The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner ($9.99 Kindle; $7.54 Hardcover ), by Stephenie Meyer, can be read for free on her website, thru midnight (EST) July 5. For a novella, this one is fairly long, at 192 pages, but it's one you should be able to read thru in a couple of days. You can't get a download there though, you can only read while online. The site uses Flash, so I suspect it's doesn't work at all with the iPad (and definitely not with the Kindle).
