It’s not his first rejection—his father tossed him out at age sixteen—but Luke has no problem trading his favors for a home and security. Especially with rich, powerful, handsome men.

Except now, with finals bearing down, there’s no time to be choosy. He needs a roof over his head and he needs it now. Even if it means settling temporarily for a geeky, less-than-well-off chemical engineer called Russell.

Luke’s fully prepared to put out for the guy—because after all, in this world no one gets something for nothing. But Russell isn’t just a nerd; he’s an honourable nerd who wants to save himself for someone special.

At first Luke is annoyed, but the more time he spends with Russell, the closer he comes to a devastating realization. He wants to be that someone special. Except he’s fallen for the one man he can’t seem to charm…

Today's Deals

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a safe holiday. You'll notice that I've moved the Backlist/Indie freebie section to this daily roundup post, just as a list of titles. I'm going to try keeping them there for a while, since they otherwise seem to be trying to take over the blog.

There are several new 30% off coupons for Kobo (see sidebar at right), good until January 12.

If you run into your local Starbucks, you may still be able to grab a card with the code to get the paid version Scrabble for free in the Appstore (runs on iThings only, of course); from what I can tell, it's the iPhone version, but it runs on the iPad and iPod Touch.

In the Amazon store, the 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less selection has changed, which means there are a lot of new bargains (some of which will, no doubt, disappear in a day or two, as generally seems to happen each month with this promotion).

Additional formats on these free books are now available:

The Thomas & Mercer edition of Already Gone ($0.99), by John Rector, is today's Kindle Deal of the Day.
Book Description
Jake Reese is a writing teacher at an American university. He lives in a small brick Tudor close to campus with his art buyer wife, Diane. His life is quiet-Ordinary even. And he likes it that way. But it wasn't always quiet. Jake's distant past was a life on the streets, inflicting damage and suffering on more people than he can count. And now someone from his past, it seems, has come looking for him.

A raw, gripping thriller about the price paid for past sins, John Rector's third novel is a live wire that crackles with the intensity of a man who has nothing left to lose. When two men attack Jake in a parking lot and cut off his ring finger, he tries to dismiss it as an unlucky case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But when events take a more sinister turn and Diane goes missing, Jake knows he can no longer hide from the truth.

As he embarks on a mission to find his wife, he realizes his dark past is refusing to stay buried, and that his future is about to unfold in ways he could never have imagined.

With taut and brooding prose, Rector paints a formidable portrait of a reformed man's slow descent into a life he thought he had walked away from forever. As the intensity becomes almost unbearable, the pace quickens and the suspense applies an unrelenting, vice-like grip, as ALREADY GONE hurtles toward its ultimate, explosive climax.

The Little Friend ($1.54 / £0.99 UK), by Donna Tartt, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (the US edition is $11.99).
Book Description
The hugely anticipated new novel by the author of The Secret History—a best-seller nationwide and around the world, and one of the most astonishing debuts in recent times—The Little Friend is even more transfixing and resonant.

In a small Mississippi town, Harriet Cleve Dusfresnes grows up in the shadow of her brother, who—when she was only a baby—was found hanging dead from a black-tupelo tree in their yard. His killer was never identified, nor has his family, in the years since, recovered from the tragedy.

For Harriet, who has grown up largely unsupervised, in a world of her own imagination, her brother is a link to a glorious past she has only heard stories about or glimpsed in photograph albums. Fiercely determined, precocious far beyond her twelve years, and steeped in the adventurous literature of Stevenson, Kipling, and Conan Doyle, she resolves, one summer, to solve the murder and exact her revenge. Harriet's sole ally in this quest, her friend Hely, is devoted to her, but what they soon encounter has nothing to do with child's play: it is dark, adult, and all too menacing.

A revelation of familial longing and sorrow, The Little Friend explores crime and punishment, as well as the hidden complications and consequences that hinder the pursuit of truth and justice. A novel of breathtaking ambition and power, it is rich in moral paradox, insights into human frailty, and storytelling brilliance.

Storm Born ($3.49 Kindle; $1.99 B&N), the first title in the Dark Swan series by Richelle Mead, is the Nook Daily Find. This is a series I started on paper, then repurchased as ebooks. You can get the first three in the series (including this one), but getting the Richelle Mead Dark Swan Bundle ($9.83 Kindle, B&N) and the fourth title was released earlier this week: Shadow Heir ($5.24 Kindle, B&N).

Now Eugenie is a hot target for every ambitious demon and Otherworldy ne'er-do-well, and the ones who don't want to knock her up want her dead.
