternity

Update: 12/13/11 Now free from Sony. Still full price at B&N, so nook readers should grab the vanilla EPUB and side-load it.

Money, Possessions, and Eternity, by Randy Alcorn, is free on Kindle, courtesy of Christian publisher Tyndale House. So far, it's full price at Barnes & Noble, but it should drop there in a day or so (athough sometimes B&N chooses not to participate in these freebies).
Book Description
What does the Bible really say about money? This completely revised and updated version of the classic best-seller provides a Christian perspective about money and material possessions based on the author's painstaking study of the Bible. Randy Alcorn uses the Scriptures to approach this often touchy subject head-on. Thought-provoking arguments challenge readers to rethink their attitudes and use their God-given resources in ways that will have an eternal impact. Alcorn deals straightforwardly with issues of materialism, stewardship, prosperity theology, debt, and more. An excellent choice for group study as well as individual financial guidance. Includes a study guide, indexes, and appendixes with additional resources.
