Free Book (EPUB) - Twas The Night

Previously free on Kindle and in the iBookstore, Twas The Night ($7.99 Kindle) is now free at Borders bookstore. This is a "non-anthology", featuring Sandra Hill, Kate Holmes & Trish Jensen, that reads as if it were a single novel.

Book Description
“Christmas or Bust!”

What do a Blue Angels pilot, a bounty hunter and an ex-NFL football player have in common? The three bad-boy bachelors of Snowdon, Maine have to make a friend’s Christmas Eve wedding on time or die trying! They’re willing to risk anything to make that happen—even dashing through the snow in the goofiest bus on Earth, bright red and filled with a bunch of merry, meddling senior citizens known as the Santa Brigade. All too soon, these men will have met their matches in three special women: a woman from their past, a forest ranger so hot she ought to be declared a fire hazard, and a woman on the run. Ho, ho, OH!

While serving up holiday cheer with the Santa Brigade, the guys will discover ‘tis the season for good will and folly. Wise men or not, they are well and truly caught, which means these roguish St. Nicks are willing to jingle a few bells along the way if that’s what it takes to find what they truly want for Christmas nestled in their beds after the stockings are stuffed and the gifts placed under the tree.

Bargain Book Roundup - Holiday Reads and Music

I've uncovered a number of good buys on books for the holiday season, including one free from the author, and the link for 25 Days of Free Music from Amazon. I've tried to eliminate any repeats from recent posts, so if you are a new reader, be sure to check out Blog Tags on the right side menu, to find recent posts on Bargain books. Don't forget, for any non-Agency books you find at Kobobooks.com (EPUB only), be sure to use the coupon code dec3ww30 or dec3us30 for an additional 30% off.

First up, one for those boycotting Christmas: Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us ($1.99 Kindle, B&N, Kobo), by Allen Salkin

Book Description
Looking to add a little bitterness to your holiday season? Then FESTIVUS is the book you cannot do without!

Take Frosty out behind the woodshed and hide your menorahs, kinaras, diyas and whatevahs…the time has come for Festivus! The event celebrated by Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller) on Seinfeld, in which a bare aluminum pole replaces all holiday and religious symbols, where participants compete in "feats of strength" and undertake the "airing of grievances," has transcended television to become a worldwide phenomenon. In this side-splitting romp through the Festivus landscape, Allen Salkin meets Miss Festivus, tastes Festivus beer, and ponders the Festivus snail (along with Festy the cat), showing how anyone with a little creativity-and a dash of Costanza-can celebrate a Happy Festivus!

My Man Plautus: Learn how (and dear God, why?) the ancient Romans invented Festivus.

Mom, is that you? Peruse dozens of photos and illustrations of Festivus celebrants in their natural habitat.

Be sure to wash the nails: Learn to cook tasty Festivus recipes like Shrimp impaled on mini Festivus poles and Ham with Junior Mint and Snapple glaze.

There she is, Miss Festivus! Criteria for judging your own Miss Festivus contest (hint: the abilities to bowl a 170 and clean a carburetor count big).

Are those my chestnuts roasting? Lyrics and chords to that surefire smash "O Festivus!"and the chart-topping hit all the kids are singing: "Gather 'Round the Pole."

No fire hazards here: Tips on acquiring a gloriously inflammable aluminum pole.

A foreword by Father Festivus himself, Jerry Stiller! See why Festivus is more fun than being killed by a giant boulder.

One movie we watch ever year during the holidays is A Christmas Story. Now you can get "The Book That Inspired the Hilarious Classic Film" ($3.89 Kindle, Kobo; $3.99 B&N), by Jean Shepherd.

Book Description
A beloved, bestselling classic of humorous and nostalgic Americana—the book that inspired the equally classic Yuletide film.

The holiday film A Christmas Story, first released in 1983, has become a bona fide Christmas perennial, gaining in stature and fame with each succeeding year. Its affectionate, wacky, and wryly realistic portrayal of an American family’s typical Christmas joys and travails in small-town Depression-era Indiana has entered our imagination and our hearts with a force equal to It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street.

This edition of A Christmas Story gathers together in one hilarious volume the gems of autobiographical humor that Jean Shepherd drew upon to create this enduring film. Here is young Ralphie Parker’s shocking discovery that his decoder ring is really a device to promote Ovaltine; his mother and father’s pitched battle over the fate of a lascivious leg lamp; the unleashed and unnerving savagery of Ralphie’s duel in the show with the odious bullies Scut Farkas and Grover Dill; and, most crucially, Ralphie’s unstoppable campaign to get Santa—or anyone else—to give him a Red Ryder carbine action 200-shot range model air rifle. Who cares that the whole adult world is telling him, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid”?

The pieces that comprise A Christmas Story, previously published in the larger collections In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash and Wanda Hickey’s Night of Golden Memories, coalesce in a magical fashion to become an irresistible piece of Americana, quite the equal of the film in its ability to warm the heart and tickle the funny bone.

The Christmas Bus ($4.69 Kindle, Kobo; $4.79 B&N), by Melody Carlson, seems to go on sale every year about this time, but this is the first time I've noticed a drop on The Christmas Dog ($4.69 Kindle, Kobo; $4.79 B&N), which was nearly $10 just last month. For an even better deal, pick up one of her two anthologies, The Treasure of Christmas: A 3-in-1 Collection and The Joy of Christmas: A 3-in-1 Collection ($9.99 each).

Christmas Dog
Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations? Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet. But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

Christmas Bus
The people of Christmas Valley always celebrate Christmas to the fullest extent. The mayor plays Santa, every business is holiday themed, and there's a nativity for the kids each Christmas Eve. This town knows Christmas. But this year nothing goes according to plan. Shepherd's Inn is full of strangers, Mad Myrtle is causing problems, and a young couple with a baby due any minute rolls in to the middle of town in their Partridge Family-style bus. It's hardly the holiday Christmas Valley wanted--but it may be just what they need. This charming novella is sure to become a new Christmas tradition for readers who love a great holiday story.

A Highland Christmas ($1.99 Kindle, B&N, Kobo), by M. C. Beaton, is the sixteenth in her Hamish Macbeth series. Two selections from the Agatha Raisin series are still priced at $2.99: The Quiche of Death (#1) and Kissing Christmas Goodbye (#18).

Book Description
Christmas is an ancient Roman festival, not to be celebrated by decent folk in the Scottish Highlands. Police Constable Hamish Macbeth has always loved the festivities, but this year his family is vacationing in sunny Florida. He is stuck with the long, lonely Christmas shift in freezing Lochdubh. A cranky old lady kicks off the holidays by reporting her cat missing. Then the Christmas lights and tree in a nearby village disappear soon after the local council voted to allow decorations. As Hamish finds a way to bring Christmas to the Highlands and make a little girl's dreams come true, he finds -- to his delight -- that he has the best Christmas ever.

A Merry Little Murder ($2.99 Kindle; $5.60 B&N), by Mary Welk, is the first in her A Rhodes to Murder Mystery series

Book Description
It was nobody's fault, unless you counted the mice, and even they didn't mean to start trouble. A forgotten candy cane lured them to the Christmas tree stored in the basement of St. Anne's Hospital. The nibbling and gnawing just went on from there. Now there are holes in the trunk where none should be and not a single branch will stay in place. Despite this disaster, the nurses of Psychiatric Ward One are determined to deck the blues by decking the halls. When an anonymous donor sends them an artificial balsam, they happily press their patients into decorating it. But lighting the new tree ends with a bang!

Who planted the bomb that wrecks havoc in the little town of Rhineburg? A frustrated employee fired by St. Anne's despised administrator? A student terrorist from Bruck University? Or Caroline Rhodes, a nurse with a suspicious past who survived the explosion but refuses to discuss it?

Tagged as a suspect by the FBI, Caroline must prove her innocence by unraveling a devilish plot devised to eliminate one man's nemesis. Aided by history professor Carl Atwater, Caroline cuts through a maze of conflicting stories, red herrings, and downright lies to bring a killer to justice.

A Christmas Wedding ($2.99 Kindle, B&N, Kobo), by Andrew M. Greeley

A Christmas Wedding continues the saga of Chucky, the youngest son who wants to live the quiet life of an accountant and raise a nice Catholic family. Fate, of course, has other plans for Chucky, in the person of the beautiful Rosemarie, his off-again on-again nemesis from the time he saved her life when he was a young man.

Thrown out of Notre Dame on trumped up charges, Chucky ends up going to the University of Chicago. The only problem: his lifelong enemy Rosemarie is a fellow student. They decide to be "just friends," and while they battle with each other, "just friends" turns into something neither of them expected.

The Paper Bag Christmas ($1.99 Kindle, B&N, Kobo), by Kevin Alan Milne

Book Description
Dr. Christopher Ringle is the last person you'd expect to find moonlighting as Santa Claus at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving. But it is there that he meets a young man named Molar Alan, who desperately needs a new perspective on the underlying value of Christmas. Dr. Ringle recruits Mo and his older brother as volunteers at a nearby children's hospital for the holiday season. At the hospital, Mo is tasked to help bring holiday cheer to the young cancer patients on the fifth floor. His biggest challenge is befriending a decidedly angry girl who is so embarrassed by her scarred appearance that she hides her face behind the safety of a paper bag. Almost in spite of himself, Mo finds that Christmas joy emanates from a source far greater than the North Pole, while the young girl learns that she is more beautiful than she had ever imagined.

Last up, a completely free download of Miss Humbug ($8.95 Paperback), directly from the author, Marnie L Pehrson.

Book Description
It's Christmastime and cold, competitive Elaina Houston would rather work than celebrate. Not only is Christmas a complete waste of time and money in her opinion, but also it brings with it haunting memories that drive Elaina further into her frigid shell. Work is the only answer, but she's surrounded by coworkers who bask in the holiday glow, constantly reminding her of painful memories from Christmases gone by. Then one night, a week before Christmas, her past comes back to haunt her, and she's given an ultimatum. Either she learns the Spirit of Christmas or she won't live to see another December 25th. Will Elaina be able to understand and act on the truth before time runs out?

Pre-Order Collection and a TV Christmas Show

The Collected Novels of José Saramago is available as a pre-order on Kindle (with delivery tomorrow). You might not recognize the author's name right away, as this Portuguese author's books have not always been readily available in the US. His The Gospel According to Jesus Christ ($8.69), for example, provoked enough controversy that it was withdrawn from consideration for the 1992 European Literature Prize. But you likely have heard of the movie based on what is considered his masterpiece, the Nobel prize-winning Blindness ($7.65). It, the sequel Seeing ($9.99) and all the others are collected here, at a price well below what you'd pay picking up the titles individually; at $28.80, you are paying under under $2.50 per novel (with the novella thrown in free).

Book Description
This collection, available exclusively in e-book form, brings together the twelve novels (and one novella) of the great Portuguese writer José Saramago, with an introductory essay by Ursula Le Guin. From Saramago's early work, like the enchanting Baltasar & Blimunda and the controversial Gospel According to Jesus Christ, through his masterpiece Blindness and its sequel Seeing, to his later fables of politics, chance, history, and love, like All the Names and Death with Interruptions, this volume showcases the range and depth of Saramago’s career, his inimitable narrative voice, and his vast reserves of invention, humor, and understanding.

Call Me Mrs. Miracle ($7.29), by Debbie Macomber, may not be quite bargain priced, but you can watch the TV adaptation of it tonight, on the Hallmark Channel (8PM EST). If you prefer your entertainment in eInk, just click on the author's name -- there are 9 volumes under $4, several of them with Christmas themes.

Book Description
This Christmas, Emily Merkle (call her Mrs. Miracle!) is working in the toy department at Finley's, the last family-owned department store in New York City. And her boss is none other than…Jake Finley, the owner's son.

For Jake, holiday memories of brightly wrapped gifts, decorated trees and family were destroyed in a Christmas Eve tragedy years before. Now Christmas means just one thing to him—and to his father. Profit. Because they need a Christmas miracle to keep the business afloat.

Holly Larson needs a miracle, too. She wants to give her eight-year-old nephew, Gabe, the holiday he deserves. Holly's widowed brother is in the army and won't be home for Christmas, but at least she can get Gabe that toy robot from Finley's, the one gift he desperately wants. If she can figure out how to afford it…

Fortunately, it's Mrs. Miracle to the rescue. Next to making children happy, she likes nothing better than helping others—and that includes doing a bit of matchmaking!

This Christmas will be different. For all of them.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, hope you are having a good holiday. Once again, I'm including a few poems for the season today.

The Thanksgivings
by Harriet Maxwell Converse
Translated from a traditional Iroquois prayer
We who are here present thank the Great Spirit that we are here
          to praise Him.
We thank Him that He has created men and women, and ordered
that these beings shall always be living to multiply the earth.
We thank Him for making the earth and giving these beings its products
          to live on.
We thank Him for the water that comes out of the earth and runs
          for our lands.
We thank Him for all the animals on the earth.
We thank Him for certain timbers that grow and have fluids coming
          from them for us all.
We thank Him for the branches of the trees that grow shadows
          for our shelter.
We thank Him for the beings that come from the west, the thunder
and lightning that water the earth.
We thank Him for the light which we call our oldest brother, the sun
          that works for our good.
We thank Him for all the fruits that grow on the trees and vines.
We thank Him for his goodness in making the forests, and thank
          all its trees.
We thank Him for the darkness that gives us rest, and for the kind Being
of the darkness that gives us light, the moon.
We thank Him for the bright spots in the skies that give us signs,
          the stars.
We give Him thanks for our supporters, who had charge of our harvests.
We give thanks that the voice of the Great Spirit can still be heard
          through the words of Ga-ne-o-di-o.
We thank the Great Spirit that we have the privilege of this pleasant
          occasion.
We give thanks for the persons who can sing the Great Spirit's music,
and hope they will be privileged to continue in his faith.
We thank the Great Spirit for all the persons who perform the ceremonies
          on this occasion.

The Pumpkin
by John Greenleaf Whittier

Oh, greenly and fair in the lands of the sun,
The vines of the gourd and the rich melon run,
And the rock and the tree and the cottage enfold,
With broad leaves all greenness and blossoms all gold,
Like that which o'er Nineveh's prophet once grew,
While he waited to know that his warning was true,
And longed for the storm-cloud, and listened in vain
For the rush of the whirlwind and red fire-rain.

On the banks of the Xenil the dark Spanish maiden
Comes up with the fruit of the tangled vine laden;
And the Creole of Cuba laughs out to behold
Through orange-leaves shining the broad spheres of gold;
Yet with dearer delight from his home in the North,
On the fields of his harvest the Yankee looks forth,
Where crook-necks are coiling and yellow fruit shines,
And the sun of September melts down on his vines.

Ah! on Thanksgiving day, when from East and from West,
From North and from South comes the pilgrim and guest;
When the gray-haired New Englander sees round his board
The old broken links of affection restored,
When the care-wearied man seeks his mother once more,
And the worn matron smiles where the girl smiled before,
What moistens the lip and what brightens the eye?
What calls back the past, like the rich Pumpkin pie?

Oh, fruit loved of boyhood! the old days recalling,
When wood-grapes were purpling and brown nuts were falling!
When wild, ugly faces we carved in its skin,
Glaring out through the dark with a candle within!
When we laughed round the corn-heap, with hearts all in tune,
Our chair a broad pumpkin,—our lantern the moon,
Telling tales of the fairy who travelled like steam
In a pumpkin-shell coach, with two rats for her team!

Then thanks for thy present! none sweeter or better
E'er smoked from an oven or circled a platter!
Fairer hands never wrought at a pastry more fine,
Brighter eyes never watched o'er its baking, than thine!
And the prayer, which my mouth is too full to express,
Swells my heart that thy shadow may never be less,
That the days of thy lot may be lengthened below,
And the fame of thy worth like a pumpkin-vine grow,
And thy life be as sweet, and its last sunset sky
Golden-tinted and fair as thy own Pumpkin pie!

Free Book (PDF) - Martha Stewart Living Thanksgiving Recipes

Sirius XM's Martha Stewart Living Radio is once again offering a free PDF of Thanksgiving Hotline Recipes for free. All new recipes this year, with some yummy looking recipes from Martha, Emeril, Rick Bayless and more. There are some strange ones, as well (anyone up for Turkey roasted with coffee beans inside?). After a quick glance, I don't think there is any overlap from last year's book, so be sure to save it with the year in the name, so you don't think it is a duplicate.

Click HERE for the free book, the holiday program schedule at Sirius XM and some tips on a stress free Thanksgiving. If you missed last year's book, I tracked down a link for you to get it, as well.

Holiday Bargain Roundup - Books and Music

No new freebies today, but I just noticed that the limit on the number of 6" Kindles, whether the Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, 6 or the Kindle 3G Wireless Reading Device, Free 3G + Wi-Fi, 6, you can buy has been dropped from 5 down to 3. With this latest generation of Kindles, there has been a maximum purchase limit almost from the beginning and strong holiday demand must have already started or be highly anticipated. After all, they have sold out every holiday season so far. For that reason, I don't expect to see Amazon matching the rumored door-buster price that Best Buy will have on the WiFi only nooks on Black Friday: 10 units per store at $99.99 each. If you are planning on ordering for Christmas, I wouldn't wait too late; any Kindles ordered this month or next can be returned up to the end of January, 2011, rather than the standard 30 day return period.

For those of us that already have our Kindles, I've uncovered a few more holiday bargains, both holiday themed reading and some free and deeply discounted music.

12 Stocking Stuffer ($9.39) is a 12-story anthology from Harlequin Special Releases.

Get out the mistletoe! Twelve days of Christmas...twelve stories filled with the magic of holiday romance...perfect reading for a snowy winter's day. Bundle includes Faith, Hope and Love, The Christmas Bride, Christmas Passions, A Seasonal Secret, Return of the Light, Star Light, Star Bright, Naughty or Nice?, Christmas Fantasy, A Christmas Marriage Ultimatum, A Prince for Christmas, The Millionaire's Christmas Wish and Merry Christmas, Baby.

Bluegrass Christmas ($1.25), by Allie Pleiter

An Old-Fashioned Christmas

That's what led new believer Mary Thorpe to start over in quaint Middleburg, Kentucky. As director of the church's Christmas pageant, Mary's job is to bring the townspeople together, to remind them what the season is really about. But everyone is all riled up over one very handsome man: the man daring to run against Middleburg's popular long-standing mayor. Mac MacCarthy wants change. Mary wants things to stay as they are. Is there a happy medium? Both Mac and Mary are in for one very big Christmas surprise.

I'll Be Home for Christmas and One Golden Christmas ($2.27), by Lenora Worth, contains two full length novels (512 page total, in print).

Christmas bells and wedding bells chime in these classic tales by Lenora Worth

I'll Be Home For Christmas
Just weeks before Christmas, widowed mother Myla Howell and her two children are saved from the streets by a wealthy oil tycoon nicknamed "Scrooge." Has the chill surrounding Nick Rudolph's icy heart begun to thaw in time for the holidays?

One Golden Christmas
Take one small-town Christmas pageant. Add in three motherless children with a secret holiday wish and a handsome widowed father. Mix just so with pageant director Leandra Flanagan. Will yield big surprises by December 25th.

His Christmas Bride ($1.75), by Dana Corbit

The only gift Dylan Warren used to want was Jenna Scott's love. But his former childhood best friend broke his heart. Now, their matchmaking mothers insist the Warren and Scott clans celebrate the holiday together. Suddenly he and Jenna are paired on a mission to bring Christmas to a family who lost everything but each other. Jenna's kindness to the displaced little boys reminds Dylan why he loved her. Could joyful jingle bells soon be joined by the chime of wedding bells?

Atheists Guide to Christmas ($1.01), by Ariane Sherine, is a little different from your typical holiday themed read (and definitely not from a Christian publisher).

Last year, Guardian journalist Ariane Sherine launched the Atheist Bus Campaign and ended up raising over £150,000, enough to place the advert 'There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life' on 800 UK buses in January 2009. Now Ariane and dozens of other atheist writers, comedians and scientists are joining together to raise money for a very different cause.

The Atheist's Guide to Christmas is a funny, thoughtful handbook all about enjoying Christmas, from 42 of the world's most entertaining atheists. It features everything from an atheist Christmas miracle to a guide to the best Christmas pop hits, and contributors include Richard Dawkins, Charlie Brooker, Ben Goldacre, Jenny Colgan, David Baddiel, Simon Singh, AC Grayling, Brian Cox and Richard Herring.

The 99 Most Essential Christmas Masterpieces ($1.99), is another of the amazing samplers that Amazon has come out with. This one has nearly 6 hours of classical (not classic) Christmas music. Bargain Book Roundup - Holiday Reads

Hopefully you were reading this blog earlier last month and grabbed The Bite Before Christmas ($8.79) while it was briefly free for the Kindle. If not (or you've torn thru it, already), be sure to check out these bargain holiday reads before they go back up. Yes, I know it's too early for Christmas, but it's a retail reality and if you wait until the week before, many of these bargains will no doubt be gone (besides, you'll have more to do then and less time to check out the samples). A couple of these are even for other holidays this season (even Halloween), so you won't feel entirely rushed and will be well prepared for even New Year's Eve!

It's a bit past the season for A Catered Halloween ($4.47), by Isis Crawford, the fifth in her Mystery with Recipes series, but if you are reading these in holiday order (rather than publication), you'll need to read it quick before starting on A Catered Christmas ($9.99), which was just published this week, and A Catered Christmas ($5.59).

Book Description
With the promise of a hefty commission and some valuable word-of-mouth for their catering business, A Little Taste of Heaven, sisters Bernadette and Libby Simmons agree to cater the charity haunted house being staged at the old Peabody School. But when wealthy socialite Amethyst Applegate is found dead in the haunted house, Bernie and Libby wonder if a murderer might also be lurking about Peabody's gloomy halls. . .

While almost everyone Amethyst ever met might have a motive for killing her, not everyone had access to the Peabody School. All Bernie and Libby know is if they don't solve this mystery soon, they might become the next stars in a real-life horror flick. . .

Death in a Turkey Town ($3.99) is an indie published title from Melanie Jackson and is the third in her Chloe Boston Mystery series, which is followed by Murder on Parade ($3.99). With these two, you get both of the next holidays covered at a bargain rate.

Book Description
An overturned truck has left wild turkeys running loose in Hope Falls. Chloe Boston, unofficial detective and meter maid, is set the task of rounding them up. While Chloe is hunting turkeys she stumbles on a murder. The chief wants both turkeys and killer rounded up by Thanksgiving. Can Chloe do the seemingly impossible and also be maid of honor at her cousin's wedding when the groom is her main suspect?

The Plum Pudding Murder Bundle with Candy Cane Murder & Sugar Cookie Murder ($9.29), by Joanne Fluke (with novellas by Leslie Meier & Laura Levine) is a three-in-one bundle. even though I already have Candy Cane Murder, I'm considering this one just to get the other two, which are going for $11.98 combined. I do wish it contained Gingerbread Cookie Murder ($9.99), this year's novella anthology, instead, though.

And when Hannah's mother's antique Christmas cake knife disappears, its discovery in the décolletage of the new--and now late--Mrs. Dubinski puts the festivities on ice.

Jingle Hells ($3.99), by Misty Evans, is also indie-published. This one follows Witches Anonymous ($2.80) and appears to be relatively short (97K in size).

Book Description

The Treasure of Christmas: A 3-in-1 Collection and The Joy of Christmas: A 3-in-1 Collection ($9.99 each), by Melody Carlson, each collect 3 of her Christmas themed novels into single volume. I checked my library and the only overlap I found was The Christmas Bus ($6.29), which I picked up when it was free last year. Checking the prices of some of the other novels contained, just The Christmas Dog alone is selling for $9.68, three are not available as ebooks (two are also out of print, and the other two are over $6 each. So if this Christian author is one that you read, you should definitely grab these before the prices goes up.

The Christmas Bus
It's only two weeks before Christmas, and Edith Ryan is disappointed to learn that none of her children is coming home for the holidays. She decides to invite strangers to rent rooms usually reserved for family during the week of Christmas. When the guest list shapes up to include a cantankerous old woman and a young couple with a broken-down hippie bus and a baby on the way, Edith wonders if she made the right choice. Will this strange assortment of guests ruin Christmas? Or could she be entertaining angels unaware?

The Gift of Christmas Present
Christine Bradley couldn't have been more surprised when, shortly after her mother's death, her father revealed that Christine had been adopted at birth. As she grapples with the revelation, Christine determines to find what's left of her biological family. As Christmas nears and Christine draws closer to the truth about her heritage, she finds an unexpected gift in the family she never knew she had.

Angels in the Snow
Looking for solace after the deaths of her husband and young son, artist Claire Andrews flees to a cabin in the Cascade Mountains. As Claire walks through the woods each day, she discovers two mysterious sets of footprints in the snow, an adult's and a child's. Is she imagining them? And how is it that the tracks are gently leading her to paint--and to hope--once again?

An Irish Christmas A well-hidden secret has haunted Colleen for twenty years. Her husband made her promise she would never speak of it again, but now he's gone and life seems so out of control. Will her fragile relationship with her adult son Jamie survive the truth she's hidden for so long? Colleen decides it's time for the two of them to take a trip together--to Ireland. This will be a Christmas they will never forget.

All I Have to Give
Anna wants this to be the best Christmas ever, and she's willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish that. But what happens when everything and everyone around her seems to be falling apart? Fortunately for her, as often happens at this time of year, there are miracles in store. And what she unwraps for Christmas will surprise everyone.

The Christmas Dog
Betty Kowalski just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart this year. Maybe it's because her husband has passed away. Maybe it's because she's missing her children who no longer live nearby. Or maybe it has something to do with her obnoxious new neighbor, who seems to be tearing his house apart and rearranging it on the lawn. But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn what Christmas is really all about.

Jingle Bells, Shotgun Shells: A Christmas Murder Mystery ($2.99), by Annis Ward Jackson, is a short indie-published murder mystery. No reviews yet, but I did see a recommendation from a reader in the Amazon forums.

Book Description
A career Marine MP, seriously injured in a terrorist bombing, decides to try life as a police chief in a small town in eastern North Carolina.

While attempting to familiarize himself with the town's crime history he finds a red envelope containing reports on four murders from four separate years, all committed around Christmas.

Chief Ellis Crawford has only a few days to solve these murders and prevent the next, which he is convinced will be on Christmas Day.

No Christmas reading list is complete without at least one title from Debbie Macomber and this one is no exception. Angels at Christmas ($4.29) is one that wasn't included in my September Bargain Roundup, which included several of her titles (and most of those are still at bargain prices). Christmas Wishes: Christmas Letters\Rainy Day Kisses ($5.76) is a double novel title, both with a Christmas theme.

Angels at Christmas
Every Christmas, three lovable angels visit Earth. Once a year, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy are allowed to intervene (or, more accurately, interfere!) in human affairs. Despite their frequent misadventures and the chaos they often cause, things always seem to turn out right....

This Christmas, join Those Christmas Angels as they respond to Anne Fletcher's prayer request. She wants her son, Roy, to meet a special woman--and the angels contrive to throw Julie Wilcott in his path (literally!).

Watch as the heaven-sent messengers reunite a divorced couple, bring peace of mind to an elderly man and grant a little boy's fondest wish. Because there's always joy Where Angels Go.

Shirley, Goodness and Mercy offer you laughter and Christmas cheer in these two heartwarming stories!

Christmas Letters
Katherine O'Connor (known as K.O.) adores her five-year-old twin nieces and strongly objects to her sister's plans to dispense with Christmas. Zelda is following the theories of child psychologist Wynn Jeffries, author of The Free Child (and, as it happens, K.O.'s neighbor). K.O. is particularly horrified by his edict to "bury Santa under the sleigh," and she's out to prove that Wynn and his ideas are full of...snow. He's not going to ruin her nieces' Christmas! Too bad the guy's so darned attractive...

Rainy Day Kisses

Seventeen years ago Susannah Simmons was a career girl who knew nothing about babies. But after babysitting her infant niece, Michelle, Susannah learned that one determined and screaming baby can make the corporate world look like...child's play. Thank goodness for her charming neighbor Nate Townsend. Now he's her charming husband, and Susannah's a mother as well as an aunt. And every Christmas Eve, Michelle tells her cousins how their mom met their dad a story in which she plays a starring role.

Scrooge & Cratchit: A Sequel to 'A Christmas Carol' ($0.99), by Matt McHugh, is a short-story that takes place after several years after that oh-so-famous Christmas tale. So far, it has stellar reviews, but be aware that it's only about a 30 minute read.

Book Description
I first published "Scrooge & Cratchit" in 2002 as a small booklet circulated mostly among friends, with perhaps a few dozen copies sold beyond that. However, after I posted the story on my website, I was gratified to receive, from time to time, messages of interest from far-flung readers who happened to discover it online.

This left me intrigued by the growing reach of electronic books, but mainly impressed by the enduring interest in 'A Christmas Carol', going strong after a century-and-a-half...a work that remains unrivalled on many levels.

Like all great art, 'A Christmas Carol' connects to different generations because it addresses universal human concerns. Why do good men succumb to selfishness and greed? How does one person's life affect others? We all face questions like these, yet few have ever dramatized them with Dickens' grace and clarity.

The original says very little of the story's aftermath. I often wondered how that might play out. How does a reformed man deal with the burden of past guilt? How would those who knew Scrooge before and after his transformation relate to him?

If it seems presumptuous to attempt a follow-up to 'A Christmas Carol', consider the myriad film and stage adaptations, and I hope my story will be seen as part of an ongoing cultural conversation about a classic tale. Whatever merits my story may have, readers can judge for themselves. For my part, the experience of creating it has only deepened my appreciation for the source that inspired it.

Leaving Christmas behind, be sure to check out New Year's Eve Murder ($4.39), by Leslie Meier. I'm hoping that her Wicked Witch Murder ($9.99) goes down in price in time for next year's witching season.

Book Description
After the annual parade of Christmas presents in Tinker's Cove has ended, Lucy Stone and her daughter Elizabeth are ready to ring in the new year in style. Elizabeth has won mother/daughter winter makeovers in Manhattan from Jolie magazine! But the all-expenses-paid trip is bound to have some hidden costs--and one of them is murder. . .

After finally arriving at the offices of Jolie, meeting their fellow makeover candidates, and being treated to a fashion show, Elizabeth is enamored of the extreme outfits and stick-thin models--while Lucy's having some misgivings. The pampering is nice and the glitz and glamour of haute couture is bizarrely fascinating, but bitterness and aggression lurk behind Jolie's hipper-than-thou façade. And things turn downright ugly when self-absorbed fashion editor Nadine Nelson falls mysteriously ill and then dies. . .

Lucy saw first-hand some of the backstabbing going on at Jolie. And the red-hot rumor mill soon reveals that the cliquish connection among the magazine's cabal of high-style executives has stirred up plenty of bad blood over the years. But this Manhattan murder mystery hits too close to home when Elizabeth gets rushed to the hospital with symptoms that are disturbingly similar to Nadine's. Now, it's up to Lucy to dress down a killer before the ball drops in Times Square. . .

The Haircut, a New Year's Tale ($0.99), by Donna Callea, finishes up this book roundup.

Book Description
Two days after Christmas, 1948, in a city that could be New York, a young woman prepares to get a life-altering haircut. She's a princess, a post-war refugee, from an Eastern European principality that no longer exists. And she's being forced by her guardians-- her nefarious aunt and uncle-- to marry an obscenely rich industrialist who's got something of a hair fetish. The man, it seems, is aroused only by her amazingly long, glorious hair. So to save herself, she decides to get it all cut off. But she doesn't count on falling in love with the handsome young barber who refuses, at first, to do her bidding. Nor does the barber count on becoming entranced by the strangest customer he's ever encountered. Even after the severely shorn former princess is beaten beyond recognition for her act of rebellion, the barber, a widower still grieving for his late wife, finds her irresistible. Add to the mix Misha, an angel from the Old Country whose specialty is New Year's Eve. Ultimately, "The Haircut" is a story that weaves whimsy with romance, plus more serious themes, as it underscores the timelessness and hope of the season in which it's set.
