Free Book (nook) - Billy Boyle

Billy Boyle ($7.51 Kindle), by James R. Benn, the first in the Billy Boyle World War II Mystery series, is free from Barnes and Noble tonight.

Book Description
What’s a twenty-two-year-old Irish American cop who’s never been out of Massachusetts before doing at Beardsley Hall, an English country house, having lunch with King Haakon of Norway? Billy Boyle himself wonders. Back home in Southie, he’d barely made detective when war was declared. Unwilling to fight—and perhaps die—for England, he was relieved when his mother wangled a job for him on the staff of a general married to her distant cousin. But the general turns out to be Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose headquarters are in London, which is undergoing the Blitz. And Uncle Ike wants Billy to be his personal investigator.

Billy is dispatched to the seat of the Norwegian government in exile. Operation Jupiter, the impending invasion of Norway, is being planned, but it is feared that there is a German spy amongst the Norwegians.

Billy doubts his own abilities, with good reason. A theft and two murders test his investigative powers, but Billy proves to be a better detective than he or anyone else expected.

And now, a word from a sponsor - Diapers and Parents Magazine

,
OK, not really a sponsor. But this deal has nothing whatsoever to do with books, games, videos or music, so is pretty much just an ad (but a great deal for some of you out there). If you don't have or take care of any kids, just click to read the next post. If you do and have to buy diapers, you will want to take advantage of this deal at Amazon. You can get more than 90% off of select diapers and baby wipes, by combining a subscription and multiple coupon codes onto one order.

First, click HERE or on the picture above. Order any of the items on the deals page using the Subscribe and Save option and you'll get 30% off the already discounted price shown. Don't worry, you can cancel your subscription at any time after you receive confirmation that your order has shipped, so you are not really locking yourself in to getting them from Amazon all the time. You'll also automatically get free 2-day shipping on these orders, so you don't need to pay any extra for that, either.

Don't submit the order yet, though. First, search the August and September issue of Parents Magazine (print, not Kindle). In it you will find a little Orange Card for Amazon with an offer for 20% off. You can combine this with the deal above for a total savings of 50% OFF!! (30% with the subscribe and save discount and 20% with the Amazon coupon from Parents Magazine). You enter the coupon code off of the orange card after clicking on Subscribe and Save, but before confirming the order - there is a place for entering coupon codes there, just as with regular orders.

Each card is a one-use code, like gift certificates, but they can be combined on one order, so long as the starting letter is different. There are cards that start with an A, W or X, so you could potentially add all three on one order to get an additional 60% off. That's a total of 90% off so far, but there's more....

If you use Pampers Diapers, Pants, Easy Ups Trainers or UnderJams, you can get an additional $1.50 off by first going to your Amazon Coupons Page and clicking on an applicable coupon. You do, however, need to make sure that the item you pick on the Coupons page is one of the ones on the 30% off deals page, though. I don't know about you, but I forget to check the coupons that Amazon has set up for me. These seem to change about every time I refresh the page, but I was presented with the $1.50 Pampers coupon the first time, after clicking on the links above.

So, for maximum savings of 90% plus $1.50 off the Amazon (not list) price, follow these steps
  1. Locate the coupons in the August and September issues of Parents Magazine. There are Facebook and other groups that trade codes, if you need to do so.
  2. If you are a Pampers customer, click on the Amazon Coupons Page and refresh until you see a coupon for the type of Pampers product that you use (I see an expiration date of 8/28/10 on these, so this isn't a one-day only deal).
  3. Finally, click on the Diapers Promotion page to make sure you are getting one of the items included on the promotion.
  4. Click on Subscribe and Save (on the right side of the screen, below the usual Add to Cart and 1-Click options).
  5. On the order confirmation page, enter your codes, up to three per order, so long as they start with different letters (you enter a code, click on Apply, then repeat for each code).
  6. Then, check your order total and submit!
You should see a shipping notice within a day or two, for most products. Once the item has shipped, you can go to the Manage Subscribe & Save Items page under Your Account and cancel any future shipments. And, here's a secret - generally you can cancel a subscription and then start a new one, even on the same day, in order take advantage of deals like this that are usually for new subscriptions only.

The coupons in Parents magazine are rumored to be coming in future issues as well. If you want to subscribe, there are two decent deals: for today only, Barnes and Noble has a one-year subscription for $5. If you miss that one, want more than one year or just prefer to keep all your subscriptions at Amazon, where they are pretty easy to manage, then Amazon has a two-year subscription for $12.

Yes, those diabolical pricers at Amazon may have figured out how to get us to buy another book in the series with every freebie: give us the second one free and price the first one low enough to be an impulse buy!

Heartsick ($2.99), by Chelsea Cain

Book Description
Damaged Portland detective Archie Sheridan spent ten years tracking Gretchen Lowell, a beautiful serial killer, but in the end she was the one who caught him. Two years ago, Gretchen kidnapped Archie and tortured him for ten days, but instead of killing him, she mysteriously decided to let him go. She turned herself in, and now Gretchen has been locked away for the rest of her life, while Archie is in a prison of another kind---addicted to pain pills, unable to return to his old life, powerless to get those ten horrific days off his mind. Archie's a different person, his estranged wife says, and he knows she's right. He continues to visit Gretchen in prison once a week, saying that only he can get her to confess as to the whereabouts of more of her victims, but even he knows the truth---he can't stay away.

When another killer begins snatching teenage girls off the streets of Portland, Archie has to pull himself together enough to lead the new task force investigating the murders. A hungry young newspaper reporter, Susan Ward, begins profiling Archie and the investigation, which sparks a deadly game between Archie, Susan, the new killer, and even Gretchen. They need to catch a killer, and maybe somehow then Archie can free himself from Gretchen, once and for all. Either way, Heartsick makes for one of the most extraordinary suspense debuts in recent memory.

Under the Jolly Roger:Being an Account of the Further Nautical Adventures of Jacky Faber ($2.85), by Louis A. Meyer, is the third in his Bloody Jack Adventures series for teens/young adults. This has been a popular series for bargains and freebies this summer: so far, I've got Bloody Jack: Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary "Jacky" Faber, Ship's Boy ($6.36), the first in the series, as a free audiobook from Sync, and Rapture of the Deep: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, Soldier, Sailor, Mermaid, Spy ($9.99), the seventh in the series, free from Sony last month. The second in the series is Curse of the Blue Tattoo ($7.95), which I may have to consider (I'll wait for more bargains after the first three, as my TBR stack is already high enough). When searching for the series, some have L.A. Meyer as the author and I've also noticed that many of the titles have two editions: an earlier one in topaz format and a newer one in mobi.

Book Description
After leaving the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston--under dire circumstances, of course--Jacky Faber boards a whaling ship bound for London, where she hopes to find her beloved Jaimy. But things don't go as planned, and soon Jacky is off on a wild misadventure at sea. She thwarts the lecherous advances of a crazy captain, rallies sailors to her side, and ultimately gains command of a ship in His Majesty's Royal Navy. But Jacky's adventures don't end there. . . .

Includes a teaser to Jacky's next adventure, In the Belly of the Bloodhound.

Bargain Book Roundup - Canadian Edition

For my Canadian readers, here is an eclectic collection of bargain books in the Kindle store. A few have been free or low priced for US readers in the past, but now are under a dollar for Canadians (many previously had the $2 international fee tacked on). I've included a few religious non-fiction titles at the end (in case the earlier post didn't have any that were bargains in Canada) and finish with what is possibly the book that has the worst reviews I have ever seen; you can pick up this "gem" for 50 cents (if you dare), rather than the $5 or so that all the reviewers claim to have paid.

A note for US readers: -Most of the books in this post will have considerably higher prices than Canadian readers will see (I've indicated next to each title if the sale price is valid in the US). Amazon uses the country location set on the Manage My Kindle page to determine which price you will see (and even whether or not you can purchase a book). Always double check the prices before one-clicking and I recommend also always checking either the Order Summary (linked in when you order via the web), your confirmation email or the Manage My Kindle page to verify the price you have paid (prices can change between the time you display a page and when you click, especially on very popular books that seem to often be marked down or free in error). In particular, if you purchased in the last couple of days The Conflict Resolution Toolbox: Models and Maps for Analyzing, Diagnosing, and Resolving Conflict, by Gary T. Furlong, check your receipt - it appears that a few readers paid the full US price of $41.21 for this book that was free for UK readers only.

Eye of the Beholder ($0.99), by Jayne Ann Krentz, is available to pre-order. I would not rely on the price staying the same as the release date nears.

Book Description
After a career-stalling tangle with a fraudulent gallery owner, Art Deco expert Alexa Chambers is ready to get back in the game. But when she secretly consults on an exquisite collection for Arizona's luxurious Avalon Resorts, she doesn't know she will cross paths with enigmatic business titan J. L. Trask.

Years ago, Trask accused Alexa's stepfather of murder -- and vowed he would get revenge. Now, their meeting is inevitable -- and attraction immediate -- as they trade sizzling sparks and snappy repartee. But when a killer emerges from the shadows, these sensual sparring partners team up to solve a deadly crime from the past. Following a trail of clues to a trendy but decidedly strange New Age spa, Trask and Alexa don't need a crystal ball to see that their survival -- and their chances of bliss -- will depend on a little help from a higher power: a true and trustworthy love.

A Clearing in the Wild ($0.76), by Jane Kirkpatrick

Book Description
Young Emma Wagner chafes at the constraints of Bethel colony, an 1850s religious community in Missouri that is determined to remain untainted by the concerns of the world. A passionate and independent thinker, she resents the limitations placed on women, who are expected to serve in quiet submission. In a community where dissent of any form is discouraged, Emma finds it difficult to rein in her tongue–and often doesn’t even try to do so, fueling the animosity between her and the colony’s charismatic and increasingly autocratic leader, Wilhelm Keil.

Eventually Emma and her husband, Christian, are sent along with eight other men to scout out a new location in the northwest where the Bethelites can prepare to await “the last days.” Christian believes they’ve found the ideal situation in Washington territory, but when Keil arrives with the rest of the community, he rejects Christian’s choice in favor of moving to Oregon.

Emma pushes her husband to take this opportunity to break away from the group, but her longed-for influence brings unexpected consequences. As she seeks a refuge for her wounded faith, she learns that her passionate nature can be her greatest strength–if she can harness it effectively.

Plum Spooky ($0.97), by Janet Evanovich, the first full length Stephanie Plum Between-the-Numbers novel

Book Description
Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, New Jersey.

According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys.

Wulf Grimoire is a world wanderer and an opportunist who can kill without remorse and disappear like smoke. He’s chosen Martin Munch, boy genius, as his new business partner, and he’s chosen the Barrens as his new playground.

Munch received his doctorate degree in quantum physics when he was twenty-two. He’s now twenty-four, and while his brain is large, his body hasn’t made it out of the boys’ department at Macy’s. Anyone who says good things come in small packages hasn’t met Munch. Wulf Grimoire is looking for world domination. Martin Munch would be happy if he could just get a woman naked and tied to a tree.

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has Munch on her most-wanted list for failure to appear in court. Plum is the all-American girl stuck in an uncomfortable job, succeeding on luck and tenacity. Usually she gets her man. This time she gets a monkey. She also gets a big guy named Diesel.

Diesel pops in and out of Plum’s life like birthday cake – delicious to look at and taste, not especially healthy as a steady diet, gone by the end of the week if not sooner. He’s an über bounty hunter with special skills when it comes to tracking men and pleasing women. He’s after Grimoire, and now he’s also after Munch. And if truth were told, he wouldn’t mind setting Stephanie Plum in his crosshairs.

Diesel and Plum hunt down Munch and Grimoire, following them into the Barrens, surviving cranberry bogs, the Jersey Devil, a hair-raising experience, sand in their underwear, and, of course . . . monkeys.

Mafia Son: The Scarpa Mob Family, the FBI, and a Story of Betrayal ($0.89), by Sandra Harmon

Book Description
Bestselling author Sandra Harmon uses her inside access to the Mob, law enforcement, and jailed Mafioso Gregory Scarpa Jr. to tell an epic true story of crime and betrayal.

The Scarpas were a Mafia dynasty led by Greg Scarpa Sr., so notorious for his addiction to violence and murder that he was nicknamed “The Grim Reaper.” His son, Gregory Jr., a promising young athlete, worshipped his ruthless and manipulative father, and slowly he was drawn into his father’s dark world. What no one but father and son knew was that for thirty years, starting in the 1960s, Scarpa Sr. was an informant, working intimately with FBI handlers. For decades, his connection to the FBI—including the much-publicized agent Lin DeVecchio—protected him, granting him a virtual license to kill. However, when faced with arrest in the late 1980s, Scarpa asked his son to leave his wife and children, and take the fall for his father.

In 1995, after years in prison, Gregory Jr. was transferred to Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan and re-indicted on superseding charges. There he was imprisoned alongside Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and made a deal with the government to get information from Yousef in exchange for leniency. A year later, he furnished the feds with detailed intelligence on what would eventually result in the September 11 attacks. But, incredibly, Gregory’s desperate warnings were unheeded, and he was sentenced to forty-years-to-life in isolation at the notorious ADMAX, the most secure federal prison in the country, in Florence, Colorado. There, he would supply the FBI with intelligence on Oklahoma City bomber and fellow prisoner Terry Nichols. Again, his contribution was ignored, and Gregory remains at ADMAX, where he believes he will one day be murdered.

A story that gained national notoriety in 2007 as a result of former FBI agent Lin DeVecchio’s sensational murder trial, at which Sandra Harmon testified, this is an unforgettable tale of violence, wealth, and sex, set in a world where a man’s word is both everything and nothing.

Bush (9/11, the War on Terror, Iraq, etc.).

During this time Kinsley left Washington for Seattle and founded Slate, was opinion editor of the Los Angeles Times, underwent brain surgery for Parkinson's disease, and had other adventures that are reflected here. Although mostly about politics, there are articles and essays about other things, such as the future of newspapers, the existence of God, and why power women love Law and Order.

This is the work of a writer at the top of his form. Kinsley's wit is a weapon that any talk-show host or elected blowhard should envy and fear, and the reader will cherish his sense of humor, which enlivens even the toughest subject matter....

Lost In Transmission?: What We Can Know About the Words of Jesus ($0.93 Canada and US), by Nicholas Perrin

Book Description
Bart Ehrman, in his New York Times bestseller, Misquoting Jesus, claims that the New Testament cannot wholly be trusted. Cutting and probing with the tools of text criticism, Ehrman suggests that many of its episodes are nothing but legend, fabricated by those who copied or collated its pages in the intervening centuries. The result is confusion and doubt. Can we truly trust what the New Testament says?

Now, Wheaton College scholar Nicholas Perrin takes on Ehrman and others who claim that the text of the New Testament has been corrupted beyond recognition. Perrin, in an approachable, compelling style, gives us a layman's guide to textual criticism so that readers can understand the subtleties of Ehrman's critiques, and provides firm evidence to suggest that the New Testament can, indeed, be trusted.

Bad Girls of the Bible: And What We Can Learn From Them ($0.85), by Liz Curtis Higgs

Book Description
Women everywhere marvel at those “good girls” in Scripture–Sarah, Mary, Esther–but on most days, that’s not who they see when they look in the mirror. Most women (if they’re honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch of glimpse of Jezebel’s take-charge pride or Eve’s disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today’s modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by her own desires.

So what’s a good girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved humor writer Liz Curtis Higgs, and by God’s grace, choose a better path. In Bad Girls of the Bible, Higgs offers a unique and clear-sighted approach to understanding those “other women” in Scripture, combining a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their mistakes and what lessons women today can learn from them.

Whether they were “Bad to the Bone,” “Bad for a Season, but Not Forever” or only “Bad for a Moment,” these infamous sisters show women how not to handle the challenges of life. With her trademark humor and encouragement, Liz Curtis Higgs teaches us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.

Finally, here it is: the book with the worst reviews I've seen: Genesis ($0.50), by Ken Shufeld. For those in the US -- sorry (LOL!), this one is still full price!

Book Description
A strange 100,000 year-old manuscript in a long-forgotten language has been the basis for all the major religions throughout history. Lost and buried in a sarcophagus during the Second Iraq War, it holds the secrets of human birth-and extinction.

Two children are born with transcendent talents and preternatural powers beyond human comprehension. Only they understand the magnitude of the disaster to come. They are the last, best hope for human survival.

Indelibly bonded, these enigmatic youths-this brave new Adam and Eve-are thrown against their wills into a headlong race to save the world.

Inside My Heart ($1.31), by Robin McGraw

Book Description
I believe we were put on this earth to enjoy lives of joy and abundance, and that is what I want for you and for me. It's not my intention to give people advice on how to solve their problems (I leave that to my husband). But I've had my share of struggles over the years, and I know a thing or two about what has worked for me. I have chosen to be an active participant in my life rather than a spectator, and in so doing I have chosen how to be a woman, how to be a wife, and how to be a mother in ways that are uniquely my own. I offer the stories of these choices as evidence of the power of sheer determination, will, and faith in God.

You've seen her on television with her husband, Dr. Phil. But now it's time for a heart-to-heart conversation with Robin McGraw. In Inside My Heart, Robin speaks woman to woman, inspiring you to embrace and celebrate the many roles you play and encouraging you to make deliberate choices that lead to a richer, happier, and more meaningful life.

She shares with you the life-changing moments of her childhood years, dating and marrying Dr. Phil McGraw, raising two sons, and asserting herself as a woman in a man's world to show you that you have the power to make choices in your life. In fact, she's convinced that you must choose to go after the life you want.

With a deep and abiding faith in God, Robin McGraw shares her story so you too can make choices that reflect your own heart's truest priorities and highest goals.

Blood in the Sand takes readers on a journey in time from Abraham, Isaac, and Ishmael to the critical situation we currently face as citizens of the world. Along the way, Pastor Benny shares personal memories of growing up in the region, scriptural prophecies pertaining to the current crisis, and his own heart regarding what he believes is on the horizon.

Thank You Power: Making the Science of Gratitude Work for You ($3.26), by Deborah Norville

Book Description
Thank You. Can such small words hold life changing power? Yes!

Deborah Norville's groundbreaking and persuasive book argues that gratitude is the secret key to unlocking your full life potential. Rooted in science, presented from a spiritual perspective, Thank You Power details the surprising life improvements that can stem from the practice of gratitude.

Norville brings together for the first time the behavioral and psychological research that prove what people of faith have long known: giving thanks brings life blessings. Beginning with those two small words, thank you, Norville shows how you can be happier and more resilient, have better relationships, improved health, and less stress.

The list of benefits is long. You'll exercise more, be more creative, bounce back more quickly from adversity, have a higher immune response, live longer, be better liked by others, and have more creativity in solving problems. Each of these outcomes is backed up by published research. The key? Gratitude.
