Free Book - The Bride Found (DF)

The Bride Found ($2.99 Kindle), the second title in The Civil War Brides series by Tracey Jane Jackson, is the final freebie as part of AllRomance's annual countdown to EarthDay. With only a one diamond on the heat index at ARe, I'd say this is a straightforward historical romance (with a bit of time-traveling thrown in) to close out the promotion.
Book Description
Emma Wellington is dealing with the strange disappearance of her sister and brother-in-law, and no one is certain they're even still alive. Saddled with their home drowning in probate, she is forced to take over the settling of their estate.

As she's standing in her sister's library, possibly for the last time, she sees a strange vision and then her world goes black. She awakens to find herself in an old-fashioned carriage house, facing a man in top hat and tails.

Clayton Madden is in Lincoln's War Cabinet and after arriving home one evening, discovers a beautiful woman in the shadows of his carriage house. He is immediately enamored with the tall beauty, despite her strange speech and dress. His intention is to get to know her further, but she disappears in the middle of the night with no explanation as to where she's gone.

Will he find her before a deeper plot threatens her life? Will Clayton and Emma find a love that is everlasting?

If you explore on their Hot Deals page, you'll find a few more freebies that aren't part of the countdown (including the genre-bending His Cowboy Werewolf Lover for the LGBT fans and Once Bitten, Forever Burned for those who prefer the more traditional style werewolf/vampire romance).

The Crystal Warrior ($3.99 Kindle), the first historical romance in the Crystal Warriors series by Maree Anderson, is free at AllRomance, as part of their annual countdown to EarthDay.

Then she's given a piece of wulfenite crystal and Lord Wulfenite, Keeper of the Shifting Sands fief, literally pops out of the crystal and plants one on her. Wulf is the man of her dreams... or at least, dressed like an ad for We Love Leather, with killer abs and delectable pectorals, he sure looks like the man of her dreams. But if there's one thing Chalcey's learned: If it looks too good to be true, then it sure as heck probably is too good to be true! And Wulf proves to be no exception.

Wulf doesn't stop to wonder why he's so attracted to Chalcedony. All he knows is he's finally escaped from a centuries-long hell and he wants this woman - more than anything he's wanted in his entire life. Chalcey doesn't stand a chance. Before she realizes what's at stake, she's bonded with him and his life is in her hands. She knows she should walk away and leave him to his fate. No way is she planning on getting stuck with a guy who used to steal women for breeding stock! But the more she learns about Wulf and his past, the more conflicted she becomes.

Only when the Crystal Guardian's curse threatens everything Chalcey's worked so hard for, does she finally realize what's truly important. But even if she can figure out how to save Wulf from his fate, it might be too late.

Free Book - The Centurion and the Queen (DF)

The Centurion and the Queen ($4.99 Kindle), the first historical romance in the Centurion series by Minnette Meador, is free at AllRomance, as part of their annual countdown to EarthDay. This one should be free until midnight, tomorrow night (however, note that All Romance Ebooks will be taken offline Friday, Apr, 13th 12AM - 5AM CDT for maintenance).
Book Description
Marius has been stationed on the island of 60AD Britannia for sixteen years, his demotion from the famous Praetorian Guard to Centurion brought about when he was suspected of involvement in the assassination of Caligula. He is intimately aware of his duty, even when it clashes against the natural compassion he tries to subdue, and he secretly wants nothing more than to get off this accursed island so he can return to his home. Once a celebrated Roman hero, Marius still clings to the old traditions as a fair but tough leader to his men. When Delia enters his life, she challenges everything he believes, effortlessly strips away years of Roman conditioning, and angers him to the point of betraying his training--and his oaths. He simply cannot resist her.

Delia is sister to an indolent Celtic king, but that role has turned to nothing more than another surrender. All she can do now is help her people survive the gradual conquest by Rome and their suicidal pride as so many throw themselves against the unstoppable Roman machine. Fighting desperately to save as many as she can, Delia knows there is no hope for her future. Her training as a warrior and a queen means very little in the wake of a declining civilization, and this beautiful, proud woman has to struggle for every joy. The last thing she expected was to find herself craving the touch of an enemy.

They discover an impossible love, a surprising passion they both thought had died, and something they had never imagined, or thought they deserved. They are thrown into the clash between an Iceni queen with 50,000 angry Bretons and a clever Roman general with only 10,000 legionnaires. Marius and Delia have their lives, their beliefs, and their roles turned inside out as they find themselves fighting on opposing sides, in love, and unable to change the future. The revolution would spark their desire, but nearly destroy them both.

Free Book Roundup

Looks like I missed a day at Read an EBook Week, this year. Here are the offerings for day 5:
  • Over at AllRomance EBooks, there are a total of 537 free books this week. I really suspect most of them are free all the time, but if you see some you really want, be sure to grab them by the weekend ends.
  • central avenue publisher has three books up: False Witness by Anita Rodgers; In The Eye of the Beholder by Beverly Cialone; The Fantabulous Fens by Gautam Sen
  • Twilight Times Books has added No place for Gods by Gerald Mills and Striking Back from Down Under by Dr. Bob Rich
  • The Untreed Reads Store is giving away Serere (Prelude to THE GARDEN) by Andy Frankham-Allen
  • Dorrance Publishing is giving away The Oasis Project by Art Adkins
  • RoseDog Books offering Jesus Priceless Treasure, More than Friend to Me by James F. Morin
  • Red Lead Press is offering Wisdom From the Master Forces by Elwood Babbitt

E-Reads is participating in RaEBW this year and are giving away two books: Suspicion of Innocence ($5.79 Kindle), by Barbara Parker, and Fellowship of Fear (Gideon Oliver) ($3.49 Kindle), by Aaron Elkins. Download them in EPUB or MOBI format from their website, this week only.
Suspicion of Innocence
Gail Connor and Anthony Quintana make a combustible mix on many levels. Passionately attracted to each other on a personal level, they are equally passionate defenders of their clients even when their interests don’t always work in tandem. Set all this against the sultry background of a Miami that is riddled with crime and corruption, drowning in drugs, illegal immigrants and shady deals, simmering with a melting-pot clash of cultures and you have a recipe for highly entertaining, hotly explosive crime and justice. In the first title in the Suspicion series, SUSPICION OF INNOCENCE, Gail Conner is a fast-rising attorney in a major law firm, about to make partner—until her life is derailed by the discovery of her sister’s murdered body and the quick revelation that Gail is the prime suspect. Gail must fight for her life as she gets a first-hand look at the dark underside of the legal system.

Fellowship of Fear (Gideon Oliver)
When anthropology professor Gideon Oliver is offered a teaching fellowship at U.S. military bases in Germany, Sicily, Spain, and Holland, he wastes no time accepting. Stimulating courses to teach, a decent stipend, all expenses paid, plenty of interesting European travel . . . what's not to like?

It doesn't take him long to find out. On his first night, he is forced to fend off two desperate, black-clad men who have invaded his Heidelberg hotel room with intent to kill. And then there's the little matter of a few trivial details that the recruiting agency forgot to mention—such as the fact that the two previous holders of the fellowship both met with mysterious ends.

Today's backlist/small press/indie, totally free, books for everyone on Kindle. These are are not likely to be free for long, so double check prices before one-clicking (genres are my best guess), as most of them go back up after a day or two (sometimes less), at which point most of them become eligible for the Kindle Lending Library.

Free Book - Bear, Otter, and the Kid (DF)

Bear, Otter, and the Kid ($5.38 Kindle), by TJ Klune, is free direct from the publisher, Dreamspinner Press. Apparently there is some controversy over whether the book has passages that may closely resemble the movie Shelter (a blogger was the source of the original allegations), so Dreamspinner is giving it away and working with the studio to see if they agree with a blogger that accused the author of plagiarism (you can read their statement on the whole mess, which is also linked on their home page). There doesn't seem to be much overlap in the two stories, from what I see in their statement, other than someone falling in love with a best friend's brother - a theme that is common in many gay and straight romances (and this particular novel is based on the author's life, with an entirely different focus from the movie).
Book Description
Three years ago, Bear McKenna’s mother took off for parts unknown with her new boyfriend, leaving Bear to raise his six-year-old brother Tyson, aka the Kid. Somehow they’ve muddled through, but since he’s totally devoted to the Kid, Bear isn’t actually doing much living—with a few exceptions, he’s retreated from the world, and he’s mostly okay with that. Until Otter comes home.

Otter is Bear’s best friend’s older brother, and as they’ve done for their whole lives, Bear and Otter crash and collide in ways neither expect. This time, though, there’s nowhere to run from the depth of emotion between them. Bear still believes his place is as the Kid’s guardian, but he can’t help thinking there could be something more for him in the world... something or someone.

Read an eBook Week - Day 1

It's that time of year again, when publishers and authors give us tons of free books, in order to entice us to read an eBook (something that made a lot more sense before the Kindle, when few people read ebooks). Some of the specials are all week long, such as the promo over at Smashwords, where you'll find hundreds of books marked down or free for the week, while others are single day offers (sometimes with a new one each day). I'll try to track down and post the daily offers, but you may want to explore the official Read an EBook Week site to see the other offers that are being posted by authors, publishers and retail outlets.

Time limited offers:
I suggest using Internet Explorer for those last three, as I had problems getting them with FireFox.

Free Book - One Italian Summer (DF)

Whiskey Creek Press is offering a free download of One Italian Summer (out of print, Amazon), by Janet Mills, in either PDF or HTML format (or both - but it twice) and either can be converted to Kindle using Calibre. It's their 9th "birthday" as a publisher, so they are also offering 9 books at 99 cents apiece, both on the main site and from their Torrid line.
Book Description
Could it be amore?

A middle-aged woman recently stung by betrayal and divorce meets a dashing younger man still grieving from his wife’s death. Their unlikely romance ignites in the heat of One Italian Summer.

When American Natalie Compton travels to Italy and encounters Giovanni Ragazzo in a centuries-old monastery in Florence, she never expects the handsome Italian to be interested in someone like her. She considers herself too old, too chubby, and too jaded from her failed marriage.

Gio loves Natalie's vitality, her spunk, her wit...everything about her that stands in contrast to his late wife, whose death from a long illness devastated him.

Both Natalie and Giovanni are harboring secrets that would ruin most romantic relationships. But does the truth really matter when they have only ten days to be together?
Get the free ebook from Whiskey Creek Press. You will have to set up an account, but I don't believe you have to enter any CC info (doesn't appear my old account has any) just for the free book.

You'll also find a bundle of Leigh Brackett novels at Baen. They usually raise the price to $32 after the bundle has been out for a while, but this one is still stuck at $20.

Blue Hole Back Home ($9.39 Kindle), by Joy Jordan-Lake, is free from Barnes & Noble, ChristianBook and Kobo, courtesy of Christian publisher David C. Cook. Book Description
"Sacred's not a word I've ever much liked. But maybe some things, and some places, just are. And maybe the Blue Hole was one of those things."

Shelby (nicknamed Turtle) never had any female friends. But when a mysterious girl from Sri Lanka moved to town in the summer of 1979, Turtle invites her to a secret haven: the Blue Hole. Turtle has no idea now much that simple gesture will affect the rest of her life, or the lives of those she loves.

In a time when America was technically well beyond the Civil Rights era, there were those in Turtle's small Appalachian town who rejected the presence of someone different. And in just one summer—in a collision of love, hate, jealousy, beauty, and a sacred, muddy swimming hole—nothing and everything changed.

Bargain Book Roundup

The Lord of the Rings: One Volume: Collector's Ed ($9.99 Kindle), by J.R.R. Tolkien, appears to be the same 50th anniversary edition that Fictionwise has had for a while (I bought it a while ago), other than the cover. The description seems to imply that it has been updated, but I couldn't see any differences in the sample (which contains the TOC and a few of the forewords). Regardless, this is a good price on Kindle (and it's no longer for sale at FW)..
Book Description
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.

From Sauron's fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.

When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.

The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.

This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

The Lamplighters ($4.24), by Frazer Lee, is a Bram Stoker Award Finalist for Best First Novel of the Year. If you want to get it direct from Samhain, use coupon code FIRSTBOOK for 30% off (end price $3.85), valid thru the end of the month.
Book Description
Life on Meditrine Island is luxurious…but brief.

Marla Neuborn has found the best post-grad job in the world – as a 'Lamplighter' working on Meditrine Island, an exclusive idyllic paradise owned and operated by a consortium of billionaires. All Lamplighters have to do is tend to the mansions, cook and clean, and turn on lights to make it appear the owners are home. But the job comes with conditions. Marla will not know the exact location of the island, and she will have no contact with the outside world for the duration of her stay.

Once on the island, Marla quickly learns the billionaire lifestyle is not all it is made out to be. The chief of security rules Meditrine with an iron fist. His private police force patrols the shores night and day, and CCTV cameras watch the Lamplighters relentlessly. Soon Marla will also discover first-hand that the island hides a terrible secret. She’ll meet the resident known as the Skin Mechanic. And she’ll find out why so few Lamplighters ever leave the island alive.

A Royal Mess ($2.51), by Tyne O'Connell, looks like a nice YA romance.
Book Description
Calypso Kelly has finally joined the in-crowd at her exclusive English boarding school. She also just happens to be dating Prince Freddie himself! But balancing her social life, her prince, and her parents’ visit to London proves to be more than Calypso can handle.

This Newbery Medal Book describes how a ten-year-old Danish girl's bravery is tested when her best friend is threatened by Nazis in 1943.

Van Gogh's Room at Arles ($1.99), by Stanley Elkin, is another great reprint edition from Open Road.
Book Description
Three witty and poignant novellas from a twentieth-century literary master at the peak of his craft

Van Gogh’s Room at Arles is Stanley Elkin’s second collection of novellas, a razor-sharp exploration of three characters suffering under the weight of intellectual, physical, and social burdens. In the collection’s title story, Elkin writes of an insecure professor’s scholarly retreat with the most accomplished members of his field. “Her Sense of Timing” is a story of a man who, though confined to a wheelchair, attempts to throw a party without the help of his absent wife. And in “Confessions of a Princess Manque,” Elkin writes of the Prince of Wales’s love affair with a common woman in a parody of a sensationalist tabloid story.

This ebook features rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate and from the Stanley Elkin archives at Washington University in St. Louis.

Deadly Appraisal ($2.99), is the second title in the Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries series by Jane K. Cleland
Book Description
Josie Prescott is settling into her new life in New Hampshire. Her antiques business is thriving, she's beginning to make some close friends, and her relationship with the local police chief is becoming more interesting. Not bad for someone who has completely uprooted her life as a New York City auction house expert in order to get a fresh start in a small New England town.

With so much suddenly to lose, Josie can't help but worry when murder invades her seemingly quiet community. Josie is sponsoring the Portsmouth Women's Guild Annual Black and Gold Gala and is looking forward to receiving a kindly worded thank-you for her efforts. Instead, the Guild representative, Maisy Gaylor, dies a horrible death in the midst of the banquet. Who could have wanted to kill earnest, drab little Maisy? "Funny, isn't it," muses the hostile Detective Rowcliff, "how a lot of people end up dead when no one has any enemies."

Everyone who had access to the wine Maisy drank, including Josie herself, soon comes under suspicion. Can Josie manage to ferret out the truth, keep her business running smoothly, and continue to put down roots in her new town, or will everything prove too much for her to handle on her own?

Looped ($0.99), by Andrew Winston, is the first of three titles on sale from publisher Agate Bolden, as part of Black History Month.
Book Description
A remarkably assured and accomplished debut novel that encompasses the bursting life of contemporary Chicago, Looped tells the separate stories of a diverse group of Chicagoans—black, brown, and white, gay, straight, and bi—as their lives unfold in diverging and (occasionally) converging ways over the course of the year 2000. Among the characters are the family of a middle-class black postman whose runaway daughter has just learned she’s pregnant; a gifted half-Vietnamese high-schooler whose troubled father spies on the son he abandoned years earlier; a tradition-bound Greek diner owner whose upwardly mobile daughter, embarrassed by her ethnic roots, is snarled in a loveless marriage; a gay chef whose shaky relationship is strained by the visit of his closeted lover’s uncle, a Catholic priest; and the motley members of an up-and-coming band shaken by the breakup of its ambitious lead guitarist and his sexually confused songwriter girlfriend. Ambitious, sprawling, engrossing, multifaceted, insightful, and addictively readable, Looped explodes with a life and vitality that mirrors the multicultural reality of twenty-first century Chicago, where the families that sustain us are more likely to be those we’ve created than those we’re born to.

The Skull Cage Key ($0.99), by Michel Marriott
Book Description
Chinese New Year, 2042. Armstrong, an upwardly mobile Harlem resident, is out celebrating with his boss (and lover) when they’re assaulted in her hotel room. She ends up in the Jacuzzi minus her head; the cops are convinced he’s to blame. Armstrong goes on the lam, dodging the cops while trying to figure out exactly what happened that night. Answers come in the form of Oona, a sultry sex worker with an unexpectedly deep reservoir of information. As Armstrong digs for the whole story, a disgraced ex-cop is invited back to the force to combat a powerful designer drug that’s all the rage with the young, rich, and bored. As the two men’s paths draw inexorably together, the story behind the new drug becomes clearer — and far more sinister. This absorbing debut novel is a dark, erotic thriller with a powerful sci-fi kick.

The Burning City ($0.99) is the second in the Spirit Binders series by Alaya Dawn Johnson; the first title, Racing the Dark, is also on sale at $4.19.
Book Description
In The Burning City, Alaya Dawn Johnson continues the trilogy begun with her debut, Racing the Dark, delving deeper into the world of magic wielded by women who understand the dark trade-offs of power and sacrifice. Lana, the heroine, has become the black angel —a harbinger of destruction unheard of in the islands for 500 years. Nui'ahi, the sleeping volcano of the great city Essel, has erupted. In the chaos, the city is reshaping itself and violence threatens from all corners. A rebel movement has formed in the destroyed heart of the city, determined to oust Kohaku, the mad Mo'i of Essel. Lana wants no part of the rebels' cause — the death spirit still chases her, and the great witch Akua has kidnapped Lana's mother. But the more Lana looks for her mother, the more she is drawn into the city's political conflicts. As Kohaku descends deeper into madness, determined to subdue the city by any means necessary, his wife has run away to the fire temple, where she too is slowly converted to the rebel's cause. When long-running tensions spill over into civil war, Lana must make her hardest decision yet: her mother's life, or a city's freedom?
