Kindle Daily Deals 5/9

Amazon's Android Free App of the Day is Jumbline 2, a highly rated puzzle game from Brainium.

Premiering this week in an Amazon Exclusive debut is Jawfish Words (Kindle Fire only), which promises to be a faster, real-time word game with friends (and strangers). It's free to purchase and play (but, of course, there are in-app purchases that can be made, which I usually set to require a password, so I don't accidentally spend).

Today's Kindle Daily Deal is Captive in Iran: A Remarkable True Story of Hope and Triumph amid the Horror of Tehran's Brutal Evin Prison ($1.99), by Maryam Rostampour, Marziyeh Amirizadeh, Anne Graham Lotz and John Perry [Tyndale Momentum], with the companion audiobook for $4.49.
Book Description
Embark on a chilling journey inside one of the world’s darkest and most dangerous places: Evin, the notorious Tehran prison. Here, prisoners are routinely tortured, abused, and violated. Executions are frequent and sudden. But for two women imprisoned for their Christian faith—Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh—this hell on earth was a place of unlikely grace as they reflected God’s love and compassion to their fellow prisoners and guards. Against all odds, Evin would become the only church many of them had ever known.

In Captive in Iran, Maryam and Marziyeh recount their 259 days in Evin. It’s an amazing story of unyielding faith—when denying God would have meant freedom. Of incredible support from strangers around the world who fought for the women’s release. And of bringing God’s light into one of the world’s darkest places—giving hope to those who had lost everything, and showing love to those in despair.

Today's Kindle Romance Daily Deal is Now You See Her ($0.99), by Linda Howard [Simon and Schuster].
Book Description
With the scintillating sensuality and high-voltage thrills that distinguish all of her blockbusters of romantic suspense, Linda Howard grips the imagination and touches the heart as only she can, in her sixth dazzling New York Times bestseller.

A talented painter in her early thirties, Paris Sweeney has achieved enviable success: her work sells at an exclusive New York City gallery, and her popularity is at an all-time high. Life is good, and Sweeney, as she prefers to be called, is content.

But lately, Sweeney's dreams -- lush, vivid, and drenched in vibrant hues -- seem to echo a growing restlessness that has taken hold of her. Suddenly, impulsively, Sweeney falls into a night of intense passion with millionaire Richard Worth. Now, the true dangers of her all-consuming urges are about to be revealed where Sweeney least expects it: in her paintings.

After a creative frenzy she can barely recall, Sweeney discovers she has rendered a disturbing image -- a graphic murder scene. Against her better instincts, she returns to the canvas time and again, filling out each chilling detail piece by piece. But when a shattering, real-life murder mirrors her creation, Sweeney falls under suspicion. With every stroke of her brush, she risks incriminating herself with her inexplicable knowledge of a deadly crime. And every desire -- including her hunger for Richard -- is loaded with uncertainty as Sweeney races to unmask a killer.

UK Kindle Daily Deal 5/9

Frankenstein's Cat: Cuddling Up to Biotech's Brave New Beasts (£1.19 UK), by Emily Anthes [Oneworld], is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $11.04). This was one of Barnes and Noble’s Best Books of March 2013, Amazon’s Best Nonfiction Books for March 2013 and Publishers Weekly’s Top Ten Spring 2013 Science Books.
Book Description
Fluorescent fish that glow near pollution. Dolphins with prosthetic fins. Robot-armoured beetles that military handlers can send on spy missions. Beloved pets resurrected from DNA. Scientists have already begun to create these high-tech hybrids, mostly to serve human whims and needs. What if a cow could be engineered to no longer feel pain – should we design a herd that would assuage our guilt over eating meat? Shouldn’t we create it?

Popular science writer Emily Anthes travels around the globe to see how humans are inventing the fauna of the future, from the Roslin Institute, the Scottish birthplace of Dolly the Sheep, where scientists are trying to clone an endangered mountain lion to a ‘pharm’ where chickens are modified to lay eggs laced with cancer-fighting drugs. Frankenstein’s Cat is an eye-opening exploration of weird science – and how we are playing god in the animal world.

Nook Daily Find 5/9

Personal Health: What You Need to Know from Modern Science ($96.99 $53.34 Kindle, $2.99 B&N), a collection of titles by Anne Maczulak, David S. Perlin, Karl S. Drlica and Michael Kuhar, is the Nook Daily Find. Long time readers will find a copy already in their libraries, as this was free last May. For those that missed it then, this is a pretty decent price for the set.
Book Description
3 remarkable books reveal the latest scientific discoveries about addiction, antibiotic-resistant disease, bacteria — and you

These three remarkable books take you to the cutting edge of health science, revealing today’s most powerful scientific discoveries about addiction, antibiotic-resistant disease, and bacteria. In The Addicted Brain, leading neuroscientist Michael Kuhar, Ph.D. explains how and why addiction destroys lives, and presents the latest advances in treatment and prevention. Using breathtaking brain imagery and other research, Kuhar reveals the powerful, long-term brain changes that drugs can cause, explaining why it can be so difficult for addicts to escape them. He describes why some people are unusually susceptible to addiction; illuminates striking neural similarities between drugs and pleasures ranging from alcohol and gambling to sex and caffeine; and outlines the 12 characteristics most often associated with successful treatment. Next, in Antibiotic Resistance: Understanding and Responding to an Emerging Crisis, Karl S. Drlica and David S. Perlin presents a thorough and authoritative overview of the growing resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics, and what this means to our ability to control and treat infectious diseases. The authors answer crucial questions such as: What is resistance? How does it emerge? How do common human activities contribute to resistance? What can we do about it? Are there better ways to discover new antibiotics? How can we strengthen our defenses against resistance, minimize public health risks and extend the effectiveness of the antibiotics we have? Finally, in Allies and Enemies, Anne Maczulak tells the story of the amazing, intimate partnership between humans and bacteria. Offering a powerful new perspective on Earth’s oldest creatures, Maczulak explains how bacteria work, how they evolve, their surprising contributions and uses, the roles they’ve played in human history – and why you can't survive without them.

From pioneering scientists and researchers including Michael Kuhar, Karl S. Drlica, David S. Perlin, and Anne Maczulak

Diesel Daily Deal - The Knave and the Maiden (E)

The Knave and the Maiden ($5.99 $4.61 Kindle), by Blythe Gifford [Harlequin Historical], is today's Deal of the "Day" at Diesel E-Books, where it's discounted to $1.20 (8 copies left).

Book Description
COULD A MAIDEN'S KISS TURN A CYNICAL ROGUE INTO AN HONORABLE KNIGHT?

Mercenary knight Sir Garren owed much to William, Earl of Readington: his sword, his horse, even his very knighthood. And in return Garren had saved the earl's life in the Holy Land. Yet when his liege lord fell gravely ill upon their return home, Garren knew he must save his friend once more, whatever the cost—even if it meant embarking upon a pilgrimage to pray to a long-forsaken God, or promising to deflower an innocent young woman along the way….

Dominica was certain Sir Garren was a sign from heaven. Surely the pilgrimage, blessed with the presence of the handsome and heroic knight, would provide a sign of heaven's plan for her to take the veil. But every step of the journey seemed to be leading her straight into Garren's powerful arms. And Dominica was beginning to wonder if her true mission was to open the mercenary's seemingly cold heart to true and lasting love.

Today's Kindle Daily Deal is The Ghost Writer ($1.99), by John Harwood [Houghton Mifflin Harcourt].
Book Description
In this tantalizing tale of Victorian ghost stories and family secrets, timid, solitary librarian Gerard Freeman lives for just two things: his elusive pen pal Alice and a story he found hidden in his mother's drawer years ago. Written by his great-grandmother Viola, it hints at his mother's role in a sinister crime. As he discovers more of Viola's chilling tales, he realizes that they might hold the key to finding Alice and unveiling his family's mystery-or will they bring him the untimely death they seem to foretell?

Harwood's astonishing, assured debut shows us just how dangerous family skeletons-and stories-can be.

Today's Kindle Romance Daily Deal is Royal Pain ($1.99), by Megan Mulry, which is also today's Nook Daily Find.
Book Description

Smart, ambitious, and career driven, Bronte Talbot started following British royalty in the gossip mags only to annoy her intellectual father. But her fascination has turned into a not-so-secret guilty pleasure. In spite of her frivolous passion for all things royal, Bronte isn't at all sure she wants the reality. Is becoming royalty every American woman's secret dream, or is it a nightmare of disapproving dowagers, paparazzi, stiff-upper-lip tea parties, and over-the-top hats?

Today's Kindle SciFi/Fantasy Daily Deal is Emperor Mollusk versus The Sinister Brain ($1.99), by A. Lee Martinez [Orbit], with the companion audiobook for $3.99.
Book Description
Emperor Mollusk.

Intergalactic Menace. Destroyer of Worlds. Conqueror of Other Worlds. Mad Genius. Ex-Warlord of Earth.

Not bad for a guy without a spine.

But what's a villain to do after he's done . . . everything. With no new ambitions, he's happy to pitch in and solve the energy crisis or repel alien invaders should the need arise, but if he had his way, he'd prefer to be left alone to explore the boundaries of dangerous science. Just as a hobby, of course.

Retirement isn't easy though. If the boredom doesn't get him, there's always the Venusians. Or the Saturnites. Or the Mercurials. Or . . . well, you get the idea. If that wasn't bad enough, there's also the assassins of a legendary death cult and an up-and-coming megalomaniac (as brilliant as he is bodiless) who have marked Emperor for their own nefarious purposes. But Mollusk isn't about to let the Earth slip out of his own tentacles and into the less capable clutches of another. So it's time to dust off the old death ray and come out of retirement. Except this time, he's not out to rule the world. He's out to save it from the peril of THE SINISTER BRAIN!
