Free Short Story (Kindle) - Socs and Greasers

Socs and Greasers: Behind The Scenes of The Outsiders, by Rob Lowe, is free to pre-order in the Kindle store. This is a single story from his upcoming autobiography, Stories I Only Tell My Friends.
Book Description
A scene taken straight from Rob Lowe’s New York Times bestselling memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, a wryly funny and surprisingly moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye.

In Socs and Greasers, Lowe tells us what it was like to work on the set of The Outsiders, a film that helped launch the careers of many of today’s biggest stars, including Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, and Rob Lowe himself.

Dozens of Free Kindle Books!

Update: A number of books are available from other stores, in addition to the Kindle store, now. I've added links next to the titles for those, below.

I'll be back later with a detailed list by genre, but if you want to work thru the list, there are dozens of free books on Kindle today. That link should put you about where the new ones start, and just keep working towards the end.

Update: OK, I think this is the entire list! Enjoy!

Free Book - Harlequin Holiday Collection (K/N/E)

Update: 12/10/12 It's back to being available in the Kindle store and once again it's free. Seems to still be free elsewhere, as well.
Update: 12/16/11 Still missing from the Kindle store, this is now free on the Harlequin site.
Update: 12/2/11 Apparently there are formatting errors with the Kindle edition; if they get it fixed in time, it should be back. In the meantime, it's now free from BooksonBoard and from AllRomance -- unfortunately, both are DRM'd EPUB's, so there still isn't a solution for Kindle owners, other than to read the individual stories on the internet (see this post for links).
Update: 12/2/11 No longer available on Kindle (may have been pulled for formatting issues, as it is still free elsewhere).
Update: Also free from Sony.

I had the Harlequin Holiday Collection: Four Classic Seasonal Novellas: And a Dead Guy in a Pear Tree\Seduced by the Season\Evidence of Desire\Season of Wonder, by Leslie Kelly, Debra Webb, Merline Lovelace and Marta Perry, on my bargain roundup yesterday, but today you can get it for free on both Kindle and from Barnes & Noble. Those that pre-ordered, check your receipts and see if you were charged. If you were, you can ask for a refund (use the Support menu item on any Kindle page, then Contact Us button on the right side of the screen). Once the refund is processed (which takes them a couple of hours, usually), just repurchase as the current, free price.
Book Description
A struggling B&B owner scrambles to hide the dead body wrapped in her Christmas tree from a visiting camera crew—and from her still-irresistible reporter ex. A waitress and a sexy FBI agent mix business with pleasure while investigating a crime over the holidays. A crime lab worker finds herself in danger six days before Christmas...and only her off-limits but oh-so-attractive coworker can help. The Whispers of Nemesis ($1.99 / £1.29 UK), by Anne Zouroudi, is the Kindle Deal of the day for those in the UK (not available in the US).
Book Description
It is winter in the mountains of Greece and as the snow melts in the tiny village of Vrisi a body is discovered lying by the side of the road.

In the same village, watched over by the shrine of St Fanourios (the patron saint of lost things) a coffin is unearthed and broken open, revealing some very unexpected remains to the astonished mourners.

Hermes Diaktoros, drawn to Vrisi on an affair of the heart, finds himself embroiled in the mysteries of both the dead body and the coffin, as well as the enigmatic last will and testament of Greece's most admired modern poet.

The Whispers of Nemesis is a story of desperate measures and dark secrets, of murder and immortality and of pride coming before the steepest of falls.

The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever (Bevelstoke Series #1) ($1.99 Kindle, B&N), by Julia Quinn, is the Nook Daily Find, price matched on Kindle.
Book Description
2 March 1810 . . .Today, I fell in love.

At the age of ten, Miranda Cheever showed no signs of Great Beauty. And even at ten, Miranda learned to accept the expectations society held for her—until the afternoon when Nigel Bevelstoke, the handsome and dashing Viscount Turner, solemnly kissed her hand and promised her that one day she would grow into herself, that one day she would be as beautiful as she already was smart. And even at ten, Miranda knew she would love him forever.

But the years that followed were as cruel to Turner as they were kind to Miranda. She is as intriguing as the viscount boldly predicted on that memorable day—while he is a lonely, bitter man, crushed by a devastating loss. But Miranda has never forgotten the truth she set down on paper all those years earlier—and she will not allow the love that is her destiny to slip lightly through her fingers . . .

I highly recommend you pick up Florida Roadkill ($9.99 Kindle; $0.99 B&N), the first in the Serge Storms series by Tim Dorsey, which is the B&N Spotlight book this month. This is an Agency title, so it should be the same everywhere (I've already reported the price to Amazon) and should drop within a day or so if you are not a nook owner. His latest, When Elves Attack: A Joyous Christmas Greeting from the Criminal Nutbars of the Sunshine State is more in keeping with the season and he has another lined up to release in January (Pineapple Grenade). Looks like I have a couple of titles to catch up on this series for my TBR list.
Book Description
Sunshine State trivia buff Serge A. Storms loves eliminating jerks and pests. His drug-addled partner Coleman loves cartoons. Hot stripper Sharon Rhodes loves cocaine, especially when purchased with rich dead men's money.

On the other hand, there's Sean and David, who love fishing and are kind to animals -- and who are about to cross paths with a suitcase filled with $5 million in stolen insurance money. Serge wants the suitcase. Sharon wants the suitcase. Coleman wants more drugs . . . and the suitcase. In the meantime, there's murder by gun, Space Shuttle, Barbie doll, and Levi's 501s.

In other words, welcome to Tim Dorsey's Florida -- where nobody gets out unscathed and untanned!
