Today's Deals

The Kindle Deal of the Day is stuck on The Princess Bride, so I'll have to check later to see if there is a new one today. In the meantime, the B&N Weekend Deal is Runner ($7.55 Kindle; $3.99 B&N), the sixth title in the Jane Whitefield Series by Thomas Perry. I've reported the lower price and usually if enough people do so, it will drop later in the day.
Book Description
Jane Whitefield—the fierce and resourceful heroine of Thomas Perry's most popular thrillers—returns from retirement to guide a fugitive out of danger.

For more than a decade, Jane Whitefield pursued her unusual profession: “I’m a guide . . . I show people how to go from places where somebody is trying to kill them to other places where nobody is.” Then she promised her husband she would never work again, and settled in to live a happy, quiet life as Jane McKinnon, the wife of a surgeon in Amherst, New York. But when a bomb goes off in the middle of a hospital fundraiser, Jane finds herself face to face with the cause of the explosion: a young pregnant girl who has been tracked across the country by a team of guns-for-hire. That night, regardless of what she wants or the vow she’s made to her husband, Jane must come back to transform one more victim into a runner. Her quest for safety sets in motion a mission that may be as much of a rescue operation as it is a chance for revenge. .

While Leo struggles to get Daniel to open up, hoping to unearth the reasons for the boy’s terrible crime, the build-up of pressure on Leo’s family intensifies. As the case nears its climax, events will take their darkest turn. For Leo, nothing will ever be the same again . . .

Today's Deals

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is Five Contemporary Romance Novels in The Sullivans series by Bella Andre for $1.99 each. The author warns that this series contains "explicit language, very steamy love scenes...and lots of emotion!"

The Look of Love
With THE LOOK OF LOVE bestselling author Bella Andre introduces you to a fun and emotional contemporary romance series about the Sullivan family. Because when a Sullivan bad boy falls...he falls hard. And it's forever.

Chloe Peterson is having a bad night. A really bad night. The large bruise on her cheek can attest to that. And when her car skids off the side of a wet country road straight into a ditch, she’s convinced even the gorgeous guy who rescues her in the middle of the rain storm must be too good to be true. Or is he?

As a successful photographer who frequently travels around the world, Chase Sullivan has his pick of beautiful women, and whenever he’s home in San Francisco, one of his seven siblings is usually up for causing a little fun trouble. Chase thinks his life is great just as it is—until the night he finds Chloe and her totaled car on the side of the road in Napa Valley. Not only has he never met anyone so lovely, both inside and out, but he quickly realizes she has much bigger problems than her damaged car. Soon, he is willing to move mountains to love—and protect—her, but will she let him?

Chloe vows never to make the mistake of trusting a man again. Only, with every loving look Chase gives her—and every sinfully sweet caress—as the attraction between them sparks and sizzles, she can’t help but wonder if she’s met the only exception. And although Chase didn’t realize his life was going to change forever in an instant, amazingly, he isn’t the least bit interested in fighting that change. Instead, he’s gearing up for a different fight altogether…for Chloe’s heart.
From This Moment On
For thirty-six years, Marcus Sullivan has been the responsible older brother, stepping in to take care of his seven siblings after their father died when they were children. But when the perfectly ordered future he's planned for himself turns out to be nothing but a lie, Marcus needs one reckless night to shake free from it all.

Nicola Harding is known throughout the world by only one name - Nico - for her catchy, sensual pop songs. Only, what no one knows about the twenty-five year old singer is that her sex-kitten image is totally false. After a terrible betrayal by a man who loved fame far more than he ever loved her, she vows not to let anyone else get close enough to find out who she really is...or hurt her again. Especially not the gorgeous stranger she meets at a nightclub, even though the hunger - and the sinful promises - in his dark eyes make her want to spill all her secrets.

One night is all Nicola and Marcus agree to share with each other. But nothing goes as they plan when instead of simply tangling limbs, they find a deeper connection than either of them could have anticipated. And even though they both try to fight it, growing emotions - and sizzling attraction - keep drawing them closer together.

Close enough for them to wonder if stealing one more secret moment together can ever be enough?
Can't Help Falling In Love
Gabe Sullivan risks his life every day as a firefighter in San Francisco. But after learning a brutal lesson about professional boundaries, he knows better than to risk his heart to his fire victims ever again. Especially the brave mother and daughter he saved from a deadly apartment fire...and can't stop thinking about.

Megan Harris knows she owes the heroic firefighter everything for running into a burning building to save her and her seven-year-old daughter. Everything except her heart. Because after losing her navy pilot husband five years ago, she has vowed to never suffer through loving - and losing - a man with a dangerous job again.

Only, when Gabe and Megan meet again and uncontrollable flames of desire ignite between them, how can he possibly ignore her courage, determination, and beauty? And how can she deny not only his strong bond with her daughter…but the way his sweetly sensual kisses are challenging her to risk everything she’s been guarding for so long?

This winter, if one - or both - of them aren’t careful, they just might end up falling in love.
I Only Have Eyes For You
Sophie Sullivan, a librarian in San Francisco, was five years old when she fell head over heels in love with Jake McCann. Twenty years later, she’s convinced the notorious bad boy still sees her as the “nice” Sullivan twin. That is, when he bothers to look at her at all. But when they both get caught up in the magic of the first Sullivan wedding, she knows it’s long past time to do whatever it takes to make him see her for who she truly is...the woman who will love him forever.

Jake has always been a magnet for women, especially since his Irish pubs made him extremely wealthy. But the only woman he really wants is the one he can never have. Not only is Sophie his best friend’s off-limits younger sister...he can’t risk letting her get close enough to discover his deeply hidden secret.

Only, when Sophie appears on his doorstep as Jake’s every fantasy come to life—smart, beautiful, and shockingly sexy—he doesn’t have a prayer of taking his eyes, or his hands, off her. And he can’t stop craving more of her sweet smiles and sinful kisses. Because even though Jake knows loving Sophie isn’t the right thing to do...how can he possibly resist?
If You Were Mine
Can two people who have both sworn off love find forever in each other's arms? Find out in IF YOU WERE MINE, the fifth book in Bella Andre's bestselling Sullivan family contemporary romance series.

The last thing Zach Sullivan wants is to take care of his brother's new puppy for two weeks. Until he meets the dog trainer, that is. Heather is bright, beautiful, and he can't stop thinking about her. Unfortunately, she just might be the only woman on earth who wants nothing to do with him.

Heather Linsey can't believe she's stuck working with one of the city's top dogs, auto-shop tycoon Zach Sullivan. Especially when his focus is clear from the start—not only to learn how to deal with his temporary puppy...but also to make her his. Having sworn off love at seventeen when she realized it was nothing more than a pack of lies, Heather has stuck to her vow never to fall for a charming man.

But as Heather's determination to push Zach away only fuels his determination to get closer—and the sensual and emotional connection between them grows more and more undeniable—will the biggest Sullivan bad boy of all tempt her into believing in love again?

The Universe Inside You ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by science journalist Brian Clegg, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $6.55).
Book Description
Fascinating facts and mind-boggling science of the human body. Built from the debris of exploding stars that floated through space for billions of years, home to a zoo of tiny aliens, and controlled by a brain with more possible connections than there are atoms in the universe, the human body is the most incredible thing in existence. In the sequel to his bestselling Inflight Science, Brian Clegg explores mitochondria, in-cell powerhouses which are thought to have once been separate creatures; how your eyes are quantum traps, consuming photons of light from the night sky that have traveled for millions of years; your many senses, which include the ability to detect warps in space and time, and why meeting an attractive person can turn you into a gibbering idiot.

The Princess Bride ($1.99 Kindle, B&N), by William Goldman, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle. I have an older edition in my library, in the topaz format, but this is newer and presumably updated (and is MOBI formatted, instead).
Book Description
William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests—for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love—that's thrilling and timeless.

Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible—inconceivable, even—to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.”

The Maze of Bones ($2.99 Kindle, B&N), the first title in The 39 Clues series by Rick Riordan, is the Nook Daily Find for Families, price matched on Kindle.
Book Description
The first book in this groundbreaking multimedia series sends readers around the world on the hunt for the 39 Clues. Gold Box Deal of the Day: Prepare for The Dark Knight Rises by getting "The Dark Knight" and other digital movies for $3.99 at Amazon Instant Video. Don't forget, also, that today is 2-for-1 Visa Signature Day at Fandango for those who are lucky enough to be seeing the movie in the theaters today. I'm going to have to put it off a few days, as I'm headed to LibertyCon.

If you do buy your movie tickets thru Fandango, you'll also get a $2 Amazon MP3 credit with each purchase (even the 2-for-1 deal above!). You might want to then check out Amazon's new 20-songs-for-25-cents deal. You can buy them mix-and-match or just grab the entire playlist for $5.

Amazon is making a big push into the "free" game arena, specifically with games you can play on your PC/notebook/netbook. If you've played the free games on your iPad or Kindle Fire, you know how these work: you get the game for free and can play for free, but you can then buy bonus packs (with real money) to advance faster or get special items in the game. As an example, with Fiesta Online Sparkcash you get a "free 30-day swift and Dark Pegasus Mount" and creating your Allods account thru Amazon gets you a free starter package with 600 Premium Crystal Chips and an Enchanted Saddle. Like iPad and Android games, you can also just play the free editions and never spend a dime (although play may be limited as some items may require purchase to attain), so it might be worth checking out a few of them.

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is King City ($1.99), a standalone novel by Lee Goldberg.
Book Description
Major Crimes Unit detective Tom Wade secretly worked with the Feds to nail seven of his fellow cops for corruption…turning him into a pariah in the police department. So he’s exiled to patrol a beat in King City’s deadliest neighborhood… with no back-up, no resources, and no hope of survival.

Now Wade fights to tame the lawless, poverty-stricken wasteland…while investigating a string of brutal murders of young women. It’s a case that takes him from the squalor of the inner-city to the manicured enclaves of the privileged, revealing the sordid and deadly ways the two worlds are intertwined…making his enemies even more determined to crush him.

But for Tom Wade, backing down is never an option...even if it will cost him his life. It’s one reason why bestselling author Janet Evanovich calls Wade “an unforgettable and deeply compelling character in the most original crime novel to come along in years."

The Boy Who Loved Batman ($10.34 Kindle, $3.99 B&N), by Michael Uslan, is the Nook Daily Find.
Book Description
A lavishly illustrated memoir about a boy who loved Batman and would grow up to turn his passion for the caped crusader into a vision of the Dark Knight, and ultimately one of the most successful pop culture franchises of all time. When he was eight, Michael Uslan fell in love with the comic book character known as Batman. He watched unhappily as the dark, serious superhero he knew and loved was turned into a campy goofball in the '60s TV show starring Adam West, and in 1979 he purchased the film rights to Batman with the goal of realizing his infinitely cooler vision of the caped crusader. After ten years of desperately pitching a film that no one wanted, he sold and then produced Tim Burton's critically acclaimed and phenomenally popular re-telling of Batman. Twenty years later, having produced every Batman film to date, Ulsan finally brought his full vision of Batman to the screen with THE DARK KNIGHT. The decades in between were fraught with heartache and hilarity, tears and turmoil, adventure and misadventure. Michael, a consummate story-teller, recounts his story here, in a memoir that will draw in comics and movie fans, pop culture enthusiasts, film students, and of course, all the boys and girls (of all ages) throughout the world who love Batman.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:
After "The Dark Knight" opened to historic response, my wife, Nancy sat me down and said, "Okay, NOW what do you want to be when you grow up?"

The Goose Girl ($1.99 Kindle, B&N), the first title in Shannon Hale's Books of Bayern series, is the Nook Daily Find for Families, price matched on Kindle.

The Dramatized edition of Antony & Cleopatra ($12.27 Audible), by William Shakespeare, with a full cast narration from BBC radio, is the second selection for this week. There are several Kindle editions, ranging from 99 cents and up, for those that prefer the original and free versions in MOBI and EPUB are relatively easy to find, as well.
Book Description
BBC Radio has a unique heritage when it comes to Shakespeare. Since 1923, when the newly formed company broadcast its first full-length play, generations of actors and producers have honed and perfected the craft of making Shakespeare to be heard.

Antony & Cleopatra is an intense love story, exploring the constant conflict between duty and emotion with characters so charismatic they continue to fascinate after 2,000 years. Shakespeare achieved some of his most beautiful poetry in this play, and the richness of the language makes it perfect for audio.

Revitalised, original, and comprehensive, this is Shakespeare for the new millennium.

Click HERE to get the free downloads (you'll need to enter your name and an email address. You'll end up clicking about three pages (for each book), before the audiobook actually downloads. Don't stop so long as you still see a button that talks about your Sync download (or until you see the Overdrive software open up; there is a link at Sync, if you don't already have Overdrive installed).

Once in Overdrive, you'll need to tell it where to save the files (just click OK to use the default location, since Overdrive will keep track of them for you), then again to actually start the download (by default, all parts of the book are downloaded; I would suggest not changing this in the last dialog box, just click on OK to get the download started). Make sure your audiobook is fully downloaded before the end of the week, as once the promo period is over, you won't be able to get them free.

You can't get any titles that have been missed, but once they are loaded into Overdrive (which you will need to install, if you are not already using it for library books), they are yours to keep (there is no expiration date). Two new titles each Thursday!

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is Resurrected ($1.99), the first (short) novel in Morgan Rice's Vampire Legacy series. The author is self-published, so I looked to see what else was available: she has a bad habit of putting up "parts" of her novels and charging for them (the entire novel is "154 pages", why would anyone pay for 'part 1', which is barley the length of a decent sample?). The synopsis of this one does claim that her Vampire Journals series is "bestselling" (although it doesn't say on which charts) and you can get the first novel in that series, Turned, for free (at least, as of right now). Those in the UK (only) can also pick up Arena One: Slaverunners (Book #1 of the Survival Trilogy) for $1.54 (£0.99), which actually looks to be the start of a good series and is a bit longer than these, at 390 pages (maybe she'll send me a review copy).
Book Description
In RESURRECTED (Book #1 of the Vampire Legacy), 16 year old Scarlet Paine finds herself changing in mysterious ways. She is becoming sensitive to light, able to read peoples’ thoughts, and is faster and stronger than she’s ever been. She doesn’t understand what’s happening to her, and tries to ignore it. But she can only dismiss it for so long.

Caitlin Paine, her mom, knows too well what’s happening to her daughter. She underwent the same transformation to vampire once, centuries ago. But now, in the present day, as a mere human, she has no memory of it. All she has is the journal she found in the attic—her mysterious vampire journal—telling of her exploits in another time and place, and of the vampire race being eradicated. But was there one exception to the rule? Could it be that Scarlet, her daughter, is the last remaining vampire on earth?

As Scarlet tries to fight who she’s becoming, she also tries to fight her intense feelings for Blake, a boy in her grade who she has a crush on. She can’t tell, though, if he’s into her, and with the big Halloween dance just days away, the pressure is on. She would do anything for Blake to ask her. But Vivian, the meanest of the popular girls, is also on Blake’s radar, and she’ll do anything to make Blake hers—and to make Scarlet’s life a living hell.

Luckily Scarlet has her own clique of friends to back her up, including her best friends Maria and Jasmin. They, too, have guy troubles—but it isn’t until Sage appears, the mysterious new boy, that her friends become obsessed. Scarlet finds herself attracted to him, too—and is surprised when it is her, of all the girls in the school, that he pays attention to. But her mind is set on Blake, at least for now, and she continues to hope he’ll ask her to the dance.

Just when it seems that Scarlet has what she wants, her body changes. Soon it may be impossible for her to be near her fellow humans. Soon, she may have to choose between her desire to live and her desire for love.

But even as a thriving adult, Kelly still saw herself as the daughter of garrulous Irish-American charmer George Corrigan. She was living deep within what she calls the Middle Place—“that sliver of time when parenthood and childhood overlap”—comfortably wedged between her adult duties and her parents’ care. But Kelly is abruptly shoved into coming-of-age when she finds a lump in her breast--and gets the diagnosis no one wants to hear. When George, too, learns that he has late-stage cancer, it is Kelly’s turn to take care of the man who had always taken care of her—and to show us a woman who finally takes the leap and grows up.

Kelly Corrigan is a natural-born storyteller, a gift you quickly recognize as her father’s legacy, and her stories are rich with everyday details. She captures the beat of an ordinary life and the tender, sometimes fractious moments that bind families together. Rueful and honest, Kelly is the prized friend who will tell you her darkest, lowest, screwiest thoughts, and then later dance on the coffee table at your party.

The World's Greatest Idea ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by John Farndon, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $8.39).
Book Description
An exploration of mankind’s greatest-ever ideas, from the author of the bestselling Do You Think You’re Clever?

Where would humanity be now without fire, vaccinations, farming … or wine? A great idea is one that has changed the path of human civilisation. But which is the greatest of them all? John Farndon, author of the bestselling Do You Think You’re Clever?, has set out to find the answer.

A distinguished panel of experts agreed on a list of 50 ideas, and each chapter of The World’s Greatest Idea sees Farndon explore the argument for a different one. The candidates are intriguingly varied: Electricity grids enable us to power our cities, but then sewers allowed those cities to grow. Without the wheel, modern civilisation would be pretty much impossible, but take away Logic and we’d lose the essential structures for rational thought ... But then what would be the point of all of this without the idea of romance?

The World’s Greatest Idea is an enthralling voyage of discovery through the most powerful intellectual, social, scientific and creative brainwaves humans have ever had.

Bargain Book Roundup

The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure ($8.10 Kindle), by William Goldman, is $1.99 at Kobo tonight (and coupon eligible). So, if you see this before the price goes up, you can get a great deal on this classic.

Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.”

Don't Look Back ($2.99), by Karin Fossum and Felicity David (Translator)
Book Description
Don't Look Back heralds the arrival of an exotic new crime series featuring Inspector Sejer, a smart and enigmatic hero, tough but fair. The setting is a small, idyllic village at the foot of Norway's Kollen Mountain, where neighbors know neighbors and children play happily in the streets. But when the body of a teenage girl is found by the lake at the mountaintop, the town's tranquillity is shattered forever. Annie was strong, intelligent, and loved by everyone. What went so terribly wrong? Doggedly, yet subtly, Inspector Sejer uncovers layer upon layer of distrust and lies beneath the town's seemingly perfect facade.

Critically acclaimed across Europe, Karin Fossum's Inspector Sejer novels are masterfully constructed, psychologically convincing, and compulsively readable, and are now available in the United States for the first time.

The Wild Marsh: Four Seasons at Home in Montana ($2.99 Kindle), by Rick Bass
Book Description
The Wild Marsh is Rick Bass’s most mature, full account of life in the Yaak and a crowning achievement in his celebrated career. It begins with his family settling in for the long Montana winter, and captures all the subtle harbingers of change that mark each passing month — the initial cruel teasing of spring, the splendor and fecundity of summer, and the bittersweet memories evoked by fall.

It is full of rich observation about what it takes to live in the valley — ruggedness, improvisation and, of course, duct tape. The Wild Marsh is also tremendously poignant, especially when Bass reflects on what it means for his young daughters to grow up surrounded by the strangeness and wonder of nature. He shares with them the Yaak’s little secrets — where the huckleberries are best in a dry year, where to find a grizzly’s claw marks in an old cedar — and discovers that passing on this intimate local knowledge, the knowledge of home, is a kind of rare and valuable love.

Bass emerges not just as a writer but as a father, a neighbor, and a gifted observer, uniquely able to bring us close to the drama and sanctity of small things, ensuring that though the wilderness is increasingly at risk, the voice of the wilderness will not disappear.

This last one is cheating a bit, as it isn't a book, but I just noticed at Amazon that you can get $8 off the Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition of Brave, which includes the 3D and BluRay versions. There is a "coupon" you must clip, just below the cover image (just click the button there) and then use the full check out procedure (not one-click). You'll see the $8 discount on the final page before confirming the order. I was wanting to see this at the theater, but had to choose amongst the many new releases this month - with the discount, it's less than we'd pay to see it and we can watch the 3D version as many times as we want, at home. In any case, it goes with the free copy of Brave that B&N is giving away today. It is a pre-order, so if the price goes down any between now and when it is released, you'll still get the lowest price minus the $8 discount (I don't expect it on this title, but I've actually had a few orders here and there where Amazon ended up actually paying me due to a coupon code and price match they did).
Movie Description
Set in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, Disney Pixar's Brave follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), unleashing chaos in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources including her mischievous triplet brothers to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery.

Soon after, Cathy thinks she catches a glimpse of the former best friend who testified against her in the trial; she begins to return home to find objects subtly rearranged in her apartment, one of Lee’s old tricks. It looks like Amazon is giving away a $1 MP3 credit with the purchase of any CD (limit one per customer). That's a pretty good albums on albums such as John Mayer's Born and Raised, which is cheaper than the MP3 version, or you can pre-order The Dark Knight Rises: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ($10, ships tomorrow and has three tracks not on the MP3 version). You'll have to wait a bit to get the credit (it's added to your account automatically after the CD ships), but you might want to go ahead and get today's MP3 Album deal anyway, since it's Doo-Wops & Hooligans by Bruno Mars for only 99 cents! Then, when you get the credit, you can use it on something like Queen's Greatest Hits ($2.99).

Just Run It! ($10.39 Kindle, $2.99 B&N), by Dick Cross, is the Nook Daily Find.
Book Description
The growth engine of the global economy is no longer through mega-production and huge conglomerates, but rather through the proliferation of smaller enterprises. These smaller businesses often struggle. In America alone, tens of thousands of businesses crop up each year. Unfortunately, few will succeed, though not due to a lack of ingenuity, initiative, or even capital. Why, then? Because so few of the would-be drivers of the new economy know how to convert their dreams, their ideas, their courage, and their initiatives into successful enterprises. According to Dick Cross, author of Just Run It!: Running an Exceptional Business Is Easier Than You Think, most business owners lack not just the fundamentals, the nuts and bolts of operating a business effectively day in and day out, but the bigger picture of how to achieve business success. This shortcoming is pervasive: it handicaps most new businesses from the start and it prevents the lion's share of existing ones from ever becoming significant.

After taking dozens of mainstream companies from underperforming to high performance, Cross observed a pattern, out of which he devised a formula for success. Using his Just Run It! framework, he is now teaching small and medium-sized enterprises how to understand their mainstream businesses on "the back of an envelope" and to achieve the next level of success. The book showcases a Vision-Strategy-Execution exercise to help business owners crystallize their primary business advantage and then focus efforts to maximize performance around it. Financial reporting, management and leadership, teamwork, communicationsall skills needed to run a "one business" business are covered in detail. In closing, Cross makes the case that for "those who can't adjust their thinking to new realities, the decline in America's global standing as an industrial power is a death knell. For those who can, it's the reveille of opportunity."
