Kaplan Free Books Now Live at B&N & Sony

No sign of them yet on Kindle (and, in fact, the Kaplan main page now no longer shows Kindle as a choice; hopefully it will show up when Kaplan gets their books back on line there), but the deals pages for the 130 free books are now live at Barnes and Noble and Sony (although the prices are not at Sony), in addition to the iBooks store from Apple. There is also now a complete list of the books included, so you can browse thru them easily (and make sure you can find them, if on the iPad), HERE.

When following the links below, be sure to double check the price before ordering. There will no doubt be some books that haven't been updated or that make their way onto the category pages that don't have a $0.00 price. Only those that show $0.00 when you click to order them are free; you may have to wait on a few books for price drops over the next few days. The books should be free thru Jan 10, 2011.

Click HERE to get the books from B&N.

To get the books on your iPad, check this earlier post or click HERE if you are reading this on your iPad.

A Shelf-Full of Free Books from Kaplan

Just like last semester, Kaplan is giving away a shelf-load of free books this week. So far, they are only on iBooks and my source says there are 130 of them (so did the Kaplan promo page, until they took it down and password protected it so that no one can see it anymore). The promo page said these are supposed to show up in other stores as well, but I would not count on them all being in every store (last time, only iBooks had the full 100 free books).

I've been skimming thru the titles and I've already found more than 55 that were not on the sale last time, so even if you got in on that one, you'll want to check this one out. Books range from college prep, from getting into to getting thru grad school, law school, medical/nursing or an MBA, to memoirs (mostly medical fields), math for Moms and Dads to getting an interview. I suspect almost everyone can find at least one book they would enjoy on "the list." There is even Tribal Knowledge, a business book that focuses just on Starbucks Coffee, which should have a very wide appeal.

To find the free books: open iBooks, enter "Kaplan" (some are Kaplan Publishing, some are Kaplan, Inc, that I noticed, so the one word should find both) in the search box and browse thru the pages. Be careful: about the third page, I started running into books that were not free (of course, those first couple of pages were mostly books from the last sale, that I already had). By several pages in, the free books are just scattered here and there, but it pays to just keep scrolling thru to find the gems in the list. Remember -- you are not likely to get a refund from Apple if you accidentally buy a book at full price (and I saw books as high as $35.99 when browsing, with most of them around $10). The only confirmation you get that you'll be charged is that the green "get book" secondary prompt is instead "buy book" for one that isn't free.

I searched Barnes and Noble and Sony - both have a couple of hundred books from Kaplan, but none are free right now. Amazon has two! All the ones from the last sale are missing, so I'm wondering if they have all been pulled in anticipation of a price change. Last time, it was several days to a week before the free books started popping up in other places, so I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I spot them elsewhere. Meanwhile, those of you with iPads, enjoy!

Update: As is pointed out in the comments, Kaplan has (finally) set up a webpage for this promotion and it looks like Kindle books are on the way!

Monday's Kindle Deals of the Day

Amazon's Kindle Deals of the Day is still blank, but I found a number of Peterson's college prep titles for $2.99 and today's Student Deal of the Day is an updated "classic" (at least, in computer years).

Free Book (nook) - Mussolini's Rome

Mussolini's Rome: Rebuilding the Eternal City ($14.97 Kindle), by Borden Painter, is free in the Barnes and Noble store. Be sure to let Amazon know of the lower price (even if non-fiction architectural history isn't your thing, there is sure to be another reader out there who would love this one).

Book Description
An eye-opening look at the architectural mark fascism left on one of the world's most beloved cities R ome was Mussolini's obsession. After coming to power as a result of his famed march on the city in 1922, he promised Italians that his fascist revolution would unite them as never before and make Italy a major power on the world stage. In the next two decades, he set about rebuilding Rome as the foremost site and symbol of the new fascist order. Through an ambitious program of demolition and construction, he sought to make Rome a capital that both embraced modernity while preserving and glorifying the city's ancient past. Building the new Rome put people to work; 'liberated' ancient monuments from cluttered surroundings; cleared slums; produced giant complexes for education, sports, and cinema; produced wide new boulevards and piazzas; and provided the regime with a showcase in which to assert the power and identity of fascism. This intriguing book reveals Mussolini's tremendous and lasting impact on the city to which millions flock each year.

One Day Only - English Grammar For Dummies (Kindle)

This one is a bit higher priced than the usual bargain books I feature, but with all the back-to-school bargains that have been posted lately, I suspect there may be a few readers that either are taking classes themselves or have kids that are. Amazon has English Grammar For Dummies, by Geraldine Woods, marked half-price for today only. This still leaves it at $9.99 (most For Dummies titles seem to be either $13.19 or $9.99 in the Kindle store). B&N also has the same deal, while Kobo is at $11.59.

Book Description
A few years ago, a magazine sponsored a contest for the comment most likely to end a conversation. The winning entry? "I teach English grammar." Just throw that line out at a party; everyone around you will clam up or start saying "whom."

Why does grammar make everyone so nervous? Probably because English teachers, for decades - no, for centuries - have been making a big deal out of grammar in classrooms, diagramming sentences and drilling the parts of speech, clauses, and verbals into students until they beg for mercy. Happily, you don't have to learn all those technical terms of English grammar - and you certainly don't have to diagram sentences - in order to speak and write correct English.

So rest assured - English Grammar For Dummies will probably never make your English teacher's top-ten list of must-read books, because you won't have to diagram a single sentence. What you will discover are fun and easy strategies that can help you when you're faced with such grammatical dilemmas as the choice between "I" and "me," "had gone" and "went," and "who" and "whom." With English Grammar For Dummies, you won't have to memorize a long list of meaningless rules (well, maybe a couple in the punctuation chapter!), because when you understand the reason for a particular word choice, you'll pick the correct word automatically.

English Grammar For Dummies covers many other topics as well, such as the following:

  • Verbs, adjectives, and adverbs - oh my!
  • Preposition propositions and pronoun pronouncements
  • Punctuation: The lowdown on periods, commas, colons, and all those other squiggly marks
  • Possession: It's nine-tenths of grammatical law
  • Avoiding those double negative vibes
  • How to spice up really boring sentences (like this one)
  • Top Ten lists on improving your proofreading skills and ways to learn better grammar
Just think how improving your speaking and writing skills will help you in everyday situations, such as writing a paper for school, giving a presentation to your company's big wigs, or communicating effectively with your family. You will not only gain the confidence in knowing you're speaking or writing well, but you'll also make a good impression on those around you!

The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing - 99 cents (today only!)

Amazon has The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing, by Michael Harvey, marked down to 99 cents. They announced this on twitter as a one-day promotion, but didn't post it until nearly 8PM eastern; I'd expect the price to stick until at least 3AM here (and maybe most of tomorrow, but I would not count on it).

Book Description

100 Free Back-to-School iBooks from Kaplan

Apple seems to be determined to position the iPad as the device of choice. This week, they've teamed up with Kaplan Publishing to give away 100 books in a Back-to-School promotion, but one that anyone can participate in ... so long as you have an iPad (or an iBooks capable iPhone or iPod Touch; my older iPhone is not). There isn't a link to use in particular, as the ibookstore isn't accessible unless you are running the iBooks app, which, although free, only works on select Apple devices. From inside the iBookstore, wait until the scrolling banner on the top of the main page shows the ad for Learn Anytime, Anywhere/100 free titles, click it and you'll be taken to the correct page to access the deal (be careful, though, as at least one title was still showing a price as of 9:30AM EST). You have until August 30th (according to the press release) to purchase the books, but they should stay on your bookshelf after that (otherwise, we all need a book on speed-reading first).

The selection is pretty deep; 22 titles on law school prep, for example, including study guides for finals in several subjects. I tried it a bit early and was able to access the list with the original prices and most of the titles were listed for $4.99 or $9.99.  So far, I've purchased several of the titles, but they haven't actually downloaded to the point that I can read them (they act like the one pre-order title that is on my bookshelf).  If any of you take advantage of this offer, let me know if your books download right away or see to be stuck as a pre-order, as mine are.

Here's a copy of the press release (note that the titles may have changed since this was released):
Kaplan Kicks off Back-to-School for Everyone with Free book Downloads Offer
