Today's Deals

Additional formats on free books and the first is also now free as an audiobook (and you get paid to take it):
On B&N's Facebook page, you can now vote for this weekend's $3.99 deal: Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim vs. Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys. So far, Gaiman has quite a lead, but either of these will be a good deal (alas, I have both in my library, already).

I was poking around over at iTunes, where the free MP3 of the week is Did It for the Girl by Greg Bates, a pretty decent sounding country tune, and found that you can watch the music video of the very early Beatles recording Hey Bulldog in the studio, in it's entirety for free (at least, for now). It's part of a promotion Apple is doing for their exclusive release of Tomorrow Never Knows, which includes that song along with 13 others (including Paperback Writer, of course!).

You can pick up Marriage Bargain ($2.99 Kindle), by Jennifer Probst, from Kobo using the 80% off coupon code romance80, for a net cost of $0.60. Also, be sure to check your email for a coupon code that promises "up to 75% off" on a selected list of titles - most are getting only a 20% coupon, but others are getting 25% and I actually received a 75% off code. I am thinking about getting Eoin Colfer's The Last Guardian, but I'll need to decide today, before the coupon expires.
Book Description
A marriage in name only...

To save her family home, impulsive bookstore owner, Alexa Maria McKenzie, casts a love spell. But she never planned on conjuring up her best friend's older brother—the powerful man who once shattered her heart.

Billionaire Nicholas Ryan doesn’t believe in marriage, but in order to inherit his father’s corporation, he needs a wife and needs one fast. When he discovers his sister’s childhood friend is in dire financial straits, he offers Alexa a bold proposition.

A marriage in name only with certain rules: Avoid entanglement. Keep things all business. Do not fall in love. The arrangement is only for a year so the rules shouldn’t be that hard to follow, right?

Except fate has a way of upsetting the best-laid plans…

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is The Gingerbread House ($1.99), the first title in the Hammarby series by Carin Gerhardsen. This is another Scandinavian writer and the same publisher and same editorial team that brought us Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy. So far, this is the only one in English on Kindle, but there are at least three in the series you can get in German; I wouldn't be surprised if they all turn up translated in English fairly soon. Mom loved Larsson's series and had me pick them all up, so I've already sent this one to her Kindle!
Book Description
In a short space of time, several bestial murders occur in central Stockholm. When criminal investigator Conny Sjöberg and the Hammarby police begin to suspect that there’s a link between the murders, Sjöberg goes completely cold. There is a killer out there whose motives are very personal, and who will not be deterred. The Gingerbread House by Carin Gerhardsen is the first in the Hammarby series, thrillers with taut, suspenseful plots and unexpected twists and turns. This haunting novel explores schoolyard bullying among young children and the effect it has on them when people look the other way. Many of the scenes in this book are self-experienced and based on Gerhardsen’s own childhood. Urban settings and strong portraits of authentic characters are crafted in depth and detail, insuring the books will linger in the reader’s mind long after the finish. The Gingerbread House is written in the same tradition as the Sjöwall / Wahlöö crime novels, and has been described as a book version of the tv series The Wire.

The Mongoliad ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), the first anthology in The Foreworld Saga by Greg Bear, Neal Stephenson, et al, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $4.99/KLL Eligible). I picked this one up when it was on sale in May for US readers and am looking forward to the release of the next anthology this Fall.
Book Description
The first novel to be released in The Foreworld Saga, The Mongoliad: Book One, is an epic-within-an-epic, taking place in 13th century. In it, a small band of warriors and mystics raise their swords to save Europe from a bloodthirsty Mongol invasion. Inspired by their leader (an elder of an order of warrior monks), they embark on a perilous journey and uncover the history of hidden knowledge and conflict among powerful secret societies that had been shaping world events for millennia.

But the saga reaches the modern world via a circuitous route. In the late 19th century, Sir Richard F. Burton, an expert on exotic languages and historical swordsmanship, is approached by a mysterious group of English martial arts aficionados about translating a collection of long-lost manuscripts. Burton dies before his work is finished, and his efforts were thought lost until recently rediscovered by a team of amateur archaeologists in the ruins of a mansion in Trieste, Italy. From this collection of arcana, the incredible tale of The Mongoliad was recreated.

Full of high adventure, unforgettable characters, and unflinching battle scenes, The Mongoliad ignites a dangerous quest where willpower and blades are tested and the scope of world-building is redefined.

A note on this edition: The Mongoliad began as a social media experiment, combining serial story-telling with a unique level of interaction between authors and audience during the creative process. Since its original iteration, The Mongoliad has been restructured, edited, and rewritten under the supervision of its authors to create a more cohesive reading experience and will be published as a trilogy of novels. This edition is the definitive edition and is the authors' preferred text.
