Today's Deals

Apologies to those that received more than one notice on posts yesterday. Blogger made a sudden change and I had to remove and repost the early posts during the day, to ensure they would work correctly on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Today's Kindle Deal of the Day is Devil Wind ($1.99), by Deborah Shlian and Linda Reid (Oceanview Publishing). In the past month, we've received two of Schlian's novels free (Dead Air and Rabbit in the Moon) and there is also another edition of this one that is eligible for Prime Lending.
Book Description
Outspoken, brash New Yorker Sammy Greene needs a second chance. Fired from her job as a Washington TV producer, her midnight to 3 am show Sammy Greene on the LA Scene at a small progressive radio station soon has Sammy ruffling the feathers of a popular Orange County Congressman. And everyone is listening.

December, 1999. 10 days before the new millennium. Already on edge with Santa Ana devil wind fanning fires threatening to engulf the city and Y2K looming, Sammy's callers imagine Armageddon - the perfect setting for a rogue CIA operative to manipulate fears as cover for his deadly plot.

A young woman's burned body identified as the wayward daughter of old friend, Gus Pappajohn spurs the ex-campus cop to join Sammy in what may be a murder investigation, along the way exposing the seamy underbelly of Tinseltown. If Sammy's not careful this time, someone will make sure she's off the air for good.

Against the Light ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Dave Duncan, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $4.99/KLL Eligible). I started reading Dave's books when they were self-published in the Kindle store (some still are) and was happy to see that he was picked up by Amazon's 47North publishing imprint; I grabbed this the last time it was on sale.
Book Description
The Hierarchy, high priests of the religious order the Light, has installed King Ethan as the monarchical figurehead, ruling both the magical kingdom of Albi and its predominant religion. Scattered throughout the land, worshippers in the old ways of the Earth Mother are persecuted as heretics. And when young missionary student Rollo Woodbridge returns home to Albi, he is immediately arrested for heresy and treason, setting off a chain of events that plunges the land into utter chaos.

The Hierarchy has more treacherous motives, however, and when Rollo is rescued from jail, his family’s home is destroyed—but Rollo and his siblings are left alive. While Rollo tries diplomacy to end the religious and political conflict, his brother and sister swear vengeance. With the hours to deliverance counting down and their lives hanging in the balance, they must decide whether to stay and fight or leave Albi forever in the suspenseful, action-packed Against the Light.

Rip Tide ($2.99 Kindle, B&N), the sixth title in Dame Stella Rimington's Liz Carlyle series, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle. This series is essentially a female James Bond, but written by a former Director General of the Security Service (MI5), who worked counter-subversion, counter-espionage and counter-terrorism during her career.
Book Description
When pirates attack a cargo ship off the Somalian coast and one of them is found to be a British-born Pakistani, alarm bells start ringing at London’s Thames House. MI5 Intelligence Officer Liz Carlyle is brought in to establish how and why a young British Muslim could go missing from his well-to-do family in Birmingham and end up on board a pirate skiff in the Indian Ocean, armed with a Kalashnikov.

Meanwhile, the owner of the charitable NGO that leased the ship suspects that his fleet is being deliberately targeted. But why would pirates be interested in charitable supplies? And how do they know the exact details of his ships’ cargo and routes?

When an undercover operative connected to the case turns up dead in Athens it looks like piracy may be the least of the Service’s problems.

Now Liz, with the help of Peggy Kinsolving, Dave Armstrong, and the rest of her unit, attempts to unravel the connections between Pakistan, Greece and Somalia. She’ll have to rely on their wits--and the judicious use of force--to get to the truth. And she doesn’t have long, as trouble is brewing closer to home: the kind of explosive trouble that MI5 could do without.

Tiger's Voyage ($10.98 Hardcover; $1.99 B&N), the third title in the Tiger's Curse series by Colleen Houck, is the Nook Daily Find for Families. Since this is published by Splinter, an imprint of Sterling (owned by B&N), there is no Kindle edition available.
